The short answer to the “se-cret sauce” to small business success is people. But peo-
ple is a pretty broad term, so let’s dig in a little deeper and unpack how people lead to small business success.
Anybody can sell stuff and you can sell stuff anywhere. That’s both good and bad. If you have stuff to sell, your marketplace is endless. Think about the geo-graphic limita-tions on sales in the 20th century. In the 1949 “Death of a Salesman,” Willy Lo-man could sell only as far as he could drive (and he too preferred his hometown). Interstate high-ways, shopping malls, mail-order and catalog sales expanded the marketplace from regional to na-tionwide. Today, internet connec-tivity makes selling and purchas-ing travel globally. As I mentioned, that’s both good and bad. It’s good because geography no longer lim-its the marketplace of our small businesses. Small businesses can serve their friends and neighbors in their hometown and around the world. The marketplace may be endless, but so are the options.
Anyone can sell just about any-thing to just about anyone online. This is bad because in addition to the marketplace being limitless, so is the competition. In fact, the choices are overwhelming.
Just before Christmas, I was looking for a gift for an ice-fishing family member but didn’t know what kind of lures to buy. So, I de-cided to find something special and unique – but I didn’t know what exactly. While shopping for an outfit at the Bric in downtown Fergus Falls, owner Stephanie Dykhoff, showed me their hottest selling item — an LED stocking cap! She said they were “flying off
the shelf” and people loved them for hunting, shoveling, running and ice fishing. Bingo! Did she somehow know I was looking for a unique gift item? She helped me find the perfect item – an item I didn’t even know I was looking for. It’s the personal interaction and excellent customer service that people provide when you shop in your hometown stores that make shopping locally so worthwhile.
In comparison, an online search would have resulted in hundreds of options, along with hundreds of questions: Will it fit snugly or loosely? Is it big enough to cover ears? Is the fabric soft or scratchy? How bright is the light? (My brain does not compute in lumens.) Does the light make the cap un-comfortable? Will it fit in a coat pocket or is it too bulky? Will it be toasty warm or is it flimsy? Read-ing a listing of features and specs online in no way compares with-holding a product (in this case a
cap) in your hands — which is ex-actly what I did at the Bric, down-town Fergus Falls. In-person you can try it on and get answers to your questions before you buy.
Another great example of how people at small businesses fulfill the needs of their communities is the Zierden family, owners of Fer-gus Home & Hardware. Over the years, they’ve modified their prod-ucts and services to fill in what’s missing from other retailers. In fact, they listen to their customers.
A few years ago, the only way to
get your ice skates sharpened in Fergus Falls was through an indi-vidual who sharpened them in the evenings, after his day job. Com-petitive figure skaters and hockey players know that when you “lose your edge” (blades get dull), you lose your edge. Although there are not enough blades to sharpen to make it a full-time job, it was de-manding – nights, weekends – and of course, last-minute precompe-tition requests. The Zierden family

includes a few hockey players, and they thought it would be wonder-ful if getting skates sharpened was more accessible. So, they pur-sued offering the service, making it more convenient for people in the community to get their blades sharpened. They also added figure skates, hockey sticks and other gear to their inventory. Now, peo-ple travel from as far as Jamestown to purchase figure skates. They come to Fergus Falls for personal-ized customer service from a fami-ly that understands. They chose to add the skate sharpening business because they saw the need in the community.
If you shop online or go into a big-box store and they don’t have the item, you’re out of luck. They
aren’t going to add inventory, sizes or services if you ask. But a locally owned, small business listens to their customers and the needs of the community. Small business-es see needs and fill them, but only if we continue to shop there. Cheering for the Otter girls’ hock-ey team makes us proud of our hometown. So, let’s rally around our local businesses — they make our hometown unique and spe-cial, they support our local sports teams and they help our local economy thrive. Won’t you join the hometown team and support our local businesses?
Showcase Fergus Falls on March 19 is a perfect opportunity to get to know the local businesses and the people who run them. They make Fergus Falls special — and they are dedicated to the success of the en-tire community. Showcase Fergus Falls is a chance to meet the peo-
ple who are making differences in our communities through their small businesses.
So why would someone, a regular Joe, Joanna or John Q. Public, attend Showcase? Do you know something about each of the 50-plus business-es who’ll be at Showcase? Here’s your chance to meet them.
Throughout our lives, we search for answers to big, important questions. We make big decisions and purchases throughout our lives, both personal and for work. – from buying a home and getting a mortgage to replacing the fur-nace and securing our home. How is our plan for retirement working? What happens after retirement? Who will take care of us or our par-ents? Our business needs are simi-lar — who will help us expand our line of credit? You may drive buy these businesses every day, but do you know the people who work
there? Wouldn’t it be great to meet the people in our businesses be-fore you do business with them? In order to do business with people, we want to know them, like them and trust them.
Showcase is the perfect oppor-tunity to get to know the awesome people making a difference in the Fergus Falls area.
