Two years later, Dr. Drewes,a respected anesthesiologist, returned to the Divi Resort fora medical convention.

“I was with my partner inour practice, and we noticedthey had cleared the land next

to the resort, so we went toinvestigate,” recalls Sandra, known as “Sam” to all herfamily and friends. “We metFrank Conroy, and he intro-duced us to the concept oftimesharing.

“What the heck is time-sharing?” was what wethought.”

Sam could not ignorethat very attractive $2,500price tag and the option tocancel if she had secondthoughts, so reserved aweek in mid-January, agood time to escapeChicago’s bitter winters. She brought the contracthome to her husband, areal estate banking execu-tive, for his army oflawyers to look over.“None of Warren’s 90lawyers had the remotestidea regarding timeshar-ing or what it was, but wefigured it was worth a try. Wealready know we lovedAruba. We enjoyed our firstweek at the Beach Club lessthan a month after it officiallyopened.”

Nine months after that, their first daughter, Casey, was born. (It was carnivaltime after all; not an uncom-mon occurrence.) Eventually, the Drewes acquired 13weeks at the ABC, of whichsix they use personally towinter in Aruba. Their sec-ond daughter, Dyan, has beencoming to the island annuallysince she was one month old.“Now that we are retired, wetravel quite a bit, all over theworld, but Aruba is our placefor the family to be together,”

explains Sam. “Our daugh-ters now live far away fromus, one in Texas and the otherFlorida, but we have twoweeks for each of them, sowe can all be together hereand relax. The other weeksgo to friends and family, sowe are just one big happygroup for around four of theweeks we stay here duringthe winter.” They figure theyhave had as many as 24 gath-ered around the pool duringthose weeks.

The Drewes have their fa-vorite restaurants, and everyTuesday and Thursday forsunset you will find them alltaking a sailing trip on the

Octopus trimaran. It wason the boat where Dyanfirst learned to snorkel, eventually to make herliving as a scuba instruc-tor in the Florida Keys. For fifteen years, War-ren’s father, Wayne, wasa regular fixture at theABC and on the boat, beloved by all. When hepassed on, it was on theOctopus that Warrenspread his ashes at sea,as Wayne had wished.

“People ask us whywe come back to Arubafor so many weeks everyyear,” explain theDrewes. “We have vis-

ited islands in nearly everysea and ocean in the world, and certainly, most theCaribbean, but really, nonecompare. No where have weever seen such a beautifulbeach as Eagle Beach; youcan walk for miles in themorning and barely see asoul. It is so tranquil, yet,Aruba has something foreveryone. Our big group hasvery diverse interests, butthey are always kept busy. There is golf, the greatbeaches, fabulous restau-rants, excellent SCUBA div-ing, and every water activityimaginable, with new thingsevery year. The lovely, hos-pitable people remain thesame, and we look forward to

seeing the wonderful friendswe and our daughters havemade at the Beach Club. Itreally is “our home awayfrom home.”

Though Warren and Samhave never been named “Dis-tinguished Visitors,” or “Am-

bassadors of Goodwill,” theyhave also never sought it out.“Just being here every yearwith our loved ones, and nowour grandchildren, is morethan enough.”

"I have come to the certaintythat my strengths, due to anadvanced age, are no longersuited to an adequate exerciseof the Petrine ministry," hesaid.

As tributes poured in fromacross the world, the Vaticanemphasised that the formerJoseph Ratzinger was not re-signing due to any illness, following speculation overhis frail appearance at recentceremonies.

Vatican spokesman Fed-erico Lombardi said he ex-pected a conclave ofcardinals to be held in Marchwithin 15 or 20 days of theresignation and a new popeelected before Easter Sundayon March 31.

"The pope caught us a bitby surprise," Lombardi saidat a hastily-arranged pressconference.

Benedict's brother GeorgRatzinger told AFP he hadknown "for a few months"that he was planning to resignand was "feeling the burdenof his age."

"It is a positive thing thathe is handing over the officeto younger hands," he added.

Some faithful said theyhoped the move would signala major change for the Churchafter a conservative pontifi-cate that has been marred byscandals including most no-tably clerical child abuse.

Vatican observers have al-ready begun speculating overwho could succeed Benedict, with online betters tipping anAfrican pope as the most likely.

But some say the numberof cardinals from Europe andNorth America who can votefor a new pope -- 76 out of118 -- could sway the choiceto a Western state.

German Chancellor An-gela Merkel led tributes frompolitical and religious leadersacross the globe, hailingBenedict as "one of the mostsignificant religious thinkersof our time".

US President BarackObama offered "our appreci-ation and prayers" on behalfof all Americans.

Justin Welby, leader of theworld's Anglicans, said heunderstood "with a heavyheart" Benedict's decision, and that he had held his officewith "great dignity, insightand courage".

The Ashkenazi ChiefRabbi of Israel said BenedictXVI had improved ties be-tween the two religions andwhich helped reduce anti-Semitism around the world.

Benedict, who succeededthe late pope John Paul II in2005 and is known as adiehard traditionalist and alightning rod for controversy, will retire to a monasterywithin the Vatican walls.

He said his "strength ofmind and body... has deterio-rated in me to the extent thatI have had to recognise myincapacity to adequately fulfilthe ministry entrusted to me."

He said he would be step-ping down at 8:00 pm (1900GMT) on February 28,adding that he was "wellaware of the seriousness ofthis act".

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Theheirs of a Dutch Internet inven-tor are suing Facebook for al-legedly infringing his patentswith the US social networkingsite's "like" and "share" but-tons, court documents seen onMonday said.

The family of Jos Van DerMeer, a computer scientist, programmer and inventor whodied in 2004, is bieng repre-sented by patent-holding com-pany Rembrandt in the suitbrought before a US court inVirginia on February 14.

The suit for unspecifieddamages claims Facebook's in-fringement of two relatedpatents filed by Van Der Meer, who is described as "a pioneerin the development of user-friendly web-based technolo-gies", in 1998.

One patent "claimed a noveltechnology that gave ordinarypeople... the ability to createand use what Van Der Meercalled a personal diary," courtpapers said.

The system allowed peopleto "collect personal informa-tion and third-party content, or-ganise the information

chronologically on a person-alised web page and share theinformation with a selectedgroup of people, such as theuser's friends, through the useof user-settable privacy lev-els."

The second patent is fortechnology that enables "theautomatic transfer, at a user'srequest, of third-party contentfrom a content provider's web-site to the user's personal diarypage" -- akin to Facebook's"share" or "like" buttons.

Van Der Meer set up a com-pany to commercialise his in-ventions, Aduna, registered thesurfbook.com website, andlaunched a pilot system, butdied in 2004.

The inventor's family, in-cluding his widow, enlisted thehelp of Rembrandt, which saysit works to help inventors andpatent owners enforce theirfights against companies thatuse their inventions withoutpaying for them.

The suit notes that one ofFacebook's own patents citedone of Van Der Meer's patentsand so the company was awareof the infringement.

However, it added, "The de-valuation will not have any im-pact on the company's 2012results of operations or finan-cial position."

In a long-awaited move, onFriday Caracas announced itwould devalue the bolivar by32 percent, effective Wednes-day, on the orders of cancer-stricken President HugoChavez.

The bolivar will move fromfrom 4.3 to the dollar to 6.3, atthe official exchange rate.

Shares of Colgate, themaker of global consumergoods, including Colgatetoothpaste, Palmolive soap,Ajax cleaner and Sanex skinproducts, were down 0.1 per-cent at $108.43 after losing 1.5percent Friday on the devalua-tion announcement.

LONDON (AFP) - Oil pricesfell in London on Monday asdealers took profits from re-cent gains, but the market re-bounded in New York as theeuro strengthened against thedollar after supportive com-ments from the Bundesbank.

Brent North Sea crude fordelivery in March fell 42 centsto $118.48 per barrel in Lon-don late afternoon deals.

The contract on Fridayscaled a nine-month peak at$119.17 a barrel on healthyeconomic data -- and owing togeopolitical concerns aftercrude producer Iran rejected aUS offer on nuclear talks, traders said.

Meanwhile on Monday,New York's main contract, light sweet crude for March orWest Texas Intermediate(WTI), rebounded by $1.02 to$96.74 a barrel, clawing backearlier losses.

The weaker greenbackmakes dollar-priced crudecheaper for buyers usingstronger currencies. In turn, that tends to stimulate oil de-mand and prices.

Meanwhile, analysts saidoptimism over stronger energydemand sparked by robust USand Chinese trade data shouldkeep prices supported.

The US Commerce Depart-ment reported last Friday thatthe trade deficit shrank morethan expected in December to$38.5 billion, its lowest levelsince January 2010, from a re-vised $48.6 billion in Novem-ber.
