TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2016 (PAGE 4) DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU Uttar Pradesh garners maximum deposits under Jan Dhan NEW DELHI, Dec 12: Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with the most deposits in Jan Dhan accounts, followed by West Bengal and Rajasthan. The total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts stand at Rs 74,610 crore as of December 7, as per Finance Ministry data. UP has about 3.8 crore Jan Dhan accounts with deposits of Rs 12,021.32 crore. It is fol- lowed by West Bengal with 2.44 accounts and deposits of Rs 9,193.75 crore. Rajasthan comes in third with 1.9 crore accounts and Rs 6,291.1 crore deposits, followed by Bihar (2.62 crore accounts, Rs 6,160.44 crore deposits). Total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts surged by around Rs 28,973 crore in about a month after the announcement of ban on old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 cur- rency notes. Despite the surge, about one- fifth of these accounts still have no balance. Last week, the Government said that inflows into Jan Dhan accounts have come down sig- nificantly after it warned people not to allow their accounts to be misused for converting black money into white. After setting a cash deposit limit of Rs 50,000 in these accounts, the Government had on November 18 cautioned account holders that they will be prosecuted under the I-T Act for allowing misuse of their bank accounts through deposit of black money in Rs 500/1,000 notes during the 50-day window till December 30. The directive came against the backdrop of reports that some people were misusing other persons' bank accounts to convert their black money into new denomination notes. A police spokesman said that mishap took place at around 8.30 pm at Bera Gua village in Kalakote. The tipper bearing registration number JK11A/ 5748 rolled down in to a gorge, resulting onto the death of one person. The tipper driver Slam Din was critically injured. The deceased was identified as Yash Pal (25), son of Gulshan Kumar, resident of Kalakote area. The body of the deceased was sent to CHC Kalakote. The police has registered a case in this connection. Guterres sworn in as UN Secretary-General UNITED NATIONS, Dec 12: Antonio Guterres, a former Portuguese Prime Minister, was today sworn in as the ninth UN Secretary-General, succeeding Ban Ki-moon as the chief of the 71-year old world body. President of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson administered the Oath of Office to Guterres at a special plenary meeting of the 193-member General Assembly here. Guterres, 67, was unani- mously appointed by the General Assembly as the suc- cessor to Ban, after the 15- nation Security Council had in October decided by acclama- tion to send his name to the Assembly for final approval. The former UN refugee chief takes over from Ban on January 1. Ban's second five-year term as the world's top diplomat ends on December 31. During the special plenary meeting, speakers paid tribute to Ban. One dies inroad accidentExcelsior Correspondent
RAJOURI, Dec 12: Oneperson was killed while anotherinjured when a tipper met withan accident in Kalakote area ofdistrict Rajouri late thisevening.
A police spokesman saidthat mishap took place ataround 8.30 pm at Bera Guavillage in Kalakote. The tipperbearing registration numberJK11A/ 5748 rolled down in toa gorge, resulting onto thedeath of one person. The tipperdriver Slam Din was criticallyinjured.
The deceased was identifiedas Yash Pal (25), son of GulshanKumar, resident of Kalakotearea. The body of the deceasedwas sent to CHC Kalakote. Thepolice has registered a case inthis connection.
