Board Of FreeholdersReorganizaticns o< Bergen County's Board ot Freeholder?

are festive occasions. Last Saturday's w a s n< exception.A board that felt and knew it had done a good |<>b re-

orgamaed for tbe year and elected Nicholas. A . Kuiken of Fair- lawn as chairman.

John H . Edwards of - East Rutherford has long been a. member of good standing on the board

But to make up an honor roll, every member of the board would have to be mentioned as well as the long list of 0-.int>, employees who work their hardest for the county at low pay.

Bergen County has the lowest per capita cost of government in N ew Jersey. This in itself is a commendation for the freeholders who have served the county. Certainly, there w a s every reason to spend. New York on one side, Essex and H udson and Passaic Counties—ail heavy spenders— an the other set fa«t examples.

But Bergen's freeholders withheld and cur present low tax rate is the result.

Bergen's financial status is the best in New jersey. It is true we do not offer parks, vocational schools, widt

hospital jervice or any of the expansive highway systems chat may be found in some counties.

B ut when the time conies that we can procure those things —paying as we go— Bergen will have tbem!

T o the new Board of Freeholders—good luck!T o the old— thank you1

LOOKIN G THEM OVERWith The Observer

Excitement abounded no end around the township last Sunday when it was learned that the Rocknes basketball clufc was going to play the Collegiates in sort of a grudge battle a t the local gym.

The Collegiates were to play the Passaic Centuries but the Passaic quintet failed to show up.

Both teams boasted their laurels recently. T he Rocknes, although they lost their first game, came on for the rest oi th« season undefeated, in games which numbered nineteen.

T he Collegiates on the other hand have played fewer games (1 4 ’to be exact) but have won them all. N aturally tw o such teams in the township would automaticaly incite rivaly. It did and no foolin. «

This column suggested a playoff between the tw o teams to decide which had the better aggregation. The set up was a natural and the Lyndhurst gym was packed with a gallery which all but overflowed the guard rails.

The Collegiates were far and away the better coordinated team that afternoon. They played spectacular ball with shot? finding their way through the hoops from the most unorthodox positions. They piled up a huge lead and were leading 20 to 9 a t halftime. * « 4 4 |

The Rocknes came back in a fighting attempt and scored 1 ? points to the Collegiates 13 in the last period.

Ed Lilley was responsible for ten of the Q illege boys 33 points and his teammate Franky Rumpleton tallied 9 points Both boys are veterans on the court and they made the ball appear as tho it h*d an extensive education in difficult maneuvers. > * f t '

Al Demarest was high scorer for the losers w ith 9 points His teammates Charley Castles and Charlie Coon scored six points each. All the players from both teams were a t one time varsity men on former Lyndhurst High quintets.

W e asked for a playoff to decide once and for all which was the better team and the score 33 to 24 seems to prove conclusively that the Collegiates, for the afternoon at least, was the better of the two. But it is customary for colleges and high schools to give their opfHinents a return match and in these return matches anything is liable to happen. If and when the Collegiates do offer the Rocknes a return match it should be announced at least two weeks previous to game time and tickets should be put on reserve or a lot of rabid basketball fans will be unable to see the game.

It is safe to say at this point that the Collegiates are the best team in the Township and in view uf their record they rate pretty, near the top in the county.

Fie, fie and for shame. It it coming to a pretty paAs w hen! Christ the girls beat the boys in basketball or in any sport for that matter. W e've heard, unofficially of course, that women were gradually invading the men's domain and some say that in the future, the female sex would predominate. W e scoffed, "that's the oil,” we said, “don't let your imagination run away with- you.”

Now we are beginning to wonder, vaguely of course, very vaguely But be that as it may, the fact is that the Collegiate Co-eds, playing the preliminary game at the local -gym Sunday, heat an all star hoys team 10 to 8. Imagine! Girls beating boys and before all those people.

Every one should have h«ard this one Kit if they haven't. Lou Puntolillo, Bert IVrelli and a couple of others were hunting deer in South Jersey, among the Pines in the Barnegat section. Said Lou to Bert Perelli, "W e're going to start a drive, you’re to stay on the truck W e ll work the deer annmd to you and when they ct*ne into view, give them b«»h barrels. " “ Right," said Bert and he posted himself tin the truck.

It .took a little Time for Louie and the others to locate their elusive qtiarty hut finally they ruunckd up a m lty six- p»4nt buck By MSMMVering they circled the deer gradually an? when the hunters reached the truck, the deer's tracks indicated that it passed so ehwe to the truck that if i t lifted one foot ever »o slightly it could have rested it on the running board.

Bert must be alter the deer, they thought. They trailed th* deer expecting momentarily to hear a shot and to see the buck kicking its last in the dust They foUowed the spr«r for half art hour hut did not see anything bigger than a titmouse Finally, they tramped back to the truck wfondenng what be- calfce of Bert and the d te r they climbed into die truck to rest up. They stumbled over a form which bettered “Watch what M l ai e disng, can't yuu let a guy deep?" Bert "its* from the truck where he hid, a tew minutes before, enjoyed forty or more winks.

shouted Lou, “ you sleep, when a beaut o i a deer you cmuld've hit him on the head with the gun!”

in the others, "W hat a hunter you are!" Bert — In his very best sourgrape manner he Said. |

"Don't get sore. 1 probably would have missed him anyway ‘
