POTDThere are 57 blue birds sitting on a tree branch outside. A gust of wind came and knocked 2/3 of the birds off the branch. How many birds remain?
Algebraic Expressions
• Variable- a letter or symbol that can represent a variety of numbers. (This can include letters, boxes, flowers, triangles, and other symbols)
• Expressions- statements without an = sign. EX: 2U + 3
• Equations - numerical sentences that use an = sign. Equations show that two expressions are equal. EX: 2U + 3 = 7
• = means “the same as”
How to Solve for an UnknownEX: 43 + n = 60• Use the inverse operation to help solve the problem. You
want to get the variable by itself.• Some number + 43 will make 60.• Inverse of addition is subtraction, so 60 – 43= n
EX: 4J= 24. When a variable is written beside a number means to multiply. Inverse of multiplication is division
• 24 ÷ 4 = J
EX: 128 – v =36 What would happen if I use the inverse here?
EX: 16K = 48

POTDThere are 893 people going on a field trip to the Mint Museum. If 7 students can fit on a bus at a time, what is the MINIMUM amount of buses needed to transport all the students?
Homework Review
Patterns• A fun part of math is creating and playing with
patterns. • Math is organized with rules to follow. • If you know what the rule is, you can create a
pattern. • When you are using symbols to represent the
pattern, you are generalizing. You are giving a statement that describes the action no matter what the numbers are.
Function Tables• The rule is often organized on a function
table.• The table may have numbers that are not
in consecutive order, but you can still find the pattern.
• Ask yourself “what did I do to 2 in order to get 7?” Use the guess and check strategy.
• You must check the rule on a few of the numbers to make sure it is a generalization.
• If you are given the output and they have to find the input then they would use the inverse of the rule.

Guided PracticeThe table to the right shows a list of numbers. For every number listed in
the table, multiply it by 2 and add What do you notice about the numbers you entered into the table? Does an even number multiplied by 2 result in an even or odd number? Why
do you think this is? Does an odd number multiplied by 2 result in an even or odd number? Why
do you think this is? Does an even number plus 1 result in an even or odd number? Why do you
think this is? Does an odd number plus 1 result in an even or odd number? Why do you
think this is? Explain why the numbers you entered in the table are all odd.

POTDTonya had 15 marbles. She gave 5 marbles to her sister. What fraction did she give to her sister?

Shape Patterns• Repeating: You can easily predict what’s next
because the pattern continues to repeat itself. EX:
• Growing: There is still a pattern. The shapes “grow” in size and the numbers in the pattern grow as well.
EX:
• Shrinking: The shapes get “smaller” and so do the numbers in the pattern.
EX:
Guided Practice• Students in Mrs. Como’s class are making up their own growing patterns.
Angela uses triangle pattern blocks to make a growing fir tree.• Use pattern blocks to build and draw the next two fir trees in this pattern.• Complete the table of values.• What is the Rule?
Tree # Number of blocks added
TOTAL number of blocks

Guided Practice• PROBLEM: Restaurants often use small square tables to seat customers. One chair is placed
on each side of the table. Four chairs fit around one square table [Figure 1]. Restaurants handle larger groups of customers by pushing together tables. Two tables pushed together [Figure 2] will seat six customers.
• Draw a diagram showing how many customers would be seated at three square tables pushed together [Figure 3].
• Complete the table for reference:• Find a pattern you can use to predict the number of customers that may be seated at any
size table.• Describe the pattern in words Number of
TablesNumber of Customers

POTDValerie ran 15 1/5 a mile on Tuesday and 13 4/5 mile on Wednesday. How many miles did Valerie run on Tuesday and Wednesday?
Homework ReviewTell how many of each shape would be in the Nth and 100th pattern.
Quiz Time • Make sure you replace your variable with the
answer that you found!• Always check your answer!!!
