Move over Pokemon, a legion of new cutesy monsters is haunting Japan and set to break out all over the world after trampling the competi-

tion at home.“Yo-Kai Watch” is a nexus of manga com-

ics, anime cartoons and computer games that revolve around the life of a school boy and the monsters — “Yokai” — that he summons with his wrist strap.

While the name is unfamiliar in the West, it’s already very big business in Japan.

“We bought a lot — about 20 items — as we can rarely buy them,” Shoji Takayama said as he came out of a store with his wife, two children and a big plastic bag full of toys.

Yo-Kai Watch: Japan’s monster craze set to go international

3PLUS | TUESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2014

The family spent about 30,000 yen ($280) at YO-Kai Watch Town, a tem-porary shop on “First Avenue Tokyo Station”, a street inside the Japanese capital’s main train station.

“It’s fun to catch Yokai and become friends,” nine-year-old Naoya said of the video games. “The characters are cute,” added his sister, Sae, 11.

Such is the demand that tickets to get into the store were distributed in online lotteries, allowing up to 432 peo-ple to visit every day.

The first group of customers included an eight-year-old boy who got an early Shinkansen bullet train with his mother from neighbouring Shizuoka prefecture and a middle-aged man with a handheld console in his back pocket.

Yuuichi Ishii, who runs the Toy Cats toy store in Tokyo, said the demo-graphic spread of fans is indicative of how popular the monster-collecting phenomenon has become.

The secret to its success, he says, is its cute characters and the non-violent way the main character interacts with monsters — defeated ones aren’t killed, but become friends.

“It’s becoming like a second Pokemon,” he said.

FolkloreMatt Alt, a pop culture commen-

tator who co-authored Yokai Attack! a book detailing the monsters and spooks of Japanese popular culture, says the series draws heavily on folk-lore archetypes.

“These have been around for hun-dreds of years as folktales. And now

this series has woven them together to make a new sort of content out of them,” Alt said.

Protagonist Keita Amano is an “average” fifth-grader (around 10 years old) who happens to get a watch that can summon monsters.

With the assistance of a “butler” monster and friends, he fights beings that trouble humans, beats them and befriends them.

YO-Kai Watch shares with its pred-ecessor Pokemon “a very similar sort of collecting mechanism” said Alt, where the main character battles monsters and then owns them.

“The big difference between YO-Kai Watch and Pokemon, however, is that

Pokemon is set in a pure fantasy world... whereas YO-Kai Watch is definitely set in at least a version of Japan,” he said.

Events take place in Japanese streets, with children living in Japanese houses and eating Japanese food, he said.

“I think that’s one of the reasons it’s so popular with kids here, because it makes you feel like these monsters could be just around the corner,” he said.

And that appeal is certainly paying off for the manufacturers.

Replica versions of the watch worn by little Keita — which allow the wearer to insert different medals to

produce different sound effects — are in such short supply that their price has rocketed on online auction sites.

Bandai Namco Holdings said it would produce two million units this year, along with around 100 million medals, contributing to the eye-pop-ping 10bn yen ($93m) worth of YO-Kai Watch toys they have sold in the six months from April.

And that’s not including software sales.

YO-Kai Watch 2, developed by Level-5 for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console and released in July, saw its sales exceed 2.3 million units by early September, on top of over 1.2 million copies of the first version, released last year.

Financial data for the sales were not readily available, but the company confirmed plans to release products in foreign markets.

Level-5 president Akihiro Hino will be at the Tokyo Game Show when it starts on Thursday, just outside the Japanese capital.

Alt said he expected YO-Kai Watch would make the jump abroad, where Japanese companies are formidable because of the tight interweaving of their product lines.

“They all work together in what’s called the media mix where the video game, the comic book, the animation, the toys all support each other,” he said.

“Japanese toy companies have fig-ured out a system for strengthening and cross-promoting their products that is unrivalled anywhere else in the world.” AFP

Setting a pioneering new performance benchmark as a duo of the strongest and fastest mid-engine sports cars by Porsche, the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS have now arrived at Porsche Centre Doha, Al

Boraq Automobiles Co. With powerful, uprated engines, the new models also feature the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system as standard.

Ahed Dawood, Brand Manager of Porsche Centre Doha, said: “Ever since the legendary 904 Carrera GTS, first revealed back in 1963, the GTS model line has been globally revered as a first among equals. The Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS now represent an extension of a very special type in the Porsche blood-line. Standing for Gran Turismo Sport, Porsche con-tinues to build on its tradition of developing authentic sports cars for both the race track and everyday use with these latest, ground-breaking models.”

In the new GTS models, Porsche is implementing the two strongest engines that have ever been used in a production Boxster or Cayman. The flat six-cylinder boxers are based on the 3.4-litre engines of the Boxster S and Cayman S. Thanks to fine-tuning they deliver 15 hp more power meaning the Boxster GTS now has an output of 330 hp, while the Cayman GTS delivers 340 hp. Nominal torque has also been increased by ten Newton metres – ideal for powerful gear transitions during acceleration.

Both mid-engine sports cars are equipped with the Sport Chrono package as standard. The results: in conjunction with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and active Sport Plus button, the Boxster GTS sprints from a standstill

to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the Cayman GTS is one-tenth of a second faster. The new roadster is the first Boxster to top the 280km/h mark, reaching a maximum speed of 281km/h. The sports coupé is even faster at 285km/h.

Another standard GTS component is the sport exhaust system that has been optimally tuned for the new models. It now offers an even greater range of sound with the driver able to activate the sport exhaust system via a switch, or via the Sport Plus button on the centre console.

The driving dynamics of the top-end, derivatives of the Boxster and Cayman models are exceptional. The interplay of the mid-engine concept and chassis tuning aims to position both the sports coupé and the roadster at the top within their respective classes. A crucial component is the standard PASM adap-tive damping control system with a suspension that is 10 mm lower. The optimally controlled damping improves grip and provides greater driving stability, more comfort, enhanced performance and shorter

braking distances.A Porsche of the GTS category is always easy to

identify. The new models continue the line of the Panamera GTS and Cayenne GTS with individual traits. The most prominent formal difference is the entirely new front-end with modified spoiler lip, while the new nose is responsible for the 30 mm longer body and highlights the extended lines of the two-seater even more.

The dynamic look of the front is further accentu-ated by smoked bi-xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as standard. The LED daytime running lights with their black sur-rounds in the outer air inlets radiate a very narrow beam of light and are also smoked.

The purposeful appearance is completed by 20-inch wheels in Carrera-S design, which can also be ordered painted entirely in gloss black. The GTS models are also introducing the 20-inch Turbo wheel from the 911 as a new option for the models.

The interiors of the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS match the sporty exterior designs in terms of further high-end finishing and dynamic looks. Like other Porsche GTS models, both two-seaters come with standard sports seats and leather interi-ors enhanced with Alcantara elements. The models also feature a black GTS badge embroidered on the headrests, a tachometer with GTS badge and door sill plates that also display a black badge. Trim strips are available on request, for the first time in black anodised aluminium. A Sport Design steering wheel is fitted as standard.

Boxster GTS is priced at QR253,500 and Cayman GTS at QR257,000. The Peninsula

By Melissa d’Arabian

Here’s the thing about baked white fish, such as had-dock or cod: We know we should eat more of it because it’s such a healthy choice. Trouble is, we also know that most baked white fish is dry and

tasteless. And I speak from experience. I hate to throw my mom under the

bus, but her baked fish — while certainly healthy with its minimalist squeeze of lemon and tiny dot or two of butter — was uninspired, flavourless, unsatisfying and, perhaps worst of all, overcooked. My sister and I used to sneak emergency cookies from my mom’s purse on baked fish night just to fill up. So how healthy was it, really?

All of which is why I wanted to change baked fish night for future generations, or at least for my own daughters. My goal for this recipe was to preserve the health benefits of cod or haddock, while making a dish that I would actually crave. I wanted a baked white fish that is a satisfying, comforting, homey food that I could feel good about feeding my family, and that I could make easily on a weeknight.

Enter my baked cod with parsley sauce. I took inspiration from two unlikely bedfellows — the flavourful Argentinian chimichurri sauce and a cassoulet, the ultimate creamy-bean French comfort food. The result was loved by all in my house. OK, most. I won’t say which of my four daughters couldn’t be convinced...

But the recipe couldn’t have been easier. I whipped up the sauce in minutes (you could do this part a day in advance and keep in the refrigerator), then layered white beans, fish and the dill-parsley sauce and popped it all in the oven. The extra fibre and protein from the beans and healthy fats from the sliced almonds help make this dish truly filling.

Finally... a baked white fish dish that doesn’t need a cookie chaser!

Start to finish: 30 minutes (10 minutes active)

Servings: 4

IngredientsFor the sauce:1 large bunch parsley, roughly chopped

(about 1 1/2 cups)1/2 cup chopped fresh dill2 shallots, roughly chopped3 cloves garlic, chopped1 tablespoon red vinegar1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil1/2 teaspoon kosher salt1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For the fish:Two 15-ounce cans white beans, drained,

rinsed and blotted dryFour 5-ounce cod or haddock filletsSalt and ground black pepper1/2 cup sliced almondsLemon wedges, for servingHeat the oven to 400 F.

Method:In a blender, combine all ingredients

for the sauce. Pulse until mixed, but still chunky (about 10 pulses). If there isn’t enough liquid to blend the herbs, add another tablespoon of vinegar. Set aside.

In a 3-quart baking dish, spread the beans in an even layer. Season with salt and pepper.

Use paper towels to blot away any excess moisture from the fish fillets (this is especially important if they are thawed from frozen). Season the cod lightly with salt and pepper, then set the fillets on top of the beans. Drizzle the parsley sauce over the fish and beans, then bake until the fish is almost cooked through (bright white and opaque), about 15 to 18 minutes.

Sprinkle the almonds over the top, then return to the oven and bake until the almonds are golden, about another 3 minutes.

Thriller No Good Deed, the story of an escaped convict who terrorizes a woman and her children inside their home, seized the top

spot on US and Canadian box office charts over the weekend, beating fam-ily friendly sequel Dolphin Tale 2.

No Good Deed collected $24.5m in domestic ticket sales from Friday through Sunday, according to estimates from tracking firm Rentrak. Dolphin Tale 2, the sequel to a 2011 hit about a plucky marine mammal, finished sec-ond with $16.6m.

Last weekend’s winner, Marvel’s hit space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, came in third with $8m.

Guardians became the first film of 2014 to bring in more than $300m at North American theatres, distributor Walt Disney Co said. The movie’s global sales reached $612m.

No Good Deed stars Idris Elba as an escaped prisoner who shows up claim-ing car trouble at the suburban Atlanta home of a mother played by Taraji P Henson. After she offers to let him use her phone, the man invades her home and forces her to fight for the family’s survival.

The movie, released by Sony, beat forecasts from Box Office Mojo for a debut of $19m. The film played in about 2,175 theatres and cost $13.2m to make.

Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony, chalked up the film’s success to cast chemistry and successful behind-the-scenes efforts.

“It really was a team effort, the pro-duction, the marketing, the distribu-tion,” Bruer said. “We believed in the film, and knew audiences liked it.”

The debut of Dolphin Tale 2 felt short of the first movie, which opened with $19.1m in 2011 and went on to earn $95.4m around the world.

The original Dolphin Tale told the real-life story of a dolphin named Winter that lost its tail in a crab trap and was rehabilitated with a prosthetic tail. In the sequel, the team that saved Winter seeks a new dolphin companion for it after its surrogate mother dies. Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd star in the film.

The sequel cost $36m to make, according to Box Office Mojo, and was produced by Alcon Entertainment.

In fourth place was Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, based on the series that began with 1980s comic books.

Starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Whoopi Goldberg, the film was produced by the special-effects-loving Michael Bay.

Comedy Let’s Be Cops, starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr, col-lected $4.3m, taking fifth place.

In sixth place was a new entry, drama The Drop, which tells the story of a man who unwittingly finds himself at the center of a robbery gone wrong. It pulled in $4.2m from its debut in 809 theatres and stars Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini.

Seventh was teen melodrama If I

Stay with $4.1m.Eighth was The November Man with

$2.75m. The thriller stars former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan as an ex-CIA agent lured out of retire-ment for one last dangerous mission.

In ninth spot was The Giver, based on Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel, starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites, which took $2.6m.

And rounding out the top 10, with

$2.5m, was The Hundred-Foot Journey, a romantic comedy with Helen Mirren and Om Puri as culture-clashing restaurateurs.

The Drop and Let’s Be Cops were released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of 21st Century Fox. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

Amy Winehouse statue unveiled in London

A life-size bronze statue of late singer Amy Winehouse was unveiled in Camden town neighbourhood in north London on the occasion of her

31st birth anniversary. Winehouse’s parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, and fans gathered to remember the late singer Sunday, reports The Guardian. “It’s a day of incredibly mixed emotions. They don’t put stat-ues up for people who are with us anymore so it reinforces the fact that physically she’s gone but spiritually she’ll never leave us. I feel sad, very, very sad,” Mitch said.

Created by sculptor Scott Eaton, the statue is mostly colourless -- aside from a red rose in Winehouse’s signature beehive hairdo.

Last seen as Vidya Balan’s love interest in Bobby Jasoos, the actor says his role in Khamoshiyan is “supremely important” and that “playing it with perfection is equally important.”

“One of the things that is of utmost importance is the pro-gression of my character. A part of that is me sporting long hair.”

“This is an absolute require-ment and thus, I can’t take up any projects because the interesting ones that are coming my way need me to chop off my locks,” Ali said in a statement.

Produced under the Vishesh Films banner, the Karan Dara directorial also features Sapna Pabbi and Gurmeet Chaudhary.

Tepid response to Deepika, Bipasha films

Bollywood divas Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu entered theatres with Finding Fanny and Creature 3D respectively, but neither could rock the box office.

If Deepika’s English language quirky drama has appealed to niche audi-ence, Bipasha’s scary film do not have too many takers either, say experts.

Both films came out on Friday. Finding Fanny has managed to collect approximately `100m, while Creature 3D could manage to earn `68.8m in two days.

For Finding Fanny, Homi Adajania went behind the camera, while Vikram Bhatt helmed Creature 3D.

“Finding Fanny has earned close to ̀ 100m. Masses won’t go for movies like Finding Fanny. It is popular in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said.

However, the film starring Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia has been recommended by celebri-ties like Shekhar Kapur, Anupam Kher and Neha Dhupia.

The box office business of Creature 3D indicates that it has not succeeded in its endeavour of scaring people. Also starring Imran Abbas, Bhatt’s direc-torial has not received encouraging feedback.

“The genre and 3D aspects are interesting, but the subject is not strong,” said Thadani.

Film critic Anupama Chopra also tweeted: “This creature should have demanded a better script.” IANS

High protein diets may lower blood pressure

Adults who consume a high-protein diet may be at a lower risk for developing high blood

pressure, research shows.Researchers from Boston University School of

Medicine (BUSM) found that participants con-suming highest amount of protein (an average of 100 gram protein/day) had a 40 percent lower risk of having high blood pressure compared to the lowest intake level.

“Protein intake may play a role in the long-term prevention of high blood pressure,” said Lynn Moore, an associate professor of medicine at BUSM.

During the study, researchers analysed pro-tein intakes of healthy participants and followed them for development of high blood pressure over an 11-year period.

They found that adults who consumed more protein, whether from animal or plant sources, had statistically significantly lower systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure levels after four years of follow-up.

“We also found that consuming more dietary protein also was associated with lower long-term risks for high blood pressure,” Moore noted.

When the diet also was characterised by higher intakes of fibre, higher protein intakes led to 40-60 percent reductions in high blood pressure risk.

“The findings suggest that we need to revisit optimal protein intake for optimal heart health,” researchers concluded in the study reported in the American Journal of Hypertension.

Vitamin B1 deficiency can damage your brainInclude more vitamin B1-rich food in your diet

as neurologists have underlined that deficiency of a single vitamin B1 (or thiamine) can cause a potentially fatal brain disorder.

The brain disorder called Wernicke encepha-lopathy typically occurs in people who have dis-orders such as alcoholism and anorexia that lead to malnourishment.

“Wernicke encephalopathy is an example of the wide range of brain diseases called encepha-lopathies that are caused by metabolic disorders and toxic substances,” said Matthew McCoyd, a neurologist at Loyola University Medical Center in the US.

Untreated, the condition can lead to irreversi-ble brain damage and death, the researchers said.

Symptoms of the disorder can include confu-sion, hallucinations, coma, loss of muscle coordi-nation and vision problems such as double vision and involuntary eye movements.

“Toxic and metabolic encephalopathies may range in severity from the acute confusional state to frank coma,” McCoyd added.

Wernicke encephalopathy is a medical emer-gency that requires immediate thiamine treat-ment either by injection or IV.

“In the absence of treatment, deficiency can lead to irreversible brain damage and death with an estimated mortality of 20 percent,” the Loyola neurologists wrote.

Vitamin B1 is found in a wide variety of foods including watermelon, cereal grains, oatmeal, potatoes and eggs.

The report appeared in the journal Scientific American Medicine.

Whether the goal is to finish a mara-thon, polish a ten-nis game or make

the most of that hour at the gym, fitness experts say pacing can spell the difference between success and stagnation.

Setting the proper work-out pace, or the distribution of energy during exercise, deflects boredom and fatigue, syncs body and mind, and enables the eve-ryday exerciser to keep pushing the envelope.

Dr Kevin G Thompson, author of Pacing: Individual Strategies for Optimal Performance, believes how people prepare their bodies and minds for activity is limited by their lack of understanding about how to pace the exercise.

“Unless the athlete knows what the ideal pace is, how can he or she train properly to improve performance?” said Thompson, director of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise at the University of Canberra, Australia.

His book details pacing strategies specific to activi-ties from triathlons to tennis.

In marathon races, Thompson said, the classic beginner’s error — starting too fast to try to keep up with the better runners — causes a mind-body split.

“You body’s feedback says you’re exercising too hard even as your brain knows you’ve still got a long distance to go,” he said. “That makes for a negative experience.”

Group classes, which usually cater to all fitness levels, are generally paced around a bell curve model, explained Donna Cyrus, senior vice president of pro-gramming at Crunch, a chain of US fitness centres.

“In a 45-to 60-minute class, people start at a

moderate level, push into harder exercises to a point of highest expenditure about 30 to 40 min-utes in, then drop back down till the heart rate returns to its rest-ing state,” Cyrus explained.

Interval training, which involves alternating high inten-sity exercise with recovery peri-ods, is another way classes are paced, according to Cyrus.

Neal Pire, a strength and conditioning specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine, said the talk test, also called the ventilatory thresh-old (VT) is a good way for the individual exerciser to gauge intensity.

It is measured by different levels. Below level VT1 speech is comfortable, but at VT1 it requires some effort. Above VT1 but below the next level, VT2, speaking is possible, but not really comfortable. At VT2, speaking is limited to a few

words.“Once you get close to Ventilator Threshold No.

2, where you can barely keep a conversation going, you are in that training zone where you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck.” Pire said.

“You want to stay just below that point to keep improving over time,” he added.

Research shows that mental toughness is one pace-maintaining factor that separates the elite athlete from the casual exerciser, Thompson said.

“Towards the end of a long race, the non-elites will distract themselves from discomfort, say with music or thoughts of their family,” he said.

“But an elite athlete will zone in on discomfort and use those feelings as a gauge to examine how much they have left.“

Two prominent US hospitals are prepar-ing to launch trials with diabetics and chronic disease patients using Apple Inc’s HealthKit, offering a glimpse of how the

iPhone maker’s ambitious take on healthcare will work in practice.

HealthKit, which is still under development, is the centre of a new healthcare system by Apple. Regulated medical devices, such as glucose monitors with accompanying iPhone apps, can send informa-tion to HealthKit. With a patient’s consent, Apple’s service gathers data from various health apps so that it can be viewed by doctors in one place.

Stanford University Hospital doctors said they are working with Apple to let physicians track blood sugar levels for children with diabetes. Duke University is developing a pilot to track blood pres-sure, weight and other measurements for patients with cancer or heart disease.

The goal is to improve the accuracy and speed of reporting data, which often is done by phone and fax now. Potentially doctors would be able to warn patients of an impending problem. The pilot pro-grammes will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Apple last week mentioned the trials in a news release announcing the latest version of its operating system for phones and tablets, iOS 8, but this is the first time any details have been made public. Apple declined to comment.

Apple aims eventually to work with health care providers across the United States, including hospi-tals which are experimenting with using technology to improve preventative care to lower healthcare cost and make patients healthier.

Reuters previously reported that Apple is in talks with other US hospitals. Stanford Children’s Chief Medical Information Officer Christopher Longhurst told Reuters that Stanford and Duke were among the furthest along. Longhurst said that in the first Stanford trial, young patients with Type 1 diabetes will be sent home with an iPod touch to monitor blood sugar levels between doctor’s visits.

HealthKit makes a critical link between measuring devices, including those used at home by patients, and medical information services relied on by doc-tors, such as Epic Systems Corp, a partner already announced by Apple. Medical device makers are tak-ing part in the Stanford and Duke trials.

DexCom Inc, which makes blood sugar monitoring equipment, is in talks with Apple, Stanford, and the US Food and Drug Administration about integrat-ing with HealthKit, said company Chief Technical Officer Jorge Valdes.

DexCom’s device measures glucose levels through a tiny sensor inserted under the skin of the abdo-men. That data is transmitted every five minutes

to a hand-held receiver, which works with a blood glucose meter. The glucose measuring system then sends the information to DexCom’s mobile app, on an iPhone, for instance.

Under the new system, HealthKit can scoop up the data from DexCom, as well as other app and device makers.

Data can be uploaded from HealthKit into Epic’s “MyChart” application, where it can be viewed by clinicians in Epic’s electronic health record.

Privacy MattersWhile HealthKit promises to enhance the process

of data-sharing between physicians and those under their care, observers have noted the potential for sensitive data to be abused. Others are leery of having all their private information stored in one location, susceptible to hackers for instance.

To ensure patient privacy, Apple is considering creating a “HealthKit Certification” for third party developers, with conditions stipulating how data must be stored securely on devices and forbidding sale of

data to advertisers, according to people familiar with Apple’s plans. Apple recently updated its developer guidelines with data sharing rules for health apps.

Stanford’s Longhurst said he expects the pilot to be expanded quickly if there are no problems.

Rajiv Kumar, the physician leading Stanford’s pilot and a paediatric endocrinologist at Stanford Children’s Health, said his team may soon be able to set up alerts, so they can notify patients via Epic MyChart when their blood sugar spikes or falls.

Kumar said two young patients with diabetes have been chosen to participate in the initial trial and he hopes to extend the pilot to teens and infants.

Duke University’s Ricky Bloomfield, an internal medicine pediatrician and director of mobile strategy, hopes the pilot will help doctors access the data they need to better monitor sick patients living at home.

“This could eliminate the hassle of getting data from patients, who want to give it to us,” said Bloomfield. “HealthKit removes some of the error from patients’ manually entering their data.”

Nosy Crow Jigsaws (Free + IAP)British publisher Nosy Crow

makes marvellous picture-books, and equally marvellous book-apps. Its new release is different though: a collection of digital jigsaw puzzles using artwork from its print and app releases. They’re bought using a parent-friendly system of in-app pur-chases, although puzzles for apps you already own are unlocked automati-cally. iPhone / iPad

Yahoo News Digest (Free)This app started as an iPhone app

called Summly, which automatically summarised news stories in mobile-friendly bitesized chunks. It was bought by Yahoo then relaunched, and

now it’s expanded to Apple’s tablet, complete with weekly videos from Katie Couric, the US news broad-caster recently poached by Yahoo.

Kalley’s Machine Plus Cats (£1.99)Children’s app publishing is a fam-

ily business for Jon, Carrie, Corbett and Kalley Alexander, whose debut app is based on a drawing by (then) four year-old Kalley. It’s a charming digital picture-book tale of a girl and her machine, invented purely to stop her father from commuting to work. And the cats? They’re thrown in (not literally) for fun. iPhone / iPad

Ask Me Anything (Free)This is an official app from Reddit

for its Ask Me Anything (AMA) interviews, which have a habit of teasing interesting answers out of celebrities of all kinds. Well, most of the time. You can read existing AMAs, with their question-and-answer threads helpfully reformat-ted for faster browsing. And when an AMA is taking place, you can ask questions via the app too. iPhone

This Is All Yours (Free)This app is one for fans of Alt-J, the

Mercury Prize-winning band who are returning with their second album This

Is All Yours. The app is a way to unlock and listen to its songs from specific locations in the real world: a musical

treasure hunt, of sorts. Fans are encour-aged to leave messages about the tracks for others to find too. iPhone

Emojli (Free)If you find emoji tiresome, skip

ahead quickly. This is an emoji-only messaging app, where conversations take place solely through the medium of little cartoon icons. How to play Kakuro:The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.Within each collection of cells - called a run

- any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

MEDIA SCAN A summary ofissues of the daydiscussed by the Qatari communityin the media.

• People have urged that separate counters be opened for senior citizens and those with special needs in all service centres, similar to those at the Ministry of Interior.

• People have demanded that the authorities find a way to speed up slow court proceedings. The courts are located far from one another, which also causes inconvenience.

• There are demands for strict monitoring at the entrance and exits of shopping complexes and hospitals to curb smoking there. The anti-smoking law should be implemented to put an end to smoking in public places.

• There are demands for setting up shops staffed by trained technicians

to repair electrical goods. Untrained people are doing this work, which sometimes forces people to buy new goods because they are unable to carry out proper repairs.

• There are demands that the authorities set up proper road signs to guide commuters to work sites since many signs have wrong information and contain spelling errors.

• There are proposals for setting up institutes to train labourers before they are deployed on development projects.

• There are proposals to make it mandatory for companies to set up tents for labourers at worksites so that they can have their meals there, and to protect them from heat during summer.

Chinese city creates mobile phone laneTaking a cue from an American TV

programme, the Chinese city of Chongqing has created a smartphone sidewalk lane, offering a path for those too engrossed in messaging and tweet-ing to watch where they’re going.

But the property manager says it’s intended to be ironic — to remind peo-ple that it’s dangerous to tweet while walking the street.

“There are lots of elderly people and children in our street, and walking with your cellphone may cause unnecessary collisions here,” said Nong Cheng, the marketing official with Meixin Group, which manages the area in the city’s entertainment zone.

Meixin has marked a 50m stretch of pavement with two lanes: one that prohibits cellphone use next to one that allows pedestrians to use them — at their “own risk.” Nong said the idea came from a similar stretch of pavement in Washington created by National Geographic Television in July as part of a behaviour experiment.

She said that pedestrians were not taking the new lanes seriously, but that many were snapping pictures of the signs and sidewalk. “Those using their cell-phones of course have not heeded the markings on the pavement,” she said. “They don’t notice them.” AP
