Missing Mass? We need your help! Do you know of parishioners

who are home bound or who are in a nursing home

and can't get to Mass? Please let us know! We

don't know necessarily if people move or can't get to

Mass. Please help us make sure our home bound

brothers and sisters receive the life giving Eucharist

that we all so desperately need! Call the parish office

St. Mary's is starting a new College Outreach Ministry

under the Parish Life Commission. If anyone is inter-

ested in joining this ministry ( in even a small way ) ,

or helping with special hospitality toward college stu-

dents at parish events and Masses that they would al-

ready be attending, please contact Pam Pelzel at 903-

436-4927 or [email protected].

Ooops! Has This Ever Happened to You? The ushers

come forward to begin the Offertory collection

process. You lean over and ask your spouse if

she has the envelope? She replies that she left

it on the table for you to put in your pocket.

Ooops! No envelope to give this week! In the

rush of getting off to church, we all forget the

envelope once in a while. Check out an easier

way to give. Go to Simply go to the home page

our parish website at www.stmarygrinnell.com

and scroll down to the bottom of the page. It ’ s

simple! It ’ s safe! And it keeps God at the top of

your giving list!

Or Volunteers for the Choir: Please consider par-

ticipating in the liturgy in a very special way by

singing in the choir. Currently we have 60 people

signed up - the goal is always at least 100. It cre-

ates a sort of "critical mass ” , which allows less-

experienced singers to become confident ( where

they would be uncomfortable in a smaller group ) .

currently have a K-12 Catechist Training session planned for THIS Wednesday, August 29th. If you plan to

be a Catechist ( or are interested in helping that program ) please plan to attend that evening.

In addition to the K-12 helpers we are looking for people interested in helping to lead RCIA Please contact

me ( Crystal ) if you are interested in how you might be able to share yourself with our parish Faith Forma-

tion.

Parish Council Minutes

August 15, 2018

Present: Dennis Crawford, Bill Gruman, Charles Willenbring, Joel Smith, Lucy Schmidt, John Gorman, Fr. Hodges,

Patsy Probasco, Sharon Mealey, Scot Wilson and Renny Crawford (arrived late)

1. Opening Prayer – led by Patsy Probasco at 6:33 p.m.

2. Old Business

Time and Talent Survey – Stewardship Committee has provided Commission chairs with a proposed copy of their re-

spective ‘page’ for the Survey, which needed to be proofed, altered in any way and returned to the Stewardship Commit-

tee by August 3. The Survey will be handed out during Masses the weekend of September 8/9. Bill Gruman discussed

possibility of adding a “QR Code” so people who are more technically advanced can complete their survey with that

aide.

Parish Breakfast – Dennis Crawford advised that he and Al Frischmeyer continue to make plans for the whole hog sau-

sage and pancake breakfast to be served on Sunday, September 9. Serving times have not been finalized. Gathering of

volunteers, further planning and advertising need to occur.

Parish Picnic – This potluck event is scheduled for Sunday, September 16, after the 11:00 am Mass. Anticipate grilling

hot dog/brats. No park has been reserved as of this date for the event. Would like to use this as a College Student wel-

coming event as well.

Parish Corn Boil – Joel Smith advised that he, Brad Donohoe and Brent Flander have planned this event to be held on

Saturday, August 25, with serving times of 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, Humphrey’s

sweet corn, baked beans, sweet roll, desserts, drink. Cost of $10 for adults, $5 for children. Dine in and carry out/drive

up service will be provided. All carry out/drive up needs to be pre-ordered and there is a link for this on the Parish web-

site. Volunteers from Knights of Columbus will assist in cleaning of corn prior to event.

Christ Our Life Conference – Scheduled for September 29/30 in Des Moines. Dennis Crawford indicated the plan is

still to designate a gathering point in a location in a parking lot for St Mary attendees to meet and socialize. People will

be encouraged to bring food/drinks for a ‘tailgate’ atmosphere.

3. New Business

Vision 20/20 – Fr. Hodges discussed Bishop Zinkula’s diocesan project based on Pope Francis’ ‘Joy of Gospel’ encycli-

cal and that it will culminate in an event to be held at St. Ambrose University in Davenport June 7, 8 and 9, 2019. This

large scale diocesan event will include national speakers and breakout sessions for attendees. Each parish is asked to

begin brainstorming ideas on how to celebrate the good of what we as Catholics do, the beauty of our faith, our accom-

plishments and successes. Those ideas will then be passed along to ‘listening sessions’ that will be held in October

throughout the diocese, and the large scale event for June 2019 will eventually be developed from these ideas. Bishop

Zinkula’s desire is that all persons educate themselves with the content of the Joy of Gospel. There are many resources

available on the subject, and some diocesan clergy are preparing a ‘cliff notes’ version to assist in educating parish plan-

ning committees. Fr. Hodges further advised that as a parish, we will begin praying the diocesan Vision 20/20 prayer

prior to all Masses, and this project is something we will continue to hear about in the future.

12 Month Calendar – Dennis Crawford expressed a desire for the Parish Council to create a 12 month calendar that

includes regular reoccurring events as well as Commission and Committee meetings, deadlines, due dates, etc. to be used

solely by the Parish Council. Bill Gruman discussed possible options with a Google Calendar. Fr. Hodges indicated that

Jay will continue to keep the master church calendar.

Pastoral Council Member Blessing – Will be scheduled for a 9:00 am Mass some weekend in the future.

4. Finance Council report – Fr. Hodges reported that the Council met on August 15. Craig Arendt, our investment

representative from Lincoln Savings Bank, discussed investment strategies. Council hopes to adopt and solidify a strat-

egy in September. Finance Council was informed that our Annual Diocesan Appeal goal for the new campaign set to

begin the end of September 2018 is $44,441. Our parish is still $365 shy of reaching our 2017 goal. Fr. Hodges has

planned for a second collection on September 1/2 and the proceeds will go toward this pending obligation. Any monies

not collected or pledges not fulfilled must be paid from our general fund. Finance Council also reviewed parish insur-

ance information provided by the Diocese that included building values, worker’s compensation and premium costs.

Next Finance Council meeting scheduled for September 20.

5. Commission Chair Reports and Committee Updates

Worship & Spirituality: Met on August 9. A Blue Mass (honoring First Responders) will be offered on September 23

at the 11:00 am Mass, followed by a light lunch prepared by the Knights of Columbus. Two rosary making workshops

have been held; at least one more will be scheduled. The current condition of our Altar Server albs was discussed. Me-

morial money is available if replacement is needed. St. Mary’s will participate in an ecumenical choir festival scheduled

for the 1st Sunday of Advent at Herrick Chapel. Next meeting September 13.

Faith Formation: Fr. Hodges reported that catechist training is scheduled for August 29, with Les and Linda Ollinger

preparing a meal. Catechists are still needed. The bible study/book reading programs are thriving and expanding under

the direction of several capable individuals. There has been discussion about development of a Grief Group, but such a

group would need to be cohesive with Catholic teachings.

Parish Life: Charles Willenbring advised that the Commission members have met with the College Outreach Commit-

tee and there will be a table set up in the lower gathering space to register college students.

Social Action: Met on August 13. Crop Walk is scheduled for October 7; more details forthcoming. Commission dis-

cussed their Time and Talent Survey. Discussed activities for Respect Life Month (October).

Building & Grounds: No report as they are not meeting until week of August 20.

Stewardship: No report

Technology: Bill Gruman advised that he will be present at the catechist training to share what new technological capa-

bilities will be available to the catechists this coming year.

6. Knights of Columbus – John Gorman reported that the Knights will be sponsoring and assisting with a local Soccer

Shootout on August 25 from 10:00 am to noon. The Knights will be assisting a widow of a deceased Knight on August

21 with moving. Knights of Columbus insurance agent wishes to sponsor a steak night on October 27 for persons inter-

ested in purchasing insurance. Local Knights would grill the steaks supplied by the agent. Knights of Columbus will be

providing Wednesday Night Meals prior to faith formation classes this coming year.

7. Pastor’s Report – Fr. Hodges reminded all Commission/Committee chairs to keep a binder with minutes, ideas, pro-

jects to pass on when/if the chair of the Commission/Committee changes. If the committee ceases to exist for some rea-

son, the binder should be given to Jay to keep. In the event the committee is resurrected, the past binder can be passed

along.

8. Next Parish Council Meeting – September 20 at 6:30 pm; Opening Prayer: Scott Wilson, Closing Prayer: Dennis

Crawford.

9. Adjourn – meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm with prayer by Sharon Mealey.

Submitted by: Patsy Probasco, acting Parish Council Secretary
