1. Outside-Mount Below Drop CeilingChallenge: In this installation, the window does not goall the way to the ceiling. As a result, the pocket mustbe mounted in the room and not recessed into the ceil-ing. This is often more of a commercial solution than aresidential one.

Solution: This is the least expensive of all the solutionsbecause it does not require any modification of the ceil-ing or walls. The pre-fabricated pocket mounts right tothe drywall above the window opening. This creates arecess above the pocket but this can be easily disguisedwith a decorative top treatment or fascia. Shade sys-tems with wide spans, such as 6 or more feet, mayrequire extra blocking for support. The pocket can bemounted right to the studs behind the drywall.

2. Outside-Mount, Custom Pocket and ValanceChallenge: This system needs to mount to the outsidewall above the window, however, unlike in example 1,front and bottom access is required and the aluminumpocket must be completely concealed.

Solution: In order to allow for front and bottom access,a custom wrap-around valance is employed (providedby others). The panels can be hinged or pop-out.

Challenge: To mount a roller shade in a deep jamb of awindow and keep the whole system in the windowframe. The installation requires side channels for ablackout configuration.

Solution: Since the window jamb is deep enough tocontain the standard VIMCO pocket, this is a simplechallenge to solve. The pocket does cover some glassbut this is usually not a concern, most decorative toptreatments often cover some glass.

The channels are able to be installed extremely close tothe glass. This is ideal for maximum reflection of heatand UV rays by the fabric. The pocket is mounted to thetop of the window frame to studs above the drywall.

4. Pocket Mount with Drywall Ceiling/Wood FrameChallenge: Within residential wood frame construction,this installation requires a recessed pocket and virtuallyno presence of the product in the room. The glass can-not be blocked and side channels are required.

Solution: This solution shows the best of all the fea-tures of the pre-fabricated pocket. It is flush mountedwith a drywall ceiling, allowing access via the bottompop-out panel. The side channels are as close the glassas possible without cutting into the window jambs.

This solution works most effectively when introducedearly in the design process. This way, the pocket can beplanned for when the drywall is installed. There is plentyof stud support for the pocket to be mounted to in thewindow header.

Challenge: Install the system directly above the windowcasing with minimal presence in the room.

Solution: This is a great solution for new construction,especially residential wood-frame. The minimal add-onexpense of a custom pocket and removable head-trimare balanced against a smooth, totally concealed instal-lation that still provides easy access for cleaning andmaintenance. It would be best to introduce this designearly in the planning stages since some modifications ofthe header and joists are required.

The motor and roller are still safe from moisture as thevapor barrier is left intact. As a result, there is no heatloss through the exterior wall. The custom head-trimcan be designed to compliment the room’s decor.

6. Pocket Mount – Drop Ceiling/Metal FrameChallenge: A pocket mounted system is required, flushwith the drop ceiling. In this case, the drop is lower thanin example 3.

Solution: In this installation, the pocket is mounted rightto the studs of the exterior wall. Again, the aluminumpocket makes retrofit simpler by offering standard sizeand mounting. The system is still totally hidden in apocket with the fabric dropping through a flap that isflush with the ceiling.

7. Dual-Mount/Vertical Stack/Recessed in Drywall CeilingChallenge: This installation requires two separate fab-rics over one window. There is not much depth availablefor the pocket but there is a lot of height. As is typical incommercial applications, the window is recessed in adeep jamb.

Solution: Roller shades can be dual-mounted in a verti-cal configuration. The motor closest to the glass usuallyoffers blackout fabric and side channels. The motor fur-ther form the glass usually offers sheershade™ fabric.Channels are optional for that application.

The access panel is a flap and hanger.

Some blocking is required to mount the side channels.This jamb detail shows how closely the fabrics hang toeach other.

9. Inside-Mount – Floating Ceiling/Metal FrameChallenge: A common application is modern offices andhomes is a decorative floating ceiling. In this applica-tion, roller shades are being used to shade a glass wallbetween rooms, probably conference spaces or offices.

Solution: Because the floating ceiling hangs below thedrywall, the pre-fabricated pocket can be mounted righton the wall and still be relatively well concealed. Somereinforcement is required for mounting in this example.Optional channels can provide blackout for either room.This is an economical retrofit solution. In some decors, apocket may not even be necessary. The roller systemcan be exposed for a more industrial feel.

10. Corner Mount Above Drop CeilingChallenge: Windows requiring shades are mounted in acorner. There is only a corner mullion between them.The installation requires the roller shade fabrics to hangas close as possible to each other.

Solution: Here, roller shades are mounted perpendicu-larly over the windows. It is a similar approach to exam-ple 6 where the dual-mount shades were stacked. Also,the entire assembly is mounted above a drop ceiling soas to provide the necessary height and conceal the sys-tems.

This solution is most effective when planned into theconstruction early on since it requires height and roomin the structure. Upper limits for both motors can be setso the shades drop in unison and move synchronously.

Challenge: Side-by-side blackout shades where thefabrics meet at a window mullion.

Solution: By mounting the side channels back-to-back,roller shades can offer a complete light-seal on win-dows that are side-by-side. An outside mount is shownhere. For wider mullions, side channels are available in3.5” (8.89cm) widths as well, resulting in a center chan-nel of 7.125” (8.09cm).
