curled and ejected in such a way eliminate the common problem of ‘long stringy’ swarf that is normally associated with drilling stainless steel. Often the swarf produced from a conventional HSS drill tends to wrap itself around the drill, which can cause tool breakage or requires operators to stop the machine and remove the swarf, resulting in poor productivity. Besides the R40-VA drill being used in stainless steel, it can also be used in soft materials such as aluminium, coppers and mild steels.Similarly when tapping 300 and 400 series stainless steels several problems can exist, firstly the material tends to work harden in the tapping process if too much heat is generated. Adequate cutting oil at the cutting action is essential to lubricate, minimise heat and frictional drag, thereby eliminating cold welding. When tapping stainless steel the cutting speed needs to be considered in relation to hole depth, if exceeding 1.5 diameters the speed should be reduced to generate less heat and allow more lubricant down the hole avoiding any dry cutting. Secondly the long chips produced when tapping stainless steels can wrap around the tool,

effecting productivity as the operator has to stop the operation to remove the swarf and prevent premature tap breakage.Another problem when tapping blind holes is the toughness of the chips, these chips must be cut within one revolution on reversal. The tap is required to break all the chips on blind holes; therefore the tap needs to be physically strong enough to cope with the high torque from this chip breaking action.This is where the benefits of a VA tap really start to show. A 50-degree helix on the spiral flute tap offers faster chip transportation allowing higher speeds for holes up to 1.5 x diameters. The speeds can also be increased in other long chipping materials for holes up to 3 x diameters. VA Taps are made from PM-HSS, a powder metallurgy grade of high-speed steel which presents a finer grain structure that HSS-E, therefore is less prone to chipping and has excellent wear resistance. TiCN coating has excellent resistance against cold welding, which commonly leads to tap failure in stainless steel. The 3 pitch lead-in lightens the chip load over a standard spiral tap, this eases up the stress on the tap when breaking the chip on reversal at full depth. Also the flute design of the tap incorporates positive

rake on the heel, which produces more of a cutting action on reversal.

The drilling and tapping of Stainless Steel can be difficult due to its toughness and high work hardening properties. The options for drilling and tapping of Stainless Steel can be expensive ones. Solid Carbide tooling including internal-coolant drills is not always cost effective on small batch sizes, or less than perfect machines. As specialists in providing expert advice to engineers we are often asked how to solve this problem with Stainless Steel.One answer is VA series drills and taps that have been specifically designed to solve these problems. VA is a European designation for stainless steel applications; The VA Drill and Tap design has very specific geometry for drilling and tapping 300 and 400 series stainless steel.The long-chipping characteristic of stainless steel requires higher reliefs than that of conventional HSS drills. Conventional HSS Drills are designed for general purpose type applications and suit a wide range of materials. However the unique R40-VA geometry with TiALN coating enables the drill to cut with less friction, generating less heat and minimises the work hardening of the stainless steel, thereby prolonging the tool life. The lower forces generated when drilling, results in superior drill life and hole condition, which is especially critical when the hole is to be tapped. If the hole is work hardened whilst drilling or countersinking, this puts added stress on machine taps and will cause premature life or breakage. The R40-VA drill combines a quicker 40 degree flute helix, smaller chisel edge and wider flute design, which improves productivity dramatically. Chips that are
