PIAB Reminders:
Principles for Effective
Verbal Intervention
Practice and use safe, respectful, non-invasive, and
effective milieu management strategies that have been
proven to work. Manage disruptive and assaultive
behavior with confidence and prevent escalation into
crisis. Start today by following these principles for
effective verbal intervention.
Remain Calm. Remember, the verbally escalating person is beginning
to lose control. If the person you are intervening with
senses you are losing control, the situation will
escalate. Try to keep your cool, even when challenged,
insulted, or threatened.
Isolate the Individual. Onlookers, especially those who are the peers of the verbally escalating person, tend to fuel the fire. They often become cheerleaders, encouraging the individual. Isolate the person you are verbally intervening with. You will be more effective one-on-one.
Keep It Simple. Be clear and direct in your message. Avoid jargon and complex options.
Watch Your Body Language. Be aware of your space, posture, and gestures. Make sure your nonverbal behavior is consistent with your verbal message.
Use Silence. Ironically, silence is one of the most effective verbal intervention techniques. Silence on your part allows the individual to clarify and restate. This often leads to a clearer understanding of the true source of the individual’s conflict.
Use Reflective Questioning. Paraphrase and restate comments. By repeating or reflecting the person’s statement in the form of a question, you’ll help the individual gain valuable insight.
Watch Your Paraverbals. Any two identical statements can have completely opposite meanings, depending on how the tone, volume, and cadence of your voice are altered. Make sure the words you use are consistent with voice inflection to avoid a double message.
*Never forget that you work in a psychiatric facility. Always be on guard and whenever possible verbally defuse a potential violent situation before it has a chance to escalate.

Study: One-Third of U.S. Workers Aren't Getting Enough Sleep By The Huffington Post Despite the recommendation that adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night, a new study shows that about a third of us aren't hitting those goals.
Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at data from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey on sleep habits of U.S. workers. They found that 30 percent of people in the study -- which calculates to about 40.6 million workers in the U.S. -- get fewer than six hours of sleep a night. Their research was published in this week's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
The study of 15,214 people also shed light on what kinds of jobs are linked with less sleep. The researchers found that people who work in manufacturing get less sleep than other workers, with 34.1 percent of them reporting getting less than six hours of sleep a night.
In addition, people who work the night shift were more likely to report getting inadequate sleep (44 percent), compared with those working during the day (28.8 percent).
Among people who worked the night shift, certain industries had high prevalences of inadequate sleep,
including 69.7 percent of warehouse and transportation workers and 52.3 percent of health-care and social assistance workers, according to the report.
The researchers also found that people between ages 30 and 64 were more likely to report not getting enough sleep, compared with workers between ages 18 and 29 and workers age 65 and older.
People who work more than one job are also more likely to not get enough sleep during the night, compared with people who just have one job -- 37 percent versus 29.4 percent. People who work more than 40 hours a week are also less likely to get enough sleep per night, compared with those who work a 40-or-under week.
Sleep deprivation is dangerous because it raises the risk of a whole host of health problems. Studies have linked inadequate rest with depression, a decreased immune system and memory issues, WebMD reported. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to obesity, high blood pressure and daytime fatigue, which could present safety issues on the job, Harvard Medical School reported.
NOTE: Conrad Frederick posed for this picture and is not sleeping on the job.

SSSaaafffeeetttyyy FFFaaaiiirrr We go from the fun and frivolity of Nurses Week to the seriousness of IntraCare North’s annual Safety Fair. This
year’s event was held on May 17 starting at 8 am. Thank you to everyone who attended. It’s a Joint Commission
requirement that employees receive annual training in HIPAA, Patient Rights, Fire & Safety, Cultural Diversity and
several other areas. A special thank you goes to Human Resources Coordinator Irene Moore for her tremendous
efforts organizing and facilitating the affair. Remember that CPR and PIAB are not included in the Fair and are
scheduled separately. All employees are required to have current certification in both.

Resources Available
“Library on Wheels” is accessible for patients to
check out books and other reading materials. Staff
are welcome to check out books as well.
Donations of books, magazines (without staples),
and other reading materials that are appropriate for
persons 9 years and older are needed. Please refrain
from magazines deemed age and/or psych hospital
inappropriate. (Thank you to several employees who
have recently made donations.)
We are in need of Bibles to give to patients, as the
limited supply we had was exhausted very quickly.
When in stock, if a patient asks for a Bible inform
either Patient Liaison in order that one may be
delivered to them. Additionally, journals can be
gotten for patients who ask for them.
We have a limited amount of activities such as
playing cards, crayons, word searches, and coloring
sheets.
Patient Handbooks have been updated recently and
are available. Handbook review makes a good topic
for group discussion. The new handbooks have
illustrations and do not have staples.
If you have an idea or suggestion that will improve
our customer service, let us know.

“““QQQuuu oootttaaabbbllleee QQQuuuooottteeesss”””
Roderis White, pictured below and one of our newest employees, inspires us with
these quotable quotes, several of which he wrote himself.
By Roderis White
A friend should be one in whose understanding and
virtue we can equally confide, and whose opinion we
can value at once for its justness and its sincerity.
-Roderis White
Friendship... is not something you learn in school. But if
you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you
really haven't learned anything.
-Muhammad Ali
Change does not roll in on
the wheels of inevitability,
but comes through
continuous struggle. And
so we must straighten our
backs and work for our
freedom. A man can't ride
you unless your back is
bent.
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Your work is going to fill a
large part of your life, and
the only way to be truly
satisfied is to do what you
believe is great work. And
the only way to do great
work is to love what you
do. If you haven't found it
yet, keep looking. Don't
settle. As with all matters
of the heart, you'll know
when you find it.
-Roderis White
If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've
had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles
don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn
around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go
through it, or work around it.
-Michael Jordan
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears,
the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her
hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes,
because that is the doorway to her heart, the place
where love resides. True beauty in a woman is
reflected in her soul. It’s the
caring that she lovingly
gives, the passion that she
shows & the beauty of a
woman only grows with
passing years."
— Roderis White
At each of these northern
posts there were interesting
experiences in store for me,
as one who had read all the
books of northern travel and
dreamed for half a lifetime
of the north; and that was -
almost daily meeting with
famous men.
-Ernest Thompson Seton
Ask yourself: Have you been
kind today? Make kindness
your daily modus operandi
and change your world.
