Pennsylvania‟s only association dedicated exclusively to the interests of Assisted Living Residences and Personal Care Homes welcomes you to our Spring 2011 Conference & Expo!

All of us, as fellow providers who volunteer our time to organize this event, sincerely hope that you will find this Conference helpful to you in your everyday practice of serving your residents and families.

PALA‟s theme, “Back to the Future”, intends to capture how all of us need to define and embrace "our FUTURE" that is filled with innovations and strategies to service and care. As importantly, however, we also need to practice a "BACK to the basics" approach of serving our residents in a way that fosters their independence, protects their privacy, enhances their dignity, and promotes their right of choice as to how they lead their lives.

We bring you sessions that will educate you on many of the current key topics and issues, in addition to quality sessions that will deliver competency skills for the owner, administrator, nurse, and other managers in your work place.

We also invite you to visit more than 40 businesses who will be exhibiting at our Conference, highlighting a range of professional services and products that you can use to strengthen your service to the older adults and others that consider you "home".

And, with a new Administration now guiding public policy in the Commonwealth, we look forward to hearing about the future direction for all of us.

Finally, it's always valuable to us to spend time with all of you discussing how we advance both our service to seniors and our individual business success.

We look forward to seeing you at PALA‟s Spring Conference!

Sincerely,

Your PALA Board of Directors

Listening and Responding to the Resident’s Unmet Need Often caregivers stop or hesitate to communicate because they feel inadequate in their ability to communicate with individuals who have memory loss. As a result we often do not adequately meet their basic human needs to be listened to, to have meaning and purpose, or to feel loved and secure. During this session participants will also practice some verbal and nonverbal Validation techniques which will enable them to better listen, communicate and connect with persons with memory loss. —Rita Altman, National Memory Care Director, Sunrise Senior Living

Learn how to reduce your readmission rate and the number of complications post discharge by implementing pro-active measures that will increase care levels, reduce facility expenses, be measurable (bottom line), and un-measurable (soft). —John “Jack” Manzella DO, MBA, Medical Director, Community Resources Nurse Practitioners —Joseph “Joe” Eckstein NP, Clinical Director, Community Resources Nurse Practitioners —Aaron Musselman, MBA, President, Community Resources Nurse Practitioners

Do you have to work with them or supervise them? Every workplace has its own collection of difficult people, and your job as a supervisor or team leader is to handle them! It‟s not an easy assignment—there aren‟t any clear-cut rules or guidelines. This program takes you through every stage of the discipline process, from recognizing the problem and assessing its severity … to intervention strategies … to formal termination procedures. You‟ll also learn the communication skills that are critical to maintaining an open dialogue with a problem worker.
