balconydecking

Live the high life in style and safetyWho doesn’t like the idea of being able to walk out onto a balconydeck first thing in the morning, or even sit out watching the sun godown while mulling over the day’s events.

Timeless Timber Decking provides the perfect setting to watch lifefloat by.

The design capabilities of timber decking mean that you can live thehigh life in both comfort and safety.

Raised decks can add character and value to a property, and onsloping land, raised decks are a practical solution to providing externalliving space where a traditional patio or garden is not possible.

www.timeless-timber.co.uk

A timber deck is classed as being ‘raised’ when the deck platform isover 600mm high, and Building Regulations require a handrail heightof 1100mm.

The Axxys Hi Level Decking Range from Timeless Timber meetsguidelines set by the NHBC and the TDA’s ‘DECKMARK PLUS’scheme for raised decks. It has also been strength tested by Trada.

NHBC TURNS TO DECKING GUIDANCEThe National House-Building Council (NHBC) requires all raised decksbuilt on new houses in the UK to comply with TDA quality guidelines. The guidelines act as a further recommendation for the ‘Best Practice’on materials, designs, and installation techniques which the TimberDecking Association and Timeless Timber promote.(source Code of Practice TDA/RD 0801: Raised Timber Decks on New Homes)

joists andposts

Strength and endurance where itmatters mostNo matter how amazing your plans for decking may look, whatreally matters is how it’s put together. Critically underpinning anyproject are the joists and posts that support the decking. Withoutreliable foundations, your decking won’t last nearly as long as itshould do.

Timeless Timber joists and posts are high pressure preservativetreated, to protect against rot and decay. The result is joists andposts specifically treated for in-ground contact. Let’s face it,when it comes to this stage of your project it’s simply not worthcompromising on quality.

www.timeless-timber.co.uk

The joists are made from quality European Redwood, that has beenkiln dried and strength graded. Their increased strength, greaterdimensional stability, and lighter weight makes them easier to handle.

Deckmark joists are sized at 47mm x 150mm, and come in variouslengths to accommodate any project.

Timeless Timber joists and posts quite literally the natural choice fora more professional job.

Depending upon the final shape of your deckand the final pattern of deckboards you wantto create, the frame of your deck will need tobe carefully planned so that the interior joistswill support the deckboard design. Variousdeck design options are shown here and youwill see that double joists may be required toaccommodate some deckboard patterns. Also note the use of noggins between theinterior joists that will strengthen the wholeframe structure. Noggins can be made withshort off cuts of the joist material.

The design capabilitiesof timber decking meanthat you can live thehigh life in both styleand safety.Raised decks can add character andvalue to a property, and on slopingland, raised decks are a practicalsolution to providing external livingspace where a traditional patio orgarden is not possible.

A timber deck is classed as being‘raised’ when the deck platform is over600mm high, and the Axxys Hi LevelDecking Range from Timeless Timbermeets guidelines set by the NHBC andthe Timber Decking Association forraised decks.

The diagram below details the generalarrangement required for raised decks.A full code of practise for raised decksis available to download fromwww.timeless-timber.co.uk

Check the depth and position of anyunderground pipes, cables or servicesunder the proposed deck and allowaccess to any manhole covers orinspection chambers.

Consider the size and use of the deck.If it is to be used for dining, there needsto be plenty of room for tables and chairs.

Timeless Timber Decking products aredesigned to be used on decks up to600mm high. An elevated deck needs tobe designed so that it is capable of takingthe expected loading. If in doubt, seekprofessional advice.

Timber decks differ from conventionalpatios and terraces most significantlyin their elevation and general height ofconstruction.

For all but the simplest, low-level gardendeck, property owners should satisfythemselves that planning regulations donot apply to their proposed structure.

In addition to contacting the LocalAuthority, we strongly recommend thatyou talk to all your neighbours about yourplans. Neighbour objections are the mostusual reason for planning refusal orenforcement notices after completion.

Local Authorities can insist that structuresare dismantled and removed whereconsent should have been obtained, but was not.

Situations Requiring PlanningPermission

- Where the deck is situated within 20metres of a highway.

- Where the deck platform is more than300mm (1ft) from the ground (effective1 October 2008).

- If the structure would affect the amenityvalue or privacy of neighbouringproperties.

- If the deck is attached to a listed buildingor situated in a conservation area orNational Park.

how to build yourtimeless timber deckan easy step by step guide

Stage1 Before you get started

Check there are no drainage problemsin the area where you plan to build yourdeck. The deck design must maximiseairflow through and around theconstruction to ensure good ventilation.

Mark out the site accurately and ensure itis square following the diagram below.

Decks can be free standing or attachedto the side of a house. When attached toa house the finished deck level must beat least two brick courses below thedamp proof course. If this is not practical,a gap must be left between the house andthe deck to aid drainage. A ledger boardis bolted to the wall and used to carry andsupport the joists.

This can be done by using a 47 x 150mmTimeless Timber joist. The ledger boardmust be 10mm from the wall to ensuresufficient drainage.

Do not lay ground level decks directlyonto grass. Remove all turf and coverthe ground with permeable membrane orpolythene (with holes pierced) and thengravel to prevent any weeds growing.Lay the framing on concrete paving slabsbedded into position or on an existinglevel concrete area.

For elevated decks 100 x 100 TimelessTimber structural posts should be used, positioned no more than 1800mm apart. At least half the length of the post shouldbe sunk into the ground and fixed withconcrete.

Beams are attached to the posts usingTimeless 150mm landscape screws andthe joist frame is fixed to the beams byskew nailing or screwing.

The frame is constructed from Timeless47 x 150mm joist timbers

Joists should be fixed at 400mm centresfor maximum support, using Timeless100mm landscape screws, galvanisednails or joist hangers.

Noggins (offcuts of joist) are used toprevent the joists from twisting orbuckling. These are attached at 90°to the joist in a staggered manner at1200mm centres.

In order to attach the fillet to the handrailsecurely, you should fix it every 3rd or 4thspindle with Timeless 40mm screws.

You should now have a complete panelof posts, rails and balustrading that canbe attached to the joist framework usingTimeless 100mm landscape screws.Ideally, fix the newels so that two facesof the post can be secured through twojoists at 90°.

Timeless Chamfered RangeTimeless Chamfered Spindles (a), TimelessPatrice Newel (b), Timeless Rail (c) andTimeless Deck Rail Bolt (not shown).

Determine the height of the Timeless Railin relation to the Timeless Patrice Newel.

To make this job easier, use a smallportion of rail and mark out the profileonto the newel post using a pencil.

To determine the finished deckboard level, measure 900mm from the top of thestencilled higher handrail, and mark a lineon all four faces of the post.

In order to mark the position on thebottom rail, measure up 75mm from thedeckboard level. Again, a small piece ofrail should be utilised to mark out theprofile onto the newel post.

All other Timeless Patrice Newels and railsshould be marked in the same way.

You now need to prepare the newel for theTimeless Deck Rail Bolt. Place the metalangle bracket of the deck rail bolt againstthe template of the rail you have drawn.Mark with a pencil. This is where the boltwill be drilled.

Using a 22mm flat bit, drill the postto a depth of 10mm.

Using a 10mm drill bit, drill down thecentre of the 22mm hole to a total depthof 30mm. Using an 8mm hexagonal key, screw the metal insert into the 10mm hole.Bolt the metal angle bracket to the insertwith the bolt provided ensuring thecountersink side is lowermost for thehandrail and uppermost for the base rail.

Mark and drill all remaining TimelessPatrice Newels in exactly the same wayand fix inserts into position.

The Timeless Chamfered Spindlescan now be cut to length and attachedto the Timeless Rail using Timeless40mm screws

Balusters should be spaced atapproximately 125mm centres givinga maximum gap between spindlesof 100mm.

You should now have a complete panelof posts, rails and balustrading that canbe attached to the joist framework usingTimeless 100mm landscape screws.Ideally, fix the newels so that two facesof the post can be secured through twojoists at 90°.

Timeless Roman RangeTimeless Roman Column (a),Timeless Roman Newel (b) and TimelessRoman Rail (c).

Determine the height of the TimelessRoman Rail in relation to the TimelessRoman Newel post.

To make this job easier, use a smallportion of rail and mark out the profileonto the newel post usinga pencil.

Three rails are used when building theTimeless Roman Column Range. The firstas a bottom rail, the second as a top rail, and the third is used to conceal screwheads. When marking out the rail profileonto the newel post, stencil two rails ontop of each other.

Points to rememberConsult a structural engineer or builder forhigh level decks over 600mm.The AxxysHi-Level Deck Range has been specificallydesigned for elevated decks of 600mmand more. It has been independentlytested by TRADA and the TDA.

The maximum recommended lengthof rails between posts is 2400mm.

The space between spindles must notallow a 100mm ball to pass through.

Newel posts can be fixed to either theinside or outside of the frame. When fittingto the inside, use Timeless 100mmlandscape screws and ensure that twofaces of the post can be secured throughtwo joists at 90° if possible.

Posts that are fixed to the side of the deckshould be half lapped or rebated when ona corner.

Place the bottom rail in position and fixwith screws provided.

It’s now time to insert the Timeless MetalSpindles. The Timeless Metal L Rail is pre-drilled to ease installation. Before placingthe spindles into the rail it is recommendedthat you squeeze a small amount ofsilicone into the drill holes to secure thespindles position. Place the spindles intothe drill holes and silicone around theedge to prevent rainwater from gettinginto the drill holes. Wipe away excess.

Once all the spindles are in position thetop rail can be fixed.

Stage4 Deckboard installation

Deckboard InstallationBoards can be fixed with Timeless 75mmceramic galvanised screws.

It will often be necessary to join boardsalong their length. This must always bedone over a joist. Use additional sectionsof joist to increase the area for fixing.

Screw heads should always becountersunk below the surface of the deckto avoid injury to feet. Check these onceor twice a season.

Always treat cut ends and drill holes witha suitable end seal preservative.

Timeless ScrewsTimeless 75mm screws allow you to takeup a board if necessary, without causingdamage.

Deckboards should be pre-drilled beforescrewing to avoid splitting.

Deckboards should be fixed along theirlength to every supporting joist using 2fixings per joist.

Make sure you leave at least 25mm fromthe ends and edges of the boards wheninstalling the fixings.

Leave a 6 – 9mm gap between each boardwhen installing as it is natural for thedeckboards to swell when wet and shrinkwhen dry.

how to build yourtimeless timber deck

Ensure that you measure the height andspace in front of your deck as this willinfluence the quantity of steps and risersyou will need.

In order to attach your stair stringssecurely position them at right angles tothe deck, and at centres of no more than400mm.

Galvanised brackets or joist hangers canbe used to fix the steps to the joists.

Make use of deckboard off cuts by usingthem as step treads, with an overhang of30mm on each step.

The step treads are fixed to the strings byusing Timeless 75mm screws.

Stage5 Three and five step installation

All fixings should be checked andtightened where necessary.

Decks should be cleaned on a regularbasis, either by simply brushing the deckusing a long bristled brush and ensuringthat the gaps between components arealso cleaned, or by using a power washerfor a more thorough cleaning. NB, Powerwashing should not be carried out until all

joints and connections have beenchecked and tightened. Avoid excessivepressure and keep water volumes toa minimum.

Specialist deck cleaning solutionsare available and can be useful on heavilystained or weathered decks but shouldnot be necessary if the deck has beenmaintained regularly.

If the underside of the deck isaccessible, remove any debris and checkthe position and integrity of weed controlarrangements.

Your deck will benefit from an annualtreatment of water repellent to protect it.

Colour stains can be applied to your deck.A suitable exterior, solvent based productshould be used.
