Tick, Tick, Boom!By: Joseph J. Mervis & Thomas Williams

Finally, the crime scene tape was taken down. The coroner zipped up the black body-bag and headed toward his car. The Bailey’s were frozen in fear. They were still trying to comprehend the horror that occurred. The coroner set the bag in the large, grey truck. “The blood will come out of the carpet,” he yelled as he hopped into his SUV. The family didn’t respond. They couldn’t respond. None of them had moved for hours. A slideshow of the night was looping inside their minds. Detective Wright sat in the chair, staring at the pool of blood on the living room floor. Just then, the phone rang. Mrs. Bailey came out of the trance and picked up the receiver in the kitchen. “Hello?” No answer. Detective Wright, getting suspicious, picked up the phone. “Hello?” “I see you found my present…” She froze. The receiver dropped from her shaking hand. The voice on the other end laughed. “You’re welcome.”

Chapter 1Detective Ann Wright, Homicide read the plate sitting askew on her

desk. Papers were scattered all across it. The only other items on the desk were a laptop and a single photo of the detective and a man with the same likeness. Detective Wright was serious about her job and spent many hours working overtime. She had a distinct line between her professional life and her personal life, (if you could even call it that). Empty boxes were stacked next to the desk. The detective had recently joined the IMPD after moving from New York City.
