The Haselbury Plucknett Charities
Registered Charity No 201573
Who we are
The Haselbury Charities have a small fund with a very small annual income. They are an
amalgamation of three old charities, the Mary Ann Woods, the Henry Parsons and the
Mary Mountford Charities. These were founded to support the poor, the elderly and the
sick of the parish, and to help fund education or tools for work for young people. With low
interest rates, we now have only a small amount to give out each year. We still aim to give
grants where the need is greatest and we will consider all applications. For example, if you
are struggling to pay heating bills or travel costs for hospital appointments, you may wish
to apply for a small subsidy. Applicants can contact the Correspondent to the Trustees in
strict confidence at Haselbury Plucknett Charities, c/o Stonehayes, Haselbury Plucknett,
TA18 7PH or on 01460 73141.
How you can help
Count your blessings and consider villagers less fortunate than yourself. There may be
people in the village who are able to, and would be pleased to support the Charities finan-
cially. This could be done either by way of a bequest included in a will or by a monetary
gift as a “thank you” to the village in the knowledge that only genuine deserving cases
would benefit from such a generous gesture. Contact the Trustees via the Correspondent,
details as above.
Invitations to apply for grants will continue to be published in the Parish News.

Hope says writer Rebecca Solnit is not like a lottery ticket you can sit on
the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky...hope is an axe you break down doors
with in an emergency. Hope just means another world might be possible,
not promised, not guaranteed. When we face the enormous challenges that
we do, both abroad, here at home and in the struggles of our own lives, it
is hope born in our imaginations and hearts that will sustain and nourish
our faith in different possibilities for people to live together without fear
or hatred. To live life in all its fullness, said Jesus. For Christians the source of such
hope remains the extraordinary events that make up the season of Easter, where an
apparently hopeless situation was transformed in the imaginations, hearts and lives of
those who thought all was lost by the unexpected encounter with the One who they
thought had gone forever and whose dream had gone with Him, nailed to a cross by the
Empire of the day.
The unexpected and barely understood event that we call the resurrection, rekindled
hope that had been seemingly buried in the tomb of Gethsemane. And ever since, men
and women through the ages have discovered the transforming power of that hope in
their lives; sometimes revealed through gestures of service and help; other times through
brave refusals to remain locked in tombs of despair and helplessness. Sometimes
through small apparently insignificant actions, other times in joining together with
others in finding new ways of living. In the face of impossible situations, hope makes
the present bearable and the future possible and full
of surprises.
At Easter a new power was released in the world, inviting
us to reimagine ourselves and in so doing give birth to
new possibilities - as we step out in hope.
With every blessing for this season of Easter
Jonathan Morris

Christians who enjoy singing together. The group was formed about 20 years ago and
sings a wide variety of music. They have given many charity concerts, regularly sing at

Bournemouth Music Festival. Our concert on 16th April will feature a varied programme,
including Rutter’s “God be in my head”, a selection from Les Miserables and “A
nightingale sang in Berkeley Square” as well as the title song “All in the April evening”.

Wonderful willow! One of the most interesting crops that excel in Somerset is the Willow, and for some 200 years people have been growing and harvesting willow here. It is a really versatile material and its many uses include basket and other container making, reinforcing the banks of waterways, water filtration, and of course it is famous for cricket bats! Some growers also make charcoal for artists or barbecues from their willow and some farmers are now growing willow as a source of biomass. Other people find it easier to weave than hazel for hurdle making, but be aware that it will not last as long once it dries out. Many gardeners use willow to create arches and more creative structures in their gardens –it is helpful for draining damp pastures or gardens but has an amazing root system so do keep it well way from underground drains and houses! Of course willow is an indigenous plant and, being sappy, supports much insect and bird life. There are over 400 species and many coloured stemmed hybrids which can be very attractive. Historically, it was a source of aspirin – a wonderful medicine still. More recently with the rise in popularity of woodland burials and people wanting more choice in their funeral arrangements, the use of willow coffins, which can be very beautiful, and are of course completely bio-degradable – has become very popular. How lovely to use a local product, providing employment and improving the environment, even after your death! For more information about willow do visit the Willow and Wetlands centre, near Curry Rivel.I have used willow extensively as an easy garden divider or ‘fedge’ (a live fence/hedge – simply stick a cutting in the ground and where it’s damp it will shoot and establish within a single season). For me, in the season of Easter, willow is a living example of resurrection – a few sticks, a little water and new life flourishes! Isn’t that what we are looking for in our lives? I hope you are able to enjoy the works of the hand of God in our natural environment this April. Every Blessing, Annie Gurner, Rural Life Advisor [email protected]

Christian Aid Week 2016 – 15-21 May This year, Christian Aid is highlighting its relief work in Bangladesh where regular floods make for extremely precarious living conditions. Morsheda is a young mother of four living on a low-lying island in the Brahmaputra River. She lives in constant fear. ‘I feel very scared of the river. When I look at it I keep thinking: “it is coming”, Morsheda says. Her single-room, corrugated-iron hut has been flooded four times. One year, her humble house filled up to her knees with floodwater. To stay dry, and keep away from the dangerous snakes that swam through her home she raised her bed up on bricks. But during the night she was woken by a loud splash. In the pitch black, her baby son had fallen into the inky water. He could have drowned in moments. In a bad year, huge waves crashed against her house, giving her less than an hour to uproot her home and scramble to safety. Racing against time, she gathered her terrified children together and hastily made a raft from a banana tree. At any moment, it could have tipped and plunged them into the swirling waters, but it was their only hope. She put her youngest daughter in a cooking pot and clung to it as it floated in the current. Morsheda and her children live a truly precarious life. They know that the floods will come again. But Christian Aid can lift people like Morsheda to safety. Just £250 is enough for a Christian Aid Home Safety Package. It could flood-proof Morsheda’s home, raising it eight foot on to an earth plinth. She would have a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow crops. It could also buy a goat, seeds and a wormery to help produce compost – all of which will give her a long-term income and a solid foundation for a new life. As in previous years, I hope that our collectors can help once more. If you can NOT take part in the house-to-house collection this year, please let me know. And if there are any new volunteers to lighten the load, I would be delighted to hear from you. Hilde Bucknell (76450)

Meeting held 15th. MARCH 2016 Speaker: Gerald Fisher Topic; Bees and the Gardener.
A beekeeper of over 40 years experience, Gerald treated us to a most
interesting illustrated talk on Bees. He gave a potted history of beekeeping
from caveman to modern day. In 1992 the Varroa mite was detected in
Devon and tragically by 1994 in the South West, 60% of Honey Bee
colonies had been wiped out. Today it is unlikely that there are any wild
Honey Bee colonies. At this moment mite infestation can be monitored and
controlled by chemical or physical means. But it is still a problem.
The humble Bumble bee is also under threat from all sides even mite
infestation. While most of these mites are harmless there are strains that
are harmful. We need to give Bumble bees (and Solitaries) a hand by
providing habitats.
Gardeners can help bees enormously by planting nectar secreting flowers
and shrubs, from aubretia, spring bulbs to late flowering Mahonia and Ivy.
An excellent talk much appreciated by Club members.
Show plant plugs, donated by Castle Gardens (The Garden group) were
distributed to interested club members to be nurtured and produced for
the August display day.
Next Time: Tuesday 12th April.

'THE LADY IN THE VAN': Maggie Smith plays Mary Shephard who took refuge for
15 years outside Alan Bennett’s house in a van as apparently music practising
elsewhere had become intolerable. Smith is magnificent as the fearsomely
opinionated interloper, however, as Bennett states: “one seldom was able to do
her a good turn without some thoughts of strangulation!” A rich comedy with a
star studded cast.

This term has been busy for everyone but particularly for the Year 4 children
who will leave us for new schools in July. They spent an enjoyable day of
pilgrimage at Wells Cathedral where they took part in craft activities, drama
and celebration. In the same week they went on a residential trip to Kilve
Court, which included many exciting activities such as grass sledging,
mountain biking, climbing and bush craft. On both occasions their excellent
behaviour was commented on.
Pancake Day was celebrated with traditional pancake races! Some children
were brilliant ‘flippers’ as they raced across the playground!
Mrs Bucknell enthralled the children of Hazel class with an informative and
entertaining talk about Wulfric as part of their local history work. They
thoroughly enjoyed trying on chain mail, listening to and playing the bowed
psalter - an instrument similar to that played by Wulfric. Our thanks go to
Mrs Bucknell for organising the very enjoyable talk.
Science Week was probably the busiest week of the term with forensic
science activities, a science-centred visit to Coombe Farm as well as a
Science Fair organised by Year 12 & 10 students from Wadham School. In
between a lot of parents and children have been giving talks to the classes
about science in their lives.
We also said good bye to Mrs White who has worked patiently as a Teaching
Assistant for over 12 years, supporting the children to achieve their best.
She will be missed by us all and we wish her well in all her new ventures.
There is lots of information about the school and new photographs of the
activities the children are involved in, on our website at
www.haselburyplucknettschool.co.uk. Please do browse through it.
