Torque Shear Tamper-Resistant Nuts (TSTR Nuts) are special designed multi-feature nuts that are non-removable on steel bolted joints once fastened properly onto mating bolts.

Benefa of using TSTR Nuts include:- (i) Pennanenr Bolted Jomrs - The fastening-ends of nuts will be selfdetached (sheared off) under specific tightening torques (Table 1). This feature eliminates I m e bolts problems, commonly found at steel erection works due to absence of effective tightening method on site. (ii) T w R e s i s t a n c e - Every properly fastened TSTR Nut is thefi-proof and permanently fastened onto bolted joints. It may be destroyed but can never be unfastened h m the mating bolt using common hand tools. (iii) Corrosion-Resistance - Suitable for used on outdoor steel structures, TSTR Nuts are Zinc galvanised to Class 50 corrosion resistance, with an average minimum Zinc coating thickness exceeding 45pm (or 325 glm). (iv)Cost eflcirmt - no additional theft-proof (lock) nut is required. Thus, eliminates the needs for extending standard bolts' lengths.

Standard Assembly of TSTR Nuts for Transmission Line Towers:- (i) The standard assembIy consists of: 1 pc. Hex Bolt, 1 pc. TSTR Nut & 1 pc.

. Spring Washer; flat round washer may be added, if so desired. (Figure 1) (ii) A properly W n e d TSTR nut assembly shows a washer-face nut with spring washer completely flatten against the bolted joints. (Figure 2)

Preset Shear Off Torques

The TSTRO Nuts are manufactured predominately for non-slip critical or shear bearing joints; such as the overhead transmission line towers, etc. The TSTR Nuts are compatible to be used with bolts of various strength properties, namely IS0 Grade 5.8 to Grade 8.8.. The standard preset fastening torques to shear-off are stated therein the following Table 1.

Transmission Towers - Shear Bearing Joints

The joints' strengths of the overhead transmission line towers depend entirely on the shear bearing strength of the bolts used. Therefore, when nuts of higher strength grade are used, e.g., Grade 8 Nut on Grade 5.8 bolts, the bolted joints do not experience any increase in strength characteristic. Of course, a reserve usage would be disastrous, i.e,, when lower grade nuts are used.

While bolts and nuts are not required to pre-tensioned to minimum torques that transform into predetermined bolts' axial clamping loads, the preset fmtening torques of TSTR Nuts achieved the following two critical objectives:-

(i) steel members a ~ e joined with minimum clamping loads. Thus, the towers are properly installed.

(ii) threads of bolts and nuts are properly lockzd which, in turn, prevents loose-bolt problem, or any unwarranted unfastening of bolts and nuts.
