8/13/2019 TSHA Annual Meeting 2014
3/721
This has been an eventful year in the life of the Texas State Historical Association, and now it is time for all of us to make plans to gather at the Wyndham San AntonioRiverwalk Hotel for our 118th Annual Meeting. Thanks to a major new initiative funded
by the Summerlee Foundation, TSHA membership is growing with each passing month.
The TSHA Press has published several important new books this year, and the new
Texas Almanac is hot off the press. Our innovative programs for teachers and students
at all levels continue to ensure that the next generation of Texans will appreciate our
states rich and unique history. The Southwestern Historical Quarterly remains the
scholarly journal-of-record for Texas history. The Handbook of Texas Online continues
to get bigger and better with the passage of time, and the latest Handbook spinoff, The
Handbook of African American Texas, has just been published. If that were not enough,
at the Annual Meeting we will be formally announcing what is surely the Associations
worst-kept secret: the commencement of the public phase of our $10 million
comprehensive fundraising campaign, A Future for Our Past. As this program goes to
press, we are pleased to announce that we are already well beyond the $4 million mark
on that campaign.
As president, and as an academic member of our Association, I often eld questions
from members concerned that our many public-outreach programs and the fundraising
efforts necessary to sustain them might dilute the scholarly core of our mission. A glance
at this years program should lay any such concerns to rest. Forty-four sessions will
explore virtually every topic and era of Texas history. Sessions on military, political,
religious, legal, labor, medical, environmental, business, sports, and Borderlands history
offer something for everyone. In keeping with the location for the meeting, no fewer
than fourteen sessions focus on Spanish, Mexican, or Tejano history. Twelve sessions
are devoted all or in part to womens historysurely a TSHA rst. African American
and Native American history are both the subjects of multiple sessions. And for the
traditionalists among us, there are sessions on the Texas Revolution and Republic, the
Mexican War, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the cattle industry, and LBJ. Joint sessions
with a number of partner organizations round out our program.
Special events begin at noon on Thursday, March 6, with the Women in Texas History
Luncheon, where Elizabeth Hayes Turner will speak on Lion in the Texas House: The
Political Performances of Senfronia Thompson, and the Liz Carpenter Award will
be presented. On Thursday evening, the Presidential Reception at the Witte Museum
will welcome incoming TSHA President John L. Nau III. On Friday at noon, the
Fellows Luncheon/Awards Banquet will feature noted legal scholar Michael A. Olivas
speaking on the topic, San Antonio and the Gulf Coast in the Post-WW II Latino Legal
Imagination: Notes from an Accidental Historian.
A highlight of this years meeting is a reception on Friday evening at the Alamo, hosted
by Texas General Land Ofce. Afterwards, we will stroll across Alamo Plaza to the
historic Menger Hotel for the Presidential Banquet where I will address the topic,
Lyndons Granddaddy: Sam Johnson, Texas Populism, and the Improbable Roots of
American Liberalism.
Welcome to the 118th Annual Meeting

6/724
Dear SHA Members and Friends,
Its November as I write. The days are shorter and colder; the semester is coming to aclose; and the holidays loom. Already I am looking forward to spring and especiallythe Associations Annual Meeting in San Antonio, where the Texas history faithful willgather during its high holy days. There is nothing like a TSHA Annual Meeting for seeing
old friends and for being energized and inspired by the latest work being done in theeld. I am expecting this meetingwith receptions at the Witte Museum and the Alamo, the Presidential Banquet being held in the ballroom of the historic Menger hotel, and the
conference headquarters on the beautiful Riverwalkto be one of the best ever.
The range and quality of the scholarship reected in this program is a testament to the
vitality of the study of Texas history and the commitment of our members. In order for
Texas history to remain a dynamic and active discipline, scholars who work in the eld
must have venues for presenting their research and ndings and for communicating and
collaborating. This is how the discipline moves forward and how the history of our stateevolves, and this is what the TSHA Annual Meeting has provided for more than a century.
I want to thank President Gregg Cantrell, the Associations Board of Directors, and
the administrators of the University of North Texas for all that they do to ensure
that this organization continues to thrive and provide a scholarly foundation for the
extraordinary heritage that we share and that we have devoted a our lives to preserving
and perpetuating. See you in San Antonio.
