This new student REBELLION hasbeen churning like a hurricane intoivied administration and classroombuildings-and especially in studentdormitories. It's high time EVERYBODY
knows the FACTS!Students are demanding more "free
doms." That word, "freedoms," is thecurrent catchword for permissioeness-imeaning drunkenness, ill icit sex, abolition of rules and all restraints. Thepressure is on to relax rules and regulations on smoking, drinking, havingcars (for "necking" and illicit sex),visiting hours and prohibitions indormitories for those of opposite sex,and on "curfew" for girls.
This demand for such "freedoms"comes in the wake of the recent moralscollapse.
We have no such problems at theAmbassador Colleges-and there is aREASON! But many college authorit iesare being backed into a corner-bewildered before an onslaught of student questions.
Here are some of the questions towhich undisciplined students "DEAlAND" answers:
Should not students have the rightto dl"illk freely (even under age) intheir dormitory rooms? Shouldn't theybe allowed to "date" in their roomswith the doors closed? Should they notbe allowed to stay out all night whenever they wish?
At one of the oldest and most famous U. S. Eastern universities recentlystudents gained permission for girls tovisit boys' dormitories every day in theweek. On weekends they may remainunt il midn ight.

AN EW CRISIS has struck the collegesand universities of the Englishspeaking world . And this means
WORLD CRISIS, which threatens the continued existence of human life! Itthreatens YOUR very life! Its realseriousness is little realized.
Just weat is this new revolt strikingcollege campuses, making the BIG NEWSheadlines and newscasts? And WHY?It is directly connected with the teenage situation of 38 years ago, aboutwhich I wrote in the article-in thisnumber-c-on "What's WRONG With theYOUNGER GENERATION! "
It affects 1I0t Dilly college students. It affects "'eI"Jbody! It affects governments, commerce and industry, society
. as a whole.
I am the Chancellor of three colleges-two in the United States, and onein England. We don't have these disturbances on the Ambassador Collegecampuses. There is a reason! And Iwant to tell you that reason! But as aneducator I am intensely concerned aboutwhat is happening at other colleges.
First, WHY do I say this new crisison college campuses threatens all otherphases of civilization? I say it becausethis world in all facets of civilizationis precisely what its LEADERS have madeit. And the LEADERS in governmentsin business-in religion-in the entiresocial structure-are the product of theeducational system. They think, plan, and ad as they have been taught in theschools and the colleges.
These college students today, learningto defy all law and authority-beingschooled in rebellion-being taught thatthere are no absolutes-no solutions toproblems-no hope for the futurethese are the LEADERS of the future!
THINK OF IT! Never before has sucha thing happened in college and university life. Sit-down strikes! Mass demonstrations of rebellion against collegerules ! At America's largest university,

Why LATIN AMERICATURMOIL
Suddenly Latin America has exploded . The U. S. finds itselfinvolved, ridiculed, hated. Why?
by Gene H. Hogberg
O NCE AGAIN Latin America hasburst into the headlines !
In the most publicized action, the United States rushed marineand naval units to prevent Communisttake-over in the Dominican Republic. The U. S. was taking no chances thistime. There was no room for a "secondCuba" in the Caribbean.
The Dominican crisis is by no meansthe only trouble spot in Latin America.Problems are escalating all over.
Trouble Everywhere
In BOLIVIA, a recent 8-day strike by25,000 Communist-agitated tin strikersalmost blew up into a civil war. Renewed violence against Bol ivia's un popular military junta can be expectedat any time.
VENEZUELA, its wealth pillaged foryears by a corrupt dictatorsh ip, facesterror ism from both the right and theleft.
GUATE MALA could explode at anymoment. ECUADOR is kept calm only bya quasi-military government. URUGUAYis only weeks or at the most a fewmonths away from its worst economiccollapse in history. The gove rnmentthere is so completely divided that it isincapable of solving the impendingcrisis.
Elsewhere in this troubled hemisphere, coup d'etats hang over ELSALVADOR, HONDURAS and NICARAGUA.And in COLOMBIA, riotous college stu
dents have forced the gove rnment todeclare a nationwide state of siege.Colombian army units are also trying
to clamp down on a wave of Castroinspired kidnappings which have terrorized much of the country.
Finally, to dose out the "scoresheet," HAITI, next door neighbor of theDomi nican Republic, is said to bethoroughly undermined with Castroiteelements waiting for the ripe momentto start trouble.
Never before has Latin America beenin such COLOSSAL TURMOIL!
Why? What has gone wrong? Whatwill be the outcome of it all?
Why U. S. Acted So Fast
Even though the fighting in SantoDomingo stemmed from a popular rebellion against the military regime,U. S. Intelligence produced evidence ofunderhan ded Red involvement. Corn-

munis ts were speedily taking over therevolution, A day's delay could havebrought dire consequences . Th e evidence, however meager it appeared tosome, was enough to bring the nearinstantaneous United States response.Having learned from its sorry experience with Cuba, the United States knewthat it had to act first and explain later.
If the Dominican rebellion had goneunchecked, the crisis could have spreadto neighboring Haiti, whose westerncoast is situated only 50 miles fromCuba across the strategic shipping laneknown as the Windward Passage.Domination of this vita l arte ry (sixmajor U. S. trade routes pass through it )by an alien power would be a severethreat to the entire U. S. economy.
Despite these cold facts, the reactionthroughout the rest of Latin America tothe marine landings was quick- andvery unfri endly. "Revival of gun-boatpolicy," shouted some Latins, recallingan earlier marine occupation of theDominican Republic (1916.1924) .Many derisively labeled the U. S. policythe "Johnson Doctrine." Almost overnight it seemed the hands-off "GoodNe ighbor Policy" carefully nurtured byFranklin Delano Roosevelt was washedoverboard,
" Interven tion !"
At the height of the Dominicancrisis, George Natanson, Latin affairsexpert for the Los Angeles Times, took a tour of Central and SouthAmerican capitals. He was shocked atwhat he found. He reported that "thereare strong indications of trouble, uncertainty and a growhlg tide of anti-
U. S. sentiments. Thi s feeling was reflected in talks with government officials, politicians, members of the middle class, especially small businessmen, and workers. It was read in the dailynewspapers and heard on radio andtelevision."
"The voice of protest ," said Natanson, "is being heard from non-Communists and Commun ists, from all mannerof other political grou pings, from theextreme left wing to the farthest rightand including the moderates. Fromi' fexico south to Argent;na the cry isthe same eoerywbere: 'Lntert..'enl;011." "(Emphasis mine throughout article.)
It seems the Un ited States "can'twin for losing" in its relations withits volatile neighbors to the south.Non-intervention obviously means more"Cubas" ; intervention draws suspicionand hatred.
Whose Side Is Am erica On?
Make no mistake about it. Th e reovolts now under way throughout LatinAmerica have their origin in populardissatisfaction with the governmentsnow in power. Many of these areright-wing milit ary dictatorships (juntas) . Th e suffe ring popu laces wantchanges for the better-and fast. Th eywant social reforms. Th ey want landredistribution, higher wages.
Th e Commun ists and the Castroitesare taking advantage of the over-ripesituatio n. Th ey are siding with thedisgruntled masses, champio ning theircauses, all the while trying to use themto their own political advantage.
Such a mudd led situation makes the
June. 1965
Un ited States position even more difficult. Whenever it tries to counterCommunism by preserving the unpopu lar status quo, it is accused of beingagainst the wishes of the vast majori tyof Latin peoples. Up go the "Yanqui go-horne" banners !
Is T here a W ay Out?
Clearly someth ing has to be done tohalt Latin America' s slide into totalanarchy. The root causes of her ills aresocial and economic. Social, because ofthe inability of the Latin peoples andnations to get along with each other- and of their inability to tackle theirmul titudinous problems head-on . Governments are stilI changed more oftenby revolt than by democratic processes. But seldom do the new governmentsever solve anything. Economic, becausethe Latin countries have been tradit ionally geared to one-crop economies. Ifthe prices of coffee or bananas, or tin,drop-down go the economic fortu nesof whole nations. In add ition, smoldering jealousies within the Latin countriesthemselves have strang led inter-American trade . Most Latin countries have farmore ( up to ten times as much) tradewith the United States and Europethan they do among themselves. Indus tries in Latin countries operate behindtariff walls that average a 100 percentduty on imports. Often they range ashigh as 200 to 300 percent! As a result.industries operate in markets too smallfor efficient production.
The Answer: Economic
Integration
Viewing the dete riorating condition, leading Latin economists and politicianshave come up with a startling proposal :A common market for all of LAtinAm erica. Th is, they claim, would notonly be the way out of the economicmuddle , but would contribute towardalleviating much of the misery and suf fering of the masses.
The economists take as their patternfor action the booming six-nation Common Market in Europe . The EEC, as itis called, has helped raise Europe toits most prosperous era in history.T rade barriers with in the European

Queen Elizabeth 's Sta te Visit to Germany is history-making,prophetic. The Queen is the first British sovereign to se t footon German soil in over ha lf a century! Read how this visitfulfills Biblical prophecy. Learn the outcome of this Anglo.
German flirtation!
by Raymond F. McNair
WId. World Photos
Britain's Queen Elizabeth is the center of glittering reception at AugustusburgCastle near Bonn, W est Germany. Dinner in her honor was given by W estGerman President Heinrich Lubke. From left, Prince Philip, the Queen, Presi-
• dent Lubke, We st Berlin Mayor W illy Brandt, and Brandt's wife, Ruth.
T HERE can be no doubt- Queen. Elizabeth's eleven-day visit to
Germany has been an overwhelming success!
But it didn't begin that way!
At First- a Cool Reception
What was behind the seemingly coolreception which the Queen receivedwhen she set foot on German soil? Wasall Germany acutely aware that ant iNazi feelings still lie bone-deep inmany Britons? Most of today's livingBritons vividly remember the horrors ofWorld W ar II-the blitz in particular! Many also remember W orld War I.
What was really behind the appa rentchilly reception?
The British and German Governments had planned to make the Queen'strip to Germany a roaring success! TheGerman Government alone has spentmillions of del/fi che markJ on this royalState Visit.
The real reason appears to have beenthat of misunderstanding.
The German people had been instructed to be very careful in the properuse of protocol. As an example, theywere told not to use the word "Heil"when addressing Her Majesty ! Thismight conjure up unpleasant memoriesof the "Heil Hitler !" salutes used by theNazis during Wo rld W ar II,
Apparently, however, the Germanpeople didn 't have any real deep feeling against Queen Elizabeth personallyor against her visit to Germany. TheQueen is a gracious person, radiatingnatural charm and dign ity-one who isloved, respected and admired by everyone! The German Government and the
overwhelming majority of the Germanpeople appeared to be very enthusiasticabout the Queen's State Visit,
The Germans, a naturally energeticand enthusiastic people, simply didn'tknow how 10 behave toward tbis monarch-this sovereign of the oldestruling dynasty in the world!
Ge rman Kaiser -Yearni ngs
According to a survey recently conducted in Germany, over one-thi rd of
the German peop le secretly would liketo have a ruling sovereign similar tothe Kaisers who ruled them till theend of W orld W ar I.
After the Germans were instructedby their leaders to shout out the nameof " Elizabeth," everything seemed togo along very well. (Ge rmans are usually quick to obey orders!) The Germans, in fact, after the initial coolness, showed more enthusiasm for the
Queen's State Visit than they did dur-

to Britain andcause," thei r
ing the visits of either President Kennedy or Premier De Gaulle .
What is the real signif icance behindQueen Elizabeth's trip to Ge rmany?
Firstly, this royal tr ip to Germanygave Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phili pan opportuni ty to visit relatives of thePr ince. He has three married sistersliving in Ge rmany .
Th e real reasons behind this StateVisit, however, were mainly political!
The Queen's f irst public speech afterarri ving in Germany was at a state ban quet given at the Augustusburg Castleon Tuesday, May 18. In this speechQueen Elizabeth mentioned tha t theBritish and Gemnan peoples had beenclosely associated for many centuries. She said they had been fr iends andoften allies duri ng most of their longhistory.
The Queen then briefly mentionedthat Britain and Germany had "stood onopposite sides" during W orld W ars Iand II. She hastened to add, "Thistragic period in our relat ions is happilyover, "
Then she referredGermany's common"common interests."
" My presence here this evening istestimony to the fi rm conviction of myGovernment and people that the important tasks ahead of us can only besolved in the closest co-operation forwhich the earlier centuries of friendship provide an encouraging pat ternand examp le today" (Daily Express,May 19, 1965).
Britain Supports GermanReunification
The Queen then mentioned thatBritain and Germany must go on working patie ntly fo r bette r understand ing,for equal justice among all nations ifthey are to avoid "the clashes and divisions of earlier ages."
"This is why we stand together inNATO. Why, despite Brit ain' s heavycommitments elsewhere in the world ,so many of our armed forces are servingin Germany. It is why ure wholeheartedly Iupport )'ollr natural wish forpeaceflll REUNIFICA TION," theQueen concluded.
This word "reunification" struck the
golden bell of harmony. The Gemnanslook favorably upon anybody who supports the ir demand that East and W estG ermany must be reunited. And, so faras they are concerned, the sooner thebetter !
Even the Prime Mi nister, biro Wilson, on his recent trip to Bonn, let theGermans know that Britain was behindGe rmany 100 percent in her bid for reunification.
"News that Mr. Harold Wilson hadagreed with Chancellor Erhard to beginnegotiations to try to Imih' Germanyastonished some of Mr. Wilson'sfriends . . :' reported Britain's Time& Tide, 11-17 March, 1965.
The Quee n cont inued: '' If'e share aninte rest in wide and Imfe t/ered international trade. W e believe that Europeshould be united on as broad a basis aspossible and we are anxious to pia), our[ull part W IT HIN [not without] theEuropean Community:" (Dail)' Express,May 19.)
Th e Queen was undoubtedly here referring to Britain's desire to join theCommon i\1arket. She then mentionedthat, in order to achieve this goal, "wemust create an atmosp here of mlltllalconfidence between the countries ofEurope and a will ingness to plan forthe future in genuine co-operation."(i bid.) British leaders hope Germanywill co-operate with her by helpin g hergain admission in the Common Market.
The Quee n's host, West Ge rmanPresident LUbke, seized on the Queen'sword "reunification" as though it werea mag ic word .
President Lubke repl ied : "Twentyyears after the war GERMANY is stillDIVIDED. Seventeen million of ourcountrymen are living unde r foreignrule.
"They will be asking themselvestobetber this visit of friendship canhelp to change their situation for thebette r.
"As a loyal ally, your Majesty's Goverment have repeatedly called for anend to be put to this situat ion [thedivision of German)'], a situation bothhumanly and politica lly III/bearable andwhich will prevent peace in Europe aslong as the German problem remainsunsolved" (ibid.) .
Germany Backs British Bidfor EEC Membership
After stressing the point of Germanreunification, President LUbke then added: "lt is 0111' hope and desire to seeBritain included ill the European Un ion [ meaning the Common MarketJ."(ibid.)
The Prime Minister' s recent trip toVienna, Aust ria--one of Britain' s partners in the near-defunct EFTA (European Free Trade Association) -again revealed just how despe rately Brita inwould like to join the Common Market.
Britain has recently taken one gigantic stride in that direction by deciding to adopt the Continental MetricSystem. This means that the yard willbe replaced by the metre, the quart bythe litre. England is go ing to make thisdifficult and costly change in preparation for her fina l plunge into theCommon Market. She also hopes thather switchover to the Met ric System willmake it easier, in the meantime, forher to trade with members of the Common Market.
Th e British Government. through itsPrime Minister and Queen, have nowmade it clear, officially, that Britain isdefinitely behind Germany's bid for reunification. In tu rn, they expect Germany to help muscle them into theCommon Market.
History Repeats Itself
W hat will be the outcome of theQuee n's State Visit to Ge rmany? Andhow will her visit affect the peoplesof Britain , the Commo nwealth andAmerica ?
Before we can answer this question
we must un derstand the following import ant facts of history: ( I) Thewhite peoples of America and Britainhave primarily descended from the ancient so-called Lost Ten Tri bes of Israel. (The astounding proo f is found inour free booklet, The United Statesand Th e British Commonwealth inProphecy. Write fo r it. ) (2) TheGermanic peop les have descended primarily from the ancient "Assyrians"who early settled Europe in the days ofthe Assyrian Kin g Ninus.

The 10th chapter of Isaiah revealsclearly that God will use the Assyrians(the present-day Germans) as the"rod" of His anger-as "the staff" ofHis indignation to punish the "hypocritical" people of Israel-primarily theEnglish-speaking world. ( Isa. 10:56) . Later, God will also humble theAssyrians, utterly destroying the prideof their power (verses 5-26).
Before this Assyrian-led Un itedStates of Europe defeats the peoples ofAmerica, Britain and other democraciesof Nort hwestern Europe, Bible prophecy reveals the peoples of Britain andAmerica will make repeated overturesto the Germans-for financial and mili

The leaders of America and Britain
were taken into captlVlty by Assyriaabout 721-718 B. C. This was Israel'sth ird and final invasion by Assyria.
The Assyrians transported these captive Israelitish slaves of the House ofIsrael to Assyria and Media- south andeast of present-day Armenia and theCaspian Sea ( II Kings 17: 6, 23, 24).From there the tribes migrated toWestern Europe around the time of thedecline of the Roman Empire.
Th e present-day descendants of Israel(the Anglo-Saxon-CeItic peoples ofNorthwestern Europe - Scandinavia, the British Isles and those countriessettled by these peoples) have likewisetwice been invaded by Germans-during World War I and World War II.Bible prophecy reveals that the Germans (t he modern Assyrians) willagain lead Europe and will igniteWorld W ar III . Here's an article written by Herbert W. Armstrong for the firstissue of The PLAIN TRUTH, seven years BEFORE the magazineexisted. It was never published . It appears now, 38 years

Almost immediately after my conversion, in the spring of 1927, thevision came to mind of a new kind ofmagazine I hoped would attain a verylarge circulation. For 16 years I hadbeen in the advertising and magazinefield. I was experienced in the writingof magazine articles-but in the fieldof business and merchandising-not inthe religious category.
The name that came to mind for themagazine was The PLAIN TRUTH. I hadprinters make up a 32-page "dummy"with glossy heavy cover-almost exactlythe kind and size of paper you are holding in your hands right now. Only, ofcourse, all the pages were blank whitepaper. Next, I employed a professionalletter artist to design and letter in afront cover, in two colors.
The cover of that first "dummy"PLAIN TRUTH contained the captions offive or six feature articles I hoped towrite for the first issue. Three of thosearticles were then written.
One contained the headline you seeabove. Another was captioned: "Puttingthe Evolutionary Concept into Y ourChild'J Mind." We did finally publishthat one in July, 1964. A third one, never published in the form then written, was titled: "The Foundation forSunday Sacredness CRUMBLES!" Thematerial in that original manuscript,
by Herbert W. Armstrong
rewritten. is available in the booklet onThe Resurrection.
But those were the days of financialreverses, trial, test, and actual hunger. The way did not open, then, to fulfillthe dream of publishing a big-circulation magazine called The PLAIN TRUTH.What I then had in mind was a magazine to sell on the newsstands.
It was a long and trying seven yearsbefore the way opened actually to produce The PLAIN TRUTH. And when itdid, at last, come, it had to be the smallest, least-costly "home-made" type of"magazine" conceivable-mimeographedon a borrowed mimeograph-headlinescut by hand without a stylus or scopetype cut on stencils with a borrowedtypewriter.
By that time I had made a considerable advancement in Biblical knowledge. I realized, then, that The PLAINTRUTH could never be sold. The newsstand idea was gone. Besides, who eversaw a mimeographed "magazine" soldon newsstands? Don't laugh. It wasn'tfunny-then! Also, by February, 1934,the situation demanded other subjectsthan the article on flaming youth. Probably this article already had becomemisplaced in that old file-I do notremember.
Anyway, after being "out of sightout of mind" for 38 long years, thisarticle now suddenly turns up in anold, almost yellowed manuscript. Whenmy wife discovered it, I was intrigued.I began to read it. I had completely forgotten it. I found it interesting. Perhaps that was only because I had writtenit myself-and the facts involved in
its sudden resurrection after a 3S·yearburial. You may not find it a bit interesting-but I simply can't resist puttingit before you to find out.
Before My Sons Were Born
This article was written before eitherof my sons were born! THINK OF IT!The "Sheik-Flapper" generation aboutwhich I then wrote is the 50- to 60-yearold generation TODAY !
You 50- and 55-year-old people!Were YOU those "hell-bent" "sheiks"and "flappers" of 1927? IMPOSSIBLE!!!Yet, it's TRUE! I can hardly believeit-and I doubt if you can!
The thought, however, intrigues me!You middle-age readers, now at leastapproachillg "old age," are going toread, below, what I wrote about YO U,when you were the "hell-bent" teenagers shocking the "older generation"sitting then in such stern judgment ofyou!
And you teen-agers among our readers! I wonder if you won't get a "kick"out of reading how "wild" and "sinful" were your parents-yes, and evenperhaps your GRANDparents-when theywere yottr age.
Yo u teen-agers, with your modernteen-age slang. Are you going to geta "bang" out of the kid slang yourparents and grandparents were using? And I wonder if any of you 50- to 60year-clds will even remember how someteen-agers talked, then. Perhaps youactually didn't-but many others did!
But you of the older generation whowere the teen-agers when I wrote thisarticle-do you remember that the "old-

1 A sheik meant "a masterful man to whomwomen are irresistibly attracted." The termwas popularized by E. M. Hull's novel TheSheik, later made into a movie. A flapper was "a young girl considered bold andunconventional in actions and dress: termpopular from about 1910 to 1930:' Thename is derived from the custom of girlswearing galoshes or overshoes unfastened sothey would flap. Quite an attention-getter!

The Real Cause
There is, beyond a doubt. much truthin both their views .
And now I intend to let fly a fewobservations of my own upon this hotlydebated question. I have mixed considerably with the younger generation.
Harold Bell Wright, literary critic, assumed younger generation wasan improvement over its elders, thatthe youth of the 20 's would be ableto solve world's problems I

engaging In debate. Terhune says thesheik-flapper generation is hell-bent,Wright says it is not.
Terhune believes much of the troublelies in the newer psychology' in childrearing. Instead of having been whippedand raw-hided into parental obedience, the present generation of youngsters, hesays, is the victim of a treat-with-kindness, do-as-you-please psychology. Lackof parental obedience, he believes, isthe heart of the difficulty.
W right denies that our young peopleare hell-bent, because, he says, they aremerely apeing their elders. According toWright, the parents are to blame- notin lack of discipline, so much as throughexample. The real trouble, says Wri ght.is that Dad attempts to correct youngWill ie something like this:
"W illie, I want you to keep out ofmy cigarettes r: Or, "W illie, if you eversneak any of my hip-flask liquor' outto a party again, I' ll cut down yourallowance r:
Or that Dad will reprimand hisflapper-daughter thus:
"Bubbles, you little painted hussy, you let Mother's lipstick and rougealone!"
Mr. W right sees in our snappy. peppyyounger generation a real improvementover those immediately previous. Theirlife, their pep, their zip, their energy.he says, is go ing to do wonders whenthey are a little older and take thehelm.'
Mr. Terhune says human nature hasnot changed. Our youngsters of today,hell-bent as he pictures them, are doingmerely the things the older generationwould have done with the lid of restraint th rown off . They haven't beenheld down, while the older generationwas.

sters" were out-of-date "old fogies"then ? ] remember reading a discourseAbraham Lincoln wrote. I think it wasfrom a speech he made, on the subjectof "Old Fogy." The very first "oldfogies," he said, were probably Adamand Eve. And the older generationshave been "old fogy" to the youngstersever since !
In 1927, when this article was written, this "new psychology" on childrearing was just emerging . Today ithas fastened itself like a leech or abarnacle onto a deceived and misledsociety-and the greatly multiplied rateof juvenile delinquency testifies to itsefficacy.
Here, then, is the article written in1927, now published in the kind ofmagazine of which I then dreamedand with a few comments I have justnow written, In the form of footnotes:
by Herberl W. Armstrong
I s THE younger generation of thismodern day hell-bent, or is it not?
An older generation dares to sit instern and solemn judgment. The jazz.crazed, pleasure-mad youngsters hurlback the defiant retort that their oldfashioned, back-number elders simply donot understand. The sheik-flapper 1
generation emphatically assert their ability to take care of themselves. And theysimply step the harder on the gas.
The Terhune-Wright Debate
Two literary luminaries-Harold BellWright and Albert Payson Terhune 2 _
attempt to settle this mooted questionin the June American Afagazine}3 by
June, 1965
I believe I know them and understandthem-at least in part. I am, in age,7just midway between this sheik-flappergeneration and the older one which isso ready to condemn. I have mixed withthe younger set in their high schooland college activities. I know them, Iknow their parents, and I know theircollege professors.
It would be simple folly to attributeall the wild and, to the oldsters, shocking characteristics of the young folkto any single cause. Many things, ofcourse, combine to produce the composite sheik-flapper generation .
They are, in the first place, merelythe victims of unhealthy influencesand this INCLUDES their parents! Theyare exactly what training, environment, example, and outside influences havemade them.
I shall not attempt to rate these influences in the order of their importance. That is merely opinion, anyway.
But I want to mention, f irst, the reosult of lax parental training. It is truethat the parents of the preceding generation refused to "spare the rod andspoil the child." The youngsters of thatgeneration were reared in such strictdiscipline that, when they themselvesbecame parents, they simply could notbear to be so strict with their childrenas their parents had been with them ,Their childhood and youth had been, generally speaking, one of self-sacrifice,strict obedience to parental law, andlong and frequent "whalings.' Thememory of this unremitting parentaldiscipline was so indelibly burned intotheir memory that it produced a definitereaction, So the present crop of youngerpeople were reared in a brand of discipline that swung almost to the opposite extreme. They were not made tosuffer the pangs of self-sacrifice, thestern authority, the frequent and extreme whippings to which their parentshad fallen heir.
The chief difficulty, though, was notso much a matter of substituting psychology for thrashings.' MOlt young-
7 I was then 35.8 Mere physical punishment, alone, may be
totally ineffective or harmful. Too many parents do not spank for the right purpose, atthe right time, or in the right degree. Too
The PLAIN TRUTH
sters were not taught SELF-DISCIPLINE.They were not trained in SElF·CONTROL.
The greatest handicap to the youngerpeople today is their utter disregard forself-control. Th ey have been permittedto grow up following DESIRE, instead ofDUTY- given reign to impulse and inclination, instead of using judgment. They have formed the disastrous habitof being led and controlled by theirwhims, their passions, their fancies.Consequences are seldom weighed orconsidered, and still less seldom heeded. The question isn't "SHOULD I?" but"Do I WANT to?" There's no controlof self.
When power is uncontrolled, thenthe greater the power, the greater thepotential DANGER ! If this younger generation is imbued with an excess of pep, energy, and power, the greater is thedanger, unless that power is controlled- held in check by the force of selfdiscipline. W'hen such excess energyis permitted to run riot wherever blindimpulse leads, there's likely to be aWRECK!
Mr. Wright views this tremendousburst of speed, which we observe being
often it is unaccompanied by the necessaryteaching . It should be 'used to impress thelesson. When the teaching is absent, nothingis impressed but resentment and a sense ofinjustice.
The child should never be literally spankedinto doing what he had rebelled from doingbut because he rebelled-because of disobedience and wrong attitude. It should be administered immediately upon the offense,or failure promptly to obey-not after repeated threatenings to punish unless he obeys- threats expressed alter initial refusal toobey, and while the child continues in tebellious refusal to obey. Don't give the rebellious child repeated opportunity to rebel. Besure he hears and understands what he is toldto do. If in doubt of this, repeat the instruction or command once more, plainly. Then,if ignored or rebelled against, punish immediately-making him understand it is administered because of failure to obey, refusalto obey, or deliberate rebellious attitude.Make him UNDERSTAND he must obey whenspoken tal-not when he gets good andready. One exception: if in a public place, where the punishment would attract publicattention, and probably indignant criticismor hostile action, tell the child quietly butfirmly he is going to have to be punishedfor his misdemeanor when you return home. Then, on returning to the privacy of yourhome, talk to him, making the lesson plainand clear, and impress it with the spanking.
Most mothers spank so lightly nothing isreally impressed. Make it hurt enough to beimpressive! Many fathers spank too hard.Never injure. Make it impressive short ofinjury. Like the stitch in time, the spankingin time may save nine others.

demonstrated by the youngsters, as awonderful asset for the future, whenthis generation takes the helm. But willall this pep and speed and energy bewisely and beneficially directed? Willit even be available then? Vitality, likemany other things, needs to be conserved. When it's wasted, and dissi
pated, the supply is soon exhausted. And by what process of reasoning do
we know that this sheik-flapper agehas greater power of personal vigorthan the generations which went before? When the lid's off the teakettle, letting out so much more steam, is theremore steam inside than when the lidwas on ? Our youngsters have thrownoff the lid ! They are simply letting off ,and not conserving, the steam!
Paren tal Examp leNo Whitewash
I sharply disagree with Mr. Wrightin any notion that the sins of the parents can be applied as a whitewashfor those of their children. Supposewe grant that Willie cops onto hisdad's cigarettes, and snitches his bootleg liquor? Suppose Bubbles does learnfrom her mother to use rouge and lipstick, and to pluck her eyebrows? Ithappens, I grant, altogether too often .But that does not make it right.
I know parents who are far moreinterested in the social popularity ofson and daughter than in their soul'ssalvation-who encourage their youngsters in all the searches after a thr illwhich keep up the feverishly excitedpace. And who do not dream of whatgoes on beyond the focus of their vision-and would not believe it if theywere told.'
But does the fact that parents aresetting the example-even encouragingthe tendencies of youth-erase existingsins? If youth is hell-bent, does parentalexample and sanction alter the pathtoward hell ? Or does it, rather, signifymerely that the parents are sliding downon the same toboggan?
Youth is subjected, primarily, to fourmajor influences-the home-the school- the church- and outside friends, activities, and amusements. So muchfor the effect of the modern-day homelife. We have not had much to say
12
about the religious influence of thehome life-but then, there is so littleof that in the average home, it simplyrequires no mention!
The School Influence
Now for the second influence-theschool. Even in the grades and highschools, today, the evolutionary conceptis planted, ready -manufactured, into theabsorbent minds of youth. Not necessarily EVOLUTION-not by that name. But the evolutionary concept dominatesevery branch of study in the schoolcurriculum today. That concept is thebasic point of view which denies themiracles of the Bible-denies the Creation account of Genesis, denies theauthority of revelation.
It is the point of view which teaches, instead, that for millions of years manhas been slowly, steadily climbing up·ward. Civilized man once was what thesavage is today. Between that prehis
toric day of dim antiquity and the pres·ent, man has passed through the OldStone Age, the New Stone Age, and theothers through which evolutionaryscience imagines life has traveled.
The chief god, or gospel, of this
The PLAIN TRUTH
concept is PROGRESS. Everything is, bynatural law, getting constantly betterand better. Progress is the gospel of theage! The basis of this concept is NA·
TURALISM, and the reign of natural law,as opposed to supernaturalism and pos·sible interference by a Divine Creatorwith the work of His own Creation.
In high school, I say, the young folksare given this CONCEPT . It forms thebasis of any study which it might involve. This point of view is merelytaken for granted. Not presented, assuch, supported by arguments, andpropagated into acceptance. Just simplyassumed, as a matter of course, andtaught as a universally known, commonly accepted FACT.
In college, the student gets evolutionstraight-without any deception or nicknames. A year or two of college, andhe is a rare student indeed who is nota thorough convert to the doctrine ofevolution.
If he ever held to fundamental religious beliefs, they are shattered tobits by now! His eyes are suddenly"opened." He now views his old religion in the light of an ignorant super·stition-a foolish bit of folklore, not

unlike the Santa-Claus myth. He maybe shaken, bewildered, upset. But hisdisillusionment is complete. His hopeof an eternity in "Heaven" is blasted asa foolish, childish dream. Some few goout and commit suicide.
But most of them, perhaps havingexercised a certain self-restraint, due toreligious convictions, until now, simplythrow restraint to the four winds! Ifthey have not done so sooner, theynow hop on the bandwagon, and jointhe frenzied gang.
What's Wrong with
Churches
Now what about the churches? Whatis their contribution to the modemtendencies of youth? In former generations, the churches held more or less ofa balancing, restraining influence upon
June, 1965
adolescents. The church, especially inthe smaller communities, was a sort ofsocial center. The young folk, mostof them, attended Sunday School. Inchurch they often heard inspiring, interesting, fiery sermons.
But that's all changed today. Theaverage church is now about two-thirdsempty, the other third being populatedwith gray heads. The average sermontoday is lifeless, boring, lacking in fireand power. The church no longer servesa social need. The automobile,' goodroads, modern movies, dances and entertainments, have usurped the churches'social ministration. The teen-agers areno longer interested.
Some churches have attempted tocompete with the lure of modern amusements by bringing movies, amateurplays, dances, and other entertainmentsinto the church. But, in the amusementgame, our churches have proved themselves pitiful novices. The crowd stillprefers its entertainment where it ispresented with professional and worldlyskill. Other churches have attempted tomeet the second great competitor-thefast-spreading "intellectual" skepticism- by turning modernist.t? and throwing to the four winds all that is vitalin fundamental Christian doctrine.
The churches, today, have provedthemselves incapable of meeting themodern problems of youth.
Two outstanding lures have robbedthe churches of the young peoplemodern amusements, and modern "rationalistic" skepticism, the outgrowth ofevolution. The churches have failed tomeet these momentous new snares because they have been wanting in sounddoctrine. They have turned the Bibleupside down. Sound Bible truth wouldhave met-at every turn of the roadthis so-called newer knowledge,"which has sprung from evolutionaryteachings. Sound Bible teaching wouldhave kept the ministers, the churchleaders, full of spiritual POWER. Itwould have fired them with vigor, withinterest, with heart-warming, soul-satis-

fying church services. Our young peopleare simply heart-hullgry - that's allthat' s wrong. They're empty-and theywant to be filled up, and warmed inthe inner man. The churches have failedthem. They don't understand-how canwe expect that they should ?-and theyare merely seeking the spiritual foodthey really need, in movies, in dances,in wild entertainment, in "necking,"sex and debauchery, and all too oftenfinding the "inspiration" in bootlegliquor! They're getting-and buying ata dear price-cheap Woolworth jewelry, when what they really crave is thepearls of a heart-warming, Spirit-firi ngChristian experience!
The Sinful "Don't's"
Religion has come to be considered,by these youngsters the oldsters condemn, as a dark, gloomy, profitless,penance-paying life. The average adolescent's conception of Christianity is awhole flock of "Don't's," beginningwith capital "D's." The churches shout"Don't dance," "Don't play cards,""Don 't go to movies," "Don't bob yourhair," "Don't smoke," The church offers no alternative. Christianity isviewed as a sort of living painfu l penance.
Instead of something which makesone happy-instead of something whichwould feed those cold, empty, hungryhearts-religion is pictured as something gloomy, foreboding , painful, andcold and as silly and superstitious.
When Jesus ascended into Heaven,He promised that the Comforter wouldcome. And He promised that "ye shallreceive POWER after that the HolySpirit is come upon you." The Apostleswere FULL of power, and fire, andvigor, and interest, after the day ofPentecost. What's become of thatPOWER? What have men done withthe heart-warming, soul-satisfying Comforter which Christ sent down fromHeaven? That's what our young peopleare really seeking. But they don't knowit, and it seems there's no one to tellthem, or lead the way!
W hat Parents Don't Kn ow
Now what about the outside influences? The automobile. The movie. The
13
cabaret, the night club, and the speakeasy? The dance hall. The social affa irsof high school and college? These havedegenerated into artificial, Devil-inspired outlets which are doing in a falseway what the churches and the homeshave failed to do in a right and healthyway-ministering to the passion ofmodern youth for an internal warming-up.
I know something of the modernconditions from first-hand investigation. And while I realize full well that theaverage parent of middle age or pastwill never believe what is actual factand truth-it is my conviction thatJudge Ben B. Lindsey," while offeringa dangerous solution, presents at thesame time a really true and accuratepicture of the moral status of the youngfolk of today. The real shocking resultstake place, of course, under cover. Mostolder people refuse to believe the realtruth. Judge Lindsey is in position toknow. Listen to a few brief excerptsfrom his book The Revolt of ModernY outh,
On the testimony of thousands ofhigh school students-average students, including all classes-more thall 90perrelli of all the youth who go toparties, attend dances, and ride togetherin automobiles, indulge in hugging andkissing. "Some girls," says Lindsey,"insist on this kind of thing from boysthey go with, and are as aggressive, in asubtle way, in their search for suchthrills as are the boys themselves."
A certain very beautiful and spiritedgirl told the Judge frankly that she refused to go out with a certain boy because he lacked pep, and didn't knowhow, as she put it, to "love me up.""Do all the boys do such things nowadays?" asked the Judge. "Of coursethey do," she retorted . "If they don't,there is something wrong with them."
But there is another type in the(Please continue 011 page 17)

What's WRONG with theYOUNGER GENERATION?
flapper-world - quite numerous andcommon-not at allover-sexed, but whonevertheless permits promiscuous liberties. He quotes the conversation of sucha typical girl-extraordinari ly keen andintelligent-of well-to-do and apparently good parents. She is unusuallyattractive to boys. She is a typical flapper-glib, slangy, sarcastic, cynical. Shepermits occasional kissing, because it'sexpected.
1927 Teenage Slang
"But don't you resent the way theydance?" asked the Judge.
"Oh, you mean the button-shining?"she asked casually. "Not at all. Close

dancing affects some girls-but it neverhas any effect on me."
"There is a common impression tothe contrary," observed the Judge.
"I know there is," she came backcrisply. "All the old kill-joys and weep-
ing-willows in the country think thedirt that is in their own minds. That'sthe way they'd feel; and how they doenvy us the thoughts we don't think!"
"But- -" the Judge began."I'm telling you the truth," she went
on. "Most of us girls don't get anyspecial thrill out of close dancing. Wedo get a thrill out of dancing itself ;and we go to parties with these youngcrumpet munchers and snuggle pupsbecause we like to dance, and for noother reason."
"And the---er--<:rurnpet munchers?" the Judge asked, trying to snapthe words out the way she did.
"They dance for the kick they getout of it," she said promptly.
"In the dancing?"
"Yes, in the dancing-holding thegirl close, you know. And afterward,in petting, heavy necking, and otherthings, if she'll stand for it. I don't."
I have quoted this conversation indetail, because it is a fair sample of thekind of language employed by highschool pupils of today, especially in thecities, and it is absolutely typical ofthe prevailing situation.
Hell·Bent?
Are the youngsters hell-bent ? Listento some of the Judge'S statistics andestimates, based upon, beyond doubt, the best information available in theUnited States.
Says Judge Lindsey: "At least 50%of those who begin with hugging andkissing (an d that is 90% of all high school pupils) do not restrict themselvesto that, but go furthe r, and indulge inother sex liberties which, by all the conventions, are outrageously improperhalfway sex intimacies that wreck thehealth and morals alike." And theJudge continues that "15% to 25% ofthose who begin with the huggingand kissing eventually lose their virtuecompletely." Not necessarily promiscuity, or frequency, he explains, but ithappens.
Most people will not believe thesefacts. But they are based upon investigation, and upon actual records. Thetruth is that the real facts are farworse than most people WANT to be.Iieve. I know parents of high schooland college children who simply scoffat any such statements of conditions asoutlined above-and whose very ownchildren are on the same road rightnow, in its earlier stages-and yet theseparents would never believe it, andare doing nothing to prevent it.
They have never taught their childrenfrankly and honestly about sex problems. They have not brought them upin sound religious teaching. They havenot trained them in self-discipline andself-control and right direction. Theyhave permitted them to grow up following blind impulse, desire, inclination, and whim. Their children have beenequipped with no safeguard-no protection. They're getting a good dose ofevolution and atheistic teachings inschool-and they're out on wild partiescontinually. Are they hell-bound?
Parental Responsibility
The parents of today simply do notrealize the DANGER. Never has thepathway of youth been paved with somany temptations and pitfalls-andstrewn with so many moral casualties-as today. Never has the responsibilityof child rearing and parental guidanceand training been so grave.
You who are parents- if you loveyour children- do not underestimate thedanger. The school influence-the outside influences-all must be counteracted. The responsibility falls squarelyupon the shoulders of you parents.
The alert, watchful, thinking parentneed not be alarmed. The danger lies inignorance, in laxity, and in blinding theeyes to existing facts and conditions.Don't underestimate the influences yourchildren will be called upon to face.

to do,
Bring your children up in soundBible doctrine-it is the one best pro·tection against all forms of temptationand evil in all the world , Teach thechildren to UND ERSTAND, Explain theWHY of Christian doctrine. It is reasonable, rational-don' t let them regardit as something foolish or silly. Letthem realize that a true spirit-filledChristian life is a FULL life-a happylife-a joyful life-a peaceful life-alife of power, of strength, of service,of accomplishment.
Jesus was hum ble. H e was meek.H e was lowly. But Jesus was STRONG
POWE RFU L. He is the most powerfulman who ever walked on the face ofthis earth- the actual Maker and Creator of this very earth itself! And yet, with all this supreme power, H e washumble and meek. That is the way weshou ld be. Not self-exalting-c-not glo rying in seIf- not vain-but realizing thatall power and strength comes fromGod, through the H oly Spirit, and thenseeking all of it we can get, and giv ingthe praise where it belongs-to theEternal !
W e parents need to realize that timeshave changed. Our youngsters face influences and conditions far different
from those we faced, Don't justify yourown laxity by saying , "I don't believeconditions are as bad as they're painted."An ostrich can' t escape thre atened danger by sticking his head in the groundand hiding h is eyes from the danger.Young people today are thinking frankly, talking open ly, about subjects andproblems which never used to be discussed. Th ey're asking questions, Don 'tthink you can hush them up , Safetylies in open, frank, honest, straightforward, God-fearing explanation- inknowledge and understanding ,
Th e adolescents of today have hungry minds, and hun gry hearts, Theirfate lies in our hands.
Let's not make the fatal mistake ofth inking we can steer them safely fromthe shoals of worldly temptations merelyby saying, "Don't dance! Don' t go tomovies ! Don't smoke! Don't drink!"
Their starved emotions, their pent-upenergies, are going to find an outlet, one way or the other. If we don't wantthem to fa ll victim to this world 's tawdry imitations, then we must show themthe REAL THING, If you don't give yourchildren something constructively BET·
TE R, they will dance, they will drink, they will dissipate, in spite of you.N ever have we needed the help and thepower of God as we need it now!

live in an age of loneliness, "free love"licentiousness, frustrations, pervertedthinking-a general out-and-out rebellion against the standard of previousgenerations.
What is happening? Why is therean upheaval and revolt againstpreviously accepted social behavior? Why do most people fail to agree onwhat is the best way to handle theirprivate and business lives?
Whose Opinion Counts?
Look magazine's article, ,"Th eTwisted Age," reported that 100 persons"were reminded of last winter's prostitution scandal on Long Island." Thatscandal "involved more than a dozenwomen, including several mothers, who, with their husbands' consents, went out on calls to 'see' men atcharges of $25 to $100. Most of thoseinterviewed (by Look) had heard the
I story. Startlingly, 77 percent felt themselves unable to make a moral judgment on whether the housewife-prostitutes should be condemned. A fewthought they should be admired"
(Look, Dec. 15, 1964, p. 42) .
That's the world you live in!
Why should the big majority ofpeople be in a fog of indecision anddoubt as to what is morally right orwrong? Why does almost everyone justhave an "opinion"-but not reallyknow what is best?
Most people have no real standardof judgment. No central source theyknow that can dogmatically tell themwhether or not a certain thing is rightor wrong. And , no wonder! They haverejected God 's Word.
Even today's churches at times admitit! One religious publication recentlyadmitted: "Thus, despite the fact thatthe Bible remains our best-seller, it hasbecome little more than an obsolete'sacred book' to which most of its devotees pay lip -service but which theypractically never read, study, or understand ."
How true!
God's Word, which reveals HisLaw, has been rejected. His Law tellsus the difference between right andwrong. Yet, even professing "Christianity" pays little or no heed to it!
Isn't it time that we got back to the
faith that was once delivered to thesaints? One of the early New Testament Church saints, the Apostle Paul, said: "I had not known sin, but by thelaw: for I had not known lust, exceptthe law had said, Thou shalt not covet"(Rom. 7:7).
Yes, the great apostle to the Gentileswould have been like today's big majority-that is, would not have knownthat it was wrong to lust-except God'sLaw told him! Is it any wonder thatthe major ity today are unable to knowwhether or not the housewife-prostitutes should be condemned?
Only Lip Service
Most of those who claim to beChristians pay only lip service to theBible and rarely ever read or study it.Do you have a Bible? How often doyou study it?
God says: "W herefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the willof the Lord is" (Eph. 5:17). How areyou going to understand what God'swill is unless you study the handbookof life that He has made so readilyavailable?
The materialistic world, created byhuman ingenuity, has turned men's

minds inward, upon himself. Insteadof looking into the pages of God'sWord, men have been caught up in awhirlwind of human acitvity and pastimes.
Men are left only with their humanideas and opinions. No standard ofrighteous judgment exists because theonly righteous standard has been rejected!
In a time when the cry Jor "freedom" and "liberty" is being echoedaround the world, mankind needs toget back to that best seller, yet leastunderstood, of all books, the HolyBible. It tells us what real freedom andliberty are. It contains the laws thatprovide the freedom mankind so desperately needs.
God' s Laws Still in Force
But, the common idea today is thatGod's Ten Commandments have eitherbeen done away, changed or, if admitted to be in force, are a ball andchain about those who would dare obeythem, Let's candidly look into the Bibleand see what it reveals.
"By this," says I John 5:2-3, "weknow that we love the children of God,when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God,that we keep his commandments: andhis commandments are not grievous ."
Can we believe this clear, simple

scripture? God 's law and God's lovecannot be separated . His laws express
( His love. They tell us what true loveis. God 's Commandmen ts tell us howto love others . They are meant for ourgood . They are not some grievous balland chain about our necks.
True, of ourselves, we cannot keepGod's law. That's why we need the
Spirit of God, the power of God, thatwill help us obey Him.
"I am come," said Christ, "that theymight have life , and that they mighthave it more abundantly" (John10 :10) . No wonder , then, this sameChrist also said: " . . . If thou wilt enterinto life , keep the commandments"(Mat. 19:17) .
Many try to separate God 's lovefrom H is law that leads to true happiness and freedom .
Christ said: "Think not that I amcome to destroy the law, or the prophets : I am not come to destroy, but tofulfil. For verily I say unto you, Tillheaven and earth pass, one jot or onetittle shall in no wise pass from thelaw, till all be fulfill ed" (Mat. 5 :1718) .
Isn't this the opposite from whatyou've always heard? Especially whenit comes to the commandment tellingus what day God has set apart as holy?Read Exodus 20:8-11. Do you believeand follow this command?
Christ set us the perfect example .And He commanded us : "Be [become}ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect"(Mat. 5:48). .
We must fulfill God 's law, even asJesus did . Instead of doing away withGod's law, we must do away with ournatural desires that are contrary toGod's law! We must let Christ liveHis law in us through the power ofthe Hol y Spirit.
Should it be any surprise to see aworld full of problems when the professing "Christian" churches lead theway in trying to abolish God's laws?God's laws were designed to preventproblems .
Alchemists Should HaveTaught Us a lesson
Only a few hundred years ago certain men, called alchemists, tried to
Th e PLAIN TRUTH
defy the physical laws God set in motion. The alchemists labored long andhard to do a physical impossibilityto convert or change cheap lead intoexpensive gold. Aft er many fruitlessyears of labor , they had to admit thatth is elemental change could not bemade .
Today, people are laboring just asdiligently trying to do the impossiblewith the moral codes. Instead of obeying the laws of God that govern moralsand affect men's minds, men are desperately trying to work out their ownsystem of morals.
Th ese human moral codes are contrary to the spiritual laws of God , asexemplified by the Ten Commandments.Happiness can come only when mangets in harmony with God's laws.
Can you imagine what would happenif a chemist or physicist would decideto disregard the knowledge of theknown laws of chemistry and physicsand set out independently to make uphis own? The alchemists tried it . ..and utterly failed!
What if a farmer would decide toplant seed in the wron g season ? Howmuch do you think he would harvestthat year? God's material creation isgoverned by definite, active laws.
21
So is human conduct . But men, going their own ways and not heedingthe words of Scripture that have beenthere for thousands of years, continueto devise their own counterfeit moralcodes.
Speaking of the time in which welive, a University of Chicago sociologist, Philip M. Hauser, made this significant statement : "There was never atime in the history of man when manwas as free to exercise his own intelligence and make his own decisions"(Loo k, Sept. 24, 1963, p. 74).
Think of what thie means!
Just before the end of man's 6,000years of self -rule, the supreme lawGiver has allowed mankind to follow, admittedly on - an unparalleled scale, the way that seems so right to him. Theway your Bible plainly labels as theway that ends in death (Prov. 14 :12;16:25) .
We witness an unprecedented floodof human reasoning about moral codes. Is it any surprise that we should witness an unprecedented flood of sexualimmorality, murder, stealing, hatred, lying, and sins of every conceivable description?
No wonde r, if the world is ever to
22
have peace and happiness, that God theFather must soon send Jesus Christ backto this earth and fi ll it with the knowl edge of His laws! ( Isa. 2:2 -4.)
Th is is a lawless age . Look magazineadmitted: "No single autho rity rulesour conduct. No church lays down themoral law for all; no tribal customs andtaboos define the limits of our immoralit ies. W e are free to be prejudiced orpromiscuous, to cheat or chisel. We arcleft floundering in a money-motivated,sex-obsessed, big-city-dominated socie ty. We must figure out fo r ourselveshow to apply the traditional moralprinciples to the prob lems of our times. Many find this burden too heavy."
Yes, many find this burden tooheavy because they, like the alchemistsof a few centuries ago, are lost in amaze of human ideas and humanreasonings. God has been left out ofthe picture. God has allowed this tohappen to teach man that man's waysare wrong ( Prov , 14 :12; 16:25).
When God's W ord is not read andheeded, a "money-motivated, sex-obsessed, big-city-dominated society" isthe natural result. That is the end result of man going man's way !
It's time you were willing to giveup your human ideas, your op inions, your way of do ing things, and be givenwisdom by the One who promises ahappy, abundant life! The choice isyours. No one can make it for you.No one is going to fo rce you to behappy.
But the ,,'ay to happiness is freelymade available by a loving Creator toall those who will turn from thei r evil
ways, accept Jesus Christ as personalSavior, and follow His laws.
How G od 's Laws G ive
Freedom
God's laws are not a straitjacket.
They do not forb id even one singleth ing that will add lasting enjoymentor real joy to one 's life,
In fact, H is laws offer human ity themaximwn oppo rtunity for character de
velopment and personality growth. Theworld offers only the terrible penaltythat comes from breaking them! Thevery way in which the Ten Comm and-
The PLAIN TRUTH
merits are stated reveals this importantfact.
Many think God's laws are negativebecause some of them begin : "Thoushalt not." This is a wrong conception. The "Thou shalt not" in His laws tellsus how to avoid the wallop of sin. They are no more negative than "Thoushalt not jump off the cliff,"
By avoiding sin, which always bringson a penalty sooner or later, God givesus complete freedom to develop character in every way that will be construetive both to us and to others.
His laws emphasize the points we bynature would break: the way that seemsso right to us, yet brings on problemslater.
Let' s use a physical analogy to unde rstand. Man discovers how to refine P'"troleum and make gaso line . The lawsays: "Thou shalt not light a matchover an open can of gasoline." Is that anegative law because it denies the person the right to blow himself up ? No , Idon't think you would agree with that!
The same principle is true withGod's laws. Most of the Ten Commandments warn us what not to do.They warn us how to stay out oftrouble, how to keep well, how to avoidpain, heartache, and grief. God's lawshelp us avoid what is bad for us. But,at the same time, they open broadavenues to constructive thinking andplanni ng withi n their bounds .
D id man stop making gasoline because he can put it to a wrong use andharm himself? Should men rebelagainst God's laws because they pointout what to avoid?
Just as a loving parent warns hischildren not to play with fire, Godwarns humanity not to dabble withthose situations that will scar his char
acter and keep him from enjoying abounteous life.
In this age of the "new morality,"and "free love ," God warns: "Can a
man take fire in his bosom, and hisclothes not be burned? Can one goupon hot coals, and his feet not beburned? So he that goeth in to hisneighbor's wife: whosoever touchethher shall not be innocent" (Prov. 6 :27
29) .
June, 1965
Notice how God directly likens H isspiritual law concerning adultery to thephysical law governing fi re. The re is aright and wrong use of sex, just asthere is a right and wrong use of fire .It's all made plain in Mr. Armstrong'svital book God Speaks 0111 0 11 'T heS ew Afora/it)'."
What's wrong with having the insight God 's laws give so one can avoidsuffering and headache?
If a man learns the laws of chemistry, physics, biology, farming, etc., andrightly applies them , he can be productive. The increase of mechanical know how in this modern age was not possible until man began to obey the lawsthat govern this physical creation. Inthe same way, a "break-through" in
human emotional and moral problemswill not result until man conforms toGod's laws that govern our minds .
These laws are God 's Ten Command
ments. Th ey are spiritual laws andthey gove rn our minds (Rom. 7: 14).
God does nothing without a purpose.Th ere is a great purpose for human
existence.
God sent H is Son into the world to
give everyone a reason for living. Notonly in this life, but forever as a partof His very own fami ly!
Through Christ our sins can be corn
pletely forgiven. Through God's Spirit,His power , we can overcome our nat
ural desi res and begin to live the abundant life that God intended from the
very beginning.

Have you eyer noticed the examplesof Paul in the New Testament ? Theyexplain how the Work of God shouldbe financed today .
Almost everyone knows that Paulpreached in city after city over themain traveled Imperial Highway whichextended for more than a thousandmiles over plains , mountains and seas. But what they do not realize is thatPaul and his co-workers often had toshoulder great financial burdens injourneying by ship (Acts 20:15; 16:11and 21:2) .
It cost money in those days to rentpassage on board boat. In one instancePaul had to rent a private schoo l housefrom Tyrannus (Acts 19: 9) . While inthe capital city of Rome, he hired hisown hall (Acts 28:30) .
He also wrote to Timothy, in one ofhis letters, to bring the books andparchments that he had left behind( II Tim. 4 :13) . Books, laboriouslyhand-copied in those days, cost a greatdeal of money-the same as do reosearch books today.
By what means did Paul have enoughto pay the expense of carrying thegospe l? How we re his trips fin anced, and those of his numerous staff whowere sent by him to spread the gospeland to care for the many localchurches ?
T he Problem Paul Faced
When arriving at the city of Corinth,in Greece, Paul found he had to workweek days (Acts 18: 3, 4) . The Corinthians-indeed, the inhabitants of theentire surrounding province - weremoney conscious as theirs was a greattrading and shipping center. The people didn't see much need in diligentwork when sufficient money could beeasily gained through lucrative trading.Paul knew that to carry the gospel tothem, he could not mention his ownpersonal expenses nor the expense ofthe work.
Paul later told the Ephesians abouthis trials: "Yes, you yourselves know,
The PLAIN TRUTH
that these hands have ministered to mynecessities, and to them that we re withme" (Acts 20 :34) .
Notice that Paul had to labor for hisown necessities and those of othersamong the Corinthians. He was oftenhungry and destitute ( II Cor. 11:27) ,despite taking hours out of his sleepin order that his own personal needswould not be chargeable to the Coriothians. Paul actually had to take timef rom preaching the gospel to care forhis personal needs in order not to giveoffense to those selfish Greeks.
But how did the apostle supply theex penses of preaching the gospel, ofrenting halls, and of journeying toneighboring cities?
Notice II Corinthians 11:7·9 : "HaveI committed an offense in abasing myself ... because I have preached to youthe gospel of God freely' I robbedother cbnrcbes, taking wages of them,to do )'011 service. And when I waspresent with you, and wanted, I waschargeable to no man : for that whichwas lacking to me the brethren whichcame from Macedonia wpp/ied,J!
It was the duty of God's people whohave their hearts in God's W ork to seethat the monetary needs for the spreading of the gospel were supplied. Paulcommended the Philippians for per·fo rming their part in the ministry(Phil. 4: 15·16) .
But how did the Philippians andothers raise the funds? D id Paul orderthem to resort to socials, oyster suppers, bingo games ?
God's Principle Made Plain
Notice how God intends His Workto be financed. Not once in all theBible are the usual methods of socials, suppers, games, begging from door todoor mentioned as God's way of financing His Work . But Scripture doestell us the right way it ought to bedone.
First, turn to the ninth chapter ofI Corinthians. Th is entire chapter isdevoted to one particular subject. Paulis proving to the Corinthians that TH E
LAW OF G OD gave him authority to receive material things because of hisspiritual duties. Note how emphatic heis: "Or I only and Barnabas, have wenot power to forbear working? Who
June, 1965
goes to war any time at his own expense? . . . Say I these things as a man?or says not the law the same also? . .If we have sown to you spiritual things,is it a great thing if we shall reap yourcarnal things? If others be partakers ofthis allthority oyer you, are not werather? Nevertheless , we have not usedthis power; but suffer all things, lestwe should hinder the gospel of Christ"(verses 6 through 12) .
But what law ?Few seem to understand today. But
there it is- right in your Bible!Paul is proving by the law of God
that God's Work ought to be financed God's way! He told the carnalCorinthians it would have hindered thegospel more to have made it fullyknown to them than to take precioustime out of the gospel in which tolabor for his own necessities . Paul hadto ask other brethren, those who werereally converted, to supply the money to'cover the mounting costs of preachingthe gospel to the Corinthians.
Even though Paul said, "The Lordordained that they which preach thegospel should live of the gospel;" yethe repeated, "1 have used none of thesethings: neither have I written thesethings, that it should be so done tome." (I Cor. 9 :14-15.)
Now the important question is this :since Paul refers to the LAW as proofthat he had autbority, what was thesystem, ordained by the law, which theNew Testament Church followed? It isthat same law which God ordains thatwe are to follow today!
God 's Answer Revealed
Paul has already shown us the principie of the law in I Corinthians 9 :9.There is no New Testament examplefor the customary methods of raisingfunds by socials, bazaars and games. What we do find is a law which regulates how God's Work is conducted. Itis explained in the seventh chapter ofHebrews. Jesus Christ, wrote Paul inHebrews, is now 0 " 1' High Priest, afterthe order of Melchisedec. The Leviticalpriesthood is no longer God's direct instrument under the new covenant-theMelchisedec priesthood has been reestablished. The rights of the Melchisedec priesthood are Christ's and His

Should a Non-Christian Tithe?New Testament ministry. One of thoserights was the authority to receivetithes! (Heb. 7:4.) Abraham paidtithes to Melchisedec, long beforeMoses.
When God ordained the materialpriesthood of Levi in the days ofMoses, the principle of tithing wascontinued by the law: ".. . they that areof the sons of Levi, who receive theoffice of the priesthood, have a com
mandment to take tithes of the peopleaccording to the law" (verse 5) .
Now notice what occurred with thereestablishment of the spiritual priesthood under Christ. "For the priesthoodbeing changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the lau!' (verse12). So there is a change in the law,not an abolition of the law as manyfalsely argue. Those rights which originally belonged to the Melchisedecpriesthood-one of which was theright to take tithes-and which weretransferred in Moses' day to the Levites, are now restored to the true priesthoodof which Christ is High Priest. Godordained that His ministry today receivethe tithes of His people in order thatthe Work of carrying the true gospel toall the world may be accomplished.
That is how God maintained Paul'swork. He is using this same methodtoday in spreading the good news ofthe Kingdom of God ! This is howthousands of you receive freely themagazines and the booklets, and hearthe broadcasts daily-because otherswho understand God's principle andHis LAW are paying God His tithesand giving of their offerings.
This is God's Work. He is in it. Itis a Work of FAITH, based on the abosolute assurance that He will provideevery need without ever having to askthe world for a penny!

Due to our negle ct of God' s lawswe have had a great loss come uponU5. On the morning of January 20,we got up to the sight of our barnin flames. We know this loss wasa spiritual lesson because we badneglected to tithe regularly and neglected to send in offeri ngs on giftsgiven to us. God was merciful. however, in letting us have our home forif the wind had blown in the oppositedirection, our borne would have beenlost. How SOLID is the ROCKof GIBRALTAR?
What's happening to Great Britain? In a few short decades, the proud might of the British Empire has dwindled enorm ously! Like toppling tenpins, Britain has lost India, her EastAfrican colonies, Ceylon, Suez, the Sudan. Is Gibraltar next?
Madrid, Spain
T HE historic "Rock" may not besuch an impregnable fortress after all.
Standing athwart the approaches tothe Mediterranean Sea like a sleepinglion, the Rock of Gibraltar has symbolized the power and strength of theBritish Empire for as long as anyonecan remember.
The maze of labyrinths, tunnels, storage vaults, ammunition dumps, sleeping quarters, and hidden guns thatmake up the honeycombed fortress hasbeen a symbol of British prestige andpower since it was captured from Spainin 1704.
But the big rock has an Achilles'heel-and Franco's Spain seems to havefound it.

Gibraltar , only two and three quarters miles in length and three quartersof a mile wide, is jam-packed withactivity--every square inch of spacedoing useful work.
A hustling , bustling, British fortress

Harassments from Behind
Now Gibraltar is being threatenedfrom behind-and increasing pressurefrom Generalissimo Francisco Franco indicates he still hopes to get Gibraltarfor his own , some day.
Like the U. S. Navy base at Guantanarna in Cuba, the "Rock's" Achilles'heel is its fresh water supply! Talkis in the air now of a possible blockadeby Spain, in addition to economic sanetions and other harassments, involvingSpanish workers. Spain could also cutoff the free movement of tourists acrossthe Spanish mainland and over the"neutral ground" into Gibraltar.
Already, Spain has or-dered the searching ofSpanish workers at thefrontier and the evictionof 450 workers from aSpanish town. It is expected by officials onthe Rock that Generalissimo Franco will concentrate further on theweak link in Gibraltar's social and economic system. That weak

purely economic or military considerations is the really GREAT meaning of
what Gibraltar represents to the British

But Gibraltar as a SYMBOL is dramatically VITAL to the British people. It is asymbol of PRIDE, and a symbol of

Anciently, God made specific promisesto Abraham and his seed which havelong since been fulfilled to the British
and American people. He prophesied, ".. . in blessing I will
bless thee, and in multiplying I will
multiply thy seed as the stars of theheaven, and as the sand which is upon
the sea shore; and THY SEED SHALLPOSSESS THE GATE OF HIS ENEMIES"
(Gen. 22 :17) .Skeptics and doubters of God's Word
argue this remarkable prophecy refersonly to Christ! They say Christ some

dead, or when He ascended into heaven.
But read further! The parents ofRebekah, when she had been selected tobecome the wife of Isaac, were inspiredto say, "Thou art our sister, be thouthe mother of thousands of millions, and LET THY SEED POSSESS THE GATE
OF THOSE WHICH HATE THEM" (Gen.24:60). Yes, "THEM," not "Him."
The apostle Paul explained the duality of the prophecies concerning theseed of Abraham when he mentioned
that ONE seed which was CHRIST, andin whom all nations would be blessed
(Gal. 3:16) , but that ONE Seed, whichwas Christ did not fulfill the racial,NATIONAL blessings of thousands of

1779, the last attempt was made forrecovery of Gibraltar by the Spanish. It was besieged for four years ! Butagain, British tenacity combined withthe impregnable fortificat ions of thegreat Rock withstood attack. From thattime to this, the Rock of Gibraltar hasbeen continually strengthened until itknows no parallel anywhere on earth.
Inside, in corridors cut from 40- , 50·and 60-foot·thick limestone layers, aregalleries two, three and more miles inlength- wide enough to permit passageof large vehicles.

Barracks, signal stations, supply depots, hospital facilities, everythingnecessary for a complete CITY, and allimide a hllge rock-THIS is Gibraltar.symbol of British impertu rbability, theseal of stubbornness, the pride of Britain's power!
But Gibraltar is destined to fallN OT in glorious and heroic defenseafter a famous siege-but in utter ignominy. In useless and helpless sacrificein disgrace and shame.
A Responsibilityfor Every Blessing
Whether we like to believe it or not-GOD ALMIGHTY gave Gibraltar toBritain. And He fully intended sheKEEP it.
But the British and American peoplehave forgot/ell their God. They reallydon't know WHERE He is, don't knowWHO He is, don't know IF He is! Andwe are not obeying His immutableLAWS !
God Almighty said, "And it shallcome to pass, if thou shalt hearkendiligently unto the voice of the Eternalthy God, to oberve and to do all Hiscommandments which I command theethis day, that the Eternal thy God willset thee on high above all nations ofthe earth : and all these BLESSINGSshall come on thee, and overtake thee,IF thou shalt hearken unto the voice ofthe Eternal thy God .. ." (Deut.28 :1·2) .
Yes,- IF! The "biggest little word"in the English, or any other, language!
Then followed a chronicle of the
ama, and Gibraltar.Gibraltar was first captured by the
British in 1704, during the war ofSpanish Succession. It successfully withstood a Spanish siege from October1704 until April 1705, and was securedto Britain by the Peace of Utrecht in1713 .
From that time to this, the greatRock has undergone siege after siegeand always remained solidly in Britishhands. After the Peace of Utrecht, theBritish spared no cost or effort to renoder the fortress impregnable. Again, the Spanish attempted to conquer the"rock" by siege--commencing on the7th of March, 1727. But after AdmiralWager approached with 11 Britishships of the line, the Spanish lifted thesiege, and attempted to BUY Gibraltar, with the fantastic offer of TWO MILLION POUNDS STERLING (this was1727) . The British disdained the offe r.
Still , the Spanish kept trying. In thewar between Britain and Spain in

And all this is only the beginning. The most obvious sea gates of all areSuez ( now lost to British contro l), Pan-

CHAPTER EIGHTY
"THE ARK OF GOD IS TAKEN!"
ONE night young Samuel, who was sleeping in a room adjacent to Eli's near the
tabernacle, heard a voice calling his name. Thinking that Eli, the high priest, had
summoned him, he hurried to Eli's quarters. The high priest told Samuel he didn't
call him. The same thing happened a little later, and again Eli told him that he
hadn't called, (I Samuel 3:1-6,)
A Call From God
After Samuel returned to his bed he heard the voice speak his name for the third
time, He hesitated to bother the high priest again, but there was just the chance that
this third call had come from the increasingly helpless old man. So for the third
time he went to Eli's quarters and timidly asked if he could be of service.
Eli slowly sat up and peered through the gloom at the boy, who was fearful
that he would be rebuked.
"If you heard someone speaking your name, it wasn't I," Eli muttered thought
fully. "What was the voice like?"
"The first time it sounded a long way off," Samuel explained. "The second time
it seemed closer. The last time, just a couple of minutes ago, it sounded closer yet,
• as though it came from everywhere!"
Eli sat in silence for a few moments. He realized that an awesome thing was
taking place. He was certain because this thing had happened to him in the past.
For some purpose God was speaking to Samuel! (I Samuel 3:7-8.)
To Eli this was a snub from God, inasmuch as the high priest was the one to
\
34 The PLAIN TRUTH
whom the Creator usually spoke unless there was a leader in Israel who was un
usually close to God. Eli understood why God had chosen to contact another, even
one who was only a child. It was because of the careless manner in which he, Eli,
had conducted matters at the tabernacle.
"Go back to your bed, my son," the high priest sighed. " If the voice comes to
you again, be sure to answer, 'I hear you, Lord! Please tell me why you are callingme.' ..
This instruction was puzzling to Samuel. He obediently went back to bed, but he
didn't sleep because of being so curious and excited by what the high priest had told
him to do about the mysterious voice. He was so keyed up that when he distinctly
and closely heard his name pronounced again, he almost forgot what he had been
told to answer.
"Y-yes, Lord !" he stammered, not really knowing whom he was answering. "I'm
listening!" (I Samuel 3:9-10.)
"Do not be fearful ," the voice went on. " I am the God of Israel, here to inform
you of some important things."
Samuel was greatly startled to learn that God was speaking to him. But some
how he became at ease as the seconds passed. He listened intently as the voice con
tinued to come to him out of the night.
"I am going to cause some very unhappy events in Israel. If I were to announce
to all the people what I shall do, their ears would tingle with the dread words. First
I shall bring judgment against the family of Eli. Even though you are yet very young,
you should know that your high priest has been offensively careless in his high of
fice. He has allowed his sons to do some very vile things. The sins of all three have
been so great that no sacrifice or offering can atone for them. Because of their dis
obedience, the lives of these people will violently end at a time I shall soon choose,"
(I Samuel 3:11-14.)A Very Unpleasant Duty
Samuel was stunned by what he had heard . He had never been aware of Eli or
his two sons doing anything wrong. To be informed that his superiors had displeased
the God they served was a shock to him. There was little sleep for him the rest
of the night.
Next morning he got up as usual to open the entrance to the tabernacle.
With the coming of dawn, the event of the night before became to him as a
strong dream he almost wanted to forget. He had no intention of revealing it to
anyone, but when Eli called him later to talk to him, he was fearful that he was

going to be asked to give an account. It isn't always pleasant to be a prophet.
"I know and now you surely know that it was God who spoke to you last night,"
the high priest told Samuel. "He must have called you again after the third time I
told you to go back to bed. He must have had some message for you. I want you to
tell me everything that He told you. Don 't hold anything back, or God might deal
even more harshly with you than He would deal with me if I were to disobey."
Frightened by these words, Samuel related all that God had spoken. When Eli
heard what God had to say about him and his sons, he almost regretted questioning
Samuel. He bowed his head and stared submissively at the ground.
"If it's God's will ," he murmured, " then it will surely happen the way He has
planned it." (I Samuel 3:~5-18.)
God hadn't revealed just when these things would happen. For the next several
years Eli was in a state of fearful uncertainty for himself and his sons. Meanwhile,
Samuel grew up to become a well-known young man. All of Israel knew him as one
whom God had chosen as a prophet. Samuel didn 't ask to be made a prophet: God
chose him. He increased greatly in wisdom and intelligence , and foretold events that
came true with startling accuracy because God continued to speak to him from time
to time. (I Samuel 3: 19-21.)
The leaders of Philistia , the coastal nation that had for several years lorded it
over Israel, meanwhile had received increasing reports of the rising young leader at
Shiloh. Fearing that Israel might be organizing a rebellion against them, they sent out
an army to march among the Israelites and remind them that it would be foolish to
rise against the Philistines.
When it was reported that a Philistine army was moving into an area about
twenty-five miles west of Shiloh, the elders of Israel quickly formed a fighting
force that moved swiftly to within a few miles north of where the enemy stopped
to camp.
When the Philistines learned of the presence of the army of Israel, they decided
to attack before the Israelite soldiers could become greater in number. The Bible
doesn't state how many troops were in each army, though there were pro?ably at
least forty or fifty thousand on either side. Whatever the numbers , when the en
counter was over and each side had withdrawn from the battlefield, the Israelite
army went back to its camp with about four thousand less soldiers. (I Samuel 4:1-2.)
No Help for the Wicked!
The leaders were stunned by this defeat. They felt that their forces weren 't
meant to lose because they were part of God 's chosen people! They seemed to have

forgotten that Israel was chosen for an example of obedience, not for special favors.
What with most of Israel being in a state of disobedience, the leaders had no sound
reason to expect victory.
Nevertheless, some of the elders came to the camp with an idea they thought
would insure the Israelites' winning any other encounter with the Philistines.
"We should have the ark with us," they suggested. "Our ancestors took it with
them in times of war, They had it with them when they went against Jericho, and the
whole city fell. God wouldn't let anything happen to the ark, and he would have
to spare us to keep the ark safe!"
This stratagem was vigorously acclaimed by the troops. Men were sent at
once to Shiloh to bring the ark to the camp with all possible haste so that it would
be on hand in the event the Philistines attacked again.
When the soldiers arrived at the tabernacle to request the ark, Eli was greatly
troubled. He felt that it would be a grave mistake for a sinful nation to rely on the
presence of the ark as a kind of fetish to insure safety in battle.
"I think the ark should remain in the tabernacle," Eli resolutely informed the
men. "I can hardly agree to your taking it!"
Having been awakened because of this matter , the old priest shuffled back to
his bed, leaving a group of very disappointed men,

June, 1965 The PLAIN TRUTH
Next morning young Samuel went as usual to open the gates of the tabernacle.
To his surprise they were already open. After trying in vain to find Phinehas
and Hophni, he awakened Eli to tell him that his sons weren't on duty. The
sightless old man groped into the tabernacle, thinking that they might be there. They were gone!
When he came back out, he was pale and shaking.
"They have unwisely taken the ark!" he muttered to Samuel. "God will not
deal lightly with those who have done this awful thing!"
When the ark arrived at the camp of the Israelite army, along with Hophni and
Phinehas, a thunderous cheer went up from the waiting soldiers. The shouting was
so loud that it was plainly heard in the Philistine camp a few miles to the south.
Alarmed officers feared that it meant that powerful reinforcements had arrived for
Israel. (I Samuel 4: 3-5.)
"We should have attacked again instead of retiring," some of them bitterly
observed. "Now it may be too late for another victory."
A little later they learned from spies just what had caused the Israelites to cheer
so wildly.
"The God of Israel has come into the camp of the enemy!" the spies excitedly
declared. "W e learned that He is in a box, and that this box was brought from Shi
loh tonight! The enemy troops were so pleased to learn that their God had come to
help them that they shouted like madmen with glee!"
"I have heard of that mysterious box," a Philistine officer said. "It is said to
be the dwelling place of a powerful God-the one who long ago brought some
horrible plagues on Egypt so that the Israelites could escape!"
"I have heard that when the God of Israel is angered, He is more powerful
than any other god," another Philistine added. "If that is true, we might be wise to
return to our country."
Fear Turned to Courage
The superstitious Philistines, filled with growing fear and futility, were on the
verge of agreeing to give up their war on Israel. Then one of the leading officers
demanded to be heard .
"We brought our army here for a purpose!" he shouted angrily. "Now what
is all this cowardly talk about running back to our homes? Why are we imagining
that we are destined to lose to Israel ? We are strong, and we must use that strength
to make certain that the Israelites continue to be servants to us. If we give in, we

This short speech was so inspiring to the Philistines that they decided to set
out even before dawn for Israel's camp. The Israelites were depending on the ark
to keep them safe, and weren't as prepared as they should have been, The Philis
tines suddenly swarmed in among them with such savage force that within minutes
the ground was strewn with dead and dying Israelites. Many were trapped in their
own tents. Others who were out in the open foolishly tried to escape by dashing
into their shelters. The shouts, the screams of pain, the clashing of metal against
metal produced more noise than had gone up from the cheering men only a few
hours previously.
On slashing into one of the larger tents, Philistine soldiers came upon two men
crouching close to a large box-shaped object covered with a fancy cloth. Spears hurtled
into the two men, killing them at once. The Philistine soldiers had no way of know
ing that they had just put to death two priests of Israel-Phinehas and Hophni. They
strode toward the covered object to see what it was. (I Samuel 4:10-11.)
"Don't touch that !" one of the soldiers barked. "That must be the box where
Israel's God dwells!"
The soldiers froze In their tracks, then backed off a few steps.

"Why should we be afraid of that thing?" another soldier muttered. "It didn't
keep us from killing these two fellows who must have been here to guard it!"
Anxious to show his courage, the soldier stepped up and touched one of the
poles by which the ark was carried.
"See?" he triumphantly asked. "Let's take this to our commander. We'll receive
some special favors for being the ones to capture the God of the Israelites!"
By that time the fighting was over. The only Israelites in the camp were dead
or wounded. All others, and that didn't include very many, were either fleeing or
hiding.
Israel had been defeated to the amount of thirty thousand dead soldiers' If there
had been obedience to God instead of reliance on the ark, matters would have turned
out differently. (Leviticus 26:3-8.)
The Tragic Result of Sin !
Killing thirty thousand Israelites was a great triumph to the Philistines. But, in
a way, the capture of the ark was even a greater one, inasmuch as many of them really
believed they had captured a god. The ark was taken to their camp, where a noisy
celebration took place. There was great curiosity and speculation as to what was in
side the object, but somehow no one dared to try to open it. Most of the Philistine
soldiers, having heard wild rumors about the ark, chose to stay away from it. They
were superstitious.
A few hours later a tattered Benjamite soldier who had escaped from the Philis
tines staggered wearily into the main streets of Shiloh.
"Our army has been wiped out!" he shouted as he scooped up a handful of
dirt and tossed it on his head. (I Samuel 4:12.)
As the bad news spread through town the people began groaning and shrieking.
The depressed high priest, sitting at his usual outdoor place where the people could
easily contact him, wondered at the cause of the noise. It was then that the exhausted
Benjamite trudged up to him to announce that he had run all the way from the Is
raelite camp to bring news.
Trembling, Eli anxiously asked what had happened.
"The Philistines attacked our camp this morning," the Benjamite muttered
hoarsely. "Only a small part of us escaped. The rest are dead, including your two
sons. They died when the ark was captured."
This was too much for the old priest. He knew that when God removed His
protection from Israel and let the ark be taken, He had forsaken His people. Eli

today? WHY have they lost hope, WHYdo they fail to impart to students thereal PURPOSE and the true MEANINGof life? WHY do they instill only FALSE
The PLAIN TRUTH
VALUES? They teach students how toearn a living in the professions, thearts or the sciences or the technologies. But WHY do they fail to teach students HOW TO LIVE?
WHY are they unable to teach humanity how to have WORLD PEACE ?WHY do they fail to prepare 18through z-t-year-old students for a happy life in marriage-how to train andrear happy children-how to build ahappy home and family life? WHY dothey fail to teach the laws of health, and the prevention of sickness anddisease?
WHY, as a consequence, do we havea raging increase in divorces, brokenhomes, juvenile delinquency, crime andviolence, sickness and disease, neurosesand mental disturbances?
It is a TRUTH little realized that inthis world's education there is perpetuation of FALSE VALUES, the teaching ofdistorted history, warped psychology, perverted arts and sciences, fables represented as knowledge.
In one vital respect, the Eternal Godlabels the deceived and misled victimsof this system as more ignorant thanthe dumb animals-for the so-callededucated of this world have lost theknowledge of their Maker! They arethe descendents and successors of ancient Israel, and of them the Eternalsays: "Hear, 0 Heavens, and give ear,a earth: for the Lord hath spoken, Ihave nourished and brought up children , and they have rebelled againstme. The ox knoweth his owner, andthe ass his master's crib: but Israel dothnot know, my people doth not consider.Ah sinful nation, a people laden withiniquity, a seed of evildoers, childrenthat are corrupters : they have forsakenthe Lord, they have provoked the HolyOne of Israel unto anger, they are goneaway backward" (Isa. 1:2·4) .
What a paradox! W here once the"educated" called themselves "gnostics.'meaning "we know," today they arelargely "agnostics," meaning "we don'tknow- we are IGNORANT." Today theysay there are no absolutes. They neverspeak in positive language. They say:" I think" ; "We may well suppose";"We are coming to believe"; "Manyare of the opinion." To speak dog-

matically as one who positively knowsis regarded as intellectual heresy !
The existence of God-the revealedknowledge from God in the Bible-areregarded as foolishness. And yet Godsays that the "wisdom" of this worldis foo lishness! God says this world'seducators are without excuse. "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools," says God; and "they didnot like to retain GOD in their knowledge" (See Rom. 1:20-28).
It is true-and the whole world willknow in another short 15 years-thisworld's "education" has reached thestage of decadence, and it will soon beobsolete.
There are three colleges today thatare pioneering, recapturing the TRUEVALUES, building toward the revitalizededucational system of THE WORLD TOMORROW!
Students at the three AmbassadorColleges are taught the real PURPOSEand the true MEANING of life. They aretaught HOW TO LIVE! They acquireTRUE CULTURE. They are prepared forhappy marriages, happy homes, happyfamilies . They are prepared fo r successin life.
Ambassador students are happy students. They know how to smile, howto laugh. They radiate. They enjoy fun,and they also enjoy hard work and diligent study. They receive a broadenedand a balanced education. They aretaught to THINK-and to think aboutwhat they are doing while they aredoing it! They are taught to question,to research, to get the facts, and toPROVE what is true and what is false. They develop intellectual curiosity, andwith it intellectual honest)'. Their livesare interesting, exciting and richly rewarding.
But there are no Communists. Thereare no student demonstrations, massprotests or rebellion, or marches on thePresident's home. There is disciplineand there is government-the kind thatserves the welfare of the governed.
An astonishing percent of Arnbassador undergraduate students have previously earned degrees from other colleges or universities. They come to obtain the kind of education they failed toreceive before-a kind valuable as life

But we do have GOOD NEWS for Correspondence Course students!
Though Lessons One, Two, Th ree andso forth are being prepared for enrolling students in the illustrated form, other lessons are also being illustrated.Students who are up-to-date with themost advanced class have alread)· received Lesson 40 in the new illustratedstyle. uno Christians go to heavenwhen they die? What did Jesusmean when He said, ", .. greatis your reward in heaven" ?
The common assumption today isthat heaven is the reward of the saved.Yet most professing Christians havenever looked into the Bible to see whatIes«s said about the reward of thesaved.
What did Jesus mean when He toldHis disciples to rejoice when men persecute them, "and be exceeding glad:for great is )'ollr reward in heaven : forso persecuted they the prophets whichwere before you"? (Mat. 5:12.)
And why-only a few verses before---<!id Christ say, "Blessed are themeek: for they shall inherit the earth?"
Do some of the saved-"the perse~
cuted"-go to heaven to collect theirreward, while others-"the meek"inherit the earth? Or did Jesus Christcontradict Himself in His very nextbreath ?
CERTAINLY NOT.'Let the Bible itself explain the an
swer.Noti ce what t he apostle Peter was
inspired to write in your Bible:"Blessed be the God and Father of ourLord Jesus Christ, which according toHis abundant mercy hath begotten usagain unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, that fadeth not away, RE
SERVED IN HEAVEN for you" ( I Pet.1:3-4 ) .
Notice it ! The reward of the saved-
Queen Elizabeth Charms Germans
44
the inheritance of true Christians- isRESERVED in heaven. That is where itis kept at this present time. The reoward is reserved ill heaven-it is 1101
heaven itself! But do Christians go to heaven to
receive their reward? Jesus Christ explained it in the Book of Revelation :"And behold, I come quickly, and myreward IS WITH ME, to give every manaccording as his work shall be" (Rev.22:1 2) . When Christ returns fromheaven the second time He will bringthe reward of the saved with Him !Though now temporarily reserved In
heaven, Jesus will bring the reward tothis earth!
Jesus explained it further in theparable of the young nobleman whowent to a far country, to receive forhimself a kingdom, and to RET URN
(Luke 19 :12). Christ went up intoheaven to receive His Kingdom from theFather (Dan. 7 :13·14), and at the endof the present AGE He will RETUR N .
At His second coming He will returnto earth and REWA RD His true servantsaccording to how much they have overcome their sins and produced the fruitof obedience (Luke 19:13 -19) .
But what is included in the rewardof the saved?
For one thing, rulership over theearth ! When He returns Jesus will say"Well, thou good servant : because thouhast been faithful in a very little, havethou AUTHORITY over ten cities"(verses 17, 19) .
How clear! Jesus did not say Christians will inherit their reward IN heaven. Rather, the reward-authority, anoffice of power in the Kingdom ofGod-is being temporarily RESERVED
in heaven because that is where Jesus is.But it will be brought to the earth, where Jesus will reward His saints, inthe Kingdom of God, with positions ofRU LERSHIP and authority over the nations! Jesus said in His sample prayer:"Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done012 earth as it is in heaven."
Now read this: "And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto theend, to him will I give power over theNATIONS : And he shall rule them witha rod of iron . . ." (Rev. 2:26-27) .
The prophet Daniel was also inspiredto write, "And the kingdom and do-

Queen Elizabeth " reviews Germantroops.
DUsseldorf. West Germany
H W IL LK OM M EN KONIGIN ELiSABETH" read the banneras Elizabeth II, Queen of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland, stepped off her plane at the CologneBonn airport on May 18. It was to bea spectacular eleven-day state visit toWest Germany.
Not since the days of King EdwardVII, 52 years and two devastatingworld wars ago , had a reigning Britishmonarch set foo t on German soil. To theGerman hosts, it was to be the longestand most expensive state visit in theFederal Republic's history. To the British guests, listening with serious expression to the strains of the welcomi ng"Deutschland tiber Alles," history wasbeing rewritten. British officialdomwas here to forget the past. Here tomake friends with a longtime bitterenemy and to gain acceptance in theeyes of Continental Europeans.
The Germans Respond
"Germany will give the Queen andPrince Philip a welcome they have notexperienced even in a Commonwealthcountry" - prophesied the LondonDaily Mail optimistically already in1964. Yet, on her first day's visit ,Britain's Queen was received with whatsome newspapers described as "an al-
most English coolness" by the Germanpeople.
"The Queen will smile and applaud," commented Germany's QIJickcolumnist Matthias W alden. "That willdelight us Germans-but we will havereal joy only if we succeed in remainingstraightforward and modest without becoming humble. Smile back but don'tlose your gravity."
As if in obedience to a command, the German public refrained at firstfrom matching the Queen's welcomewith that which it had give n Generalde Gaulle or even President Kennedy."As the Queen and the Duke weredriven through Bonn for the first time, both they and the public looked skeptical," reported Stern, a German pictorial.
Alarmed at the absence of the publicovation over the Queen's arrival, theGerman press and television quickly began to urge the populace to show moreenthusiasm. The next day the cheeringhad duly increased. But, even so, whenthe Queen visited Dusseldorf on theeighth day of the tour the receptionconsisted mainly of curious stares andhalfhearted waving of flags.
The cause of this "belied silence"reasoned some newspapers, was foundin a recent poll showing that 89 percent of West Germans were suspiciousof "something political" behind HerMajesty's visit.
And indeed there was! Though theoretically built as a gesture of friendship, the carefully planned royal visit was ofutmost political and economic irnpor
tance.
The man who worked hard in preparing this was, strangely enough, noordinary British politician. He holds nopolitical office as such, has no directsay in matters concerning the government, and most often remains in thebackground overshadowed by the royalsplendor of his wife, the Queen. Wh owas he ?
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
and husband of the Queen ! He openedthe door to Germany. More than anyother member of the British establishment, this prince of German extractionfought a struggle against those powersin politics who wanted to prevent theQueen, at any cost, from setting foo t onGerman soil.
An Dphill Fight
It was an uphill fight all the way.Not only were the British people, inthe words of one English publisher,"More anti-German than any other nation of the NATO alliance." But fourof the Prince's own brothers-in-law hadsported swastika arm bands as officersof Adolf Hitler during World War II.It was no simple matter to cajole theslow-movi ng British gove rnment. D isplaying friendship toward the nationsthat a generation ago had besieged theembattled island with the blitz and"V" bombs from the skies and a Dboat blockade at sea? That was thetask.
Yet Prince Philip was persistent. Hemade private trips to Germany with hischildren, often took occasion to inspectBritish troops stationed there, and advised that British Royal Princes entering military service be stationed primarily with the British Army of theRhine. Working behind the scenes hepersuaded with the refinement of adiplomat, remaining at the same timeunnoticed by the press.
A real opening finally came whenWe st Germany's late President Heuss,in his 1958 trip to London, extendedthe Queen an invitation for a returnvisit to West Germany.
It had already become strongly apparent at that time that the husbandof the Queen had an unusual interestfor Anglo-German relations. The Britishmonarch had in times past harbored illusions about Anglo-German co-opera~
tion. But Prince Phil ip's ideas werestripped of all romanticism. He was
46
motivated by only one theme-themodernization of England in the era ofthe atom and the European Commo nMarket. "Most of all he was concernedby the crisis in the British economy.""There is no use in turning our eyes[upward] saying three times a day, after each meal, 'British is best,' andactually believing it."
The more he thought about England's cond ition , the stronger becamehis conviction that in this age of Common Ma rkets and tariff unions Englan dcould manage to survive only if shejoined the European Common Market.
On November 16, 1960 at an Ang loGerman society banquet he expressedwhat no member of the British RoyalHouse had dared to formu late fo r along time : Eng land's partnership withGermany and connect ion with Europe ."It must be clear to all that we must doexactly this if we are not to find our selves one day in the very undignifiedsituation, namely out in the cold. Prince Philip did not permit hiscritics to restra in him, instead he reminded the British government that theinvitat ion for the Queen to visit theFederal Republic was still open. It wasnow high time to travel.
The British government however didnot see the need fo r the Queen 's visitthen. For one thing, in 1960 Britainstill was considered great. Her futurehad not yet been darkened by theabortive attempt to ga in membership inthe Common Market. N ot unt il the accession of newly elected Prime MinisterHaro ld Wilson in 1964 did the government see the need fo r sendi ng theQueen on a state visit to Germany.

W hat is the real pur pose behind thepresent Royal visit to W est Ge rmany? From beginning to end it is designedto demonstrate to the Germans that theBritish Royal House is intimatelylinked by close family ties to the nobility of postwar Germany.
"For 60 years we have heard toomuch about things which separate us,"the Queen stated before embarking ona Rh ine cru ise at Kobl enz. "Let us endeavor now to think on that whichunites us." (Bunte- Illsstrierte, June 2,
[96 5.)And there is much which unites
Britain with Germany. Already in thefall of 1958 in the London receptionfor President Heuss the Queen stated," In the past there were many occasionswhen both our nations were closelyunited one with anothe r. Th e ties between my famil y and the old GermanStates go back for several generations."Much of Britain was shocked then atthe Queen's enthusiastic personal identif ication with Germany. That shockedindignation seemed now to have beensilenced by time and necessity. For ifthere is anyone thing stressed all alongthe route of the present Royal procession, it is the British Royalty'S ties towhat is left of German royalty.

Th e German press in turn ran seriesof articles on "Queen Elisabeth's German relatives," especially pointing outthat all of the British kings over thelast 250 years, with one exception, hadtaken German princesses as wives.
In spite of the initially cool reception, the Royal visit was meeting witha degree of success. France's President
. Charles de Gaulle has found it vital toh is grande alliance to jump into immediate action .
Enter: De Gaulle
Del'Spiegel, Germany's leading newsmagazine, states that in the eyes ofGenera l de Gau lle there is on ly onenation capable of landing Britain amembership in the Common MarketWest Germany. Obviously alarmed atthe Queen's influence, De Gau lle immediately dispatched his Foreign Minister, Couve-de Murvi lle, on a flyingtr ip to Bonn on May 24 with instruc tions to arrange for the French head ofstate 's proposed visit to Germany amonth ahead of schedule. Ori ginallyintending to hold French-Germa n unity ta lks in Bonn next July, General deGau lle speedi ly moved the date forwarda full month-to June II. Th e move isobviously designed to th wart any Influence the Queen's visit may have hadon Germany and to speed up h is intended French-dominated Franco-German partnersh ip. The purpose? Toblock once and for all Britain's intentio n of entering the Common Market .

seems obvious that England, throughthe person of Queen Elizabeth II, isplaying her highest card. If she shouldsucceed, the best she can hope for is ajunior partnership of uncertain duration with Germany. If she fails, Britainwill find herself, as Prince Philip fears, out in the cold-for good!

community have been nearly erased, permitting free trade over a vastly expanded market.
This same principle, say the Latineconomists, must be applied to Centraland South America. Restrictive tradewalls must be progressively lowered.Businessmen must learn to "think big,"to realize that all of Latin America istheir potential market, not just theirown individual countries.
The Man Behindthe Movement
The man who has sparked the comman market scheme for Latin Americais Chilean president Eduardo Frei (pronounced "fray") .
What inspires Frei in his planningare two factors:
First of all, he sees that a politicallysound, economically prosperous Chilecan exist only within an expandedLatin market. Chile has rich, but largely undeveloped, resources-iron ore, timber, fishing. But her own market forthese goods is too small. A greatly expanded free-trade zone throughout theentire Latin world, however, would dowonders for her industry- as weIl asfor the industries of every other state.
Secondly, Frei is impressed that theChileans have been whole-heartedly endorsing his economic reforms at home. The Christian Democrats scored a smashing victory in Chile's recent congressional elections. Communists werethoroughly trounced. Frei's "charismatic" appeal was just too much for them.He out-promised the Reds on everyfront-and what's more, he is beginning to deliver the goods, which issomething they can't do.
President Frei's tremendous popularity doesn't stop at Chile's borders ei-

ther. Reports the Los Angeles Times'George Natanson again: "What is evenworse, by Communist reckoning, isFrei's wildfire popularity. His conceptof 'revolution with freedom' has captured the imagination of workers andpeasants who are demanding social reforms-all over South Am erica-andthese are the very people the Communists are seeking to recruit."
Eduardo Frei is stealing the Red'sthunder!
Nucleus of Vast Market
Two embryonic beginnings of thevast market Frei envisions are alreadyon the scene. One of them is the Central American Common Market whichhas been immensely successful withinits rather limited area. The other is amuch looser trading bloc called theLatin American Free Trade Association, which has never really gotten off theground.
The CACM is composed of CostaRica, EI Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and N icaragua. Begun unceremoniously in 1961, the results have beenoutstanding so far. Trade among thefive small nations amounted to only 8million dollars in 1950 before theCommon Market was fanned. Last yearthe inter-zone trade approached 100million dollars. Over 98 percent of allproducts traded within the area nowpass customs duty-free.
The much larger Latin AmericanFree Trade Association, on the otherhand , has accomplished relatively littlesince its beginning in 1960. Its member nations-Argentina, Brazil, Chile,Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay,Peru, and Uruguay-have not beenwilling to negotiate lower tariffs on theproducts that really count.
Frei's idea is to first slice throughthe sluggish LAFTA red tape and reduce its trade barriers to CACM levelsas fast as possible. Then, when this isaccomplished, weld both the CACMand LAFTA together into a single, powerful economic bloc.
Political Too
The "Frei Plan," however, doesn'tstop with economic union. POLITICALUNITY is the ultimate goal. This is
47
what caught practically everybodyespecially the United States--<Jff guardwhen the proposal was publicly unveiledthis past April.
Again following the format of theEuropean Common Market, which hasas its final objective political unity,"The Frei Plan would provide ultimate.ly for a supra-national Latin-Americanparliament patterned somewhat afterthe Parliament of Parliaments createdby the European Common Market"(Francis B. Kent, L Oj Angeles Times,Apri l 21, 1965) .
The United States, which, along withCanada and Cuba, is not included in theunity scheme, has officially (and somewhat meekly) announced its "full support" of the proposal.
President Frei and the four economists whom he commissioned to drawup the proposal, are looking beyond theturbulent present, planning for the future. First, economic, then politicalunity. As Frei himself says, "The onlyreal possibility of Latin America finding its place in the world is throughthe integration of its countries."
Co-op erate With U. S.?
This vast economic system which iscertain to emerge-and your Bible hasa Jot to say about it as we shall seelater-will not be to U. S. liking.
Quite the contrary!Danger signals are already up for
u.S. businessmen who do extensivebusiness with the Central AmericanCommon Market. The rising externaltariff wall around the five-nation blocis rising steadily. This is making itdifficu lt for consumer goods producedoutside the area to surmount the barrier and compete with items producedwithin. For example, a 20-cent tariffis now slapped on each can of imported soup!
The Wall Street [ournal of March 10,1965, reports that the trend toward restrictive economic policies throughoutCentral and South America rrpromisesjharp repercussions for u.S. businessmen, who export more than $3 billionworth of goods a year south of theborder."

from-Latin America should be lost. But this is clearly the direct ion inwhich events are headed.
Enter: Europe
Astute Latin observers are aware ofthis trend also. Many sense that thismarch toward economic cohesion isstrengt hening their trade bargainingposition. They feel they will soon beable to do what they have long desired-to become less dependent upon the"Colossus of the North" and also GreatBritain.
Latin tradesmen in increased num bers are beginning to divert thei r energies toward solidifying trade with theother great Western industrial powerThe European Common Market. Andthe Europeans are responding with enthusiasm.
Notire this dispatch from the Christian Science Monitor of March 5,1965 : T here is taking place "A quietreoolntion in the Argentine meat exporttrade . The European Common Marketcountries are better off, and they arebuying more discriminatingly. Highquality beef is part icularly in demand. . . .

tomer. Last year it took double theBritish amount, which was approximately 140,000 tons of chilled beef.Practically all national sales effort isnow being confined to the Europeancontinent.
"Price is not the only factor motivating the Argentines. For decades theyhave been making it part of their political policy to be less dependent onthe British market. The official aim isexpressed as 'obtaining more spread.' ..

Europeans now see the advantage shifting to their side.
Continental industrialists are investing heavily in the Latin lands, tryingto secure footholds behind the risingwalls. Price differentials are also givingtheir goods the advantage over higherpriced American products. The LOJAngeles Times of May 18, 1965, reported :
"The United States' position as thelargest exporter of its goods to Honduras is being seriously threatened byother countries, an executive of thecountry's biggest private bank said hereMonday.
"The U. S. is losing its position ,mostly because of price structures, tosuch countr ies as lJ7est Germany, HoILand, Czecboslovaeie and Japan, saidFelix Lloveras Jr ., assistant manager ofBanco Atlantida, which is headquartered in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Hesaid that until 10 years ago Honduranimports had been almost exclusivelyfrom the United States."
Germa ns CapturingAu to Market
The German-based Volkswagen concern is tooling up to double its production over the next three years at itsplant outside Sao Paulo, BraziL "Webelieve in Brazil and we believe inLatin America," Friedrich W. SchultzWenk, boss of Volkswagen of Brazilrecently told the Los Angeles Times."Today we have 60 percent of theauto market here and we hope to getmore,'! he exclaimed. Volkswagen isalso in the process of constructing itssecond Latin American plant in Mexico.
Things are moving so rapid ly southof the border that the Central AmericanCommon Market recently sent a requestto its larger counterpart in Europe, seeking the establishment of a trademission there. The request was favorably received and is being strong lyconsidered. The five Centra l Americannations are able to bargain much moreeffectively as a single unit than as smallindividual countries .
De Gaulle Offers"Third Choice"
French President Charles de Gaulle, nemesis of the Anglo -Saxon powers,
June, 1965
boasted in his most recent press conference that he "supports Latin American efforts toward human liberationand organization." Observers werequick to point out that the word "liberation" connoted Latin ties to theUnited States. By "organization" DeGaulle obviously had in mind thetrend toward economic unification.
In early 1964 the pompous Frenchleader toured several Western Hemisphere countries and offered the Latinsa "third choice" between the Communist powers and the United States. Reported the Christian Science Monitor onhis visit: "While Latin America couldnot warm up to Castroism and the Alliance for Progress, they may embracewith enthus iasm the idea of an association with Western Europe . Culturally,Latin America may find great aff initieswith the Common Market nations, andthe prospect of a gigantic community ofinterests with 400 million people mayoffer a much greater appeal than thepresent difficult choice between theopposite political and economic systems represented by the United Statesand the Soviet Union."
Part of Babylonish System
Unwittingly, Latin America is beingroped into playing a major role in therevived Holy Roman Empire nowemerging out of the Common Market inEurope. It is a system which Godlabels as "Babylon the Great" in theseventeenth and eighteenth chapters ofthe Book of Revelation. In the corresponding Old Testament prophecies ofIsaiah 23 and Ezekiel 27 it appearsunder the name of the famous tradingcity of antiquity-T yre.
Few know that many inhabitants ofancient Tyre fled westward to Europe-especially Italy-after the collapse oftheir city-state. They left their waymark in the name "Tyrrhenian Sea"Sea of Tyre-which is located offItaly's western coast.
The Spanish-speaking peoples are also identified iu these prophetic chapters.
These prop hecies will be revealednext time. Don't fail to read in thenext issue what the Bible has foreto ldconcerning the Latin world J
