Call to Worship Dr. Bailey

One: Drawn by the Spirit into the presence of God, we rejoice. Many: We delight in the opportunity to reset our priorities this week. One: Seeking to attend to the call of Jesus Christ, we listen: Many: for the Voice who calls us to worship God and humbly serve others. One: By the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, we speak: Many: proclaiming God's love and invitation by the way we speak, bear witness and act.

One: Let us worship God.

Opening Prayer Dr. Bailey

Hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore You VU#232

Joyful, joyful, we adore you, God of glory, life and love;

hearts unfold like flowers before you, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive our fear and doubt away;

giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

Page 4: Trust in God · wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally,

All your works with joy surround you, earth and heaven reflect your rays, stars and angels sing around you,

center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain,

flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain,

sound their praise eternally.

You are giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!

Source of grace and fount of blessing, let your light upon us shine;

teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began;

God's own love is reigning o'er us, joining people hand in hand.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music lifts us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Call to Reconciliation Rev. Limongi

Let’s be honest: we know what we should do, yet too often we don't. We know the words people need to hear, but at times we are guilty of uttering the ones that hurt them. Yet, we also know that if we confess our failings to God, God has promised to forgive and guide. Let us join together in prayer, saying:

Page 5: Trust in God · wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally,

Confessing Together

Gracious God of glory: so many of us are stressed and getting so worn out we forget your promises of presence and strength for each moment. On edge, we sometimes lose our temper, our focus on what is good and healthy, and our reliance of the faith that sustains us. God we are sorry. We need your help. Grant us the humility and wisdom to ask for it and once received, to put it into practice. Forgive us when we doubt your love and your power to sustain and guide us. Be pleased to fill us with the wisdom to resist evil in our lives. Please strengthen us in obedience and in that faith which is given to us through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

Silence Words of Forgiveness Rev. Limongi Choral Response: Halle, halle, halle (sing twice)

Hymn I Need Thee Every Hour VU#671

I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord;

no tender voice like thine can peace afford.

Refrain: I need thee, O I need thee;

every hour I need thee! O bless me now, my Savior,

I come to thee.

I need thee every hour, stay thou nearby;

temptations lose their power when thou art nigh. [Refrain]

I need thee every hour, in joy or pain;

come quickly, and abide, or life is vain. [Refrain]

WE LISTEN FOR THE WORD OF GOD

First Scripture Lesson I Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11

Rachel and Elliot Van Staalduinen

Responsive Reading: Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35 Rev. Limongi

One: Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee before him. Many: As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, let the wicked perish before God. One: But let the righteous be joyful; let them exult before God; let them be jubilant with joy.

Many: Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds; his name is the Lord—be exultant before him.

One: Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. Many: God gives the desolate a home to live in; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious live in a parched land.

One: O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, Many: the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, at the presence of God, the God of Israel. One: Rain in abundance, O God, you showered abroad; you restored your heritage when it languished; Many: your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.

One: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; sing praises to the Lord, Many: O rider in the heavens, the ancient heavens; listen, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. One: Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel; and whose power is in the skies.

Page 7: Trust in God · wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally,

Many: Awesome is God in his sanctuary, the God of Israel; he gives power and strength to his people.

Blessed be God!

AND WE GO FORTH TO STEWARD GOD’S MISSION

Hymn When Pain of the World VU#598

When pain of the world surrounds us with darkness and despair,

when searching just confounds us with false hopes everywhere,

when lives are starved for meaning and destiny is bare,

we are called to follow Jesus and let God's healing flow through us.

We see with fear and trembling

our aching world in need, confessing to each other

our wastefulness and greed. May we with steadfast caring

the hungry children feed. We are called to follow Jesus

and let God's justice flow through us.

The church is a holy vessel the living waters fill

to nourish all its people, God's purpose to fulfill.

May we with humble courage be open to God's will.

We are called to follow Jesus and let God's spirit flow through us.

We praise you for our journey

and your abundant grace, your saving word that guided

a struggling human race. O God, with all creation, your future we embrace.

We are called to follow Jesus and let God's changes flow through us.

God be with you till we meet again; keep love’s banner floating o’er you,

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet; till we meet, till we meet,

God be with you till we meet again.

As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally, this exhortation is accompanied by God’s promise to be with us. God being with us inspires and empowers us to be ‘with’ each other. We do this by praying for one another and reaching out by phone, facetime, Facebook, email, WhatsApp…you name it. Let’s just stay connected. We send love and wish everyone comfort and good health, and look forward to hearing from you. May God bless us all.

The June 2020 edition of The Messenger will be published and

distributed during the last week of May. Please note that the deadline

for submissions is Sunday 24 May. It is your photos and articles that

make The Messenger a good read, perhaps reflecting your experience

of life in a pandemic, virtual church services or for many of us,

being home a lot more than we are used to! With few or no visitors

and no flour, no yeast...

Please send submissions by Sunday May 24 to the Parkdale email

address [email protected]

Kathleen and Debbie are co-editing this issue as we did last

month. Danica and Elise are taking a well-earned rest. Working

together on this June issue is a very special task for Debbie and

Kathleen especially because this is the 200th issue of The

Messenger!! That means 20 years of publication. We collaborated in

publishing the first issue in September 2001. Then, as

now, we imagined a newsletter that would be a compelling read, with

stories and news from multiple contributors, funny stuff, lots of

photos. We had no idea how long it would endure but probably did

not imagine 20 years! In the June edition, the 200th edition, we will

reprise some of the features of that first 2001 issue and provide a bit

of history of how The Messenger has developed and changed

over the last 20 years.

With very best wishes to all! Stay safe!

Kathleen and Debbie

LET US BE JOYFUL IN HOPE, PATIENT IN

AFFLICTION, FAITHFUL IN PRAYER Here are some

prayer suggestions for this Week:

“… the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as

we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for

words.” (Romans 8: 6)

- For all infected with COVID19, for their families and for those

most vulnerable and exposed to the virus.

- Let our prayers be with and for those who are grieving their

loved ones within the limitations of the lockdown.

- For those in long-term care homes (residents and their families,

staff).

- For our congregation, and specially for our elder saints; and for

those who have parents, grandparents, friends or relatives in senior

residences and nursing homes.

- For frontline workers and volunteers (medical doctors, nurses,

technicians, janitors, cooks, volunteers, PCWs) and their families: for

the daily emotional and physical strain on them, for health and safety;

for faith and strength. Let us keep in our hearts and prayers those

from our congregation who are serving in this area (Allison and her

children, Carolyn, Paul, Christine, Ellen, Bill and Kathleen). We

thank you!!!

- For suffering from other conditions and illnesses; specially for

people with cancer.

- Times of fear, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty for many, let

us pray for all who are experiencing those.

- For all those in the most vulnerable situation in societies: no

housing, even more limited resources, no access to services, no

spaces for community, mental conditions. For those, children and

adults, living under conditions of domestic abuse. Let us remember

our IFTC community at this time.

- We pray for wisdom to governments of the world to make wise

decisions on behalf of their people and the global community.

Page 13: Trust in God · wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally,

- For small business owners also facing drastic decisions; for the

unemployed and the big economic uncertainties lying ahead.

- We pray for families, for young ones and graduating classes…

Lord hear our prayer, and in your love

answer us.

COVID-19: MESSAGES FROM OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH: HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND

YOUR FAMILY?

To reduce the spread of germs including the flu and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) we recommend that you:

Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just washed your hands with soap

Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand

If you are a return traveler (including travel to the United States of America) OR have MILD symptoms – you MUST self-isolate. Most people with MILD symptoms will recover at home with no issues. You are helping limit the spread of the virus by staying at home.

Social distancing refers to creating physical distance between ourselves so that we can limit the spread of the virus. Social distancing by all is IMPERATIVE to limit transmission in the community, to protect vulnerable populations and outbreaks in institutions. We must ‘flatten the curve’ so we don’t see spikes in cases. By this, I mean that we want to slow down transmission of the virus and lessen the number of cases in the community that happen at the same time, so that our health system continues to work properly. Having a sharp increase of cases in a small timeframe will overload our healthcare resources and have more severe impacts on our community. Social distancing is important for everyone at this time, but especially important for our older adult community (55+). Do NOT gather in groups. Practice social distancing.

Social distancing does not mean emotional distancing. Check in with others by phone or other technology. Check in with yourself. It’s ok not to be ok. Please know that help is available, and we encourage you to reach out to Distress Centre of Ottawa to connect with someone at 613-238-3311 if needed.

Case Management and Privacy

We have received many questions from people who feel they are at risk, including many people expressing concern about being in the same location as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who may have symptoms of COVID-19.

I would like to clarify a few points:

Given the transmission of COVID-19, we are all at risk. Social distancing, proper hand hygiene, not touching your face and self-isolation (when directed) are the best ways to reduce your personal risk at this time.

A close contact of a case of COVID-19, is someone who has lived with, provided care for, or spent longer periods of time with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Case and contact management is a role of public health to help identify who may have been in close contact with a confirmed case. Ottawa Public Health will contact you directly if you have been identified as a close contact.

OPH works closely with each confirmed case of COVID-19 to create a list of close contacts that require follow-up. If you have been contacted by Ottawa Public Health, follow the advice provided to you by the nurse.

Fraud concerns

I have been made aware that certain residents have received a phone call asking for credit card information from Ottawa Public Health (OPH). OPH (or any health unit) will not ask you for credit card information. Do not give your credit card information out if you receive a call or message similar to this. Fraudulent activity during a situation like this is deplorable. I encourage you to report it to Ottawa Police Services.

Gratitude

Thank you to all residents of the City of Ottawa for your ongoing patience and cooperation. We are all in this together, and we need everyone to do their part- whether providing an essential service or staying inside – to be able to slow the
