Principal’s
Message
Week three of term was another busy week at
Trundle Central School. The RAGE program was
an outstanding success. The quality of the
presenters and student participation were
excellent. Centracare staff were glowing in their
praise of our students. The conclusion of the
program will be on Monday 17th of August with a
two hour audio visual presentation. I have asked
the presenters to modify this program for Years 7
& Year 8 boys and they have agreed. The sessions
will be conducted in the near future. I feel our
school has a responsibility to educate the whole
child rather than concentrate solely on the core
curriculum. This is why we offer pastoral care
activities such as this program as they complement
the curriculum not detract from it.
I am investigating offering parenting programs for
the community. It is amazing that in our modern
society you need to complete a course to be a
traffic controller (stop/go person) but becoming a
parent has no formal qualifications or even
required learning. Traffic controllers at least please
motorist 50 percent of the time. Try pleasing your
teenage child at this high percentage. I believe only
dead people have learnt as much as they need to
know so why not investigate these courses for our
community?
The content of some programs is often
confronting to students. This was the case in the girl’s session last week conducted by our
counsellor Ms Sally St Clair. This is why a note
was sent home advising parents that these sessions
were optional. However, ignorance of the issues
surrounding adolescence and the support services
available in our school, I believe, does not lead to
students being safer. Open discussion about issues
and emotions generated by adolescence and
knowledge of the role of the school counsellor I
believe, is vital to keeping young people safe.
Indeed, statistics indicate that 1 in 3 young people
will experience a significant mental health event
before they reach the age of twenty. Knowledge
of support services is vital to reduce the intensity
and duration of these events.
The school is also in the process of inviting welfare
organisations to come and speak to students about
the dangers of ICE addiction. Literature I read
from the Department indicates that this drug has
not created new addicts but it creates a level of
addiction in existing drug users that is almost
impossible to overcome. The associated violence
and anti-social behaviour is also to a level never
seen before in our society. Trundle unfortunately
is not immune from this problem.
Many parents believe sheltering young people is
the most effective protection from drugs. I respect
a parent’s right to choose this option. These
sessions when available will be voluntary and open
to the community. Recently the former Labour
Premier of New South Wales Neville Wran’s
daughter was jailed for a drug related crime. All
the money and power of this man could not
protect his daughter from drug addiction.
Education, I believe is more effective than wrapping
children in cotton wool or pretending the problem
does not exist.
On Monday I accompanied a group of footballers
and netball players to Dubbo. Our students once
again set a standard of behaviour and effort that
the whole community should be proud of. During
this carnival one of our students was heavily
concussed. I asked our boys to be supervised by a
teacher from another school whilst I transported this student to hospital. Once again their behaviour
was excellent, a true tribute to their parents and
the school. One of our boys also displayed
excellent community spirit by speaking to a young
lady from another town after our student was
injured. I am sure asking for her phone number
was just to check on her continued welfare at a
later date.
An outstanding feature of our students is the level
of heart and determination they display. I
overheard boys from another school saying they
were injured when they realised the size of some
of the opposition. I suspect they were suffering
from heart muscle injuries. I rarely mention
students individually but as far as determination,
Bryce Rowley Haworth was outstanding. Bryce is

only small in terms of weight but I suspect most of
him is heart. This is just another example of how
contact sport gives boys an opportunity to display
character and determination. This is why whilst
ever I am Principal contact sport will be supported,
even if it is not politically correct to do so.
One of the pleasing changes I have seen in Country
Rugby League is the increase in the level of
professionalism. The Dubbo carnival was well run
with good refereeing and medical care available. If
the game is going to survive, schools need to enter
these days to promote the game at the grassroots
level. This will only be achieved with high standards
of professionalism and care from Country Rugby
League. One thing that never changes
unfortunately is the expert spectator that needs to
run the game from the sideline. A common, but
unfortunate feature of the game of Rugby League.
It is hard to believe the game is struggling in the
country with the amount of un-tapped and
unwashed talent on the sidelines.
Another example of the heart and talent of our
students is our recent results in the Western Area
Athletics Carnival at Dubbo. Six students from our
school will represent Western Area at the state
carnival in Sydney. This is an outstanding effort
from our students. I wish them well in the state
carnival. I would like to especially mention Eliza
Stokes who won her event. Eliza just goes about
her business without any fuss but look at what she
can achieve! Well done to all the students. If you think I was a proud Principal last week you are
right.
Next week HSC trial exams begin. These exams
are another part of the assessment process. It is
important that students give these exams their
highest priority to maximise their performance.
Perspective is something that is often difficult to
understand when you are in the teens but I
encourage students to remember that an exam is a
judgement of academic performance rather than a
judgement of the quality of the person. If they can
honestly say they tried their best they should be
proud of their attitude and performance. I am sure
the group of Year 12 girls I drove to Peak Hill on
Thursday last week were only focusing on their
graduation dresses, hair and make up to give me
confidence, everything else was under control.
On Thursday Primary students will be taking part
in a creative arts day. This day will allow students
to display their talents and gain an improved
appreciation of the arts. These days also provide
alternative avenues for students to display talent. I
support these activities and thank staff for being
willing to organise these activities.
Recently there was an issue in a Sydney school
where a child was preaching radical terrorist
related thoughts, actions and doctrine. This is an
unfortunate aspect of modern Australian society.
Thankfully, I can honestly say Trundle Central
School has not an issue with students being
influenced by radical terrorist groups. However, I
did notice a student wearing a Wests Tigers hat
last week. This is certainly a radical thought
process but I do not believe the safety and security
directorate needs to be informed at this stage.
The school orchard is developing with the earth
works almost complete thanks to Mr Donald
Wright. It is too wet for the final trim of the site
so this should occur in the near future. This
project is taking a former wasted piece of land and
hopefully making it productive. We will make some
mistakes in the process but I believe our end
product will be well worth it.
The school has started planning for 2016. It is
disappointing that such a great school is always
struggling for students to maintain staff through
factors largely beyond our control. One child
makes an enormous difference in terms of staffing
numbers as the Department does not have the flexibility of other systems, so please consider us
when making the decision on where to send your
child in 2016. It saddens me when decisions on
where to send children are made at birth rather
than considering the current product which is
available locally. Losing talented staff has an
enormous effect on the community of Trundle
both economically and socially. This school does
not educate for conformity but opportunity and I
can assure parents the quality of education here is
best practice. I will gladly provide a personal tour
of the school so people can make an informed
decision.
Another great week in Trundle.

is the iconic children’s fundraising campaign of Children’s Medical Research
Institute. On Friday 7th August, students will be asked to bring a gold coin
donation to wear jeans to school for the day. Students will need to wear their
school shirt and appropriate school footwear must also be worn.
Rehearsals will continue this week for Big Gig.
The schedule is as follows:
Primary students who normally go on a bus are to walk to the Memorial Hall with Mrs
Sanderson at 3:30pm. They are to be picked up from the hall at 4:30pm.
We are also looking for donations of unwanted makeup and hair spray.

NAIDOC Day at Trundle Central School A beautiful day was had by everyone. It was the only day in the week that the sun was shining. The
students rotated through 3 groups and the activities were: clay tiles, painting, boomerang painting,
jewellery, cooking, traditional language songs, artefacts, dance, didgeridoo and stories, dreamtime
stories.
The students had a wonderful day, learning about the traditional Aboriginal culture. We were very
fortunate to have the Peak Hill Central School Dance Group perform for us during lunch time. These
students also conducted one of the workshops with our own students.
Our students also had the opportunity to work with Daphne from Condobolin, who helped us paint a
mural for the school. A big thank you to our local parents who helped; Darren Wykes, Cheree Stokes
and Melissa Stokes.

Under 16 Girl’s Netball (see front cover) Last Monday the Under 16 Girl’s Netball team
travelled to Dubbo to compete in the small
schools competition.
All girls played very well, and improved with each game. They showed fine Trundle fighting spirit,
never giving up regardless of the score. Thanks to
Mr Southon for driving the bus so that we could
compete.
Player of the day was Lucy Aveyard who never
stopped trying even though she was defending girls
who were a lot taller than her and more
experienced.

Sport, Lifestyle & Recreation – Trish Morgan – Trundle CS Year 11 SLR having been studying a module called Fitness. Students develop the knowledge,
understanding and skills necessary to design, implement and evaluate individual fitness programs. As
part of their assessment students had to carry out a range of fitness test and compare their results to
standards for their age. They then designed a fitness program to suit their specific goals and carried out
the program for three weeks. On completion of the program they re-tested themselves to see if they
improved. Students applied knowledge and skills learnt relating to types of training, designing
programs and the nature of fitness.

This year I have been lucky enough to be teaching a very talented bunch of year
11 Visual Arts students. These students have excelled in both practical art making activities and theory based assessments. The pictures bellow are from a recent
assessment task called ‘Copy Cat’ which required students to learn about a 2D artistic medium by studying masters from the past. The results speak for
themselves.
