    Sir Edward William Elgar (2 June 1857 23 February 1934)

    Edward Elgar was an English composer, who received international recognition for

    his classical compositions. His most famous orchestral works include the Enigma

    Variations, the Pomp and Circumstances Marches (including Land of Hope and

    lor!", concertos for violin, and choral works such as #he $ream of erontius

    #owards the end of his life he made some gramophone recordings, %ecoming one of

    the first great classical composers to see the potential of recording music.

    #he music to which the words of the refrain Land of Hope and lor!, are set is the

    trio theme from Edward Elgar-s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1.#he words

    were fitted to the melod! on the suggestion of ing Edward V//who told Elgar he

    thought the melod! would make a great song. 0hen Elgar was re1uested to write a

    work for the ing-s coronation, he worked the suggestion into his Coronation Ode,
