Apulian farmhouse

The Masseria (farmhouse) is the symbol of rural culture and is strongly connected to

the history of Valle d'Itria. The Masserie were created in order to ensure efficientadministration of large territories and became more and more functional over time.

Community of families, farmers and settlers unctuate their lives according to the

rhythm of the land and its cultivation. There are many documents that attest the

activities of the old rural farms since !oman times and it goes over under the

"aracen domination and "wabian#$ngevin eriod.

Its origins date bac% to the &ongobardic conuest, which led to sheherds gathering

together to live in huge farmhouses. The word Masseria, from the &atin maseria

or maserius, which was comound word consisting of mas (countryside) and er

(home). The $ngioini of Taranto*s territorial olicy allowed, all inhabitants of the area,to use land as a common good. +owever, some citiens too% ossession of the

lands, and divided the country in smaller arts. -onetheless, there was no clear law

to govern these actions, and only the creation of the land register in /01 clarified

the situation.

These buildings resond to the same construction criteria, which divides the roerty

into two arts2 the house of the &ord, or 3farmer3 (the administrator of the farmer

community and agricultural lands), and secondary area, where there are the lodgings

of the easants and the wor%ing area. The buildings are surrounded by thic% walls,

which include e4tensive gardens, where there is a chael and where, deending on

the territory of which they arise, are cultivated olive, almond or screws. 5al%ing

around the $ulian country you can meet farms reminiscent of noble alaces of the

Venetian countryside, and others that loo% li%e castles, maybe because they are

situated near the coast, and made inaccessible to defend themselves from bandits.

The ancient architectural volumes of the farms are then e4anded in order to have

more sacious and rational living. 6armers creates relationshis between

landowners to manage large tracts land.

the distinction more clearly between the master's house, and the wor%ing lace (eg,

&uco, Mita).

Today, the farms of :uglia are still there. $ear between the roads or in the middle

of the countryside, with grandeur and dignity. "ome have been restored and

sometimes destined for the tourist or as a charming resort to rediscover the culture

and tradition of rural farm. 8ther, comletely abandoned, living a lonely difficult and

erhas ris%y, but not without its charm and still full of history

The Masseria 6errari lies in the country of Martina 6ranca2 in the first half of the

/th century it was comosed of /0 acres of land owned by the ;ioia, Cito and

Carriero families, who lived in various little trullos, located within the roerty. "ince

that time, the masseria has comletely changed its roduction focus from livestoc% to

wine roduction.

The casedde, the original habitation of the landlord, have remained such, while the

other structures once reserved for other uses, have become additional homes,

structures for wine roduction (almento), and barns for animals.

&e origini e la dataione dei trulli ? ancora oggi oggetto di studio ed argomento molto

controverso. &e costruioni in ietra a secco in aggetto, intese come tiologia

architettonica, risalgono ad eoche reistoriche e sono resenti in numerose one

della terra2 "agna, Isole Canarie, Irlanda, ;ran @retagna, "coia, Aalmaia,

&a controversia nella dataione dei trulli deriva dalla resena in Turchia del villaggio

di +arran costituito da migliaia di trulli.

uesto villaggio anticamente chiamato Caran ? stato nel duemila avanti Cristo il

ragioni economiche, sociali e culturali, si sono sviluati assumendo delle rorie

caratteristiche architettoniche molto iE evolute risetto alle altre tiologie a trullo

resenti nel resto del mondo, divenendo un atrimonio artistico unico nel suo

genere.

Trulli3 che resenta la maggior concentraione di trulli in :uglia.

Come detto in recedena, i trulli ur essendo iL resenti nella ona della Murgia

dei Trulli e con caratteristiche molto iL evolute, sono diffusi in tutta la :uglia ma con

forme differenti a seconda delle caratteristiche dei materiali con cui sono costruiti.
