Integrated as a native module for PATROL, TrueSight Operations Management - Dell CompellentStorage Monitoring is designed to monitor the health and performance of your Dell storageenvironment.

Prior to install TrueSight Operations Management - Dell Compellent Storage Monitoring, makesure that the following elements are installed and properly configured:

PATROL Agent, version 3.8 or higher (see BMC PATROL documentation)

PATROL Console (see BMC PATROL documentation)

Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager 6.3 and higher

JRE 1.6 update 43 or higher (installed on the system where the PATROL Agent runs). On 64-bitsystems, both the 32-bit and the 64-bit JRE are required.

TrueSight Operations Management - Dell Compellent Storage Monitoring only supports Sun or OracleJava Virtual Machines (JVMs).

Dell Compellent Enterprise ManagerDell Compellent Enterprise Manager allows you to monitor, manage, and analyze StorageCenters from a centralized management console. It consists of the following components:

Data Collector: Data Collector is a service that gathers reporting data and alerts from allStorage Centers. There are two types of Data Collectors: Primary and Remote. Allinstallations must include one primary Data Collector. Each Data Collector service (primary orremote) is managed using a Data Collector Manager.

Database: Data Collector stores data in a database or flat file. The database can run on thesame or a different platform from Data Collector.

Enterprise Manager Clients: An Enterprise Manager Client connects to the Data CollectorService to provide a centralized management console for one or more Storage Centers.Additional clients can be connected to the same Data Collector Service to providemanagement from more than one location.

Server Agents: By installing a Server Agent for Microsoft Windows on each Windows serverusing a Storage Center, Data Collector can gather local volume information from a Windowsserver. Using this information, Enterprise Manager can free volume storage space fromexpired Replays that would otherwise remain locked by Windows. Each Server Agent ismanaged by a Server Agent Manager.

This guide describes how to install and configure Enterprise Manager components. For moreinformation, please refer to the Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager documentation.

Creating Consolidated Data Viewswith DashboardsBMC TrueSight Operations Management provides dashboards to create consolidated andcustomized views of your monitored IT environment. Dashboards are build from dashlettemplates. Once you have selected the dashlet that corresponds to the type of view you wish tocreate, you can access a specific type of data and present it graphically.

TrueSight Operations Management - Dell Compellent Storage Monitoring monitors availability, capacity, and performance for Dell disk arrays. It makes this data available to you throughdifferent dashlets for you to create a clear view of the performance and status of your storageenvironment within a private or shared dashboard. The product leverages the BMC TrueSightOperations Management unified features and capabilities to offer you a deep visibility into over200 key metrics.

When a dashlet in the dashboard identif ies a problem, it also acts as an access point to investigate andtroubleshoot the root cause.

This chapter explains how to create consolidated views for some of the most critical elements ofyour Dell environment. Dashboards report on critical aspects of your Dell storage systems, andconsolidate and normalize information from a variety of sources. While saving you considerabletime and effort, a unified view can help you rapidly and proactively detect poor storageperformance and hardware failures.

TipOnce you have created a dashboard, you may want to use its settings to create anotherdashboard f or a dif f erent device. To do so, copy the dashboard f rom the Dashboards page:1. Click My Dashboards or Shared Dashboards.

2. In the action menu to the lef t of the dashboard name, select Copy Dashboard.

3. The new dashboard appears in the My Dashboards list as Copy of <DashboardName>.

The following topics describe how to create dashboards for:

Checking Disks Health

Detecting High Processor Utilization

Diagnosing a Bad Disk Layout

Diagnosing Slow Volumes

Identifying Busiest Volumes

Monitoring Hardware Components

Use cases were performed with BMC TrueSight Operations Management v.10.1.

Checking Disks HealthManufacturers use the “mean time to failure” or MTTF to indicate the operational reliability oftheir products. But the advertised MTTF of 1,000,000 hours is misleading. Recent studies showthat the average annual replacement rate for hard disks is typically between 3% and 15%.Because a disk failure can result in loss of data, unavailability and performance degradation, it ishighly recommended to monitor disks health.

To check Dell disks health, you will need to create a simple two-row dashboard. Dashboardsallow you to gather specific types of data and display them in a consolidated graphical format. For detailed information about dashboards options and features, refer to the BMCdocumentation.

To verify disks health1. Login to your BMC TrueSight Operations Management console.

2. Select Dashboards from the navigation pane.

3. In the Dashboards page, click Add Dashboard or select Add Dashboard from the dashboard

action menu .

4. Enter a Title for your dashboard and configure a Global Filter, if needed.

5. Click Add Dashlet to open the dashlet library for the first column of the row.

This dashboard allows you to easily compare the Processor Utilization and Transfer Byte Rates fortwo controllers . Make sure that the Processor Utilization is lower than 80%. A processorutilization over 80% highlights a potential overloaded situation and indicates that the controllermay constitutes a bottleneck for the storage system.

Verify the Transfer Byte Rate of your controllers. If its value stays low – while the overallprocessor utilization is high – it indicates that the node is performing "non productive" tasks. Itthen may become critical to determine the source of activity that generates the high processorutilization.

Diagnosing Slow VolumesWhen servers are experiencing slow I/Os performance, you may want to verify the actualresponse time of the volumes the server is relying on. The response time represent the averagetime it takes to complete the read/write operations on a volume during the collection process.Typically, the average response time is below 10 milliseconds. You may also want to compare thisvalue with other volumes' response time to find out if they have relatively similar throughput orif one server is really getting worse I/O performance than another.

The industry common guidelines in terms of response time are:

Less than 10 ms Very good

Between 10 – 20 ms OK

Between 20 – 50 ms Slow, needs attention

Greater than 50 ms I/O bottleneck

To identify slow volumes, you will need to create a simple one-row dashboard. Dashboards allowyou to gather specific types of data and display them in a consolidated graphical format. Fordetailed information about dashboards options and features, refer to the BMC documentation.

Monitoring Hardware ComponentsHardware failures are responsible for approximately half of IT system outages. Left unchecked, resource consumption make identifying issues (battery run downs, excessive heat, powerfluctuations, etc.) challenging. Monitoring hardware health can help minimize server andapplication downtime and reduce business risks.

To diagnose and predict hardware components failures, you will need to create a three-columndashboard that reports on the elements that are most likely to fail in a storage system. This topicillustrates how to monitor batteries, fans, and power supplies for two storage systems.Dashboards allows you to gather specific types of data and display them in a consolidatedgraphical format. For detailed information about dashboards options and features, refer to the BMC documentation.

To Monitor Hardware Components1.

9. Select the Dell storage device for which you to compare physical disks I/Os.

10. Select the Status parameter of the batteries of the storage system and click Apply.Monitoring storage systems' batteries can greatly reduce the risk of unplanned downtime byproviding immediate notification of detected faults. It also helps planning batteryreplacement in a properly timed and budgeted manner.

Tip

To quickly retrieve a component or a parameter, enter its name in the Search Parameters f ieldand click Search.

11. Repeat step 4 to 8 in the second column of the dashboard for the fans.Even though data centers and servers are cooled with air conditioning and fans, computingsystems may be overheated. The temperature of the interior of the case of a storage systemis controlled with fans. To prevent ambient temperature to get too high, you need to closelymonitor the fan sensors to ensure the component is properly working:

Select the Status parameters of the fans of the storage system and click Apply.

A degraded fan should be replaced immediately.

12. Finally, configure the dashlet of the third column of the dashboard to monitor the storagesystem power supply. Repeat step 4 to 8.After hard drives, the power supply is the device that is most likely to fail. The properoperation of this device highly depends on the quality of the data center electricaldistribution. Indeed, voltage fluctuations are detrimental to power supplies: they canshorten their life span or impair them.

Select the Status parameters of the power supplies of the storage system and clickApply.

13. Click Save.

14. The dashboard is completed and shows the status of batteries, fans and power supplies ofthe storage system.

Managing Baselines and KeyPerformance IndicatorsTo detect abnormalities on the monitored environment, BMC TrueSight Operations Managementcalculates baselines per attribute based on values collected over a specified period of time todetermine a normal operating range. When the collected values for these parameters are out ofrange, an alert is triggered. Some attributes are identified by default as Key PerformanceIndicators (identified with the icon) and automatically included in the base lining calculation.

Managing baselines

The baseline is the expected normal operating range for an attribute of a monitor. There are twobaselines: Baseline High and Baseline Low. Baseline High represents the point at which 95% ofthe weighted average of the historical values fall below this value for the selected time period; Baseline Low represents the point at which 90% of the weighted average of historical values forthe selected time period fall above this line.

Baselines are generated for KPI attributes that have an active abnormality thresholds.

Managing Key Performance Indicators

Starting from v9.5 of BPPM, attributes that have not been initially designated in the KM as KeyPerformance Indicators (KPIs) cannot be flagged as KPIs from BPPM/TrueSight. Although enablingbaseline is possible through the Options > Administration > Intelligent Event Thresholds featureavailable in the Infrastructure Management Server operator console, BMC does not recommenddoing it.

For more information, refer to the BMC TrueSight Operations Management documentation available f romdocs.bmc.com.
