How do you feel about feeding 50% sweet feed and 50% whole corn kernels off the cob? WhereI live shelled corn is abundant and inexpensive; therefore I would like to add it to the sweetfeed. I normally feed 5-6 pounds per horse in the cooler months and pasture the horse when theseason allows. I don’t want to colic the horses on the corn. Also, can I feed wheat since that is

also readily available?

Whole corn is an acceptable feed for horses as long as it is not moldy and is introduced slowly. If a horse has dental problems they may not be able to chew it effectively. It is very energydense. One pound of corn contains about 25% more calories than the average sweet feed, whichalso usually contains corn in addition to many other less energy dense ingredients. The amounts

you are feeding should not be a problem if divided into two separate feedings. If you are group feeding thehorses I would worry about individuals getting more than they should. They should also have hay if pastureis not available and free access to salt and water should always be provided.

Wheat is much less digestible and not very palatable to horses. It should be processed (flaked and/orsteamed) to increase digestibility. I’d prefer corn to wheat. That being said, the concern regarding mold incorn is very serious - the type of mold that commonly affects corn can kill a horse. Make sure you get cornthat is guaranteed not to be moldy. If the seller can not test it you should contact your local county Extensionagent to see if they can help you get it tested.

http://www.esc.rutgers.edu/ask_expert/ate_nutgfm.htm

Is it okay to feed corn and wheat to horses?

Answer provided by Carey Williams, Ph.D.,Rutgers Cooperative Extension.

Oats are the most commoncereal grain fed to horses. Theyare higher in fiber than mostgrains and not too high in

sugars and starches (this is the reason whygrains and sweet feeds have gotten such abad name recently). If fed with goodquality grass hay they should meet all therequirements for a mature horse up to lightwork. However, if you have a horse that isintensely working you may need a vita-min/mineral supplement and possibly anadded energy source (like corn oil or ricebran) if they start losing weight while intraining. If you have a pregnant orgrowing horse they will need an additionalvitamin/mineral supplement to balanceeverything out - especially the calciumand phosphorus. Also, they would needadditional protein in this ration. A goodway to add the protein is to add alfalfa ofsome sort (hay, cubes, pellets, etc.) to thediet. This will provide protein along withthe extra calcium needed. Another goodprotein source is soybean meal.

Are oats good to

feed to horses?I have considered switchingmy horses from a typicalsweet feed to straight oats. Isthis okay to do? What would

I have to worry about, if anything?

This poem is the story of a North Dakota Indian. Everyone called him “Horse”!In hard times he had to sell his beloved mustang, I sadly say with remorse! From the moment of birth, the foal to the Indian man had no fear!!!The Indian christened the colt with an earth name of “Running Deer”!“Horse” didn’t even have to break him when the colt was old enough to ride...The Indian and the Paint spoke a silent language. A whisper on the wind, I confide!Once a semi truck honked and Running Deer spooked at the loud, frightful sound....And sent the Indian, “Horse”, with a thud, to the unforgiving ground........The mustang ran away to a little girl’s house. She knew something was very wrong, of course!Told her father, “Running Deer would never be here without, on his back, the Indian man, “Horse”!The girl and the father drove down the roads in search and fear, no words did they talk! They found the Indian Brave in a ditch, injured, and unable to walk! For a while, the Indian spent his days getting around in an old wheel chair,He knew when he recovered that his Running Deer at the corral would be waiting there! But Nature, as you know, heals all wounds in time. She never fails! And soon one could witness Running Deer and the Indian riding on ole dusty trails!!!!Life passes quickly. Days and years soon pass like lightning in the sky!Running Deer is now fifteen-his paint body gaunt and thin, I relate with a sigh! The Indian, “Horse”, is financially strapped from our poor economy.....But he remembered earth saying, “If you love something you must set it free!So his ad appears, “For only four hundred and fifty bucks you can buy a nice mustang paint!Someone to love him FOREVER! A nice home a must or else going he “ain’t”!So Kathy bought him for this eight year old skinny little girl. Willow was her name! And Running Deer bonded with Willow, as with “Horse”. It was very much the same!!There was a strange spirit about Running Deer as though he’d lived long ago in another time! One day at a horse show Willow became quite ill and wasn’t feeling so fine!In the trailer, when he was loaded, he began to misbehave badly, jumping up and down....They took him out. He put his head in truck’s window til Willow had a smile and no frown! One night as Kathy lay on her Serta mattress in peaceful sleep....A ruckus at two in the morning woke her from dreams so deep! With a flashlight and gun and a little anxiety, she entered into the dark with fright! She discovered her niece and boyfriend on the road. Her niece had sneaked out in the night!Running Deer was running wildly with thundering hooves. He knew something was amiss! She grabbed her niece by the hand and said, “Your butt “goodbye” you can kiss!Once an old lady with dementia ran away. Through the woods she would go-outcome family dread,The mustang took Willow through orange grove only one mile to where she lay on ground dead!Note: You are merely being selfish by “hanging on” when push comes to shove.....You let a horse die from starvation shows you know nothing about love! Now the moral of this poem—a moral to you from me.......IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING THEN YOU HAVE TO SET IT FREE!!!Willow and Running Deer attend horse shows and the mustang has gained a lotof weight back-I would ask the Great Spirit to bless “Horse” for giving up his horseafter 15 years. It must be a forever pain in his heart but doing the right thing is its ownblessing. Maybe on the “Other Side” they’ll both have “greener pastures”!
