TRS Support StaffSupport Staff will assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, and activity participation. If you are interested in becoming a TRS Support Staff, please contact the TRS offi ce.

Mission of TRS

The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and those who are blind or have visual impairments. If you have questions about a program or the level of functioning needed, please contact any of the TR staff listed below.Course #: The course # allows us to process your registration form more quickly and accurately.Program Fee: This is the fee that is charged for participation in that specifi c program.Transportation Fee: This fee is charged for programs that offer transportation. The fee is $3.00 for each round trip. Transportation is provided from home as well as the following pick- up points: Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem -Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, & 460 Antique Mall

New! Egyptian Style Belly DanceThe Egyptian style of belly dance uses every part of the

body making it a great full body workout! All fi tness levels, ages and genders are encouraged to attend. This belly dance class is so much fun, you won't even realize your exercising! BowlingReady to work on your strikes and spares? Join us at Lee Hi Lanes for two exciting games of bowling with friends for 8 weeks. Fitness ClubWhether you've never been in a gym or are a regular, fi tness club's individualized assistance will be sure to give you the support needed to succeed! We will have access to the cardio and adaptive equipment, weight machines and the indoor track at the Green Ridge Recreation Center at this 8 week program! The fi rst week will be an orientation on how to use the equipment, and then TRS support staff will help you reach your fi tness goals each week. We will be working on learning new exercises and stretches. Join us as we get up and get moving! Hydro FitHydro Fit is now 8 weeks long! In this aquatics class designed especially for Therapeutic Recreation, you will get a total body workout without putting a lot of stress on your joints and muscles. Hydro Fit is a medium intensity exercise program that includes strength training exercises and short intervals of cardio training. A variety of water fi tness equipment will provided for you to utilize during program. Kickin' It KickballIn this program we will learn how to play Kickball. We

will practice our kicking and catching skills, then break into teams to compete in our own kickball games. Games and practice will be at Darrell Shell park. Mission NutritionYour mission, if you choose to accept, is to learn all

about nutrition! We will learn every day nutrition facts, what healthy serving sizes are, and then enjoy the healthy and delicious foods that are prepared for us. We will learn about healthy alternatives to chips, soda, and candy. We will also hear advice on what to choose to eat when dining out at a restaurant. Food is included in program fee. Saturdays at the MuseumSpend your Saturdays this Fall at some of the best

museums Roanoke has to offer. In October, we will be attending the Spectacular Saturday with live music, crafts, and more at the Taubman Art Museum. In November, we will visit the newly renovated Science Museum of Western Virginia and check out the rooftop butterfl y habitat. Our last Saturday will be spent at the Transportation Museum's 'Candy Cane Express' event. There will be crafts, holiday activities, train rides, pictures with Jolly Old St. Nick and more! Pumpkin FestivalSpend the day at Sinkland Farms in Riner, Va for their annual Pumpkin Festival. The Pumpkin Festival has something for everything, including live music, a barnyard petting zoo, an antique tractor display and much more! Weekend Camping at Easter Seals

Get ready this fall to experience all the fun and excitement of summer camp without the summer heat. We will travel to Camp

Easter Seals, located in Nelson County, VA for a full weekend of summer camp fun! Participants will get

to participate in a wide of variety activities from horseback riding, to star gazing, to shooting paintballs. We will arrive Friday afternoon at Camp and depart Sunday morning. All meals and snacks, bed linens, and activities are included in

your program fee. Participants must be independent in their personal care and able to administer their own medications.

Life SkillsTechnology, cooking, home improvement, and social outings

Wednesday AdventurersExplore fun activities, new places, delicious food and exciting exercises with Wednesday Adventurers! Activity information will be distributed weekly to all registered participants, highlighting the next week’s activity, transportation, dates, and times. Program fees include all materials, supplies, admission, and lunches for this 6 week program. Payment Plans are available. Movie ClubMovie Club is now on Saturday afternoons. Choose from two of the latest movies and enjoy a great Saturday. If you want a popcorn bucket, you will need to purchase a 2013 bucket for $18.50 that can be refi lled for $3.50. Movie Clubs meet on Saturdays from ~4-5:30 depending on movie choices. Dinner DatesIn this fun new program we will meet at the Brambleton Center for a dinner date with friends! Participants will learn and practice all the necessary skills needed to prepare a meal for friends and family at home. Each month, participants will take part in all aspects of the meal preparation, such as setting the table, preparing and cooking the food, and cleaning up afterwards. This program is designed for participants who want to practice the skills they learn at home and have access to a kitchen. Leisure SeekersLeisure Seekers provides a structured environment for skill-building, socializing with peers, and engaging in a wealth of activities. Weekly activities for Fall will include a wall art night, Halloween party, indoor mini-golf, and more! Activity information will be distributed weekly at this 6 week program. Super SuppersJoin your friends as we explore a local restaurant each month, experiencing different cuisines and atmospheres sure to please the palette. Super Suppers is designed to help participants with

ordering from a menu and working within a given budget, while enjoying a night out with friends. No money handling skills are needed. Super Supper meets on Fridays from 6:30-

8:30. Program fees vary according to restaurant. See below for restaurants and descriptions.

MingleMingle is designed for young adults with disabilities, ages 18-30. Participate in socialization, recreation, and leisure activities at the Brambleton Center and wellness activities at Green Ridge Recreation Center. As a member of Mingle, you will work with other group members in planning monthly outings in the Roanoke Valley. Mingle will meet Tuesday or Thursday nights from 7-9 pm (You may register for one night, not both). Both groups will meet one Saturday each semester for ‘Social Saturday’. This is an opportunity for the Tuesday and Thursday night groups to meet and socialize. To become a member, you must be able to follow two step directions, be independent in your personal care, have the ability to care for your own belongings, and self-administer your medications. Contact Kristen Gallatin to determine eligibility. You do not need to re-register if you attended Mingle this summer.Program fee is $43 for September - December. Jason Burris, CTRS worked with TRS from his internship in the summer of 2012 until May 2013. Jason left TRS to pursue a full time job as a Recreation Therapist with Youth Village in Bartlett,TN.

Kate Brolyes, MS, CF-SLP has accepted a full

time postion as a speech-language pathologist at Friendship Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Kate started working with TRS through ACE Camp

in 2007.Shalamar Montgomery will no longer be working TRS programs. Shalamar worked programs like Swimming & a Picnic, Movie Clubs, Out & Abouts. We wish you the best of luck. Thanks for all your work!

Congradulation to Ava Stephens and Gretchen Reed for becoming a CTRS!!! Roanoke County is proud to have Casey, Ava, Gretchen, Max, Kristen, and Kari providing the highest quality of therapeutic recreation.

Therapeutic Recreation wants to thank Ashley Buckhannon for interning with us this summer. Ashley is a TR student from Radford who worked Fitness Club, Multi-Cultural Night, Scavenger Hunt, and Mingle; just to list a few. TRS wishes Ashley the best of luck where ever her future takes her.

TRS CTRS StaffA CTRS is a Certifi ted Therapeutic Recreational Specialist. A CTRS is a person who has completed course work in therapeutic recreation and passed the NCTRC exam. NCTRC is the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certifi cation. The NCTRC exam ensures that those who provide recreation therapy provide quality service to the highest standard.

Guidelines for Registration

Transportation Participants are asked to provide their own transportation, as County provided transportation is available on a very limited basis. Space will be available until fi lled. It is TRS policy to only wait fi ve (5) minutes for a participant aft er their scheduled pickup time. Aft er that, the van will continue on the route. If a participant is a “no show” without prior notifi cation three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. When meeting at pick-up points, if a participant’s transportation is more than fi ve (5) minutes late for pick up/drop off time, three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. If a participant is removed from transportation, they will receive a refund for those fees. Based upon registrations, activities may be moved to an alternate location to help facilitate transportation needs.

High Demand Classes & Wait Lists Sometimes programs may fi ll before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a next to the title. If a class fi lls, the participant will automatically be placed on a wait list. Participants will be contacted if placed on the wait list and a space becomes available.

Registration Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail to the TRS main offi ce, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to registration date. Registration begins:

8:00 AM, Monday August 26, 2013

Refunds & Credits In the event that TRS cancels a class, participants will automatically receive a full credit to their account. Credits will be carried on the account and can be used toward future courses and activities. If a participant would like a refund, notify TRS and a refund will be processed within three weeks if the amount is over $25. Credit amounts under $25 will remain on accounts for future use. If a participant must withdraw from a course, they must be withdrawn before the class begins. A participant will receive a refund if another TRS participant can fi ll your spot. Credits for trips or special events (such as theatre productions where tickets are purchased in advance) cannot be given aft er tickets are purchased unless your place can be fi lled.

Guidelines for Inclusion: For participation in general recreation classes, with assistance from TRS staff , a participant must:• Meet registration requirements of the selected class, ie. age, residency, prerequisites.• Be able to adhere to the rules of conduct.• Be able to follow simple directions and be able to communicate your basic needs.• Have the ability to tolerate and function in appropriate class sizes based on type of program.• Be able to participate in the selected activity for the majority of the scheduled time.

* All accommodation requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program.* Transportation is not provided for Inclusion Services.

Payment OptionsPayments must accompany registration and may be made by cash, check, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) or money order; made payable to: Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. If mailing a check, call to confi rm your balance before you mail in your registration. Registration is not considered complete until class fee is received.

Financial Assistance:Rec Bucks is a program which will provide a waiver or reduction of fees to residents who have demonstrated fi nancial need.

Mingle Garden Project

TRS is proud of the Mingle participants that worked on the gardens at the Brambleton Center this year. With a grant from Valley Beautiful and support from the Master Gardeners & the 4-H Extension Offi ce, the Mingle participants planted fl owers in the front Brambleton Center beds, and grew a vegetable garden facing Brambleton Avenue. This group did a great job and were able to enjoy the tomatoes, zucchinis, radishes, and other vegetables they grew.

Thanks to all who participated in this project.
