Hi and welcome to a new and particularly exciting edition of TRQ.

While winter is typically the quieter period of the racing season, we’ve ramped things up this year with the launch of the first statewide search for SA’s most stylish racegoer - Fashion at The Races. We’ll give you all the details on how you can have a chance to win not just the notoriety, but a VW Polo.

Balaklava is set to be another stellar success this year – with the fashion stakes set to be high once again and the traditional corporate crowd expected to be even bigger this year. Irish Race Day will insight some friendly rivalry between Australia and Ireland, while Roxby Downs will come alive again as the most remote race meeting on the South Australian racing calendar.

On another note, it’s time for me to say goodbye to The Races as I move on from my role and welcome our new Industry Marketing Manager Jane Wellington to the fold. Jane comes to The Races from News Ltd and is looking forward to being a part of all that’s happening in SA racing.

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, so it seemed only natural to

celebrate our favourite girls (our Mums of course!) in the SAFM Diamond Lounge at Betfair Derby Day this year.

Mum-to-be Hayley Pearson of SAFM 107.1’s Hayley, Craig and Rabbit, led the way in a gorgeous Liza Emanuele number, while Craig and

Rabbit stepped up to the plate in tailored suits from The Suit Co. Fashion was the name of the day with stunning Finesse Models giving us a taste of winter trends.

Almost 150 racegoers enjoyed the indulgent surrounds of the SAFM Diamond Lounge, with prime viewing of the winning post from the Tapestry Pavilion keeping punters on their toes. Continuing the decadent

theme, guests were treated to Jurlique pamper sessions and given the chance to win a $2,000 diamond necklace from Karran’s of Hyde Park.

Fashion at The Races Ambassador Kate Freebairn also made an appearance to judge the best dressed on the day – with classic Derby Day black and white proving a winner.

Nova’s breakfast team of Matt, Dan and Maz were the life of the party at

this year’s Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup.

As hosts of The Nova Stables, the threesome ran games and entertainment alongside the Nova Casanovas and DJs Track Team and Loot & Plunder.

More than 1800 people packed The Nova Stables on the day, with Matt, Dan and Maz making a great first impression at their first ever Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup day.

In the lead up to the Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup, Matt, Dan & Maz adopted ‘Hercules’ as their mascot. They sent him out on the streets to meet and greet fans and give away tickets to The Nova Stables. Did you spot him in your local ‘neeeeeeeiggghhhhbourhood’?

Oakbank puts smiles On the faces Of

More than 4000 racegoers enjoyed a stellar day trackside at

Oakbank for this year’s Little Heroes Foundation Family Picnic Race Day on April 2.

The day, which was held for the first time in 2010, raised funds for the iconic local organisation’s world-leading ‘Life After Diagnosis’ Survivorship Program.

The picnic atmosphere was complemented by plenty of action on the track – with a great field of horses competing in a full program.

Oakbank Racing Club Chairman John Glatz said it was excellent to see so many people attend the event to raise funds for a good local cause.

“It’s so satisfying to see the crowd enjoying the races in a nice relaxed atmosphere at the same time as supporting the Little Heroes Foundation.”

The bean counters are still tallying the donations, but the Club has its fingers crossed for more than $20,000 raised for Little Heroes across the four days of racing at Oakbank.

South Australia has produced some glamorous racegoers over the years, but

nothing like we’re about to see this season when the fashion stakes reach a whole new level.

Fifteen finalists from every corner of SA will become the faces of the inaugural 2011/2012 Fashion at The Races competition, a year-long, statewide style search featuring South Australian racing’s richest ever fashion prize pool - you could WIN a Volkswagen Polo hatch auto!

Fashion at The Races finalists will be selected over 26 South Australian race events throughout the year, culminating at South Australian Derby Day in May 2012 at Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide – where the winner of the Polo will be judged.

Thanks to renowned South Australian designer and event partner Liza Emanuele, the runner-up of Fashion at The Races will also go home a winner with a $3000 Liza Emanuele luxury wardrobe and styling session.

judge at SA Derby Day in 2012 together with Liza and celebrity guest judges to be announced later this year.

And it’s not just for the ladies - men who take their fashion seriously also have a crack at the major prize!

The first Fashion at The Races finalist was selected on May 22 from over 70 entrants in the annual Fashions on the Field competition at this year’s Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup. Nineteen-year-old Tahlia Gabrielli set the bar high and offered a taste of what is to come.

“We were excited to launch Fashion at The Races in Mount Gambier – Tahlia and the girls from the South East were among the best-dressed racegoers we’ve ever judged and set a very high standard for the rest of the year,” Thoroughbred Racing South Australia Marketing Manager Anna Falkiner said.

“With regional pride and incredible prizes up for grabs, Fashion at The Races will add to the excitement and competitive spirit of even the smallest racing events in South Australia.

In addition to the prizes offered by the provincial and country clubs at various Fashions on the Field competitions around the state, finalists will also be treated to two nights’ accommodation at Oaks Plaza Pier Glenelg and hospitality for two at the SA Derby Day

Entrants to Fashion at The Races must be 18 or over and will be judged on appropriateness of the outfit for the particular event, originality and confidence, attention to detail with accessories, appreciation of current fashion trends, grooming and deportment.

Fashion at The Races Final next year thanks to the South Australian Jockey Club.

And the great part is, if you miss out at one event, you can try again at another one of the 26 events. The winners of some of the larger meetings such as the Mount Gambier Gold Cup will qualify automatically to the Final, while other country Cup Fashion on the Field winners will have to progress to semi-finals.

She’s SA racing’s newest style icon.

With a natural eye for fashion and a

look that typifies race day glamour, Ten News reporter Kate Freebairn is the newest member of The Races’ team and the Official Ambassador of Fashion at The Races – the search for South Australia’s best dressed racegoer.

And to say she’s looking forward to her new role would be an understatement.

“I always have an eye out for unique styles, which is what Fashion at The Races is all about,” Kate said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what South Australia has to offer.”

As Ambassador, Kate will travel to events around the state to help scope the best talent.

And with a natural eye for fashion – she knows exactly what to look for when it comes to finding the quintessential race day look.

“It’s important to work with the feel of the particular race you’re attending – for example, dressy heels work for a city race day like Adelaide Cup while you’d go for classy boots if you are heading out to the Clare races,” she said.

“If you have a show-stopping hat or fascinator it usually works best to keep your outfit simple – and always make sure the colour of the headpiece works with your dress. Matching your shoes and bag... bonus points!

“And for the guys – a special tie is often all you need to set off a classic suit, but race days are also a perfect opportunity to accessorise – I love hats!.”

Having attended race events since she was a child, Kate’s looking forward to getting amongst all the action over the coming months.

“I remember my parents taking me to the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival from when I was young – I’d spend the day running around with friends while our parents set up their deck chairs, picnic rugs and bottles of bubbly,” she said.

“There is just so much variety in SA racing. Each racing event and experience is different.

“I love the glamour and excitement of the big events like the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville, but I also love getting out to the country – country racing has a special charm and attending events with a big group of friends is just so much fun.”

As for what Kate will

Fashion’sbe wearing – while she always looks the part, she’s particularly looking forward to being dressed by Liza Emanuele – one of South Australia’s most famed fashion exports.

“There’s nothing I like more than getting glammed up for a day at The Races,” she said.

“Fashion at The Races will definitely lift the fashion stakes at South Australian race meetings.

“After all, who doesn’t want to win a VW Polo?”

Attracting around 2,000 visitors a year, the Roxby Downs Outback Cup brings

new meaning to the phrase ‘off the beaten track’. This remote, family friendly event is also high on glamour.

With the titles of ‘Ms and Mr Outback’ – and a place in the Fashion at the Races final in Adelaide at stake, the Exact Fashions on the Field competition is a highlight of the week,

Race Day at Morphettville Racecourse your countrymen are going to need your support.

On Saturday September 3, our Aussie jockeys will take on their Irish rivals as part of a special annual tradition – the Australia versus Ireland Jockey Challenge.

Since 1986, four jockeys from each country have battled it out over a series of races to earn bragging rights for another year. What happens when one of your horses wins a race?

Being a stud farm, we are in the business of breeding and selling our stock. If a horse that we have bred wins a race, we’ll make an effort to congratulate all involved including the owner and trainer. If it is a significant race, the horse and all connections will be highlighted in the racing media. There is no better way to promote a stud than with the success of the progeny you have bred.

Where’s your favourite place to watch a race?

There’s nothing better than watching a race live at the track, especially when you have a runner. The great thing about going to the races is the interaction you get with clients, colleagues, participants and of course, the horses. If I can’t make it to the track, then there is a very good coverage of the races available via cable TV on Sky Channel and TVN.

What makes Black Caviar such a successful horse?

Black Caviar has some freakish traits that makes her a ‘once in a lifetime’ horse. Some of these qualities include: a very high-speed, great acceleration, a powerful physique (she weighs well over 500kg which is very large for a mare), a huge length of stride and a strong competitive spirit. Basically said, she is a superior athlete.

Have you ever seen anything as exciting as Black Caviar race before?

She is certainly one of the most exciting horses I’ve seen and will go down in the history books as one of the greats. Makybe Diva captured the imagination of us all when she won a record three-straight Melbourne Cups. Up until now, she was considered the nation’s greatest female galloper of modern times. A lot of people that can remember back as far as the 1950’s will compare Black Caviar to icons such as Vain (previously hailed as Australia’s undisputed sprinting champion) and Tulloch (whom many will say was Australia’s greatest horse). Dulcify was perhaps the best horse to be trained out of Lindsay Park and gave C.S Hayes great excitement and thrill with his record-breaking win in the Cox Plate.

It is quite difficult to compare great racehorses of different eras, which for me says that we should enjoy them all for what they are...and Black Caviar is very special.

What is the routine of a trainer on race day?

A trainer will do his/her regular work in the morning on race day which involves overseeing track work and management of their stable. From here, a trainer will normally ensure that staff are prepared for the day ahead. Transport for the horses to get to the track is co-ordinated,

equipment is packed and the horses are given a final check over to ensure everything is okay. On a busy race day, it’s a case of all hands on deck with all of the staff assuming their roles to ensure the day runs as smoothly and successfully as possible.

The trainer will then head to the racecourse. Their role on race day revolves around horses and clients. Races are generally run every 35-40 minutes which gives them enough time to saddle up/prepare their runners and spend time with their connections.

The ‘mounting yard’ is where trainers, jockeys and owners will gather 15 minutes before a race starts to go over race tactics. In a big race, this is where you need your horses to have better nerves than most owners!

Post-race, the trainer and owners will head into a private room to view the replay, enjoy some hospitality and analyse the race. If a trainer is lucky enough to have a winner, they will generally be greeted by the media (TV and print) for a short interview after the race.

Once this is done, it’s time to saddle up the next runner and do it all again!
