CumminsInc.doesnotrecommendanyspecificbrandofliquidgasketremover.Ifa liquidgasketremoverisused,checkthedirectionstomakesurethematerialbeing cleanedwillnotbeharmed. Airpoweredgasketscraperscansavetimebutcaremustbetakentonotdamagethe surface.Theangledpartofthescrapermustbeagainstthegasketsurfacetopreventthe bladefromdiggingintothesurface.Usingairpoweredgasketscrapersonpartsmadeof softmaterialstakesskillandcaretopreventdamage. Donotscrapeorbrushacrossthegasketsurfaceifatallpossible.

Sol entandAcidCleaningSeveralsolventandacidtypecleanerscanbeusedtocleanthedisassembledengine parts(otherthanpistons.SeeBelow).Experiencehasshownthatthebestresultscan beobtainedusingacleanerthatcanbeheatedto90 to95 Celsius(180 to200 Fahrenheit).Keroseneemulsionbasedcleanershavedifferenttemperature specifications,seebelow.Acleaningtankthatprovidesaconstantmixingandfiltering ofthecleaningsolutionwillgivethebestresults.CumminsInc.doesnotrecommend anyspecificcleaners.Alwaysfollowthecleanermanufacturer'sinstructions.Removeall thegasketmaterial,orings,andthedepositsofsludge,carbon,etc.,withawirebrushor scraperbeforeputtingthepartsinacleaningtank.Becarefulnottodamageanygasket surfaces.Whenpossible,steamcleanthepartsbeforeputtingtheminthecleaningtank.

WARNINGWhenusingsolvents,acids,oralkalinematerialsforcleaning,followthe manufacturersrecommendationsforuse.Weargogglesandprotectiveclothingto reducethepossibilityofpersonalinjury. Experiencehasshownthatkeroseneemulsionbasedcleanersperformthebestto cleanpistons.Thesecleanersshouldnotbeheatedtotemperatureinexcessof77 C (170 F).Thesolutionbeginstobreakdownattemperaturesinexcessof82 C(180 F) andwillbelesseffective.
