Wow. 2011 is shaping up to be a busy year for everyone. Lots of our members have been seen and / or will be seen at multiple Parrothead events: Stars Fell on Alabama, Flipperstock, Phlocking of the Phaithful, our own Christmas in the Caribbean, Stars on the Water. We have over 30 members registered for Meeting of the Minds.

Our club collected $2,626.00 for Franklin County Children’s Services Holiday Wish Program along with a few boxes of toys. We aren’t limiting ourselves to the Partying with a Purpose though. We have volunteered at Ronald McDonald House and picked up garbage along I-71.

I have to say thank you to all our club members for the donations of their time, money and effort that go into all of these activities and help keep our club a meaningful and vital one in the PH Nation. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Changes in Attitudes, business meetings and other club activities!

Phlockings outside Columbus

It all started when I saw a friend’s post on Facebook. She mentioned reserving her room for Flipperstock. Flipperstock? Hmmm. That’s in St. Louis. I could drive there. It’s a weekend. Hmmm. I wouldn’t miss any work. I could do that. I checked with Keith to see if anything else was happening that weekend. Nope? YAY. Plans were made.

Another friend (also named Katie) saw Chris-tine’s and my posts on Facebook. Asked if she could be a roommate – the more the merrier. I then got a call from a friend in Akron. She, too, was rooming with us. She was driving and wanted to know if we could pool our re-sources. Seven and a half hours of not driving alone, with rising gas prices? Of course.

Then, Teresa Burchwell and Sue Ridolfo from our club decided they wanted to attend as

well. ROAD TRIP! Oh, yeah. The trip began Friday at 10:00 am, as Michelle did not want to miss Bob Karwin. He started playing at 6:00. We had a beautiful day for a ride. We listened to CDs by Kenny Chesney and trop-rock artists as well as Radio Margaritaville. At one point we contacted the DJ at RM and requested an artist. The DJ was kind enough to mention Flipperstock and play a song by the requested artist. After a few stops, we got to our destination with no problems. We were able to unload and unpack prior to heading to the Main Ballroom to listen to Bob Karwin. As always, he was very entertaining and put on a good show. At one point, Katie Crowder (one of my roommates) and I confused Mr. Karwin. He asked who Leigh Ann’s friend “Katie” was. Well. We both are. Hmm. We wonder what Leigh Ann has been saying about which one of us.

To my great delight, two former Buckeye PHC members attended the fundraiser with mutual friends. It was wonderful visiting with Stephanie and Mark Sarka for the weekend. Teresa provided great entertainment for Stephanie. Steph was playing matchmaker between Teresa and a member of the Clinton County PHC, Carl. If you attend MoTM, you may see him and Teresa wandering around together. And Mark? Well, Mark provided entertainment for the rest of us.

The Buckeye PHC was well represented. Not just Sue and Teresa and I were there. Jack & Dianne Garrett made the drive as well. They brought their pup, Freddie, with them. I never did get to meet the little fellow.

The girls and I missed the band Rock the Boat as we were hungry and needed sustenance. We went in search of food. We found it at the Train Wreck. Good food, good prices, good fun.

We made it back to the ballroom for PHINS and lots of dancing. Paul Rausch had some vocal issues all weekend. His voice was very hoarse. Fortunately, the room had plenty of singers willing to jump on stage and help him out. Bob Karwin came back on stage, Don Middlebrook hopped up there. One of the funniest moments was when Karwin & Mid-dlebrook began rapping together. I think the bands finally stopped playing around 1:00. Lights did not go out in my room until well after 3:00 am. I had been up for 23 hours by that time. When will I learn?

The next morning dawned bright. And early. It was an absolutely gorgeous day. We were up and about with our balcony door open when the music started playing on the patio below. We spent most of the afternoon going back and forth from the patio to the balcony. We did toss some candy down to the musi-cians who were back stage. 12 Volt Band played with their friends – Bob Karwin, Don Middlebrook, Chris Baer, Keith Sykes, and Rock the Boat. Michael Crawley AKA Craw-

daddy performed with just about everyone over the weekend. He was very entertaining on and off stage.

I was up in our room, when someone started singing a John Frinzi song, Beautiful Fingers. But wasn’t John Frinzi singing. Who could it be? I ventured out to the balcony and looked. It was Keith Sykes. He had a lovely perform-ance.

Jim Hoehn played later in the afternoon. I was lucky enough to hear him play one of my fa-vorites, Bone Island Mambo. He drew inspira-tion for the song from one of Tom Corcoran’s books about Key West.

We went over to Pujols 5 for a light supper while the music was still playing. Their patio was next to the hotel patio. Our table was very close to the Sarkas. We all behaved well and did not get into a food fight, although we were greatly tempted.

The music moved back to the ballroom for Don Middlebrook, Jerry Diaz & Hanna’s Reef and Bill Wharton aka the SAUCE BOSS! Much more dancing and fun was had. And several of us got to stir the gumbo. Unfortu-nately I was stirring as Bill Wharton dumped in the crawfish. Those beady little eyes kept watching me as I stirred the pot. Eeeww. The gumbo was quite tasty, though. I made sure NOT to get a crawfish in my bowl.

Now the main focus of the party was good music and making friends, however, they did have a “little” fundraising event going on with raffles and silent auction items. A few items that were auctioned and raffled off were a beautiful handmade quilt that incorporated all of Jimmy Buffett’s album covers, Corona items, Margaritaville items, and the opportu-nity to have your name in Tom Corcoran’s latest Alex Rutledge novel. Pete “the Mail-man” Trainor won both the quilt AND his name in Mr. Corcoran’s book. Now, there is no guarantee of Pete’s namesake being an upstanding citizen of the Keys. So when Alex Rutledge’s next adventure is published, if you purchase it, be sure to look for Pete. Will he be a murderer? A thief? A cop? A drunk on the streets of Key West? Only Tom Corcoran knows.

…...Continued from page 5

The generous participants at Flipperstock donated a total of $5,000.00. The money raised was donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. WWP serves to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of se-verely injured service men and women; help severely injured service members aid and assist each other; and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. A worthy cause indeed.

Now, we did miss signing up for the 3rd an-nual bus trip to the Waffle House and the 2nd annual Pub Crawl / Margarita Search. Well. The crawl started long before we arrived on Friday. I do believe we may have to get to St. Louis a little earlier next year. Now we may have missed these special events, but we did not miss the Sunday Brunch. Hmmm. I won-der why?

Keith Sykes and John Frinzi played the Sun-day Brunch at Pujols 5. Food was delish and the entertainment? Well, it wasn’t bad at all. This was the first time I really got a chance to listen to Keith’s music that he did not write with Mr. Buffett. He has some really

lovely songs. One song was so poignant and hit so close to home, I had to purchase the CD with the song on it. It’s called “Broken Home”. As Keith was singing the song, the room got very quiet as everyone was listen-ing intently to the lyrics. Once he was done, I don’t know if anyone had a dry eye in the house.

Of course, we all had to quickly say our good-byes afterward and load up in the SUV so we would get back to Ohio at a reasonable hour. Unfortunately, I, as navigator, thought I had

a brilliant idea to take I-70 straight through St. Louis instead of the bypass. Unbeknownst to us, the bridge was shut down for repairs and detours were in place. Well, at least we saw the St. Louis Arch. Oops. I think Mi-chelle made it home by 11:00 after dropping me off about 9:00.

Overall, a great time was had, we discovered new bands to follow, and made new friends with different clubs. Sue, Teresa and I are looking for-ward to our next adventure.

Phlockings outside Ohio

Phlocking of the Phaithful (or Phlocking for

short) can best be described as an Ohio mini

version of Meeting of the Minds (MOTM).

This annual Trop Rock four day event is held

on Put in Bay on Lake Erie in June has been

going on 17 years. It attracts a couple hun-

dred or so parrotheads from all over the coun-

try. Phlocking is run by really warm and

friendly "Pittsburghers," Pat and Dan Kaley

who make sure newcomers feel welcome and

get to meet others.

Most of the Phlocking events and music are at

Mr. Ed's Bar: either inside on a stage, on the

front patio, on the rooftop bar or at the Tiki Bar

near the pool. Many of the Key West MOTM

musicians were performing during the four

days (June 9 - 12) and included our own club

member K.D. Moore, Latitude (Tom and Mi-

chelle Becker), Sunny Jim White, John Frinzi

and Jim Hoehn. The Junkaroo Brothers,

Johnny Rodriguez and John Reno were new

to us.

The liveliest and most spirited performers

were a trio called Corn Beef and Curry from

Pittsburgh who played a diverse range of

music including Trop Rock, folk, country,

Celtic, classical and rock.

Similar to MOTM, we all received Goody Bags

and bought raffle tickets. Musicians sold and

autographed CDs for the folks without ipods.

The event's main fundraiser this year was to

assist in the purchase of a special van for a

performer's wife who sadly was stricken with

MS. Over $4,000 was raised for this good

cause with more funds pledged.

Jackie and I had not

been to Put in Bay

since 1974 when we

would bicycle around

the slightly inhabited

island. We brought

our bikes again, but

were in for quite a

surprise with the bus-

tle of 2011. I am sure

there are at least two thousand golf carts

tooling around and even a few driven soberly.

We also were amazed at how the Trop Rock

Music was quickly replaced in Mr. Ed's at 9

PM each night by the techno loud beats of the

deejays and a dolled up twenty and thirty

something crowd who take over the down-

town. We found the contrast interesting but

the variety of body art (tattoos) even more so.

On Friday night at nine PM the Phlocking

music continued at an outside Tiki bar and at

another locale by the water on Saturday night.

The music kept going to at least Midnight.

We had a great time with lots to do when not

at the bars. Put in Bay has several shops,

good eateries, a winery and more. The $75

registration fee includes all the music and two

tasty buffets: one a barbecued steak meal.

Also included in the fee is a special happy

hour for participants with lots of a potent New

Orleans drink, the Hand Grenade, made with

a secret recipe.... grain alcohol, gin, vodka,

rum and melon liqueur.

Aside from all the partying, we were able to

find a great B and B, a mile and a half from

downtown, a wonderful woodsy retreat to

listen to crickets while sipping a glass of wine

when we took breaks from the boat drinks and

music. Check out this link when they later

update for next year or the annual winter

Partying with a purpose

Christmas in the Caribbean 2011 broke new ground. Gordy’s

partnered with us in our annual fund-raiser event by helping to

advertise and donating admission fees . Their generosity al-

lowed us to extend the hours and feature two performers, not

to mention increase our proceeds. This year we presented

Franklin County Children Services $2,626 and a couple boxes

of toys for their Holiday Wish Program. As usual, the Buckeye

Parrots were generous with their support and all hands were

on deck to make this a fun and successful event despite mov-

ing the party inside due to rainy weather that has prevailed

throughout the spring and summer in Ohio! Rain or shine, we

party with a purpose! Mike Miller, a well-known Trop Rock

musician, a former member of the Boat Drunks, entertained us

with a repertoire of Trop Rock favorites. Stadium 11 then fol-

lowed and rocked us into the night with favorite classic rock

tunes. Everyone also enjoyed the commemorative bottle

openers! Way to go Ohio! And special thanks to Gordy’s!
