Pictured above from left, area 13 governor Daly Horne holds a copy of Tropic
City Toastmasters very first minutes . Next from the left is; Bevin Irvine the
clubs our new number one, Karen Ruhl the clubs new number 2 (she seems
to be holding the wrong number), Betty Sheret (incoming secretary) and Clive
Simpson (incoming parliamentarian and speech craft co-ordinator.)To the far right is techno savvy, Anita Smith (incoming VPPR) who knows her
way around a laptop, even though she does not type with the correct fingers.
Finishing off the picture, in front is our smiling outgoing president Denise
Devine.
From Typewriters to LaptopsTropic City Toastmasters met for a doubly special meeting on Tuesday the
26th of June, meeting for their 1400th meeting and Handover Dinner
(Handover Dinner story on page 4).
For the occasion incoming club secretary, Betty Sheret brought in a few of her
old typewriters, to remind us of how the minutes were made in the good old
days. Those members, like Clive Simpson and Bevin Irvine, who were around
for some of the early meetings, told stories about typing up the minutes, and
cutting and pasting with scissors and glue and then photocopying the finished
product.
Thankfully we have moved from typewriters to laptops, Betty no longer needs
to lug one of those heavy typewriter to club meetings anymore. She can use
the club laptop to type up her minutes instead.

Outgoing Presidents Report June 2012
The year as I see it was a very successful one
for Tropic City. The most important aspect to a
good Toast Master
meeting is to have fun.
Yes, we learn andachieve but if it were
not fun, none of us
would come. Did we
have fun in 2011/12? I
say yes.
The year was packed with events from the
prestigious 30th Birthday celebration of our
club through to themed dress-up evenings forimportant dates like St Patricks Day.
I have had a brilliant year as President of this
remarkable club. The dedication of every
member was astounding and the executive
team this year were a bunch of shining stars.
The accomplishment of President Distin-
guished is recognition to our club for your
efforts.
We have our speech competitions coming up
very soon. I encourage you to participate. This
year I was fortunate enough to attend both the
Division (in Mackay) and the District (in Bris-
bane). This year we will be hosting the North-ern Division conference right here in Towns-
ville. Imagine the excitement of competing.
So start writing your international and humor-
ous speech, you could be the next winner.
I wish the incoming committee every success. I
congratulate Bevin on his appointment as Pres-
ident. We are in safe hands and I know the year
ahead will be eventful, fun and come with arange of new undertakings and accolades.
Enjoy the year ahead and I am truly looking
forward to being the IPP and New Member
Mentor. Thank you for affording me the oppor-
tunity to be Tropic Citys leader in 2011/12.
Happy Toast Mastering, Denise Devine
Tropic City Toastmasters take on the Tango
Once a year the members of TropicCity meet not to conduct the usualeducational meeting but to take onthe tango.
Our charming hosts and dance ex-perts Barry and Lyn Saunders
(pictured to the right) watched overthe group as we waltzed the night(and the pizza) away...onetwo...three... four.
It would seem some of our mem-bers are in training for dancingwith the stars and others well letsjust say... step together... step to-gether... Slide... Slide... turn andturn. Oh Im dizzy again! Barry
and Lyn you make it look so easy Iam truly in awe.
Apart from the few sore toes it was a wonderful night of pizza, wine, friends and dancing. I amcounting the weeks until we next take on the tango. More photos on page 8

Outgoing Vice President of Educations Report 2012
I have enjoyed my position as your Vice
President of Education (VPE). I feel the year
has gone quickly, which
goes to show that I have
loved every bit of it.
The position of VPE, like
all jobs, paid or unpaid,
comes with its own set
of challenges. I am con-
vinced that for me the
positive benefits have outweighed the
challenges.
Once I worked out to look for a balance be-
tween personal, professional and Toastmas-
ters life of the members, it was easy to
achieve the goals for the Club I set out to
reach. There is a fine balance between
work/personal/Toastmasters life. Once we
get to recognise this and respect it, our ap-
proach to tasks and towards the members
becomes a lot easier.
Keeping this upmost in my mind I was able
to get the Clubs goal to be Presidents Dis-
tinguished Club, by March this year. Some
Toastmasters think Distinguished Club Pro-
gramme (DCP) is overrated and can be ma-
nipulated. Of course, it can be manipulated,
but I think that DCP is a guide by which
members know how well they are progress-
ing and it is a barometer for the Club to
move forward. DCP is a landmark of every
club for its growth and development.
As your VPE I was also interested in raising
the profile of our Club. This year we saw
Toastmasters from various other clubs come
to judge our competition and we reciprocat-
ed accordingly. We had plenty of interaction
with other clubs we had Halloween theme
meeting, an interclub debate, some of our
members were able to contribute by being
test speakers for District training and club
competitions, collect raffles prizes and run
the event and deliver a International style
presentation.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of my job
was that I got to know all the members well.
I got a great kick out of discovering what
made you guys buzz and tick. This is the
part of my role I am going to miss dearly.
I want to take the opportunity to wish Bevin
and his executive an excellent year and I
know with Karen as the incoming VPE the
Club is in good hands.

Bevin Irvine President
Life Member Bevin Irvinejoined Tropic City in Sep 1991 when Ross Trigger
was the President and the Club met at the Hermit Park Hotel. What are Bevins
goals for this year? When get motivated I will complete my High Performance
Leadership for my DTM one day. But now I am delighted to hear members and
see members stand confidently in front of an audience and communicate.
For this year Imagine the Possibilities
Karen Ruhl Vice President Education
Mathematics loving Karen Ruhljoined Tropic City Toastmasters in May 2007 to
gain confidence and improve her communication skills. Over the last five years
she has taken on the roles of Sargent at Arms and Vice President of Public Rela-
tions and gained ACB and ALB. Karen chose to take on the role of VPE this year as
she is keen to help her fellow Toasties achieve their educational goals. She is alsokeen to become better organised and learn about what happens at Toastmasters
further up the food chain.
Jane Fallon vice President of Membership
Jane Fallonwas born in Sheffield, England in 1956, the youngest of 4 and the on-
ly girl. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's, She took up fine art and discovered
a passion for painting. But that wasn't enough - she needed something to get the
brain working that also builds friendships. That's where Toastmasters entered my
life. Jane has now presented 15 speeches and taking on the challenge of VP
(Membership). She is heading back to England to see her brothers to surprise
them on their 60th,but Jane will return all-fired-up so watch out!
Anita is Tropic Citys other mathematician (the quiet one). As VPPR, which in-
volves the promotion of Tropic City Toastmasters to the wider community, she
sees her role as a way of further increasing her communication skills through writ-
ing (which she hopes will help with her thesis). She is also very excited to learn
what is involved in maintaining a web page and she encourages other to share this
experience by writing articles for the Tropic City newsletter and website.
Maureen Pilgrim Treasurer
Maureen Pilgrim member of Tropic City Toastmasters since 2003. She has
served as President, Secretary, VPE and now Treasurer.
She has also served on numerous organising committees for conferences and other
functions. Maureen is married and has four beautiful daughters, one grand-
daughter and another grandchild due in November.
She loves reading, working or sitting in the garden and of course

Tim Grovesjoined Toastmasters a little over two years ago. Not only were dear
friends already members of Tropic City, his social calendar was pretty empty, and
after a couple of visits as a guest, Tim realised that this would be a great way to
spend Tuesday nights. Joining Toastmasters was another step in helping overcome
a bout of depression . Thanks to the supportive and encouraging atmosphere ofTropic City, Tims self confidence began to return. Tim now works part time in liq-
uor retail, studies part time at JCU and is excited to be a part of Tropic
City's Executive Committee.
Tim Groves Sargent at Arms
Being Sergeant at Arms was a big challenge last year for Betty and she very thank-
ful for the other members how on occasions had already set up the room. I am
hoping to complete at least 3 speeches this year. I enjoy Toastmasters and love lis-
tening to all the speeches that our creative members deliver.
Outside Toastmasters, Betty received Life Membership of North Barrier Branch at
their 75th Dinner and Awards Presentation evening for her dedication to Lifesav-
ing. She is looking forward to my role as secretary this term.
Betty Sheret Secretary
The New Executive Committee Cont.
Denise Devine Immediate Past President
Denise Devinebecame a member of Tropic City Toastmasters in October
2008. Currently Denise is CC /ALB. Her goal is to become Distinguished Toast
Master (DTM). As a step toward this, Denise will be the convenor for the 2013
Northern Division Conference. She is going to use this event to attain her High Per-
formance Leader (HPL).
This year as IPP and New Member Mentor, she hopes to encourage new members
to have goals and be involved in club activities. Her personal goals are to achieve a
CC, CL, ACB and HPL in this Toast Master year.
Clive Simpson Speech-craft coordinator and parliamentarian
Self confessed party animal Clive Simpson joined Tropic City in November 1983
[last century] because they all looked like they were enjoying themselves. Toastmas-
ters has been the one singular thing that has made me successful in most endeavours
that have attempted. The art, and it is an art ,of successfully communicating with all
and sundry, is, in my mind the most important achievement to which a person may
allude.
Savvy Francis Social Director
Fun loving Savvy Francis has been in Toastmasters on and off since 1995. As your
social event director Savvy is looking to organize two main social events during the
year. She wants to continue having the 5th Tuesday of the month as a social meeting
as well. She will be looking to promote activities like dance, arts, craft, sport and
games. The Club as a whole will be looking for your complete participation, enthusi-
asm towards the social event and your talent to have a good time!

This month it is my pleasure to introduce the last two new assets to
our club in my role as vice president of membership.
The marvellous merchandiser Jennifer Pearce joined the fold of Tropic
City Toastmasters in May. Jennifer came to us looking for confidenceand to overcome her nerves and she is well on her way. Jennifer lists
reading and gardening as her interests, but most of all meeting and
making new friends. Well Tropic City is just the place for Jennifer to
do just that.
Welcome to the clan Jennifer.

New Member Certificate from Denise
Dave Hoey is Tropic Citys very own fire fight-
er. Dave will find plenty of fire in Tropic City
but not the kind he deals with on the job. This
friendly fire fighter lists bee keeping and wine
drinking as some of his favourite pass times.
Well Dave you have come to the right club,
with the wine drinking you will find Tropic
City is the place to be
As for the bee keeping, hmmm or should I saybuzzzz, you might have to make do with a
spelling bee.
Welcome aboard Dave.
I would like to thank all the members of Tropic City for your support this year. The enthusiasm of the
clubs members made my job as vice president of membership not only an enjoyable role but an easy
one. When a visitor comes along and witnesses the camaraderie and support this club has to offer it is
no wonder they stay. To my fellow executives a big thanks. It truly is a team effort to attract, convert
and maintain club members. Karen as VPPR created an awesome internet door for prospective mem-bers to come through not to mention the secretary who keeps them in the loop, the treasurer who sub-
mits the dues, the SAA who creates a welcoming atmosphere and the VPE who gets them on the pro-
gram. Last, but by no means least, the president Denise who guided me throughout the year and assist-
ed with Toastmasters International administration jobs.
This year has been a rewarding year and I have enjoyed serving the club in my membership role. I am
looking forward to the coming year as Vice President of Public Relations and everything I will learn
from the role with the knowledge I have an entire club supporting me. I welcome Jane to the role
knowing the entire Tropic City club is there to support her.
Thank you all for your support and friendship.
Cheers Anita (practicing VPPR)
