The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society Inc was organized in April 1958 to promote interest and provide education in the earth sci-ences in historical artifacts in jewelry-making and all forms of the lapidary arts Field trips the club workshop monthly meetings and other activities provide opportunities for life-long learning Meetings The second Monday of each month at the College Hill Presbyterian Church 7th and Columbia Street Tulsa OK Refreshments and coffee begin at 6 pm Pebble Pups meet at 615 and the membership business meeting and program commence at 7pm ALL WELCOME

A Note from the Presidenthellip

Thank you to Holly Proctor for arranging such a wonderful field trip to Redbud Valley The climb was exhausting but the trip was worth the beautiful view I even found a cool impression of a brachiopod After we completed the hike we went to a road cut that Holly had found and it was very productive Pictures from the field trip can be found in the Stones amp Bones section If you have not been on a field trip I would highly encour-age you to attend There is literally something for everyone

Our new Education Committee will meet monthly at 615 pm before each General Meeting We are meeting upstairs but there is an elevator for those that canrsquot quite manage the stairs We would love to have your input on how to fulfill our clubrsquos mis-sion to ldquopromote interest and provide education in the earth sciences in historical arti-facts in jewelry-making and all forms of the lapidary artsrdquo We are currently working on a project to provide mineral and fossil identification boxes to all of the elementary schools in Tulsa County Everyone is invited to join us

We need volunteers to do an audit of the club finances Please tell Jerry Nagel or myself if you can assist with this important task

This monthrsquos snacks will be provided at the General meeting by those members whose last names begin with A-E Thank you in advance for bringing me yummy treats Ha Ha

Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society Junior Rockhound of the Year 2019

What do an eighth grade student at All Saints Catholic School a member of Boy

Scouts of America for seven years an active Pebble Pup of Tulsa Rock and Mineral

Society for the last two years an active field tripper a Future Rockhound of America

member with more than eight badges already to his name a repeat display entrant

in the Tulsa Rock and Mineral show and a competitive entrant with a trophy in the

same show and a willing volunteer and helper for the Tulsa Rock and Mineral show

ALL have in common They ALL pertain to 13-year old (14 in November) Adam Proc-

tor a quiet but productive young man who has participated in field trips both near

and far from Paris Texas to Peru Kansas and from Ada Oklahoma to Hot Springs

Arkansas including some trips for the purpose of scouting a good rock hunt site

Besides entering a competitive display in the TRMS show Adam was instrumental in

set-up and tear-down operations as well as giving his time and lending assistance to

various exhibits and activities of the show Adam was particularly drawn to fossils

but then he discovered crystals gems and geodes He prepared an impressive tro-

phy-winning educational case for display and competition highlighting his finds from

a club field trip With all this said it stands to reason we are proud to name this

young and future Rockhound TRMS Junior Rockhound of the year for 2019

Field Trip News

We had a wonderful turnout for our January trip We started with a

chilly hike at Redbud Valley The caves and limestone outcroppings

were great and there was more water in the spring than Irsquove ever

seen After our hike a few others joined us for some fossil hunting

at a roadcut We welcomed some new members and there were

some wonderful finds which included horn coral brachiopods and

of course some crinoid stems There was even some calcite druzy

Thanks to all who came out I hope you had as much fun as I did

As far as upcoming trips I donrsquot have anything set in stone yet We

are looking at a trip back to Paris TX for fossils a possible trip for

hieroglyphs near Sand Springs and I think we are in for a rose rock

hunt in the near future Keep an eye on Facebook and email for updates - Holly Proctor



Minutes of TRMS Board Meeting ndash January 7 2020

President Steve Ridgway called the meeting to order at 700 pm at College Hill Presbyterian Church Board members present Steve Ridgway Rebecca Ridgway Donna Loffer Holly Proctor Billy McBay Richard Jaeger Roberta Wagle Liz Thomas and Sharon Richards Absent Jamie Hurl and George Hill Guest present Jerry Nagel Minutes of previous meeting were postponed until next meeting Treasurerrsquos report was submitted by Liz Thomas She submitted a letter of resignation due to family health issues (see attached) The Board regretfully accepted her resignation After discussion Donna Loffer moved that the Board appoint Jerry Nagel to serve as Treasurer for the remainder of 2020 seconded by Richard Jaeger and motion carried unani-mously Jerry accepted The approval of the January Treasurerrsquos Report will be postponed until the next meeting Two of the clubrsquos CDs will expire before the next meeting Jerry will check with other banks to see if rates are any better an-ywhere else The Board authorized Jerry to move the funds if he finds a good rate Jerry also noted that we need to order more club ink pens for shows etc He will check with Julia Allande and Martha Rongey for suggestions of suppli-ers Reports Past-President No report 1st Vice-President No report Shop Foreman Billy McBay informed the Board that we are having an average of 8 or 9 people each workday He has completed the inventory of the items at the shop and will give to Treasurer Billy has begun work on the Educational boxes and will schedule a work day for the assembling once he has enough parts ready 2nd Vice-President Holly Proctor reported that the January Field Trip will be held on Saturday January 25 to Redbud Valley in Catoosa She making a flyer to hand out at the meeting next week Yearbook Roberta Wagle will contact Julia Allande for a report of Pebble Pups activities before she submits the year-book Show Liz announced that we have a contract finally from the fairgrounds and that the first meeting of the year for the Show committee will be held on Monday January 20 Old Business Editor Rebecca Ridgway asks that everyone adhere to the 20th of each month as the deadline for the next monthrsquos newsletter Mark your calendars New Business The Rockhound awards of the year will be announced at the January meeting Billy submitted a statement for $53088 from Bob Hicks for new wheels for the Genie machine at the shop In accord-ance with the Bylaws the Board recommends this amount for approval by the membership next Monday since it is over $500 Discussion was held on the needs for the club meeting next Monday The meeting was adjourned at 850 pm Respectfully submitted by Sharon Richards Secretary

Minutes of TRMS General Meeting January 13 2019

President Steve Ridgway called the meeting to order at 702 pm at College Hill Presbyterian Church Kimberly Perry Hospitality Chair welcomed 7 visitors and we had 71 in total attendance Six door prizes were given out by Paulino Allande Wayne Mouser moved for approval of the minutes of the December 9 2019 meeting as printed in the newsletter seconded by Leon Reeder and motion carried Roberta Wagle moved to postpone the acceptance of the Treasurerrsquos Report printed in the bulletin until the next meeting seconded by Holly Proctor and motion carried

President Steve Ridgway informed the membership that Treasurer Liz Thomas submitted her resignation to the Board which the Board regretfully accepted Per the TRMS Bylaws the Board voted to appoint Jerry Nagel to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the year The Board recommends to the membership the approval for $53088 for Genie machine parts for the TRMS Shop Eric Hamshar moved the approval and Leon Reeder seconded motion carried Julia Allande introduced eleven Pebble Pups who told the membership that their discussion tonight was on ldquoRock Cyclesrdquo Each Pebble Pup was given a Greentree Agate (Jasper) Shop Foreman Billy McBay noted the dates in the newsletter that the shop will be open He also expressed appre-ciation to Bob Hicks for his assistance in getting the Genie parts at a significant savings to the club Director Richard Jaeger presented the 2019 Rockhound of the Year award to Scott Robb and the 2019 Jr Rockhound of the Year to Adam Proctor Both were very appreciative Eric Hamshar reported that the first meeting of the Education Committee met tonight at 615 pm and will continue to meet at that time prior to each meeting All are invited He reminded members that the Show Committee will begin meeting next Monday at 7 pm at the church After some discussion Lori Cannella moved that the Spring SwapAuction be held on Saturday March 21 from 10 am ndash 3 pm at the Correll Museum Delores Wall seconded and motion carried There will be a potluck lunch January Field Trip Holly Proctor announced those interested will meet at 9 am at Redbud Valley in Catoosa on Sat-urday January 25 Julia announced that the display in the meeting room this month was done by Pebble Pup Evelynn Cannella with her first rock collection and fluorescent rocks Donna Loffer announced that members with last names beginning with A-E bring a snack for the February social hour Richard Jaeger announce the he brought an old scrapbook of the club for members to see on the display table

The Conglomerate News from the Chat Pile

Scott Whitaker went into the hospital January 6th for an appendectomy He had a 3 frac12 hour surgery on the 7th to re-move his appendix He went to his parents house when he was released from the hospital to recuperate His parents Don amp Rose Ann Whitaker are former TRMS members

Bennie Thomas had hip replacement done January 28th He was released from the hospital on January 29th and is back home recovering Liz says hersquos doing great

David Hogate is having his left shoulder replaced in early February David has been Billy McBayrsquos ldquo right hand manrdquo at the workshop for many years Hopefully another member will step in and help Billy until David recovers

Mouser really likes the kind of winter weather we had January 11th freezing rain and snow in the morning and sun-shine and everything thawed out in the afternoon

I attended the Tulsa Geological Society meeting recently in which Molly Simpson Turko spoke on the Structure of the Wichita Mountains and Anadarko Basin Molly was our TRMS Scholarship winner from the University of Tulsa about 11 or 12 years ago she now has her PhD in geology and works for Chesapeake Energy in Oklahoma City Molly presented a program to our club on the Geology of Turkey this is where she did her geology field camp for Tulsa Univ She got started in geology at Tulsa Community College where her professor was our long time member Claude Bolze Claude now runs the Elsing Museum At the Univ of Tulsa her lead professor was Dr Bryan Tapp Bryan has presented pro-grams to our club and was the recipient for the RMFMS Honorary Scholarship Awardee for which our club nominated him I really enjoyed getting to visit with Molly and her mom Dr Tapp and his wife and with Claude at the meeting Its gratifying to see how our Scholarship Award members have continued on with geology and know that we were able to help them - Richard Jaeger

15 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 2005 President Virgil Richards called the meeting to order Forty -three members and guests were present Door prizes were given out Wayne Mouser Program Chairman introduced Steve Herr professor at ORU who gave a presentation on the Geology of Saudi Arabia The field trip was the rock swap and pot luck lunch at the Hicks Rock Ranch

25 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 1995 President Wayne Mouser called the meeting to order Thirty-Seven members and 10 guests were present The judges amp exhibitors seminar was held at OSU in Stillwater Richard Jaeger amp Doc Whitteberry were judges at the Science Fair The Bill VanAtten Memorial Swap was held at Rockwood Village Trailer Park The pro-gram was a video titled ldquoMineral Exploration in Alaskardquo Bill Proctor wrote ldquoAn In Memoryrdquo on Harold Carloss who died 12-23-94 Linda Jaeger wrote ldquoAn In Memoryrdquo on Wallace Fort who died 12-25-94 Leon Reeder wrote an article titled ldquoPolishing The Hard Stonesrdquo Jack Hill wrote an article titled ldquoTumbling Tipsrdquo

45 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 1975 President Richard Jaeger called the meeting to order 160 members and guests were present Door prizes were given out Tumbled stones were given to the youngsters present Ruby Collins gave a brief talk on the Mineral amp Fossil display at the Gilcrease Museum The Show amp Tell table displayed jewelry amp polished stones made by members Jim Slack displayed a wide variety of agate wood and minerals he collected on the Aqua Frio Mark Kent amp Melba Hart displayed rare fossils in the Library case Homer Jones Program Chairman introduced James amp Lucille Slack who gave a slide presentation of their agate hunting trip to the Aqua Frio The field trip was to dig rose rocks Linda Moore amp Mary Prather wrote an article titled ldquoFossil Factsrdquo

Dear Rebecca

We found the following letter when we cleaned out Momrsquos (Madge Casteel) papers after her death As you can see this came from Mr Lee C Erhard Special Representative formerly of the Fourth National Bank at 4th Street and Boulder Street in downtown Tulsa In 1966 a new Fourth National Bank was built at 6th Street and Boulder As you can see Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society held rock and mineral shows in the bank for many years

My Mom Madge Casteel was the first Secretary and Editor in 19571958 The Casteel family was one of the first families to join when the Society was started

Also Barbara and I missed the November meeting where veterans were photographed For the record we are both US Army vet-erans She served in the Womenrsquos Army Corp and US Army Reserves I am a Vietnam Veteran

PEBBLE PUPS

We are getting quite adept at floor-crawling I must say We were eleven youngsters and a handful of adults

creating rock cycle charts at our January meeting After studying each of the rock types in detail we dia-

gramed how rocks change from one rock type to another demonstrating the ongoing and ever-present rela-

tionship between rock types We learned essentially that there really is nothing new This exercise finishes

our current study of igneous metamorphic and sedimentary rocks

For February we will study a particular rock hematite Each Pup is encouraged to find out as much infor-

mation as possible about the stuff we call ldquohematiterdquo and we will share this knowledge when we meet next

Many many thank yous to Holly Proctor for supplying colored markers and a glue gun for our activity last

meeting All parents and other adults are welcome to join us Anyone with ideas to share suggestions and

questions is encouraged to come on in be part of this learning activity We had another newcomer at this

latest meeting we hope Nathan Rogers will come back and be part of our group

RMFMS clubs observe the AFMS Code of Ethics

will respect both private and public property and will do no collecting on privately-owned land without the ownerrsquos

permission will keep informed on all laws regulations and rules governing collecting on public lands and observe them

will to the best of my ability ascertain the boundary lines of property on which plan to collect will use no firearms or blasting material in collecting areas will cause no willful damage to property of any kind - fences signs or buildings will leave all gates as found

will build fires in designated or safe places only and will be certain they are completely extinguished before leaving the area will discard burning material - matches cigarettes etc will fill all excavation holes which may be dangerous to livestock

will not contaminate wells creeks or other water supply will cause no willful damage to collecting material and will take home only what can reasonably use will practice conservation and undertake to utilize fully and well the materials have collected and will recycle my surplus for the pleasure and benefit of others

will support the Rockhound project HELP (Help Eliminate Litter Please) and leave all collecting areas devoid of litter re-gardless of how found will cooperate with field trip leaders and those in designated authority in all collecting areas

will report to my club or Federation officers Bureau of Land management or other authorities any deposit of petrified wood or other materials on public lands which should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations for public educational and scientific purposes will appreciate and protect our heritage of natural resources will observe the ldquoGolden Rulerdquo use ldquoGood Outdoor Mannersrdquo and at all times conduct myself in a manner which will add to the stat-ure and public image of rockhounds everywhere

Adherence to the AFMS Code of Ethics assures compliance with most statutes and regulations governing collecting on public lands and encourages respect for private property rights and the environment Clubs are urged to read the AFMS Code of Ethics in at least one meeting every year to publish the Code frequently in the club newsletter and to compel compliance on club field trips

issues of proposed legislation and enforcement affecting field collecting of minerals and fossils

organization with responsibility for advancing the interests of earth science amateurs with legislatures and land use management agencies

The AFMS will receive a report from ALAA at its annual meeting

The AFMS endorses the principle of multiple uses of public lands as a guarantee of continuing recreational opportunities

Wilderness and monument designations are inconsistent with the principle of multiple uses In view of the vast amount of public land al-ready designated as wilderness and monuments future such designations should be minimal taking into account the increased demand for recreational opportunities including rockhounding created by a growing population

In furtherance of the principle of multiple use the AFMS believes that laws regulations and rules established by relevant govern-mental authorities should be designed to allow freest possible access to all public lands coupled with minimal restrictions on the recrea-tional collection of minerals fossils gemstone materials and other naturally occurring materials

A right to collect minerals and fossils on public lands should be protected by statute

The AFMS urges its members to work with any or all government authorities to achieve a good working relationship in order to improve the

The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society Inc was organized in April 1958 to promote interest and provide education in the earth sci-ences in historical artifacts in jewelry-making and all forms of the lapidary arts Field trips the club workshop monthly meetings and other activities provide opportunities for life-long learning Meetings The second Monday of each month at the College Hill Presbyterian Church 7th and Columbia Street Tulsa OK Refreshments and coffee begin at 6 pm Pebble Pups meet at 615 and the membership business meeting and program commence at 7pm ALL WELCOME
