    1.0 TRAFFIC SUMMARY

    During the month of January 2012, all operational airports (taken together)handled 133.60 thousand aircraft movements (excluding General AviationMovements), 14.35 million passengers and 175.99 thousand tonnes of freight.

    The details are given in Table 1.1.

    The above table reveals that the aircraft movements and passenger traffic haveincreased by 10.4 per cent and 10.8 per cent respectively whereas freighttraffic has shown a decrease of 8.0 per cent during January 2012 over traffichandled during January 2011.

    2.0 AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

    2.1 TRAFFIC TREND: J ANUARY 2012VIS-A-VIS J ANUARY 2011

    2.1.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

    The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in January2012 has shown an increase of 10.4 per cent as compared to the aircraftmovement handled in January 2011 (refer to Annexure-I). Growth rates of

    2.1.2 INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

    The international aircraft movements have marginally increased by 0.8 per centduring the period under review. Growth rates of traffic handled by differentcategories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details aregiven in Annexure-IIA.

    Major increases (in per cent) are at (Annexure-IIA):

    The higher growth in traffic at above airports may be attributed to increase infrequency by existing airlines / start of operation by new airlines.

    2.1.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

    The domestic aircraft movements have increased by 13.0 per cent duringJanuary 2012 compared to aircraft movements handled in January 2011.

    2.2 TRAFFIC TREND: APRJ AN 2011-12 VIS-A-VIS

    2.2.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: -

    The total aircraft movements have witnessed an increase of 11.8 per cent i.e.,from 1155.60 thousand movements to 1292.28 thousand movements during theperiod April - January 2011-12 as compared to the aircraft movements handledduring April January 2010-11. Growth rates of traffic handled by differentcategories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details aregiven in Annexure-IIC.

    2.2.2. INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

    The international aircraft movements have shown an increase of 3.6 per centduring AprilJanuary 2011-12. Growth rates of traffic handled by differentcategories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details aregiven in Annexure IIA.

    4.1.1 TOTAL FREIGHT TRAFFIC: -

    The total freight traffic (International and Domestic) handled during thereporting month has registered a decline of 8.0 percent as compared to January2011.     The share of private airlines in aircraft movements, passenger and freight trafficon the domestic sector is maintained at 82.6%, 83.9% and 86.0% respectivelyduring January 2012. The share of domestic passenger traffic is showngraphically in chart 5.1. The overall share of passengers in Low Cost Airlines isincreased to 46.3% in January 2012 as against 41.1% in January 2011. Thedetailed airport-wise share of Air India Limited and Private Airlines indomestic traffic is given in the table 5.1

    The dispersion of air traffic in terms of percentage handled at differentcategories of airports in the country is shown in the Table - 6.1. The dispersion

    of traffic is also depicted in the Chart 6.1 for the month of January 2012. TheTable 6.1 shows that seventeen international airports have major share in thecountrys air traffic i.e. 79.2 per cent, 84.7 per cent and 96.4 per cent in aircraftmovements, passenger and freight traffic respectively.

    7.0 REGIONWISE TREND AND SHARE IN TOTAL

    TRAFFIC:7.1 REGION WISE TREND:

    Northern Region has registered the highest growth rate of 11.6% closelyfollowed by Southern Region with 11.3% and Western Region with 10.7% intotal aircraft movements during the reporting month January 2012 compared tothe traffic handled during January 2011.

    All the regions have registered significant growth ranging from 8 to 16 per centin total passenger traffic during January 2012. Northern Region has registeredthe highest growth rate of 16.3 % followed by North Eastern Region with

    12.7% and Eastern Region with 12.1% in the total passenger traffic duringJanuary 2012 compared to January 2011.

    All the Region have registered negative growth ranging from 5 to 18 per centin total freight traffic during the reporting month January 2012 compared to thetraffic handled during January 2011 resulting into an overall decrease of 8.0 %.

    Category wise & Region wise trends in traffic during January 2012 and for theperiod April January 2011-12 vis--vis April January 2010-11 may bevisualized in the Annexure V.

    7.2REGION WISE SHARE:

    Southern Region has witnessed the highest percentage share of 32.5 % in totalAircraft Movements followed by Western Region with 28.2 % and NorthernRegion with 25.2 % during January 2012.

    Southern and Western Regions have witnessed the highest equal percentageshare of 30.3 % in total passenger traffic followed by Northern Region with27.1 % during January 2012.

    Southern Region has also witnessed the highest percentage share of 33.9 % intotal freight traffic closely followed by Western Region with 32.6 % andNorthern Region with 26.7 % during January 2012.

    8.0 WORLD TRAFFIC SCENARIO DURING J ANUARY2012:

    The passenger and freight traffic flash reported by ACI for January 2012,

    which reveal World Passenger Traffic posted positive growth rate except AfricaRegion. Middle East Region has witnessed the highest growth rate of 11 percent followed by Asia Pacific Region with 9.2 per cent in total passengertraffic. Freight growth figures are less impressive because of persistenteconomic uncertainty, Africa Region has increased by 5.4 per cent followed byMiddle East Region with 4.4 per cent in the total freight traffic.

    8.1 PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

    In January 2012, total passenger traffic demand rose by 4.8 per cent comparedto the same period in 2011. International passenger traffic was increased by 5.3

    per cent and domestic passenger traffic was up by 4.7 per cent during January2012. Middle East Region has registered the highest passenger traffic growthrate of 11.6 per cent in international category whereas Asia Pacific Region hasregistered the highest passenger traffic growth rate of 8.9 per cent in domesticcategory during January 2012 compared to January 2011.

    Global passenger traffic increased by 4.8 per cent during the year endingJanuary 2012 compared to the year ending January 2011 with internationalpassenger traffic grew by 6.1 per cent and domestic passenger traffic increasedby 3.6 per cent.

    8.2 FREIGHT TRAFFIC:Total freight handled worldwide in January 2012 has registered a decline of 7.5per cent compared to January 2011 with international freight down by 8.1 percent and domestic freight decreased by 5.7 per cent. Africa Region haswitnessed the highest growth of 7.3 per cent in International category.Negative growth rate has witnessed in all the regions in domestic categoryduring January 2012 compared to January 2011.

    Total freight handled worldwide during the year ending January 2012 havewitnessed decrease of 1.8 percent compared to the year ending January 2011

    with international freight also down by 1.8 per cent and domestic freightdecreased by 1.4 per cent.
