step #2: communicating your skills with “STAR”
statements
Situation
• During my internship at Nestlé this past summer, I was on the innovation and brand management team in Confectionery
Task
• I was tasked to plan the annual“Development Day”, an event where the team partakes in activities to learn more about the category with a limited budget
Action
•I conceptualized a theme revolving around understanding the future of food, snacking, and flavours
•Then, I planned and executed an ‘Amazing Race’ style game where managers and decision makers got to experience food concepts and shopper techniques up close and personal
Result
• After the event, I was recognized by the President of Confectionery and the CEO of Nestlé for leadershp and vision with an award and set the team up for the new innovation season
Link
• Even in smaller roles, I take the initiative to look at the big picture and bring a long term focus to every task. Additionally, I am able to put these big ideas into paper and execute them tangibly

what is a failure story?
A failure story is an example of a time
when something went wrong and the
lessons you learned and steps you took
to correct the issue.
These types of questions are very
likely to come up in interviews – and
ones that you definitely need to prepare
ahead of time for!

how to create a failure story
Situation
• I was competing on the Marketingteam for Sauder JDC West 2017
• Sauder had just won School of the Year and we wanted to win again
Misstep
• Winningwas a point of pride for me and I put all my energy into “brute forcing” a win
• I neglected the needs of my team mates
Failure
• We ended up placing 4th, literally just a brush away from a podium placement and it was devastating
Lesson
• I need to make my work ethic and skills the source of my pride, rather than my arbitrary ability to win case competitions
Action Steps
• I focused on becoming emotionally intelligent and self aware

Take out your notebook/piece of paper and
answer these following questions…
1. What is a career path that you have always wanted to pursue, but feel
intimidated or discouraged from actually pursuing it?
In other words – if money wasn’t an issue, what would you be doing?
2. What does success mean to you?
3. I want you to visualize a typical work day that is 5 years from now.
Describe your surroundings, who you’re talking to, and what kind of state
are you in? Do not write your job title or the company name.
