W hile waiting at a traffic light recently near a major freeway, in Scottsdale, AZ, USA I glanced over

at the unique cactus design etched into the concrete on the side of the expressway. Although this particular stretch of the highway with its desert designs has been around for years, it really came alive to me that afternoon. I suddenly noticed all of the prickly pear, or Nopal cacti, that were growing right up against the busy freeway. What I barely observed for years suddenly stood out. I reflected a moment on what an incredible plan God has for everything. Here’s this spiky desert plant growing all around us that produces the amazing fruit that Nopalea is made from. All the stories that we hear daily about how Nopalea has changed lives flashed across my mind.

If you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have already taken the Nopalea Wellness Challenge, you can attest to the wonder of this delicious-tasting wellness drink. A story recently came in from a woman who had been desperately seeking relief for serious pain. One day on a trip to the shopping mall, she overheard a conversation between two women talking about how the cactus juice helps the body restore itself to wellness. Her interest was piqued and upon her return home, she frantically searched the Internet, which led her to TriVita® and Nopalea.

Flash forward: the woman is now able to resume her exercise program and morning walks which were always so important to her. I was very touched by her words, “I wasn’t quite sure why I went to the mall that day, perhaps a higher force led me there. What I am sure of, however, is that guardian angels do exist, and they come in many forms. In my case, she is a beautiful, prickly, fuchsia little cactus sphere called Nopalea!”

That is only one example of the countless stories that pour in. If you’ve been somewhat sceptical, take the opportunity to get started on the Nopalea Wellness Challenge by ordering a 4-Pack at special online pricing of $119.99 (see page 7).

Throughout the VitaJournal, you’ll find informational articles on a variety of health and wellness topics. Once you’ve read it, forward the link to this VitaJournal to someone you care about! It’s extremely rewarding to work with a company that changes quality of life for countless people on a daily basis!

PURSUING WELLNESS

I am thrilled to announce that the TriVita Wellness Center is now

open! This has been a goal of ours for years and now it has manifested itself in a far more significant and beautiful way than we ever imagined. Learn more on pages 10-11.

Yes, goals and dreams do come to pass when

we refuse to let them die and hold on to them. In order to do that, we must keep a positive attitude. In the connected world we live in, we are bombarded every day by negative news and information that can affect our attitude if we allow it to. We need to rise above the negativity around us.

In his book Attitude is Everything, Jeff Keller writes, “We must think of attitude as the mental filter through which you experience the world. It is really your window through which you see the world. When you were a child the window seemed pretty clean. But as you know there comes a time when life starts throwing dirt on the window. Our windows get dirty by criticism from parents and teachers, smudged by ridicule from peers, smeared by rejection, soiled by disappointments and clouded by doubt.”

“The problem is dirt keeps building up and all too many people do nothing about it. They continue to go through life with a dirty window from which they view their world. They lose enthusiasm, get frustrated easily, and depressed. And most tragically, they give up on their dreams and resolutions all because they failed to clean their attitude window.”

You can’t control the dirt and mud that is thrown on the window, but you can choose to take out the squeegee and clean the window! I promise you, life will appear brighter and sunnier: you will be happier and healthier; you will accomplish more; your resolutions and dreams will come alive and stay alive. But only you can choose to wipe the window clean. Adjusting our attitudes through the wellness essentials of love, forgiveness, gratitude, and acceptance is one of the greatest ways I know to consistently wipe the window of attitude clean.

Dr. Viktor Frankl, who survived the horrors and atrocities of the Holocaust, wrote these words: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Remember, only you can wipe your attitude window clean each day. Please know having a more positive attitude is achievable and with it a healthier and happier life!

The amazing anti-inflammatory power of BioflavonoidsNopalea™ offers an abundance of these inflammation-busting nutrientsBy Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer

A relatively new discovery has merged ingredients in nature in a way that science did not

know was possible. These nutrients are protein-bound Bioflavonoids. They were originally thought to be just a pigment, an inert color that made a plant pretty, but imparted no real health benefit.

As time progressed, science discovered that the protein structure of Bioflavonoids is not only beneficial – it is vital for life! Soon, the anti-inflammatory value of Bioflavonoids opened the door of discovery: Bioflavonoids exist in a wide variety (there are 1,100 Bioflavonoids), and each one completes a specific need in human health by supplying structure and function to every human cell.

Important functions of BioflavonoidsA cell distressed by external toxins and internal deficiencies will eventually wither, collapse and die. If more cells die than can be replaced, we slip into a kind of “deficit spending” and our lean body mass withers. This is called sarcopenia. Bioflavonoids can be used to shore up or strengthen the cell wall. This leads to rehydration of the cell and repair of sarcopenia.

A cell in the human body is very much like a water balloon: tremendous internal pressure held in place by a thin membrane. Your body maintains this pressure by keeping a perfect balance of minerals inside and outside the cell wall. If this balance of minerals shifts, the membrane becomes unstable and the “water” pours out; the cell dies.

The mineral balancing effects of Bioflavonoids relentlessly work to maintain a 2:1 ratio of minerals: potassium inside the cell, sodium outside the cell; magnesium inside the cell, calcium outside the cell and so on. This maintains the integrity of the cell wall and keeps the cell from “popping” – dying prematurely.

Speaking of “popping” a cell, nothing pops a cell like a toxin! We are exposed to toxins from the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. We are also exposed to toxins from within our own body.

Bioflavonoids support the structure and function of the cell as mentioned before. They also work to neutralise toxins by supporting your natural detoxification processes as well as draining away accumulations of toxic waste.

If toxins accumulate or trauma injures a cell, if stress creates tension or if nutrient deficiency weakens a cell, then chronic inflammation is certain to appear. Chronic inflammation is at the heart of the most feared diseases we face. Bioflavonoids serve as anti-inflammatory nutrients to help reduce inflammation. Regardless of where inflammation begins or what process it affects, Bioflavonoids help reduce the activity of the enzymes known to cause all inflammation.

Concentrated BioflavonoidsAs mentioned before, science has discovered 1,100 Bioflavonoids, each with a different structure and different function. The Nopal cactus of the Sonoran Desert contains the highest concentration of protein-bound Bioflavonoids. This is because the Sonoran Desert is the most extreme desert in the world and the Nopal plant needs all 1,100 Bioflavonoids to survive in this intense environment.

How about you? Is your environment so intense that you are threatened by chronic inflammation? Are you exposed to toxins from outside and inside your body? Perhaps the emerging science of Bioflavonoids – the anti-inflammatory complex from the Sonoran Desert – can help you live a happier life!

T he huge international success of Nopalea brings questions about the anti-

inflammatory wellness drink into TriVita every day. Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, answers some of the queries that come up most often.

Q: How soon can I expect results after drinking Nopalea?

A: Some people report feelings of relief quickly

when they start taking the Nopalea ingredients. Most people take longer to feel the results. Nopalea helps break the cycle of inflammation. How long it takes to work depends on how much inflammation you have and how long you have had it. Start by taking 90 to 180 ml each day for 60 days. For maintenance, drink 30 to 90 ml daily, depending on your body’s inflammation-fighting needs.

Q: What’s the difference between the fruit in the Nopal cactus and other superfruits?

A: The big difference is a unique concentration of

anti-inflammatory nutrients called Bioflavonoids in the Nopal cactus superfruit. The Nopal cactus superfruit is the only one that acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Q: Is it best to take the full serving once a day, or split it up throughout the day?

A: Our suggestion is to take Nopalea twice daily for

60 days. After that, simply listen to your body as to how frequently you need to take it.

Q: Is it okay to mix Nopalea with other beverages, such as orange juice or club soda?

A: Yes, it will not dilute the effect at all.

Q: Should I take Nopalea with or without food?

A: Either way is fine. Nopalea is a food and will digest like

any other food.

Q: Is Nopalea Certified Organic?

A: Nopalea is Organic; however, since the

ingredients are “wildcrafted” by the Sonora natives (defined as “collected in the wild without cultivation”), it cannot be legally “certified” as organic.

Q: Is Nopalea gluten-free?

A: Although Nopalea contains no gluten, it is not certified

to be gluten-free. A product that is certified gluten-free must be produced in a facility where there is no chance of cross-contamination with other ingredients containing gluten. Several ingredients in Nopalea are processed in facilities that do not have this certification.

Q: Can I cook with Nopalea?

A: We don’t suggest it. Many of Nopalea’s beneficial

properties will be lost to high heat.

A nnette O. was on a never-ending cycle of pain and discomfort with no solution in

sight. It affected every aspect of life for this Nuriootpa, SA, AUS resident.

Annette’s condition had gradually deteriorated over several years and nothing seemed to be helping. Her laundry list of maladies included chronic skin disease, a nagging back problem and chronically stiff, swollen and painful joints in her hands.

“I was no longer able to knit garments for my grandchildren,” Annette recalls. “Moving around became much more difficult. Parts of my skin looked like raw steak. It burned and itched so badly that I was bursting into tears with frustration.”

Annette’s husband, Bill, felt equally powerless to assist in any way. It had become a serious situation with no end in sight. He says, “Our relationship became so tense that I would rather be out of her way, even though she desperately needed my support and care. This was not good for the health of our marriage.”

A fruitful online searchOut of desperation, Bill started searching the Internet. He saw a number of websites with outlandish claims that only increased his skepticism. “Then one night I came across the TriVita website and I started reading

up about Nopalea,” says Bill. “We both decided to give the product a try. After all, what could we lose?”

Once their Nopalea arrived, Annette immediately began the Loading Phase. She was pleasantly surprised when she started feeling a little bit better in a short period of time. The long-term results were even more impressive.

Triumphant reliefHere’s the latest report. After months of using Nopalea, Annette’s skin has cleared up and her hands feel much better. She even started knitting again.

Annette also feels that her immune system is stronger and her energy levels have improved.

“We are so grateful for Nopalea,” says the very happy couple. “We offer our sincere thanks to the people behind the product, and for TriVita’s support and caring attention. We have not hesitated to recommend Nopalea to anyone who has seen the difference it has made in our lives.”

We were espe-cially pleased to welcome 4-time Grammy Award-winner Olivia Newton-John as a very special

guest at our ribbon-cutting event. Olivia has taken a keen interest in wellness because of her own health crisis. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 on the same weekend that her father passed away from liver cancer. Olivia has been cancer-free for more than a decade.

Olivia Newton-John is also a celebrated humanitarian, and her own bout with cancer led Olivia to become a tireless advocate for health and wellness. She is helping many others going through similar health journeys with the Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Centre in Melbourne.

connectionThe food-mood

Eat for how you want to feel

T he saying, “You are what you eat” is true. Food is our most intimate relationship, and it affects all of our other

relationships, too.

Food contains not only nutrients, but energy as well. If we understand this concept then we can use that energy to ground, calm and balance us or to expand and lift us up. If we under-stand how food affects us beyond the physiological, we can use it as one of our greatest tools to stay balanced in today’s fast-paced, sometimes chaotic world.

My first introduction to this idea that foods contain energy, and that it is possible to eat according to how you want to feel, was the dietary theory of Macrobiotics presented in The Self-Healing Cookbook by Kristina Turner. A Macrobiotic diet involves eating grains as a staple food, supplemented with other foodstuffs like local, seasonal vegetables and sea vegetables, and avoiding the use of highly processed/refined foods and most animal products. Macrobiotics also addresses the way we eat, discouraging over-eating and requiring that food be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. This dietary theory helped me become conscious about what I was putting in my body, how I was eating and how foods were affecting me. It was the first time in my life I went a long time without animal meat and sugar.

While my diet has since evolved and changed, I will never forget what Macrobiotics has given me – the ability to have a strong connection to my food and a sense of empowerment that I can control how I feel based upon what I eat.

How do you feel? Do you have frequent aches and pains, tension, upset stom-ach, headaches, skin eruptions, mood swings and colds? The self-healing lifestyle of Macrobiotics starts with the recognition that minor symptoms don’t just happen to us. We have an active hand in creating them, by the choices we make in our daily lives. On the flip side of this, there is always something we can do to bring our bodies into a new state of balance by embracing three basic principles:

1: Eat in harmony with natureThis means to eat traditional, whole, unrefined foods that are locally grown and cooked appropriately for the season.

2: Balance natural forces in cookingHere, seek a healthful blend of food characteristics: warm and cool, wet and dry, hard and soft, salty and sweet, heavy and light.

3: Use food to create desired effectsIf you can use food to improve the health of your body, that will affect your moods, and in turn, your life.

Put “flu fighters” on your GROCERY LISTThese immunity boosters help prevent illness

Help protect yourself against the flu bug and colds with the following disease-fighting foods:

• Yogurt: A healthy digestive system fights disease, and friendly bacteria in yogurt helps keep the intestine free of disease-causing germs.

• Garlic: Fights infection and bacteria. Also has anti-inflammatory/anti-fungal properties and boosts immune functioning.

• Teas: This natural anti-viral and anti-bacterial remedy boosts the immune system by stopping bacteria growth that causes infection.

• Orange foods: Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cantaloupe, winter squash and oranges are rich in glutathione, an immune-system component that helps destroy flu viruses.

• Shiitake mushrooms: Contains a type of carbohydrate called beta-glucans that helps boost your body’s immune response.

• Water: Our body’s immune system needs water to function. Water also helps flush viruses and other toxins out of the body. No wonder “Drink Water” is one of TriVita’s 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness.

Avoid the following immunity busters:• Sugar: Damages the ability of white blood cells to evict

viruses and bacteria.

• Chemicals: Nitrates in hot dogs and bacon, food additives and artificial colours and flavours are all immune suppressors.

• Sodas, flavoured coffees, sports and energy drinks: Loaded with immunity-zapping sugars.

• Snacks: Polyunsaturated fats and trans fats in many chips, crackers and other popular snack foods weaken the immune system.

Food types for how you want to feelFoods that are expansive or uplifting are usually:

Light, porous Grow upwardsPerishableTender, juicyCool, wetSweet, sour or bitterSpicy or oilyRaw

These foods fuel mental, psychological or spiritual activity, relaxation and a feeling of looseness.

Some examples: leafy greens; nuts and seeds; potato and tomato; tropical fruits; butter and oil; honey and spices.

Foods that are grounding and help us focus have these qualities:

Dense, heavyUsually grow downwardsKeep well for a long timeGrow in cool climatesTough, fibrousAre cookedSalty, bland or meaty

Examples include: root vegetables; animal protein (fish, chicken, turkey and especially eggs and red meat); salt and cheese.

By checking in and seeing how you feel before a meal, and then deciding how you want to feel, you can pick and choose from these food groups to eat to fulfil your body’s natural urge for balance.

L ike much of the world, Australia and New Zealand are weighed down by the “globesity

epidemic,” as it’s called by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Contrary to the image of days gone by, when outdoor fun and fitness seemed to be the norm, Aussies and Kiwis are catching up to the world leaders in a dangerous race: who can have the most overweight and obese people?

The global map here created by WHO shows the light red “danger” zones of overweight and obesity by nation in 2010 (the latest year available). Clearly, Australia and New Zealand are in the same league as the U.S., Argentina, South Africa and others: between 65 and 80% of the people are either overweight or

obese, as measured by Body Mass Index (BMI). (This map reflects females ages 15 above; the numbers for males are slightly lower.)

BMI, as many know, is an index of weight to height used to classify adults. A BMI of 25 and over is overweight; 30 or over is obese. While extra weight may be associated with nations of higher incomes and advanced development, many low- and middle-income countries are struggling with the issue, too. This is blamed on the growing availability of cheap, processed foods high in fat, sugar and salt, coupled with a decrease in physical activity.

For comparison, here are the estimated figures for overweight and obesity combined for some of the “red” countries:

Australia 66.5%

New Zealand 74.2%

Egypt 76%

U.S. 76.7%

As WHO notes, when these numbers rise so do the risks of heart disease, diabetes, joint issues and some cancers.

A big problem, growing bigger: Obesity in the region

F or some of us, just the thought of menopause might increase our level of stress. Still we should think of it

as what it is: a natural part of life. So, we need to learn how to adapt to its challenges. The first step is to get well informed and prepared.

Menopause normally affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age falling around 51. It starts with a pre-stage (premenopause) when the production of hormones (especially estrogen) by the ovaries begins to slow down. As this change occurs, the hormone levels in a woman’s body will tend to fluctuate. As a result, women often experience a range of symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, aches and pains, irritability, tiredness and headaches.

If these symptoms sound familiar, you’re certainly not alone. About 30% of women report psychological symptoms related to menopause. Some women become irritable and snappy, while others experience tears and despair. These intense emotions are just part of the transitional period your body is going through; they are temporary and will eventually disappear.

If you’re approaching or in menopause and feel stressed by symptoms, be proud! The fact that you are aware of your symptoms is great. These symptoms are a wake-up call: they’re telling you to pay attention to your body and to your mind. These tactics may help you cope:

7 keys to handling stress1. Physical activity. It works magic against stress and could also help reduce other menopausal symptoms.

2. Sleep. Poor sleep raises the levels of stress and irritability. If you’ve tried and failed to sleep better, contact your healthcare provider.

3. A healthy diet. Too much stress over too long a period not only depletes your body of nutrients, but it also alters your body’s biochemistry, making you more likely to crave and overeat junk food and to store weight.

4. Planning. Planning gives you time to pace yourself, to take breaks and enjoy relaxing activities to help clear your mind.

5. Be realistic. Work within your limits and set realistic expectations for yourself and others. Practicing positive self-talk can also help you offset negative thoughts.

6. Laugh. Find humour in your life. Laughter is a great tension reducer.

7. Connect. Stay in touch with your family, friends and community.

Finally, be aware that stress and depression share many common symptoms. While the stress of menopause is usually temporary, depression is a disease that requires treatment. If you suspect your stress is something deeper, talk with your healthcare provider.

I magine that you live on a planet where everyone has one car during their entire life, with no chance to have another one.

How would you care for it, knowing that it should last your entire life? Certainly, we clean our cars and houses, their pipes and drains, to maintain them in good condition because we don’t want to lose them. But how often we forget about our own bodies, with their “pipes and drains,” taking for granted their normal functioning. No matter how often or well we cleanse our outsides, we need to pay attention to our insides, too.

Toxins and waste: “intrusions” in the bodyIn time, there is a gradual, silent accumulation of waste products and toxins inside the body. They come from our own metabolism, from our environment, from our food, from the air we breathe, and from drugs and medicines. The body reacts to these intrusions with a process of cleansing that involves the kidneys, intestines, skin and lungs.

The most important organ involved in cleansing? The liver, where chemicals like drugs, alcohol and unwanted harmful particles from the environ-ment undergo a process called “biotransformation” by the enzymes

in the liver. The foreign compounds will be burned, or adhered to sugars (similar to glucose) in order to be carried out easily.

“Toxicons”: disrupting hormonesToxins and waste can harm us in another way. They can interfere with our internal communication system through chemical messengers called hormones, produced by endocrine (thyroid, adrenal and other) glands.

These intrusive molecules, called environmental hormones or “toxicons,” can disrupt the normal functioning of endocrine glands and lead to cancers, fertility problems and autoimmune diseases. We call this phenomenon “endocrine disruption” – and modern medicine hasn’t yet found a remedy.

Who needs cleansingIndividual needs vary, of course, but even newborn infants can carry toxins. Studies have revealed that more than 20 unwanted chemicals have been identified from umbilical cord cells collected from newborn babies. This data shows that nobody is protected enough – even in the womb.

Start with healthy foodWhat we can do? Where should we start? The best first step is to make healthy dietary choices; this is a good long-term investment in our own health and it applies to everyone. I’m not talking about a diet to lose weight, but a diet for life, comprised of the elements you already know: fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and lots of water.

For many people, undergoing a detoxification, or cleansing program from time to time, is the answer to concerns about internal pollutants. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before undertaking a cleanse.

Feeling fresh, full of energyYou may see and feel the benefits of cleansing in several ways. When you get the essential nutrients you need through healthy eating and high-quality supplements, the body will crave fewer calories. So, you’ll have less fat being stored, and fewer places for toxins to “live” (fat tissue acts like a warehouse for pollutants).

After all, what’s better than waking up on a sunny morning feeling fresh and full of energy?

A re achy, stiff joints keeping you from exercising? The solution might be… exercise!

Especially for women, who tend to suffer more joint pain than men, activity that works the joints without over-working them can be just what the doctor ordered. (Of course, consult with your healthcare provider first.)

Did you know that for every .45 kilogram you are overweight, there is an extra 1.4 kilograms of stress on the knee joint? Plus, every extra kilogram adds 2.7 kilograms more stress to the hip joints. According to one study reported by Harvard Health Publications, women 55 and over with knee osteoarthritis could decrease their symptoms 33% by losing weight. Today, we know that exercising will make you stronger, ease joint pain and help you be more mobile. These three tactics can help you exercise your way to less joint pain:

3 ways to start reducing joint pain1. Walking. If you have pain, do 3 or 4

10-minute stints of walking each day (especially if you are doing nothing

right now). You can do more uninter-rupted time if you feel ready.

2. Swimming. It’s great for reducing stress to your joints and improving joint mobility.

3. Strength training with a flat exercise band is an effective way to make muscles stronger so they can support shoulders, elbows, hips, ankles and knees. Your flat band should be at least 1.8 meters long; you can purchase one online or at many department and sports stores.

3 easy exercises for better joint support1. Abduction for hips. Stand with both

feet on the flat band about 30.4-40.6 centimeters apart. Hold the ends of the band firmly in each hand, maintaining the resistance of the band. Stand up tall and begin lifting alternating straight legs to the side. Complete 10 repetitions 2 times. This will strengthen your hip and butt muscles to give more support to your hips.

2. Calf raises with bicep curls. Stand on the band with feet about 10-13 centimeters apart while holding the flat band firmly in each hand. Raise and lower heels as you bend your elbows and bring your hands up in front, using your bicep muscles. Do 10 repetitions 2 times. This will strengthen your ankles, arches, calves and arm muscles.

3. Squats with side bends. Open feet wide with toes pointing out diagonally. Bend your knees toward your toes. Hold the flat band overhead stretched between each hand. Slowly, side-bend right and left, 10 times for 2 sets. This will strengthen your big leg muscles (quadriceps) and your core abdominal muscles.

Consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.

Smoking, high blood pressure may speed ageing of the brain London, England

Smoking and high blood pressure may be associated with the accelerated decline of memory, learning, attention and reasoning in older adults, according to research published in Age and Ageing.

Researchers at Kings College London found that study participants who smoked, had high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risk factors, performed more poorly on tasks that tested memory, verbal fluency, attention, mental speed and visual scanning. They found that smoking had the most consistent negative impact across all tasks.

Fruits and veggies may cut heart attack risk Stockholm, Sweden

A daily diet that includes seven servings of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables may reduce a woman’s heart attack risk by 20-29% over 10 years, say scientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.

Published in the American Journal of Medicine, the study was a review of data on more than 32,500 women, aged 49 to 83, who were part of The Swedish Mammography Cohort. While previous studies have concentrated on single antioxidants, the researchers in this case wanted to determine the relationship between a wide range of dietary antioxidants and heart attack. They found that women with the highest antioxidant intake were 20-29% less likely to have a heart attack than those with the lowest intake (7 servings of fruits and vegetables per day versus 2.4 servings).

Grapefruit-medication interactions on the riseLondon, Ontario, Canada

The list of medications that can cause adverse reactions when combined with grapefruit is increasing, said Lawson Health Research Institute researchers. Adverse effects may include kidney failure, respiratory failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, to name a few.

“Many of the drugs that interact with grapefruit are highly prescribed and are essential for the treatment of important or common medical conditions,” wrote lead author Dr. David Bailey. “Recently, however, a disturbing trend has been seen. Between 2008 and 2012, the number of medications with the potential to interact with grapefruit and cause serious adverse effects… has increased from 17 to 43.”

Some of the medications that carry an interaction risk include certain cholesterol and blood pressure-lowering drugs and opioid pain relievers. As little as one grapefruit or eight ounces of juice can cause a reaction.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

A s we move through the first few months of a new year, it’s a good idea to reflect on your goals and track your

progress. It’s also good to assess your “mental chatter” to make sure your internal dialogue is lining up with your positive intentions.

We talk to ourselves all day long and, unfortunately, this self-talk is frequently negative. This negativity can destroy any seed of hope we may have for accomplishing our dreams and goals.

When times are going well it is easy to think and speak positively. But life is filled with happy times and times that are challenging. Practicing positive self-talk no matter what the circumstances can help set in motion actions that will bring us the outcomes that we want.

The words of your mouth are a creative force. When you were created, you were given ONE THING to co-create your world with. WORDS. Use them wisely.

Your words are predestining your future with every word you speak. They are the architects and construction crew of your life. So use them carefully to construct the life you REALLY want to live.

Pre-thinking has brought you hereFor better or for worse, pre-thinking has brought you to this place in life. The words spoken in the past have created your present. If you are happy with the results that you have obtained, then you have used the proper building blocks of thoughts and words to get you to this place.

However, some of you are not happy with the results. You have been “hung by your tongue” by releasing negative words out of your mouth, setting in motion a negative outcome.

Replacing self-talk from negative to positive is not going to happen overnight. However, if you find yourself often struggling, unable to achieve your goals and you know you have negative mental chatter going on, then you should commit to the process of change.

Here is a secret tool that I use when a negative thought persists: I hit the mental delete button and say, “delete” a couple of times. Then I envision the thought disappearing into thin air. If you are determined to be a positive talker, this method of conditioning will work.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Visualise reaching your goals by year’s end and be relentless with your words to create the dream life you really want to be living.

“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” ~ John 14:27

I t is very rare these days to find an individual who claims to have little or no stress in their lives. Instead, most of us face the

rigorous demands of each day propelled head-on into the fast lane. Even though some stress is a normal part of our lives, we should take precautions to deal with it effectively.

So what are we supposed to do if our lives begin to spiral out of control and we’re left desperately trying to contend with difficulties? What measures can we take to halt the stress and worry that threaten to sideline us? Our help comes through the promise that is found in the Bible; the promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us, ever!

Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

What a tremendous promise! We can trust that the LORD will be with us no matter what may be occurring in our lives. We can trust that He will never abandon us, that He will give us just what we need when we need it. How beautiful is this blessed assurance

that we can rely on forever. God is the one constant force in the universe that we can count on when everyone and everything else fails us. He never tires, or complains that we are asking too much from Him. There are no limits on how often He provides strength, comfort and renewed encouragement. It is His joy to bless us with His power and immeasurable love, mercy and grace.

When we stay connected to the source from which all blessings flow, we are able to abide in our Father’s peace. Remember this truth: when we stand on the firm foundation of God’s Word, we are living out our faith.

When stress and worry invade our hearts and minds, we can pray to God, asking Him to fill our entire being with His peace. We can also take time to read the Bible, gleaning life-giving strength that will help cast out our fears.

It is my prayer that you will claim this truth as a vital principle in your life. Trust Him, believe in His Word, rest in Him and place all of your cares and worries in His more than capable hands.

“I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.” ~ Psalm 4:8

Michael Radulescu, M.D., is in private practice in New South Wales, AUS, after working in emergency medicine for several years. His specialty areas are cardiology, diabetes and neurology.

C hronic stress and symptoms of depression contribute to sickness and death from heart disease, though

we’re not sure why. What we do know, however, is that our response to chronic stress leads to chronic inflammation that can literally clog us to death.

You’ve probably heard of the “fight/flight” stress response: the heart races, blood pressure rises and breathing becomes fast and shallow. These automatic, split-second responses deliver extra oxygen and nutrients to body parts that need them most, so that we can either flee from the source of danger or fight for our lives.

Angry lion, annoying boss: the same to our brainOnce the danger is gone, our blood pressure, heart rate and everything else gradually return back to normal. Here’s the problem: Our brain can’t tell the difference between stress caused by an angry lion and stress caused by an annoying boss. The lion stress is acute (short-term); the boss stress can be chronic, stretching on for months or years. The body’s response to both is the same.

Research indicates that exposure to chronic stress generally increases vulnerability to coronary heart disease.

Chronic stressors lead to chronic inflammationThere is compelling scientific evidence to show that chronic stressors activate

the immune system in a way that leads to persistent, or chronic, inflammation.

With long-term exposure to inflam-mation, people develop symptoms of depression and experience progressive atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), the root of heart disease. It’s also been shown that repeated episodes of acute mental stress may ultimately lead to atherosclerosis.

Stress, by activating the release of various stress hormones, damages the lining of blood vessels. Add in the accumulation of other fatty nutrients, such as cholesterol, and we get plaques (semi-hard accumulations) around the blood vessels. When enough plaques accumulate, blood flow will be greatly reduced. This can trigger heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions.

What we can do to copeWhile we can’t banish daily stress, we can respond to it in better, healthier ways:

• Try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises or meditation.

• Learn how to express our thoughts and feelings.

• Stay in close contact with friends and family.

• Cultivate a positive attitude.• Stick to a healthy diet.• Exercise daily.• Eliminate smoking and

alcohol excess.

WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT

A failed neck fusion operation created 14 years of agony for Gayla C. Before

the surgery, this Mt. Pleasant, TX, USA resident was a healthy and active person who loved playing softball and volleyball. “The after-surgery pain never really went away,” Gayla recalls. “I spent the next 14 years doctor-hopping in an attempt to get my health back.”

Gayla fell into a deep “after-surgery” depression and lost hope that she’d ever be well again. Her entire body ached with unbearable, stabbing pain. “I could barely keep track of what day of the week it was,” she says, “whether it was night or day, and I slept on and off around the clock. Pain controlled my life and fatigue kept me from being able to do simple things like brush my hair, bathe and dress myself. I barely existed in a vegetative state.”

Mystery resolvedFinally, 10 years into her ordeal, Gayla was diagnosed with a tick-borne illness that had wreaked havoc on her immune system and mimicked many other illnesses. Gayla’s case was so severe that she was actually interviewed for a Japanese television documentary.

Answered prayersIn February 2012, Gayla started taking Nopalea. “Within a week my energy increased. By week two, my body was detoxing and then week by week amazing things started happening.” She reports:

• A decrease in chronically stiff, swollen and painful joints

• Improved mobility throughout her body• Reduced pain, minimised need for

prescription medication• Increased energy level, decreased fatigue

“I am jubilant about what God, Nopalea and Michael Ellison have done for me and my family,” says an

ecstatic Gayla. “I can only thank them for the health I have gained and pray that Nopalea continues to help repair my afflicted body that has suffered for way too many years. I don’t take my new life for granted for one minute; I thank God several times a day for his blessings and Nopalea. I am going places, doing things I haven’t done in many years and making big plans for my future.”

Gayla also reminds people who are taking the Nopalea Wellness Challenge to be patient and consistent. “I explain to them that they didn’t get sick overnight, and they won’t receive complete relief overnight,” she emphasises. “If you have a chronic illness like me, it will take time for your body to repair itself. I have one avenue for wellness and I know the plan – Nopalea for the rest of my life.”

“For me, better days are not on the way,” Gayla concludes. “They’ve already arrived.”*
