date.
Speaking of Julian, the Southern California Triumph Owners Association, SCTOA, will
be hosting their usual Julian escape Nov. 3rd-5th. They have invited anyone from the
San Diego group to join them either for the weekend or just the day. Contact Rob
Bowen at 909 899-5312 or email: [email protected] for more details. For
room reservations, contact the Julian Lodge at 800 542-1420.

ONCE A CAR-GUY OR CAR-GAL, ALWAYS………
Article by Ron Lambrecht and Steve Loeffler
Given the shortage of TCCSD and British Car events in July, we thought we would throw a different kind of car experience at you – the Coronado 4th of July Parade. In the early ‘70’s, Steve Loeffler, ’69 TR-6, and an Austin Healy 3000 owner drove in the parade carrying senior class officers from Coronado High School sit-ting on the back decks of their roadsters. This year it was Ron and Anne Lambrecht’s turn ~ for their 5th 4th Parade!
Ron: “My parade-ride isn’t quite as fast as my ’70 Spitsix, but it is a hoot none-the-less. Coronado averages around 200,000 spectators. I had to stop half way through the parade and add water to my radiator (thought it was full but apparently it wasn’t) and got a standing ovation when I fired the “T” back up and continued down the parade route.
Since high school I have been carrying around an old buggy seat that I restored a couple years ago and had planned to use it as a garden bench. The seat turned out too nice for that purpose, so I made a bracket and mounted it in the bed of my “T” pickup. It comes in handy for parades and taking neighbors bar hopping. The couple in the back seat are our Merrill Lynch money manager and his fiancé.”

TRIUMPHS, TRIALS, AND TRIBULATIONS
If you have never driven your Triumph, or something as racy as a Model “T” in a parade, perhaps it is some-thing we should look into as a club. There are more than enough parades to go around in San Diego County as well as Rosarita Beach and Ensenada, and they are always looking for new entrants with more than one horse-power.
If you do an internet search for the Coronado 4th of July parade the suggestion you will find follows:
“You should get there by 4:30AM and wait across the street from ‘your spot’ if you want front row seating on the curb or grassy median! Blankets and chairs can be placed in position at 5:00AM in order to reserve your place. Tip, you can also take the ferry over from downtown San Diego to Coronado. The traffic is going to be heavy, so plan on walking or biking.”
This best describes the level of spectator participation in the Coronado parade. Anne and I have participated in the parade for the past five years and it is one of the year’s great highlights. Smiles and cheers light up the route as the “Ts” garner excitement and enthusiasm from children of all ages to military veterans and commu-nity leaders.
This year’s Uncle Sam says he wants your Triumph in the parade next year ~ either the Christmas Parade or the 4th of July Parade.
Come join the Parade!

TRIUMPHS, TRIALS, AND TRIBULATIONS
European Vacation: Mary Turner and Hailie Style!
For the past couple of years I have been obsessed with moving to France to enjoy the European car culture. Origi-
nally I wanted to give England a shot, but the weather and the cost took the shine off of that dream. I have been
to France but have never looked with an eye to living there. Being a fan of classic car racing, I knew about the rac-
ing that takes place in the ancient city center of Angouleme in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine-Charente region of south-
west France. I was checking out the region’s tourist website one day and found out that it is the second-most sun-
ny location in France after to Cote d’Azur. That led me to wondering about what it might cost to live there on a
semi-permanent basis. The internet is an evil thing with real estate websites a close second. Oh yeah… and House
Hunters International is evil too!
I started digging around and what I found was that housing prices are really affordable and that foreigners are
able to purchase real estate with no restrictions. Further research led me to a number of other positives: cheese,
butter, bread, fantastic roads, and amazing landscapes. And excellent healthcare that is reasonable to afford.
With all of this in mind, I started planning my last big trip with Hailie for the foreseeable future before she gradu-
ates from college and heads off to work with its attendant lack of vacation time. Whenever we travel a big priority
is finding at least one car event to attend. This time we found two!
The first was hosted by the TR Register Germany and specifically by the Hannover and Teutonen (Osnabrück)
groups. This event was to celebrate the 50th Birthday of the TR6. Osnabruck was the perfect location, being home
of the design firm Karmann who designed the TR6 for Triumph. The event included a visit to the Karmann factory
where we toured their very good and rarely open to the public museum. The museum contains many rare proto-
types from the long and storied life of Karmann. Included were Porches, Volkswagens, Audis, a bunch of German
marques that I have never heard of, and a few Fords to boot. There was even a TR6! The breadth of design was
amazing with some of their prototypes from the 1980’s and 90s looking modern even today. The firm was really
quite forward thinking which made it all the more tragic for them to go out of independent business. However,
they were purchased by Volkswagen who kept the facility open and maintains design functions there today. The
highlight of the day at Karmann was seeing so many TR6s all parked together in the factory lot. This must have
been how the cars looked in Coventry- all lined up and ready to ship to America.
The rest of the weekend was filled with beautiful and well-planned scenic drives. The Host Clubs did a fantastic
job of making sure that nobody could get lost by having people at every turn there to wave us on through. Chase
cars made sure that anyone who broke down did not do so alone. They also had a Welcome Event that was the
most fun that we have ever had on arrival day. This was followed the next night by a banquet that actually had
good food. The highlight of the weekend however was the presence of Mr. Wilhelm Schwebe (TR6 Design Group
Manager of Karmann). The 91 year old Mr. Schwebe was moved to tears with a standing ovation that lasted sev-
eral minutes. A video was shown of Mr. Schwebe being interviewed which detailed the birth of the TR6 from con-
cept to final product (if I can get permission to share a link to the interview I will pass it along). The final day
found the group at the Melle Motor Museum which is worth a stop if you are in the area. The museum is rightly
proud that all of their cars are functional and are used at events regularly. We were sad to depart as the organiz-
ers had made us so welcome and included. They were patient with my ancient German and made every effort to
speak

English whenever possible. Participation included people from all over Europe and the UK. One person even
drove their TR6 from Southern Spain, around 2500 miles round trip he said.
The next event was in jolly ole England and was something that I have wanted to do for quite some time. It is
called the Super Scramble and takes place at the Bicester Heritage Centre. The site is a former RAF base that
has been preserved and repurposed as a car-centric destination. There are dealers, specialists of all kinds
(need a magneto restored for your Bentley anyone?), and other esoteric car related businesses. We totally
lucked out with the weather and were greeted with 68 degrees and partly cloudy skies with no chance of
rain. We took the train from London and walked to the Centre on a road full of classic and exotic cars and
motorcycles. Some folks didn’t bother with walking or driving as the event also caters to classic airplanes
with quite a few flying in for the day. We spent the next six hours enjoying seeing cars that we don’t usually
get to see up close much less running and driving around. There was also a small track where various cars
and motorcycles took laps which was an awesome bonus. The laps are popular enough that many people just
set up their chairs and hang out the whole time watching the cars, chatting, and drinking beer. Hailie and I
ended the event with a power walk back to the station in time to catch our train by literally 10 seconds. If you
ever find yourself in the UK, I highly recommend checking this place out (http://bicesterheritage.co.uk/). You
won’t regret it!
Hailie and I were gone a month and had a great time. We visited the monolithic site of Carnac in Brittany,
found that there is really no coast road on the French Atlantic, stayed in a few dodgy hotels here and there,
went to two German spas and did them German-style, I walked to Belgium from France while Hailie did
homework, and we went to two Women’s World Cup Soccer games. I would say that we were pretty lucky all
the way around with nice people everywhere and fantastic weather as a bonus.
That leads me back full circle to the reason we took this trip to begin with: checking out the Charente region
of France as a possible landing spot for my dream car-centric retirement home. We spent five days in the
town of Nanteuil-en-Vallee which is named as a Small Town of Character. It is an ancient and beautiful village
along the river. The gite we rented was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The hosts were
friendly and just our sort of people. We knew this to be true when Hailie went through the gate to get the
key and I hear her exclaim “Wow… what a nice TR3!” to their utter amazement.
We chose this area due to the proximity of the towns of Ruffec and Civray. Both are big enough to provide
anything you might want and have transportation links as well. We drew a 20 kilometer circle around Ruffec
and did a quarter each day to get a feel for the land. We learned a lot this way which may help to narrow
down a location. We also talked to a real estate agent to find out what it really takes to buy and set up house
which was pretty illuminating. We were able to find some of the houses that we saw online which helped to
clarify what you can get for the money (a lot) and in what kind of environment I would prefer to live (we
stayed in a village to see if that was the life for me but quickly found out that it wasn’t). I came back from the
trip more enthused about France as a possibility. In five years or so, if you don’t see me around, that is where
you will probably find me. So come for a visit. Time will tell if I can make it happen but you have to have
dreams
