    To Make a Poem

Take a newspaper Take a pair of scissorsChoose from the paper an article as long as you are planning to make your poemCut the article out

Next carefully cut out each of the words that make up the article and put them in a bagShake gently

Next take each clipping out one after another in the order in which they left the bagCopy conscientiouslyThe poem will look like you

And there you are -- an infinitely original author endowed with a charming sensibility though beyond theunderstanding of the vulgar.

"oet and tirelessly energetic propagandist for #ada$ Tristan T!ara$ whose given name was Samuel%osenstock$ was born into a well-off &ewish family in %omania. 'e attended a (rench private school in

)ucharest as a youth and while in high school met *on +inea and ,arcel &anco$ both of whom shared hisinterest in (rench poetry. Together they founded the literary maga!ine Simbolul $ in which T!ara$ under the pseudonym S. Samyro$ published a selection of poems written in %omanian and influenced by (renchsymbolism.

*n /$ seemingly as the result of a family scandal$ T!ara0s parents sent him to 1urich$ where he enrolled ata university to study philosophy. 'is first poem signed with the name Tristan T!ara 2t!ara being the%omanian for land3 appeared in 4ctober of that year. %omania did not enter the war until 5$ but it is notclear when T!ara might have been first drafted for service. *n the fall of 5 he received papers grantinghim a deferral of military service$ and in 6 he was relieved from military duty.

Shortly after his arrival in 1urich$ T!ara reunited with &anco and &anco0s brother 7eorges$ with whom$according to 'ugo )all0s diary$ he attended the opening night of the Cabaret +oltaire. 4ver the course of theyear in 5$ T!ara0s activities at the Cabaret of reciting his poems and those of others led to a more activerole in coordinating and planning #ada events. 'e also$ probably through the influence of %ichard'uelsenbeck$ became interested in African poetry. 'e incorporated into his poetry scraps of sound$ bits ofnewspaper fragments$ and phrases resembling African dialects. )eginning in November 5$ T!aracollected and translated African and 4ceanic poems from anthropology maga!ines in the 1urich library. Thesoir8es n9gres at the Cabaret +oltaire led to T!ara0s lifelong collecting of African and 4ceanic art. 4n &uly:;$

%eminiscent of 391 and with a strong "arisian bias along Littérature lines 2like Dada 53$ Dadaphone0s visualinterest is mostly in its insistent typographic density$ rather than its illustration--though it does include a

beautiful abstract Schadograph$ purporting to show Arp and Serner in the %oyal Crocodarium in Eondon$ aswell as the spiralingly !any"icabia drawing on the front cover. *t includes an example of the broadside =,anifestation #ada$= designed

by Tristan T!ara$ originally stapled in the middle of the issue$ as is sometimes found. A great su!s de sandale$ the ,anifestation #ada was the third$ and most elaborate$ of three #ada demonstrations after thearrival of T!ara in "aris$ precipitating plans for the (estival #ada. This broadside handbill$ printed on pinkstock$ with red mechanomorphic line drawings by "icabia superimposed over the text$ is one of the bestephemera of "aris #ada$ and among the rarest. *n addition to providing a complete program of the
