Chairman’s Chat

Hope you are all having a good summer and have been busy making films for the new season. Along with member's of Burnley Film Club I have been very busy making a film about someone who wins the lottery titled "Some you win Some you Don't", a good comedy drama. I am sure you will be pleased with the announcement that Burnley Festival is to Continue in 2017. Further details on page 11 of this issue. Our next major event is the North West Film Festival and AGM to be held at our usual venue Chads Theatre Cheadle Hulme. Further details are on page 5 of this issue. We look forward to welcoming Our First Lady Judge for some time and hope you will support the event. As your Competitions Officer I hope you will help by submitting your entries as soon as possible. I was pleased to see that we had more North West entries in the BIAFF competition this year so hopefully these will be entered into our Regional Competitions too!! At our AGM we will be saying goodbye to John & Judy Gleaves who have served on the Regional Council for many years. Judy as Membership Secretary and John for Regional Secretary. Anyone wishing to be nominated for either of these posts should complete the attatched nomination form on page 18 of this issue. Further information about each post can be obtained from me on 01254 208654.

Secretary’s Scribbles

The date of the June meeting was altered because a number of members were unable to attend. Therefore the meeting was held on 14th. June, 2016, at Preston.

The Tripod editor, Susan Moore, said that she had decided to publish the magazine in its previous format and not in A5 in response to requests which she had received from members.

It was reported that attendances at the Regions events were down in comparison with previous years. There was discussion on suitable venues for the Mersey Ten, while this year’s AGM and Film Festival will be held at CHADS on 10th. November. 2016.

Members of Burnley attended the meeting, and a long and detailed discussion of the format of the Burnley Film Festival was held. It was obvious that the members of that club had looked long and hard at the for-mat of future events. It was decided that the Festival should be solely Burnley’s event, but that it should be in a modified format. The event to start at ‘dinner time’ and finish at 5-30 – 6-00 p.m. the competition should be judged in advance, and as a result of this, the Festival would be held on a Sunday (1-30 – 5-30) as the venue would be more readily available. Modest refreshments would be served part way through the afternoon. There would be an adjustment of the entry price, and clubs or individuals who entered an entry, must attend the event.

There was discussion on the status of the NW Region in general. A survey showed that out of 19 clubs, 7 have the IAC logo on their publicity; 12 have a link to the IAC; and 5 – 7 had no reference to the IAC at all. Furthermore, no club publicity mentioned the Region’s magazine “Tripod.”

With the depleting members on the NW Council, it was essential the ‘new blood’ should be sought and new members should be approached personally. The Council could move around the Region for its meet-ings, as does the National Council.

With the National AGM date beginning to appear over the horizon, Jim asked for entries for the Mermaid competitions – the one and ten minute competitions. Entries should be with Jim Whalley by 24th. of Sep-tember.

Teacher * Solicitor * Film Maker

"Before I retired my two main occupations were being an infant school Teacher, then a child protection solicitor. Being a teacher was creative but when I was working as a solicitor, I desperately needed a creative Outlet.

While I was still working I developed a passion for making films. I joined Sut-ton Coldfield Movie Makers in 2008 because I was so keen to have People to ‘talk film’ to. It has fulfilled my needs perfectly. We have a wonderful group of members with a terrific fund of knowledge and experience, as well as being lovely people.

I like learning about all the different aspects of film making and trying new things.

The films I have made demonstrate this because they range in genre. My first love is documentary but I like to try my hand at anything. I’ve made a few teeny fiction films. I’ve had a go at Animation. I have also made music and wedding videos, holiday films, local events and Instructional videos. I love Wildlife, so that features in many of my films. I’ve been involved in making films with Sut-ton Coldfield Movie Club.

I have judged at club competitions, regional competitions and BIAFF. In a way it is strange that I have done so much judging, because I find it very difficult. I am always longing to give every film a prize. For me the joys of judging are watching the films and analysing them to give feedback, which I hope will help the film makers in their next project. I find ranking films very difficult. Each film is unique, each film is a work of art, and yet, competitions can’t happen without someone having a go at weighing up their strengths and weaknesses so as to reach a conclusion about which are ‘the best’. In the end that is a personal choice.

I very much dislike disappointing the film makers whose films don’t get the prizes. Ideally I would like us to find a way of celebrating our films without competing against each other, but we haven't got there yet, so for now I accept Invitations to judge, and do my best!

Page 7: Tripod - the film & video Institute€¦ · Secretary’s Scribbles The date of the June meeting was altered because a number of members were unable to attend. Therefore the meeting

I enter my own films in competitions. I find competitions a great incentive to ‘finish a project’. The pinnacle of my awards has been a 5 star ranking at BIAFF and the same film being chosen for UNICA (achieving a Diploma of Honour).

Was that the best film I’ve ever made? I’m not sure! There are others that have not done so well in competitions but have given me great pleasure and have been well received by audiences.

Often teeny films which have been or would be looked down on at BIAFF are the ones which audiences most enjoy.

If you come to the North West Regional Film Festival

you can Judge for yourself!"

Quick Guide to UNICA

What is it?

UNICA is an international organisation whose aim is to promote friendship between nations through film. It is 78 years old.

At present there are around 30 members, consisting of organisations representing amateur film makers in a specific country. The IAC is a member.

Each year there is a week-long UNICA Festival where the member organisations present a programme of films in friendly competition. An international jury discusses the films in public, and then awards medals.

The Festivals takes place in a different country each year and are organised by a team from the host coun-

try. In addition to the film shows and jury discussions, the hosts organise outings to local places of interest

or cultural events.

Any film enthusiast can attend a UNICA festival. The languages of UNICA are French, German and Eng-

lish and the official programmes, speeches, discussions are translated into all three languages. The rest of

the time, the visitors communicate with each other in whatever language works - frequently English.

You are likely to find familiar faces from the IAC there, as well as lots of English speakers from other

lands, so you will definitely be able to find someone to talk to even if you can

only speak English.

UNICA 2016

This year the UNICA Festival is in Suceava in Eastern Romania from Fri 19th to Fri 26th August. It prom-

ises to be a special event. Suceava, a city of around 100,000 people dates back to the 1300s. It has a 14th

century fortress, several medieval churches and interesting museums. The festival organisers have planned

one full day and one half day excursion. These are opportunities to see some of the beautiful countryside of

the region, known as Bucovina. Bucovina is also famous for its painted monasteries. How to take part

Everything you need to know is on the Festival website: www.unica2016.ro.

(Click on the Union Jack image top right if it does not display in English.)

You need to :

1) Book your flights

Until recently there were two options: fly to Suceava via Bucharest or fly direct to Iasi airport which is

about 170km away from Suceava. As you will see on the Festival website there are not many scheduled

flights into Suceava from Bucharest, but the organisers have persuaded TAROM to put on an extra flight

from Bucharest to Suceava on Fri 26th Aug ust and a return flight to Bucharest on Sat 27th August.

Wizz Air has just announced direct flights from Luton airport to and from Suceava beginning in August.

There are direct flights to Iasi from many places in Europe. If you travel to Suceava airport, the Festival

will ptransport into the city. From Iasi, the organisers can arrange a bus transfer at a cost of 25 Euros.

2) Book your hotel

The Festival website lists a range of hotels with information on prices, distance from the Festival venue and

how to book. Prices include breakfast. Be sure to mention the UNICA Festival when you book. You may

find it easier to phone the hotel you choose to make the initial contact.

Page 11: Tripod - the film & video Institute€¦ · Secretary’s Scribbles The date of the June meeting was altered because a number of members were unable to attend. Therefore the meeting

3) Register with the organisers

Follow the menu item 'Registration' on the Festival website to download the registration form. The

'Congress Map' referred to is actually a ticket to attend the events that have a charge attached. The film

shows themselves are free. The chargeable events are listed on the form so that you can pick and choose

but these are the heart of the social side of UNICA. If you can afford it, it is definitely worth paying for the

lot. The ticket for all events costs 200 Euros, rising to 220 Euros after 1st July. (This 'early bird' price is to

encourage early registration.) Be sure to send your completed form to the email address listed and let them

know how and when you will arrive and depart.

Questions?

Send an email to me, the IAC Web master, at [email protected] and I will do my best to help.

I hope to see you there.

Jan Watterson

IAC Web Master

Although this may all be short notice for this year, it gives you an insight to how the event works, including

the UNICA web address and I believe the 2017 event will be held in Dortmund in Germany 5th-12th

August. That’s a lot nearer to the UK, it would be great to have a large contingent of UK Film Makers

attending, so watch this space …. I for one am very interested, brushing up my German now, although I

can remember the essentials Toilet, Food & Beer!.

Around the Clubs

We promised to confirm to you our future intentions regarding the Burnley Film Festival. We are now pleased to let you know that Burnley Film Makers is planning to continue with a Film Festival in 2017, albeit in an amended format. The event will still be held at the Burnley Youth Theatre and will concentrate on being a film competition without a guest speaker. This will enable the programme to be shortened, to focus on being a film competition and run from approximately 1.30 - 5.30 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon- Sunday, March 19th, 2017.

As in the past, clubs will be invited to submit a club entry not exceeding 15 minutes in length. The Burnley Trophy will be awarded to the Best Overall Entry and a trophy will be presented to the Runner-Up as well as an award for the Best Use of Humour, further certificates of merit will be issued at the discretion of the judge. Entries will be now be pre-judged and will need to be submitted four weeks rather than two weeks before the Festival. A nationally recognised filmmaker will act as our judge and winners will be an-nounced on the day with comments being reported and copies distributed to entrants. Entries will need to be submitted by February 18th.

Refreshments, at an interval in mid-programme, will be served by outside caterers. These will be of a light buffet nature - but sufficient to sustain you during the afternoon!

We wanted to keep you informed of the situation and hope that the new format will appeal. We have tried

Page 12: Tripod - the film & video Institute€¦ · Secretary’s Scribbles The date of the June meeting was altered because a number of members were unable to attend. Therefore the meeting

to take account of suggestions made by clubs and to keep costs under control. We also outlined our cur-rent thoughts at the last meeting of the IAC Regional Committee and received an encouraging feed-back from members.

We ask that yourself and club members make a note of the dates in your diaries/programmes. We look for-ward to receiving your special support for our decision not to let this special event disappear from the re-gion's calendar and trust that you will find the adapted format attractive.

Meanwhile, may I ask that you confirm to me that I have used the most appropriate e mail contact address for further information. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries at this stage.

Ron Harrison, Burnley Festival Secretary More details will be forwarded in due course.

Pendle Movie Makers

A request by the Town Council that Pendle Movie Makers record their latest "Colne Commemorates"

had to be turned down as several members were to be at the wedding of Charles Howard Greenwood,

their technical wizard and member since birth effectively, to Janice, an important lady at their bank

(not a coincidence!) The day was very wet so the camera-people were rather relieved to have had an

excuse.

Also in June, Treasurer Daphne and Secretary Peter Copestake came to the regular meeting on their

Diamond Wedding and were congratulated and given presents from the other members.

Both events were much more pleasurable than filming in the rain!

Congratulations Peter & Daphne and Charles & Janice

On June 20th I had the very sad news from Margaret Wright, that her husband David, my long

standing friend and past member of SCVS, had died in tragic circumstances.

I had known David since the mid nineteen seventies when he joined the club. We spent many

happy holidays together journeying around the world. He was the inspiration for many of my

films. He wrote the script for my film 'Summer Youth' and the prologue for 'Daylight on Dal'

and recorded the live sound for this film.

He also wrote the story for other successful Indian films.... The Taj of Shah Jahan' and 'River of Prayer', and the Nep-

alese film 'Skyline of Nepal'. He wanted to make a record of his wonderful garden at Wildacres and asked me to film

it. It was his idea to tell the story through the eyes of their little dog, Pip.

Margaret narrated the voice and it proved very successful and became a happy reminder of those days in Consall.

I, and his many friends will miss David so very much. We extend our deepest sympathy to Margaret and David's

Brother and Sisters and their families.
