Three local men went deep sea fishing off the coast of South Carolina and hit a bad storm and were marooned on a desert island. As the days slowly went by, they dreamed of what it would be like to be at home with their friends and family, to be back at their jobs doing the things they loved. One day one of the men found a bottle. When he opened it, a genie came out and announced that he would grant each of them one wish. “Really?” one of the men said, “Boy, I sure would love to be back in North Myrtle Beach with my wife and kids.” POOF! — in an instant he was gone. Seeing that, the second man immediately gave his request,” I want to be back in North Myrtle Beach with my fiancé!” And in a flash, POOF! — he was gone too. The third man was left all alone sitting on the sandy beach and said, “Wow, it’s lonely here with my friends gone. I sure wish they’d come back. And POOF.
I know that February is the month of Cupid and hearts and love, but there is another L word that I would like to focus on - It is the word laugh. And I propose that we do more of it.
I came across a joke that will surely make you ladies laugh out loud — and you men too– that is, if you know what’s good for you - - LOL!
A small-town couple was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and their long, loving relationship had long been the talk of the town. For this special occasion, a local newspaper reporter paid them a visit to inquire as to the secret of their happy marriage.
“Well,” explained the husband, “it really all goes back to our honeymoon. We visited the Grand Canyon and took a trip down to the bottom of the canyon by pack mule. We hadn’t gone too far when my wife’s mule stumbled. My wife quietly said ‘That’s once.’ We proceeded a little farther when the mule stumbled again. Once more my wife quietly spoke: ‘That’s twice.’ We hadn’t gone a half-mile when the mule stumbled a third time. My wife promptly removed a revolver from her purse, hopped down off the beast, and shot the mule dead. I began to protest over her treatment of the mule when she looked at me and quietly said, ‘That’s once.”’ I hope you liked that. Now, I’ve heard that children laugh 300 to 400 times a day while we adults laugh only a mere 15! Believe it or not, experts say that laughing aids digestion, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, boosts the immune system, triggers the release of endorphins which are the body’s natural painkillers, heals broken relationships and produces a general sense of well-being! Let’s not take everything so seriously! Let’s start laughing at ourselves a little, and laughing at our enemy’s attempts to keep us burdened and oppressed! Truly there is a lot that is going on around the church that is serious business. The other day I had a meeting that went long but was productive. The only problem was, I needed a break, and instead of a break with a laugh, I got a headache. We can get so caught up in the details that when miss the fun times that God has given us. Stop and smell the roses sometimes. Enjoy life around you, through the intense times and the not so intense times. God has our victory –always! And there’s so much work to be done! Have fun and put a smile on your face.
Love ya always! Michael

FINANCES OF THE CHURCH Part II Holy Spirit
Happy New Year to all & what a perfect time to finish our discussion on God’s Holy Spirit! In the December newsletter, we discussed 2 main
themes: The 3rd person of the Trinity coming into our hearts when we are reborn & the dominant role of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives to empower us to live the life God has planned for us. Two important words in that statement are TRANSFORM & POWER. The power of the Holy
Spirit is the same power Father God used to raise Jesus from the dead. Don’t ever underestimate it!
The Holy Spirit gives power to our words & uses them to bring glory to Jesus, both when we pray & interact with others. He gives us power to
monitor & control what we say, so that when we are offended, the Spirit will remind us of God’s love, & we will not react in a hateful manner.
When we are criticized, the Spirit will heal the hurt, & we won’t lash out. When the Holy Spirit purifies our heart, He gives self-control so that we speak words that please God. He guides us daily, keeping our thoughts clean & our actions honest. He motivates us to be witnesses for
Christ, enabling us to speak openly & boldly of Jesus, His commands, and promises. The Spirit gives us courage, perseverance, confidence, & resolve.
The Spirit helps us understand the Bible (“…guides us into all truth”), illuminating its meaning for our lives so we can actually follow the Scrip-
ture, not just read it. The Holy Spirit helps us begin to know God’s thoughts & plans for us. He helps us to talk with Him & to expect Him to an-
swer our prayers (in His own time & His own way). He brings God’s Word to our remembrance—individually as we study Scripture and collec-tively at church via Pastor Ritter’s sermons.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin & unbelief as we sometimes give in to the 3 battles of the world, the flesh, & the devil. But He gives us right-
ness with God (righteousness) by our belief in Jesus & our obedience to His commands. He baptizes us into God’s family, sealing our salvation
securely & protecting us from extreme evil. The Holy Spirit is called the “restrainer” which means He holds Satan & his demons in God’s con-
trol. (Check out Revelation during the Tribulation when the ‘restrainer’ leaves this world allowing Satan indwelling in the antichr ist (temporary) control! Scary!!)
When we say “We are filled with the Spirit”, we mean we live under the Spirit’s control. We must ask God to “keep putting His love & power in
our hearts”. We don’t do the filling; God does but He wants us to ask for this. It is part of God’s grand design that we regularly pray for His Spirit to fill our hearts. “Being filled” means our lives are totally available to Him; we are sensitive to anything that comes between us & God;
we are especially aware of the presence of God; we walk in complete dependence on Him; He is able to work/speak through us & direct us; He
is able to empower our gifts. This is how we function as authentic Christians (not phony talkers), live life to the fullest everyday, & cope with
temptations & hardships—all the things God wants for us & from us. A heart filled with the Spirit is teachable, grateful, & humble.
An extremely important role of the Spirit in our lives is to give us”discernment”. This refers to the choices & decisions we make on a daily ba-
sis. Discernment prevents “wrong” choices like negatively reacting, striking back, seeking revenge, loosing our temper, manipulation to get our
own way, etc. Discernment means allowing God to constantly influence us for good: differentiating right from wrong; giving positive direction to
our actions; prompting us about what to avoid and/or who to be around; knowing who & what to believe (ie avoiding false teachers/doctrines). Most importantly, we pray for discernment to know when we are being directed by God vs. evil forces.
The Holy Spirit gives each believer special gifts for building up each other & the church body. Not every Christ follower has every gift. We are expected to use these gifts to serve God & His people. Pray that the Holy Spirit will help you use your gift to the utmost or if necessary, pray
that you will be given insight into discovery of your special gift. Some gifts of the Spirit include but are not limited to: preaching, teaching, healing, nurturing, giving, leadership, administering, building, prophesying, showing mercy, preparing others for service, encouraging others, distinguishing spirits, kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues, miracles, faith, wisdom, knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)
Gifts of the Spirit must be differentiated from FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT. The FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is the spontaneous consequence (by-product/result/outcome) of a Spirit filled life in believers. Fruit of the Spirit are character traits found in the nature of Christ. In other words, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the result is to show these Christ-like qualities. Experiencing these traits makes our lives satisfying to God, to others, & to ourselves; they give us a fulfilled & abundant life. They can grow stronger daily when we pray for them through the Holy Spirit.
The Fruit of the Spirit (9) is: love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, goodness/generosity, faithfulness, patience, & self-control. (Gal. 5: 22)
Let us pray this Holy season and daily that we will be filled with His Spirit to live abundant lives & be rewarded with eternal life with Him.
New Project Committee Will meet on Monday, February 10th at 9:30 am in the A. G.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE
WILL MEET ON TUESDAY,
FEBRUARY 11TH AT 930 AM
IN THE A. G. GREENE BUILIDNG
Missions Corner by Mahala Pearsall, Chair
The missions committee is planning 2014 and would
like input, from the congregation, for needs in our
community. Below are some of the missions we do
support. We are open to new suggestions. The
committee meets the 3rd Monday of each month in
the A.G. Greene building at 9:00. Come join us.
North Strand Helping Hands
This month we are emphasizing CANNED MEATS.
Please bring your donations and place them in the
GREY BINS at the exits to the sanctuary or in the
mission’s corner. As always, we will take other
donations too. Please remember we are still collect-
ing PEANUTBUTTER and JELLY for the ASAP
program. Their supplies are very low.
Master's Meal
We serve a hot meal to whoever is in need each
Wednesday. Call Gerry Ferguson at 249-2040 for
opportunities to help. This is a self sustaining
ministry so donations are very welcome.
Street Reach
Last month we served over 200 at Street Reach.
Most seasonal workers are out of work and are
searching for their next meal. This church is faithful
in their support of this mission. We will serve our
next meal Feb. 2nd, Super Bowl Sunday. We will
cook early and have Street Reach kitchen volunteers
serve the meal. Please call Mahala at 424-7844 if
you would like to help. I promise you will be blessed
by your time there. It is a very rewarding ministry.
We prepare the food and serve but we do not do
dishes! There is a kitchen team that cleans up after
us!
Mobile Meals
Our next time to deliver meals will be Feb. 24-28.
Please call Janice Givens at 399-5801 if you can help.
Missions news continued: Armed Services Assistance Program (ASAP)
We are currently serving 29 families. This ministry
helps veterans during difficult times. We help pro-
vide food items to those veterans that have lost
their jobs due to unfortunate circumstances. We
need volunteers to help purchase and distribute the
food once per month. Thank you for supporting our
bake sale last month. We appreciate your support.

STEWARDSHIP REPORT
February has been designated as the time we will be making our
annual pledge to our church. The pledge cards and letters will be
going out early the first week of the month and we will celebrate
Commitment Sunday on February 23.
Please be in pray for our Stewardship Campaign and prayerfully
consider your giving. There are so many wonderful, exciting
things happening in the life of the church and we give thanks for
this. Won't you be a part of this?
Remember our Mission Statement -
"With open hearts, open minds, and open doors, our church family strives to keep Christ at the center of all we do; seeking those
without Christ, strengthening those in Christ and serving the world around us in love for Christ.” Emily Sharp, Stewardship
Chair
"Tell those rich in the world's wealth to quit be-ing so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomor-row. Tell them to go after God...to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they'll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life." 1 Timothy 6:17-19, The Message
By Melody Evans
I can hardly believe we are now in the second month of 2014. It seems like we just finished Christmas music. Time seems to pass so quickly sometimes, and Christmas seemed to be over before I wanted. Most of you know we went to Disney World with our family after Christmas. The one thing about being there this time of year is that they play Christmas music until after New Year’s Eve. I loved that and it extended Christmas for me. Things are not slowing down too much for the music department. We are planning a fund raising dinner---"Fine Arts Dinner", on Saturday, February 15th. We will have dinner, the hand bell choir will play, and the Chancel choir members will sing. Please put this on your calendar and join us for a great night of food and music. In response to several requests, we are planning a hymn sing for the end of the month. There will be a flyer in the bulletin for your hymn sug-gestions. You probably have noticed we have several snow birds that are singing with the choir. They sing with their respective choirs and enjoy singing with us while here in the south. We are glad to have them with us. I mentioned earlier about being at Disney World. It was our granddaughter's first visit. She was thrilled by so many things. She loves animals and princesses. It was very crowded, especially certain areas. The longest line was for her to have her picture made with Elsa and Anna from the movie "Frozen". The wait was almost 3 1/2 hours, but the joy this brought her and the smile on her face was worth the wait. My wish for all of you as we go through this year is to have this kind of joy in your heart. This year, I am going to write a little background on a hymn each month. This month is a hymn written by Luther Bridgers, a Methodist minister who was a native to North Carolina. The hymn is known by 2 titles, He Keeps Me Singing" and "There's Within My Heart a Melody". Rev. Bridg-ers wrote this hymn in the early 1900s, after a tragedy in his life where his wife and sons died in a house fire. During his grief, he recalled the promises in the Bible and that God is strong enough to keep us singing.
Pastor/Congregation Prayer Program
The pastor and we as the congregation are always in prayer for others. Now we have the opportunity to pray for other members of our congregation every week. Six names of members will be drawn at ran-dom and Pastor Michael Ritter, along with all of us, will pray for the individuals and their family. Below are the names of the members selected for February.
Week of February 2nd Don Moore Margaret Payne and Martin Dorothy Cassidy Charlene Kesler Dave Dickson Jesse Dumas Week of February 9th Bill and Sue Blackburn Chip Smith and boys Chick and Carolyn Marker Rob McCord Bubba, Darlene Collins and boys Mary Fay Hall Week of February 16th Dave and Carolyn Brittain Keith and Nancy Floyd Ruth Aiken Keith Nixon Ed and Joanna Prince Elayne and Harold Denis Week of February 23rd Robbie, Brenda, Isabella and Michael Stewart Bill and Clara McGrath Sara Coates and girls Ann Burgess Judy Potter Jane Cole
HELP NEEDED!
Have you been in the hospital and come home needing a little help, or a visit? Wouldn’t it be nice for your church to be there to help out? We are looking for someone to help coordinate such a service. Groups the person belongs to or volunteers would help the coordi-nator out. It would be someone who found a need and helped to be sure we care for our members. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity and contact Marie Peacock (843) 361-0038 if you feel moved to help out in this very meaningful way.
St. Patrick’s Day is A 'Coming Are you thinking Green? The Evangelism Committee is thinking green for the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. We are looking for those nice green plants to sell to the visitors at the festival on Saturday, March 15th. A green pot or a little green decoration
with the name of the plant and any special care needed is all we need. If you are able to help us out with some green thumb activity, would love to know we can count on you. If you can, please just return the slip below, or call Marie Peacock (843-361-0038) so we can get a tally of how many plants we will have to decorate our booth.

THANKS SO MUCH!
How can one not live victoriously when they have folks in their lives like the people at Trinity Unit-ed Methodist Church. Living victoriously is about choice when facing a difficult journey. While I was loosing my Mom and after her death, I had so many phone calls, words of encouragements, uplifting pray-ers, and those sweet and many cards that I will always cherish! Your CHURCH speaks joy despite hardship, unrelenting hope, a courageous spirit, and you cer-tainly gave me enduring strength to rely on God through this journey of my life. Know that you will always have a special place in my heart forever. God is certainly alive in your church! Continue to live victoriously and reaching out through the love of God, Theresa Jones
ARMED SERVICES ASSISTANCE PROGRAM UPDATE
We've begun a new year for the ASAP program. We would like to thank everyone once again for your kindness and generosity. As we
attempt to envision the needs of our veterans and active-duty military men and women the one thing we do know is that the need will be
there. Those who have served over the years and are still serving today
have felt the conch of our economy as much if not more so than the rest of us. We are consistently feeding between 30 to 35 families each
month is totally about 30,000 individual meals each year. Your support is paramount to our ability to complete this task. Once again this year we are requesting a fixed amount of three dollars per month
per family or $36 for the entire year of 2014. With your contribution along with the American Legion, and other committees of their post we
will prevent hunger in the homes of many of those who protect and serve us well.
Please continue to help us in this effort by making a check payable to Trinity United Methodist Church. Please place ASAP in the
memo portion. We would like to thank you in advance and pray God's blessing upon each and every one of you.
Many Blessings, Rev. Ed Daniel and the ASAP committee.

The Love Dare Challenge Revisited If you asked the average person how would you rate your marriage on a scale of 1 to 10 most people would answer in the higher numbers. Some would even proclaim an 11 or even a 12 claiming their marriage to be above average. The fact of the matter is there are no perfect marriages because there are no perfect people. The Love Dare challenge offers ways to make a bad marriage better and a good marriage great. Every-thing is based on biblical principles and God's plan for your union. Our first-class took place about four years ago and that group has bonded into a family with a class reunion every year. The Love Dare Challenge revisited will be a six-week program that will begin on Monday evening February 10 at 7 PM. Each class will last approximately one hour. During the class we will have open discus-sions based on the Bible and the love Dare information as well as our own personal experiences if you would like to share them. The class will be a lot of fun, loads of laughs and most important an opportunity to make our greatest undertaking in life (our marriage) the best it possibly be. No matter how young or old you may be. No matter how many years you've been married or even if you are just dating God’s word and the Love Dare challenge can greatly improve the quality of your relationship. The majority of the work will just consist of your attempting to make each day better than the day before in your home, in your marriage and ultimately in your lives. Joining this class by no means is a confession of marital problems. It is just an acceptance of the reality that there's nothing in life that can't be improved on. If you're interested in taking this class please fill out the bottom and leave it in the offering plate or contact the church office at 843-272-5236. Also please go to the following website prior to the first class and take the Love Dare Marriage Evaluation. You must be totally honest and willing to accept your personal shortcomings. Please bring a copy of the test results with you. Please put Love Dare Marriage Evaluation - B&H Publishing Group. in your search engine.

New Project Committee Progress
In January the New Project Committee met to see what needs we needed to address. Each need which has been presented to the committee made us realize that we need to address our growth challenges. It was decided to take advantage of the free service provided by a Congregational Specialist from the SC Conference to help us evaluate our needs. Jim Arnet and Millie Nelson, SC Conference Specialist, have been invited to meet with the committee and anyone else interested, to address possible directions which Trinity might take to address our growing need for space, and use of the space we presently have. Please share with the committee members your thoughts. The At Large members of the Administrative Board have been asked to be on the committee since they are to have the ears of the congregation. The members are: Jack Boward, Lee Bouton, Alan Faulkenberry, Don Little, Marie Peacock, Mike Walters, Michael Ritter and Elizabeth Cheezem. Remember our next Loose Change Sunday will be February 16th. We will continue to grow our savings for our next project to help meet the needs of a growing congregation.

Lent. Please submit your offerings to
[email protected] no later than Sunday, February 23rd!
Beginning on March 12th, Pastor Michael will be leading a Lenten Bible study during our Wednesday evening fellowship. The study, Final Words from
the Cross, will guide the group through an examination of Christ’s dying hours and his final words as seen and heard through those who were at the cross.
The study will run from March 12th-April 16th. There is a book available to accompany the study, but it is not required for participation. If you would like to

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A LAY SERVANT?
The Marion District Lay Servant Ministers Training School will offer “The Lay Servant Basic
Course” in March, 2014. The course is open to any lay member of the United Methodist
Church who desires to elevate their role in their local church. The goal of the “Lay Servant
Ministry” (LSM) is to develop principled Christian leaders for the church. Lay Servants work
in partnership with clergy and laity to build up the local church by assisting with church lead-
ership, congregational care, and church communication. Local Church Lay Servants may stand
in for absent pastors and on occasion fulfill roles as local preachers in other churches. Lay
Servants work in ways that allow pastors to reach their maximum effectiveness. Lay Servants
are effective teachers and leaders often facilitating small group studies and programs. Certifi-
cation for LSM is achieved via endorsement by the minister and church, completion of basic
and advanced courses, examination by the district committee on Lay Servant Ministries, and
then recognition by the conference committee.
Pastor Ritter would like to have a “team” of Lay Servants at Trinity. The brochure states:
“When a team of Lay Servants is called, equipped, sent and effectively deployed, the missional
results within the local congregation can energize the entire laity resulting in congregations better
prepared to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
If you are interested, please see Carolyn Marker or Pastor Ritter for more information on
LSM, dates & times, and location of the class.
