    GENESIS 2:18, 21-25/3:8-12, 20 (NRSV)

2:18 Then the LORD God said, "It isnot good that the man should be alone; Iwill make him a helper as his partner."

21 So the LORD God caused a deepsleep to fall upon the man, and he slept;then he took one of his ribs and closed upits place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the

LORD God had taken from the man hemade into a woman and brought her to theman. 23 Then the man said, "This at last isbone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;this one shall be called Woman, for out ofMan this one was taken." 24 Therefore aman leaves his father and his mother andclings to his wife, and they become one

flesh. 25 And the man and his wife wereboth naked, and were not ashamed.

3:8 They heard the sound of the LORDGod walking in the garden at the time ofthe evening breeze, and the man and hiswife hid themselves from the presence ofthe LORD God among the trees of thegarden. 9 But the LORD God called to the

man, and said to him, "Where are you?"10 He said, "I heard the sound of you in thegarden, and I was afraid, because I wasnaked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Whotold you that you were naked? Have youeaten from the tree of which I commanded

you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "Thewoman whom you gave to be with me, sgave me fruit from the tree, and I ate."

3:20 The man named his wife Eve,because she was the mother of all living

    1 SAMUEL 1:1-9A (NRSV)

1 There was a certain man ofRamathaim, a Zuphite from the hill counof Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah sof Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu sonZuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wivethe name of the one was Hannah, and thname of the other Peninnah. Peninnah h

gave a double portion, because he lovedher, though the LORD had closed herwomb. 6 Her rival used to provoke herseverely, to irritate her, because the LORhad closed her womb. 7 So it went on ye

eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah said to her,"Hannah, why do you weep? Why do younot eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I notmore to you than ten sons?" 9 After theyhad eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah roseand presented herself before the LORD.

8 Then Manoah entreated the LORD,and said, "O, LORD, I pray, let the man ofGod whom you sent come to us again andteach us what we are to do concerning the

boy who will be born." 9 God listened toManoah, and the angel of God came againto the woman as she sat in the field; but herhusband Manoah was not with her. 10 Sothe woman ran quickly and told herhusband, "The man who came to me theother day has appeared to me." 11 Manoahgot up and followed his wife, and came tothe man and said to him, "Are you the man

who spoke to this woman?" And he said, "Iam." 12 Then Manoah said, "Now whenyour words come true, what is to be theboy's rule of life; what is he to do?" 13 Theangel of the LORD said to Manoah, "Letthe woman give heed to all that I said to

her. 14 She may not eat of anything thatcomes from the vine. She is not to drinkwine or strong drink, or eat any unclean

thing. She is to observe everything that commanded her." 15 Manoah said to theangel of the LORD, "Allow us to detainyou, and prepare a kid for you." 16 Theangel of the LORD said to Manoah, "If detain me, I will not eat your food; but iyou want to prepare a burnt offering, theoffer it to the LORD." (For Manoah didknow that he was the angel of the LORD

17 Then Manoah said to the angel of theLORD, "What is your name, so that wemay honor you when your words cometrue?" 18 But the angel of the LORD sato him, "Why do you ask my name? It istoo wonderful."

22 And Manoah said to his wife, "W

shall surely die, for we have seen God."23 But his wife said to him, "If the LORhad meant to kill us, he would not haveaccepted a burnt offering and a grainoffering at our hands, or shown us all ththings, or now announced to us such thinas these." 24 The woman bore a son, annamed him Samson. The boy grew, and LORD blessed him.

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging

our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we

ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and be

silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes a

pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our

    everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation

which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed - even our own Blac

    brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindfu

of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love an

worship giving Your name the praise forevermore.

    Texas Legislator Speaks Truth

    to No Avail

(Extract From a Molly Ivins Article)

The words of Texas State LegislatorSenfronia Thomson, a black legislator fromHouston addressing the Texas House, speakingagainst the anti-gay marriage measure...

"I have been a member of this augustbody for three decades, and today is one of theall-time low points. We are going in the wrongdirection, in the direction of hate and fear anddiscrimination. Members, we all know what

this is about; this is the politics of divisivenessat it's worst, a wedge issue that is meant todivide.

Members, this is a distraction fromthe real things we need to be working on. Atthe end of this session, this Legislature, thisleadership, will not be able to deliver thepeople of Texas fundamental and fair answersto the pressing issues of our day.

Let's look at what this amendment

does not do: It does not give one Texas citizenmeaningful tax relief. It does not reform orfully fund our education system. It does notrestore one child to CHIP [Children's HealthInsurance Program] who was cut from healthinsurance last session. It does not put one dimeinto raising Texas' Third World access tohealth care. It does not do one thing to care foror protect one elderly person or one child inthis state. In fact, it does not even do anything

to protect one marriage."Members, this bill is about hate andfear and discrimination... When I was a smallgirl, white folks used to talk about 'protectingthe institution of marriage' as well. What theymeant was if people of my color tried to marrypeople of Mr. Chisum's color, you'd often find

the people of my color hanging from a treeFifty years ago, white folks thought interracmarriages were 'a threat to the institution ofmarriage.'

"Members, I'm a Christian and a prChristian. I read the good book and do my to live by it. I have never read the verse whit says, 'Gay people can't marry.' I have nevread the verse where it says, 'Thou shaltdiscriminate against those not like me.' I hanever read the verse where it says, 'Let's baour public policy on hate and fear anddiscrimination.' Christianity to me is love ahope and faith and forgiveness -- not hate a

discrimination.I have served in this body a lot of

years, and I have seen a lot of promisesbroken... So... now that blacks and womenhave equal rights, you turn your hatred tohomosexuals, and you still use your misguireading of the Bible to justify your hatred. Ywant to pass this ridiculous amendment so can go home and brag -- brag about what?Declare that you saved the people of Texas

from what?Persons of the same sex cannot ge

married in this state now. Texas law does nnow recognize same-sex marriages, civilunions, religious unions, domesticpartnerships, contractual arrangements orChristian blessings entered into in this stateor anywhere else on this planet Earth.

If you want to make your hatefulpolitical statements then that is one thing --

the Chisum amendment does real harm. Itrepeals the contracts that many single peoplhave paid thousands of dollars to purchase obtain medical powers of attorney, powers attorney, hospital visitation, joint ownershipand support agreements. You have lost youway. This is obscene...

"I thought we would be debatingeconomic development, property tax relief, protecting seniors' pensions and stem cellresearch to save lives of Texans who are

waiting for a more abundant life. Instead weare wasting this body's time with this politicalstunt that is nothing more than constitution-alizing discrimination. The prejudicesexhibited by members of this body disgust me.

Last week, Republicans used apolitical wedge issue to pull kids -- sweet littlevulnerable kids -- out of the homes of lovingparents and put them back in a state orphanage

just because those parents are gay. That's

disgusting."I have listened to the arguments. I

have listened to all of the crap... I want you toknow that this amendment [is] blowing smoketo fuel the hell-fire flames of bigotry.

    Then they passed the amendment.

Please be sure to say, I love you and Godbless you to Deacon Jimmie Fountain andDeacon Cathy Fountain today. This is their last

Sunday in worship with us. They leave forStockbridge, Georgia, tomorrow morning, June6, 2005.

Jimmie has also served with our StewardshCouncil. Cathy has not only served as adeacon. Cathy has also served with ourSanctuary Choir.

Their sacrifices, their love, their gifts and thprayers have propelled our church forward becoming what God would have us become

The powerful testimony that they gave to mabout what it meant to sacrifice for theLifestyle Stewardship Campaign is a testimthat will stay with me forever. They said ththey followed the vision that God gave me they made a sacrifice, living on a fixed inco

    as two retired persons.

Every time they sacrificed, however, God gback to them! God replaced what they hadsacrificed and then gave them some extratop of that!

They have built a home in Stockbridge,Georgia, and they are going there to live outhe rest of their lives and their retirement inbeauty and tranquility of that new home. A

we give thanks to God for them on this dayask you to say a special prayer for them andask you to remember the words of JeremiahRankin as they leave us. When the RankinBrothers were separated by death, ReverendRankin wrote these words:

    To Do Justice

This week, a very important matter is

going before Congress. In no uncertain terms,

the matter before Congress will answer this

question: Will higher education in this country

be afforded to all who have the ability and desire

to learn, or will higher education be reserved

only for those who have the financial and

scholastic resources to secure an education?

While funding a war that is immoral and

unjust, while placing countless thousands of

young American and Iraqis in harms way inorder to secure oil, while causing blood to spill

in order to let oil flow, while literally sending

young persons who could be learning into the

yawning jaws of death, George Bush is

    simultaneously proposing the elimination of

GEAR UP and TRIO programs. GEAR UP and

TRIO both assist young people who have the

desire to get an education, despite anydisadvantages they may face.

    GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness

and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a

federally-funded program whose mission is to

increase access to post secondary education

especially college for low income students.

TRIO Programs, which have been around for

over 34 years, such as Upward Bound and

Talent Search, service over 900,000 low income

and disabled students annually with a budget of

$460 million. In fact, right here at Trinity

    through the Trinity Higher Education

Corporation, we have served over 1800 stud

and over 200 seniors a year for the past thre

years, helping to get desiring students acces

    higher education.

However, all of this is at stake shou

the Bush budget prevail. Therefore, today,

are distributing a letter to your Congressman

Senator demanding that they stand for our

children, our future. We urge you to sign th

letter and return it to an usher, if you are

concerned about the future of our young peowho want to better their lives through educa

Urge your Representatives to invest in the li

of our children rather than war which kills o

    children.

    ACTION ITEMS:

    1. Sign the letter in support of expanding GEUP and TRIO programs for underprivilegstudents.

    2. BOYCOTT WAL-MART & SAMS CLU3. Subscribe to the TRUMPET

Thought for this week:Injustice anywhere is a threat to justiceeverywhere. We are caught in an inescapabl

network of mutuality, tied in a single garmedestiny. Whatever affects one directly, affecindirectly.

    STEWARDSHIP

    TO GIVEOR

    NOT TO GIVE?

A good steward is to be a cheerfugiver, but to whom should we give? First o

our list should be the local church which

should support its ministers and leaders, a

the poor, assist true widows and orphans a

    support traveling teachers and evangelists

Beyond our church, we should consider ot

believers with proven integrity. It is only

prudent to know to whom we are giving awhat they will do with the money. If they

wont answer all our questions, we should

    give.

Finally, those to whom we give sh

regularly keep us informed about their

ministry just as the Apostle Paul kept the

    Philippians informed about his.

If the local church were to fulfill t

    God-given responsibilities, the community

would see the church as its servant and wo

be more receptive to its message. If

    individuals followed these guidelines, we

could be ensured of making solid investm

    with eternal rewards.
