Trinity Trumpet September 2015 From the Interim Rector… We recently launched the first part of our 2016 pledge campaign by asking you to indicate how and where at Trinity you feel God is calling you to serve. On the whole, you responded graciously and generously with oers of your time and talent. Thank you for that. Although we still have “islands” of areas where additional volunteers are needed (Godly Play Sunday School classes for our little ones, Nursery and Children’s Chapel volunteers, adult choir members, etc.), more of you have oered your help than ever before. As you do, we are able to move from the old “20% of members do 80% of the work” model. While on the subject of the oering of time and talent, I want to address briefly a trend present all too often at Trinity as well as in other congregations. Especially in times of important transition such as your search for a new rector, the picky pew sitters begin to complain and criticize about the work of the search committee or vestry. This kind of behavior is detrimental to the life of our congregation. Every person who is an adult member in good standing of this congregation (age 16 and up, baptized, confirmed, regular in giving, attendance and participation) is eligible to serve on the vestry. The opportunity to serve on the search committee by submitting one’s name to the vestry was given to all. Of course, everyone cannot be chosen or elected; but if you don’t oer your name to be considered, you have no reason to criticize. The Search Committee and Vestry of Trinity have done a superior job of keeping the congregation updated. Multiple times they warned us that the time for tighter confidentiality would come – and that time is here. The vestry will issue the final call, according to the canons of the Episcopal Church. They are your duly elected representatives and we can trust in their wisdom, hard work and integrity. End of sermon. Now back to the subject of time and talent. Recently my attention was grabbed by an article from Faith and Leadership, an online publication from Leadership Education at Duke Divinity School. The title is, “A small N.C. church reaches out in big ways.” Here is the link: https:// www.faithandleadership.com/ small-nc-church-reaches-out- big-ways. I hope you will read the entire article – it’s not long. The title was not one of those clever, attention-grabbing ones that often leads me to open and read a posting. The truth is that on September 11, the Strategic Planning Committee (with members of vestry) will reconvene after two years of completing over 12 months of hard, concentrated work in 2013. In anticipation of that meeting, articles pertaining to parish vision, ministry and leadership development have found their way onto the hard drive of my computer for reference. This particular article brought to mind conversations I’ve had with a number of you about your struggles with finding the place and work to which God is calling you. I’ve come to believe that in some cases, we are thinking too big! Strange thing to say; but from the article about this seventy member parish in North Carolina, it is clear that with God-given vision, any congregation can meet important needs in their community. One member, with a grant from the congregation of $2,000/year, bakes 100 birthday cakes annually – one for each child in foster care in the small community. Her faith community supports her ministry to children in the wider community. Instead of renting out several acres of land surrounding the church building, the parish allows community persons in need of income and food to grow, harvest and then sell produce not used for their own families – all free of charge. What might you do as one person or as a couple or small group with resources already available? Look around you with fresh eyes. God has given you the gift of time and ability – ask for the vision. Blessings, Dorothy+

From the Interim Rector… We recently launched the first part of our 2016 pledge campaign by asking you to indicate how and where at Trinity you feel God is calling you to serve. On the whole, you responded graciously and generously with offers of your time and talent. Thank you for that. Although we still have “islands” of areas where additional volunteers are needed (Godly Play Sunday School classes for our little ones, Nursery and Children’s Chapel volunteers, adult choir members, etc.), more of you have offered your help than ever before. A Message From The Senior Warden…If you were not in church on Sunday, August 30, you missed the update on our search process. We are making progress!! The Search Committee has passed the baton to the vestry and we are at the interview stage of the process. This dedicated group of folks spent many hours in weekly meetings over many months on this important responsibility. When you see them, give them a hand shake or hug and say “thank you”. Now the process is in the hands of the vestry, a group of twelve parishioners elected and entrusted by you. The vestry is responsible for making the final decision and issuing the call. Let me assure you we have been preparing. We have met with the Search Committee and listened to each and every one of

them followed by open discussion. We have focused on “listening”. We have prayed together and asked God to lead us to follow His plan for Trinity Parish. We have listened to the advice and counsel of Canon Snare. Through it all, we are encouraged and excited about the days ahead. We are all ready and eager to call a new rector. However, we will not rush the process. It is possible the baton could be passed back to the Search Committee. We ask for your prayers as God’s hand guides us. After all, He is the one in charge. We just have to listen.

Blessings,

Sheila Foust
