Second Sunday After Pentecost Preparation for Worship-Let us join together now and prepare for worship. Dear Family of God – these are trying days in God’s beloved world. As Christ’s Church, sustained by the

Holy Spirit, we have gifts and a call by which to care for one another and our neighbors. Worship in which we encounter our living God and know ourselves connected to the body continues. So this day we expand our worship into our homes, knowing that as we read the same Scriptures, and share in the same prayers, we are held together on this Sunday morning. Let us prepare our hearts and minds to worship the living Lord.

Prelude “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” arr. Cherwin

Call to Worship Whether we stray like sheep or follow faithfully, God welcomes us here. Whether we seek healing and wholeness, or stand ready to extend compassion, God welcomes us here. Whether exhausted from journeys across rough terrain, or renewed and refreshed, our souls at peace, we gather to hear the good news: The kingdom of heaven is at hand!

Hymn #634 “To God Be the Glory” 1 To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he has done!

2 Great things he has taught us; great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. [Refrain]

Prayer of the Day Eternal God, your Son Jesus Christ, now exalted as Lord of all, pours out his gifts on the church. Grant us that unity which your Spirit gives, keep us in the bond of peace, and bring all creation to worship before your throne; for you live and reign, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of Confession Holy God, you send us to proclaim the good news of your kingdom to all who are lost, all who are afflicted, all who are captive, all who have been cast out. But we are content to proclaim the in-breaking of your kingdom within familiar communities where we know others will receive this news with nods of agreement. Push us beyond what is comfortable and safe, and strengthen us for lives of compassionate service, that we might be the laborers you call us to be. (Silence for Reflection)

Declaration of Forgiveness The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Anthem “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” Here I Am Jillian Koenig, Flute Children’s Sermon

Gospel Reading Matthew 9:35-10:8 Lay Reader: Tammy Venti

9 35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

10 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near. 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

Meditation “Heavy Farm Equipment” Dr. Jeff Beebe

Affirmation of Faith (Apostle’s Creed) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the People -- A National Prayer “Heal Our Land” by Songwriter Michael Card Forgive oh Lord and heal our land And give us eyes to seek Your face and hearts to understand That You alone make all things new And the blessings of the land we love are really gifts from You

If My people will humbly pray and seek My face and turn away From all their wicked ways Then I will hear them and move My hand And freely then will I forgive and I will heal their land

Unite our hearts in one accord And make us hungry for Your peace and burdened for the poor And grant us hope that we might see The future for the land we love our life our liberty

If My people will humbly pray and seek My face and turn away From all their wicked ways Then I will hear them and move My hand And freely then will I forgive and I will heal their land Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth

as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Doxology (Hymn #606) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Hymn #719 “Come, Labor On” Ora Labora

1 Come, labor on. 3 Come, labor on. Who dares stand idle on the harvest plain Cast off all gloomy doubt and faithless fear! while all around us waves the golden grain? No arm so weak but may do service here. And to each servant does the Master say, Though feeble agents, may we all fulfill "Go work today." God's righteous will.

2 Come, labor on. 4 Come, labor on. Claim the high calling angels cannot share; No time for rest, till glows the western sky, to young and old the gospel gladness bear. till the long shadows o'er our pathway lie, Redeem the time; its hours too swiftly fly. and a glad sound comes with the setting sun, The night draws nigh. "Well done, well done!"

Benediction

Today is Flag Day, also called National Flag Day, in the United States, a day honouring the national flag, observed on June 14. The holiday commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag.

The idea to set aside a day to honour the national flag came from several sources. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885 urged his students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” He later wrote an essay published in a Chicago newspaper that urged Americans to proclaim this date as the day to celebrate the flag. In 1888 William T. Kerr of Pennsylvania founded the American Flag Day Association of Western Pennsylvania, an organization to which he dedicated his life. A lesser-known claim is that of George Morris of Connecticut, who is said to have organized the first formal celebration of the day in Hartford in 1861.

In 1916 Pres. Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 the U.S. Congress permanently established the date as National Flag Day. Although Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday. Each year the U.S. president delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and all Americans are encouraged to fly U.S. flags during that week.

Affirmation of Faith – Time after Pentecost The life, death, resurrection,

and promised coming of Jesus Christ

has set the pattern for the church’s mission.

His human life involves the church

in the common life of all people.

His service to men and women

commits the church

to work for every form of human well-being.

His suffering makes the church sensitive

to all human suffering

so that it sees the face of Christ

in the faces of persons in every kind of need.

His crucifixion discloses to the church

God’s judgement on the inhumanity

that marks human relations,

and the awful consequences

of the church’s own complicity in injustice.

In the power of the risen Christ

and the hope of his coming,

the church sees the promise

of God’s renewal of human life in society

and of God’s victory over all wrong.

The church follows this pattern

in the form of its life

and in the method of its action.

So to live and serve

is to confess Christ as Lord. --Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.32-33
