Dear Friends,

After 21 years as Headmaster, it would be easy to be nonchalant about our succes-ses and the growth of our young men. One could say that I have seen it all before and that it is hard to get excited about a milestone that a young person achieves or another gift to the school. To the contrary, I think my longevity has given me the perspective to enjoy and celebrate these triumphs recognizing that our accomplis-hments arise from hard work, concern for others, and support from every member of the community.

One of our new teachers responded to my query asking him to compare his experien-ce at Trinity-Pawling to that of his former boarding school. “The work is much harder

as more is asked of me, but I am enjoying myself more.” I pressed for a further explanation. “The enjoyment comes from recognizing that everyone, students and faculty alike, are striving for excellence in everything that they do. I want to make sure that I do not let my students or my colleagues down. I am working hard but feel good about what I am doing.” Such commitment is typical of what I see in the student leaders, faculty, and staff of Trinity-Pawling.

There is no question that the economic climate is a challenge for any boarding school. Tuition is expensive and represents about 78% of our income. The remainder comes primarily from the return on our investments which as we all know have been a challenge for the past decade, and from the generosity of so many throu-gh gifts to the school. We have invested heavily in classroom technology with Smart Boards and computers, thanks to restricted gifts. We are building 10 faculty homes in the former “barracks” area, tearing down the 1944 “temporary” buildings built by the U.S. Army. These stately brick homes with slate roofs continue to strengthen our cohesive campus design, thanks to the gifts of Marlynn and Bill Scully ’57. By making wise decisions about the needs and wants of the school, we finished the 2010-2011 school year again in the black, continuing our financial success since the 1970s.

Moreover, our students continue to shine. By any measurement – the quality of student speeches in Chapel, the college placement list, the length and breadth of the Headmaster’s List (honor roll), and the individual and team successes on the athletics fields – our students are growing like they never have before. I am very proud of all that happens on our campus.

Please come by for a visit and see for yourself why I am so proud. Thanks to all who have so generously supported Trinity-Pawling.

Sincerely,

Archibald A. Smith III

Letter from the Headmaster
