What is special about Trinity Pastors’ College?

• You do much study at home so that you do not have to leave your family or ministry while you study

• All of Scripture is studied, with an emphasis on doctrine, to equip you to expound Scripture faithfully, clearly and powerfully by God’s grace

• We teach historic Christianity as summarized in the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith

• The studies are under the oversight of a local church, Trinity Baptist Church, Nairobi

• Students from the three years study together so that first years can get help and encouragement from those ahead of them

• High standard of theology attempted, based on Westminster Theological Seminary

What is the stated purpose of TPC? “To be the means under God to train pastors for local churches who rule well by labouring in preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17)”. This includes being well grounded in all Biblical doctrines (Titus 1:9), knowing the principles of Biblical exposition, and so be able to refute false teaching and build people up in the true faith.

History: In 1980 Keith Underhill received a plea from the Church of Christ in Africa in Kisumu to help train men for its churches. Trainees were going to overseas institutions but would never return to serve in the church. Because he was only able to be in Kisumu for a few days each month the studies were of necessity largely self-study. The course was started in Nairobi as well, and over the years more than 100 men have participated in the PTC. More than 60 continue to be involved in the ministry of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in various places in Kenya, and even outside. We are now in the process of setting up a Board and renaming it Trinity Pastors’ College (TPC).

Faculty: Those who have taught 2014-2016 include:

• Oliver Allmand-Smith – Pastor of Trinity Grace Church, Ramsbottom (UK)

• Martin Grubb – Former pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Charlesworth (UK)

• Ryan Devine – Pastor of Riverside Baptist Church, Los Angeles (USA)

• Geoffrey Thomas – Retired pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth (UK)

• Stephen Turner – Retired pastor from New Zealand

• Keith Underhill – Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Nairobi (Kenya)

The method of study: You come to Nairobi 6 times each year for 3 years. You spend 8 days (Wednesday to Wednesday), with 6 days of lectures, and the weekend in order to participate in the local church. You do much self-study at home, reading and answering questions, at least 20 hours a week.

1997 2007 2012

Cost:

We only charge you Kshs. 6,000 a year, i.e. 1,000 each time you come. We expect you to fund your own transport. A scholarship may be available upon request. You will be lodged at the Trinity Baptist Church premises and all food is provided. We also make available the necessary books (printed and electronic) as well as photocopied material.

Application: 1. As you think about this course of study we ask you to put the following

questions to yourself – Are you sure God has called you to preach the gospel? Is your local church convinced of this?

2. Are you preaching, and have you seen any fruit? Are you able and willing to give 3 years to serious study? Are you willing to do this without receiving a recognized certificate (we are considering if this may be possible in the future)?

3. If you can answer yes to these questions please write / email the TPC Co-ordinator with an application letter, a letter of recommendation from your local church, and a copy of your KSCE / degree certificate and any other

post-secondary education.

4. We will consider if we would like you to join the TPC, and if so, will send you an application form.

" Imagine meeting someone, you kind of hit it off immediately

and get chatting and laughing, really enjoying each other’s

company without really bothering to get to know each other.

Then someone comes along and asks you “Who’s this man you

are with? Do you know his name, his background, his worth”

Imagine the bewilderment, even embarrassment of having to

mutter and stutter, not knowing what to say in response. This

example closely mirrors my experience at the PTC. Here I was

introduced to the Bible, MY BIBLE, a book I had interacted with

almost all my life. Born in a professing Christian family, begun

preaching while in high school and pastoring at age 23, I knew

that the Bible is the word of God, but did I? How and why is

the Bible God’s word, what are the implications of that, to my

life, my faith and my preaching. How am I to approach it, rightly

divide and apply it? Walking with a “strange” Bible in hand

meant that I had no functional theology, no knowledge of the

Biblical gospel and no Christian life to talk about. As a result

I had imbibed and propagated the false wealth and health/

prosperity gospel, got deeply entrenched in the errors and

excesses of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement etc. In my

3 years at the PTC, I met and learnt under godly, Biblical men,

whose example of faithfulness to and passion for the scriptures

not only steered me to a true understanding of the gospel, but

also instilled in me an attitude of utmost trust in the scriptures.

At the PTC I didn’t just learn theology, I found the Bible, it was

opened to me and in it I found the gospel, the gospel which

saved my soul and which I now preach to the saving of other

souls".

“PTC was to me and will be to every new student an

inoculation (vaccination) against all sorts of false teachings”

Testimonials

- Joseph Mucheru (2010-2012), Pastor Trinity Baptist Church, Miathene

“I wish to register my deep appreciation for the wonderful

teaching given to pastors and other ministers of the gospel at

the TBC PTC. The teachings are well organized carrying the

students from shallow understanding of the word of God to

depth in the truth.

I personally have gained very much. Before I joined the PTC I

thought I knew how to preach, but when I was trained in the

college, I came to realize that I have been preaching a mess to

my shame.

So it was in the college where I learned not only the truth, but

also extracting the truth from the word of God, and putting it

into a sermon or a topic in which I feed the flock. Indeed the

congregation has benefited much from this and therefore we

are growing spiritually.

My prayer is that God may bless the college and all who work

there that they may continue to prepare more workers of the

Gospel as they prepared me and my fellow pastors that the

truth be preached in all the world.”

Joseph Mucheru

- Joshua Sitet (2000-2002), Kasei Trinity Baptist Church, West Pokot

“The course was an eye-opener for me and this has enabled

me to preach Biblical messages as opposed to before when

I used to put my mind into the scriptures, now I let the text

speak for itself. This has blessed the work and enabled me to

study the Word of God more and more!”

Eric Ngala Mutumbi

Barnabas Kuogo Olare (2012-2014), Pastor of Gospel Missions Agency, Mombasa.

- Eric Ngala (2007-2010), Pastor Africa Inland Church, Bumala
