HOW TO SPELL MARRIAGE

On their 50th wedding anniversary, a couplesummed up the reasons for their long andhappy marriage. “I never try to be selfish,”the husband said, “After all, the wordmarriage has on ‘I’ in it.”

“For my part,” the wife said, “I never correctmy husband’s spelling.”

WHAT DO YOU OWE YOUR FATHER?

What do I owe my father? Everything. Hewas my best friend: a parent who knew howto be patient with an unruly child; apreacher of joyful faith who practiced whathe taught; a good companion in the woodsand in the library; a fearless man with akind heart; a Christian without pretense orbigotry; a true American gentleman of thedemocratic type. FATHERS LEARN FAST

When I was a boy of 14, my father was soignorant I could hardly stand to have the oldman around. But when I got to be 21, I wasastonished to see how much he hadlearned in seven years.

Many people asked me if I had done anything special for my birthday. My answer was thesame to each and every one of them; “I saw the new Star Trek movie in IMAX 3D.” As for themovie, I was not disappointed. However, in anticipation of seeing the movie I knew that it waseither going to be great or terrible. There could be no middle ground here. For the producers, actors and director to take on a project like this involved great risk. Star Trek is an icon. It wasone thing to try doing Star Trek The Next Generation as well as the three other spin-offs thatfollowed, but to go back and deal with the original characters is to tread on sacred ground. Fans who grew up with the original series, like myself, would either love or hate this “new” StarTrek. A friend of mine had warned me prior to seeing the movie that, “I liked it, but it was notthe Star Trek I grew up with. ” This is an origins film, which is a film that tells us how theoriginal crew of the Starship Enterprise comes together. However, there is a twist. The twist isthat hostile aliens from the future travel back in time and thus change the present and future ofour favorite characters. This of course opens the door to more movies and maybe even a newTV. Series. This plot twist provides for new possibilities in any future production, possibilitiesthat are not bound by the old story line of the original series. They have the original charactersplayed by younger actors, they have the Starship Enterprise, and they have a blank slate “toboldly go where no story has gone before.”

What are the key ingredients that make this film a success rather than a failure? First, trekkieslove the original crew of the Enterprise. If this film had been made 20 years ago, it would havefailed. After all, who could ever replace the original actors? However, in the real world theactors have aged to the point where they would no longer be gallivanting across the universe. Also, two of the original actors have died. It was obvious that the last film made with theoriginal actors would be the last time they would all be together. The new actors are believableas younger versions of the enterprise crew. Although they don’t all physically resemble theirolder counterparts, they portray their personalities well. And, yes, the guy who plays Mr. Spocklooks exactly like a young Mr. Spock (a different looking Spock would be unacceptable). Theuniforms, although not exact copies of the original are similar. The Starship Enterprise and itsinterior scenes may be ‘jazzed up’ versions of the original, but they look familiar. Finally, thecore values of Starfleet and the mission of the Starship Enterprise are the same. That iscorrect, the core values of Starfleet and the mission of the Starship Enterprise are the same.

I believe that one of the keys to both integrity and success in this world is having core valuesthat are consistent. To me, the most important aspect of being a church is living up to our corevalues. The most important aspect of being a Christian is living up to our core values. Although I could go into an extensive list, I prefer to keep it simple for this particular article andleave you with the core values of our mission from the commissioning words of Jesus to theApostles just prior to his ascension, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to risefrom the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to beproclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of thesethings.” The original mission of the Starship Enterprise was to “boldly go where no man hasgone before.” Our ongoing mission to ‘boldly go with the good news of Jesus Christ to allnations.”

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Andy

Junior Choir NotesSunday, May 17th the Junior Choir completed another terrific season! Thisgroup of children included more “little ones” than in years past but all workedand grew together in their understanding of what it means to be a member ofa group of people who meet to lead others in their worship of God.

We have learned that to belong to the choir means we have made acommitment to be present at rehearsals and Sundays we sing (even when wefeel tired or think it is a long time to sit still.) We know that we are to take careof bathroom needs before the service. We are to think of others beforeourselves (well, most of the time.) We know that we are responsible forlearning the words to our songs (sometimes singing them in the car the entireway to church.) We know there are rules regarding our choir robes and howwe get them and put them back on the rack again. But most of all we knowthat we are loved by God more than we can imagine and want to do our bestfor Him.

MANY thanks to all who worked together this year: parents for bringing us tochurch and going over the words, children for responding, Mr. Kraemer for hiscreative and enthusiastic accompaniment and to Miss Lisa and Miss Milly forsupervising robes. No one person can do everything and this is another areaof the church in which we begin to recognize some of our talents and abilities.

Looking forward to another season, we will be starting a bit later than previousyears: the first rehearsal will be Sunday, September 27th, and we will sing forthe first time on Sunday, October 18th. Hopefully everyone will be back fromvacations, rested and “raring to go.”

“Go! Win with Jesus” is the theme of our 2009 Vacation Bible School. Be sureto mark your calendar for August 3-7 and invite everyone you know to come tothe closing program on Friday evening August 7th when we will participate in“Studio, Go! Game Show.” Wonder who will be the puppet to join Gorf andGneppie in their annual frolic to learn the songs and remember everyone’snames?

See you in church and Sunday School and Vacation Bible School!

Love to all.Mrs. Schmidt

“In the worst of times,God is our best source of strength.”

Do you read your Bible everyday? Our Sundayschool students receive a Bible in Pre-Kindergarten class, and they use that Bible eachyear up to the 3rd grade. The new red Bibles aregiven to the students in the 3rd grade, and theyuse that Bible through 6th grade.

As the students move to Confirmation, in 7th and8th grades they receive the “Living Bible.” ThisBible stays with them throughout their highschool years. All students are encouraged tobring their Bibles to church each Sunday wherethey read the scripture lesson for the day. Howabout you? Try spending 10 to 15 minutes eachday reading your Bible.

The Sunday school department wishes to thankall of you who purchased plants or trees at our“rainy day” plant sale. We appreciate your help,as it made our treasury acquire money to pay forBibles, as well as material for our Vacation BibleSchool.

Speaking of Vacation Bible School, mark yourcalendar to save August 3rd through 7th for ourtime of 9:00 a.m. until noon so you will be withus. The theme will be “Studio Go - Game Show”- “Come Win With Jesus.” Gneppie and Gorf willbe looking for you!

We end the Spring Session on June 7th, and willbegin the Summer Session with new material. You won’t want to miss any of this time together.Remember - we teach every Sunday of the year!

Rally Day will be held on Sunday, September13th. This is a great time to begin a new year oflearning more about Jesus.

Our next staff meeting will be held on Tuesday,September 8th at 7:00 p.m.

Have a safe and restful summer vacation.

A final thought: “Instead of rushing through ourdays thinking only of the destination, why not enjoythe journey with God?”

To God be the glory,Pat Henry
