The Atlantic Philanthropies gave €138.4 million toTrinity and the University of California, San Francisco(UCSF) in 2015 to establish the Global Brain HealthInstitute (GBHI). This groundbreaking initiative aimsto tackle the looming dementia epidemic andimprove health and dementia care worldwide.Dementia is among the most devastating illnessesglobally, affecting over 48 million people, a numberwhich is expected to double every 20 years if thereare no effective interventions. The GBHI will train600 global researchers over 15 years in the US,Ireland and across the world to carry out dementiaresearch, deliver health care and change policies andpractices. In 2008 Mr and Mrs Naughtoninvested in the NaughtonInstitute, a state-of-the-artnanoscience facility CRANN.Trinity today, on a per researcherbasis, is among the top in theworld in Nanotechnology and inMaterial Science. Since the initialinvestment the Naughtons havesupported a number of otherinitiatives including STEMscholarships.

In 2010 The Capt. Cathal RyanTrust represented by DanielleRyan funded the construction ofthe new Lir Academy, a purpose-built facility to train a newgeneration of actors and othersinvolved in stagecraft.

She also contributed to theScience Gallery and TrinityBiomedical Sciences Institute,where a seminar room is namedafter her father, Dr Wilhelm(Fips) Schuler.
