Climate CrusaderI’m sure some of you have read aboutthe little Swedish school girl, GretaThunberg and her concerns regardingclimate change and what the wholeworld should be doing about it. I oftenask myself what am I doing, beside pray-ing? And what are we as a parish doingand more so, what is the church at largedoing? I was pleased to learn earlier thatSt. Steven’s Church in East Haddam usedthe topic of climate change as part oftheir weekly Lenten forum, and I plan toget in touch with their rector to learnhow it went.

Until then here ismore informationabout Greta andher crusade.

—Br. Thomas

Greta Thunberg isa Swedish school-girl who, at age 15,

began protesting about the need for im-mediate action to combat climate changeoutside the Swedish parliament and hassince become an outspoken climateactivist.

She is known for having initiated theschool strike for climate movement thatformed in November 2018 and surgedglobally after the United Nations ClimateChange Conference in December thesame year. Her personal activism began

WHAT do you do to refresh yourself? We all get“down in the dumps” from time to time. Whatbrings you out of the dumps? Take a look at

these Red-tailed Hawk chicks. Are you feeling more likethe ones on the left or the one on the right?

This week at our Thursday service in the Chapel at12:15 we read a short biography of Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinoplearound the year 380. We read of how against his will he was ordained a priest andcompelled by the Emperor to become Bishop of a place Gregory himself described as“a detestable little place without water or grass or any mark of civilization.” He felt, hesaid, like “a bone flung to the dogs.” Not a great way to feel about your vocation inlife! I think we can safely say that Gregory was “in the dumps!

The biography we were reading went on to say that on top of his vocationalproblems, Gregory suffered the loss of family members and friends, and was himselfbrought to the point of death by all the stress. It said he “withdrew for healing.” Then, some years later, he moved to Constantinople “a new man and no longer in despair. He appeared as one afire with the love of God.”

What a change! The biography in Holy Women, Holy Men is silent about whathad transpired between the time he was on the verge of death and this time when hewas all aflame with love. At our service we sat and contemplated what Gregory mighthave done during that time of withdrawal for healing. How did he get from burnedout to burning?

We are approaching summer, when even those of us long out of school canenjoy recess. But not all vacations were created equally restful…as you may have al-ready experienced. I look back on my own childhood and marvel at how my hard-working Dad managed year after year to use his precious vacation time for familycamping trips which entailed lots of driving with a carful of kids, all the packing andunpacking, the skillful setting up of tents, etc. which such trips entailed. You wouldhave expected him to arrive home more exhausted than before he left, yet that justdid not happen. He was truly rejuvenated by the camping melee.

What refreshes you? It is important to know. And rest and rejuvenation is notjust for vacation any more. We all need it on a regular basis. If you are feeling anxiousand a bit frayed about the edges, consider how you might withdraw for healing. Forme it takes a morning of birding or time spent playing music with my New Havenfriends. What does it take for you?

In the gospel of Mark, Jesus said to his disciples, “Come and rest a while.” Formany were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they wentaway in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. (Mark 6:31-32) Luke records thatJesus himself would often withdraw to deserted places and pray. (Luke 5:16) So Iwould remind you that intentionally taking Jesus with you is an important part of yourown withdrawal for healing.

By all means, do get away. Do it regularly, instead of waiting until you are com-pletely wiped out. And make sure you withdraw to a place which allows you to rest inthe presence of God. That may mean visiting another country. It may mean com-muning with nature. It may mean spending time with those who love you. Spendsome time thinking about what refreshes you, what returns you to your true self, whatrestores your relationship with God. Take a page from the life of Gregory ofNazianzus, and withdraw to heal.

IN THE SILENCE OF THE HEART

GOD SPEAKS. If you face God in prayerand silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.

—Mother Teresa

Parish Wins Financial Merit Badges

AT SPRING TRAINING THIS YEAR Louis Fuertes, Canon for Mission Finance& Operations, taught a class entitled “Merit Badges.” He educated us in howthe canons of The Episcopal Church and ECCT deal with parish administra-

tion and finance in a number of ways. The requirements that they set forth promote avariety of institutional virtues including financial sustainability, transparency, equity, and careful stewardship of resources. ECCT parishes collectively fall short of many ofthese requirements. He asked us to imagine an Annual Convention in which atten-dees wore sashes bearing the merit badges for all the financial canonical requirementswith which their parish complies. He went on to describe the following seven“merit badges.”

1, The Parochial Report Merit Badge: Just about all parishes will havethis merit badge, however only 77 parishes would have the coveted goldstar. This signifies Vestry approval and Parochial Report submission be-fore March 1, as specified in the Canons of The Episcopal Church.

2. The Gold Watch Merit Badge: Most parishes will have this badge signi-fying that parishes are complying with ECCT Canon XIII by makingtimely pension payments for clergy.

3. The Ten Percenter Merit Badge: Parishes who contributed 10% oftrailing year operating revenues to Common Mission Support would havethis badge.

4. The Pink Pig Merit Badge: About 118 parishes would have this badgebased on managing their investment draws for operations at less than25% over a three-year period. About 93 of the 118 parishes would wearthe Deputy Arnold merit badge, a blue star on the pink pig, as their an-nual endowment draws were 5% or less.

5. The Green Eyeshade Merit Badge: Members of 105 parishes that sub-mitted audits or financial reviews for the prior year would wear thisbadge. Parishes submitting the above reports by September 1, as re-quired by canon IV.4.D, would have the very rare “Star Accountant” merit badge.

Page 9: Trini ty TRUMPET

MAY- JUNE 2019 / TRINITY TRUMPET 9

6. The Fin Comm Merit Badge: This rarest of all merit badges would beworn by the 69 parishes that comply with ECCT canon IV.2.A in their en-dowment management practices.

7. The Clipboard Merit Badge: This merit badge does not reflect a canon-ical requirement, but reflects a parish’s connection to the broader Episco-pal Church by virtue of its completion and periodic updating of the ECCTParish Survey.

Twenty-three churches registered for this class. Of these, twelve received a sashwith all the merit badges. Church of the Holy Trinity is one of this group that receivedall of the Merit Badges, including the Parochial Report gold star, the Pink Pig bluestar, and that of the very rare Star Accountant!

Our glory comes thanks to the teamwork of our financial leadership (Vestry, Finance Committee, Treasurer, Bookkeeper, Counters, and Clergy) as well as the goodstewardship of our Parishioners! We are in excellent shape as far as Administrationand Financial Management are concerned. Congratulations to everyone!

CLIMATE CRUSADER(continued from p.2)

in August 2018, when her recurring andsolitary Skolstrejk för klimatet ("Schoolstrike for the climate") protesting outsidethe Swedish parliament in Stockholmbegan attracting media coverage, eventhough Sweden has already enacted “themost ambitious climate law in the world”— to be carbon neutral by 2045.

On 15 March 2019, an estimated 1.4million students in 112 countries aroundthe world joined her call in striking andprotesting. Another event is scheduledfor 24 May 2019.

Thunberg has received various prizesand awards for her activism. In March2019, three members of the Norwegianparliament nominated Thunberg for the Nobel Peace Prize.
