25 years maybe a spot in the life of an institution - but for us, early toilers, it is a landmark to cherish. From treading into the forests with no money in our pockets but a bagful of dreams – it has been a long journey. To see what the team has built up over the years and the results, warms our heart. About Us

Vision

Tribal Health Initiative started working in Sittilingi valley of Dharmapuri Dist of Tamil Nadu since 1993. We now have a Base Hospital which caters to more than 1 lakh people, most of whom are tribals. We also run a comprehensive development program for about 12,000 tribals who dwell in 25 settlements. We also work in the Kalrayan Hills in health.

That the people of Sittilingi Valley and Kalrayan Hills in Tamil Ndu lead a better quality of life keeping their traditions, customs and pride intact.

Holding up half the sky

Community Innovations

This year our main progress was in the ‘Women Entrepreneur Society’. From a membership of 166 – there was a rapid expansion to 450 members. From value adding the organic produce in the valley to getting into small scale cattle, goat and poultry farming, the women are all making a respectable living outside agriculture also. This additional income helps them to buffer drought situations, where the rains fail and crops are unviable. They also make vermi-compost and organic pesticides for sale to farmers – which is a force multiplier for organic farming. This year the Farming Initiative had a sales of Rs.74.12 lakhs.

Another new innovation by SOFA [Sittilingi Organic Farmers Assn] was promoting a cattle and goat insurance so that there is risk cover in case something untoward happens. This is a wholly community planned and supported initiative and a model for other farmers groups to follow. SOFA is now a well-known model and the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka send their farmers here for training. We have also had farmers from the North East as well as Russia visit us this year. A Farming Immersion program for all who live in cities was also initiated as a tourism come awareness program.

Another new venture is the coaching center for tribal youth who have finished school and college to help them take Public Service Commission exams. This had been a long term request from them, and as soon as we found the right people, we started this intensive teaching program. About 20 -25 students come regularly forthis training. The team has also taken up watershed management; but only if villages also contribute through ‘shramdan’. We have done some work in 2 villages now.

Our Cattle Scheme

When we started our Cattle Scheme – the Farmers society decided to start their own cattle insurance. The premium was Rs. 500 for Rs 20000/-.With just local verification, your money is in the bank within days of the cow having died. We have completed one year – and the scheme is going like a song... and all 500 members voted to continue it. So many problems can be solved if you let communities take care of themselves.

Tribal Hospital is now ISO 9000-2015 certified. This is to say that our services and processes are as good as any bigger hospital in the city. There is an increasing number of patients coming in, especially for the mother and child care programs. All antenatal care is free for and deliveries and neonatal care are heavily subsidized under their CSR from 2 companies. This has resulted in a 25% increase in deliveries and antenatal care for tribals. With the help of Spine Foundation, Mumbai; we have also started Spine Surgery, a big boon for the tribal patients here. THI is also involved with a Spinal Anesthesia study with Harvard University, USA. SELCO has helped us to make our Operation Theatre, Labor Room and Neonatal Care Unit fully solar powered so that we are grid independent.

We continue our health work at the community level. The School Health Program does health education in 5 schools in the Kalrayan Hills, which have no access to public transport. The Nurse Eye Mitras trained by Essilor now do eye screening in the schools and give free spectacles to those who need it. The weekly clinic at Aruna village in the Kalrayans see about 80 patients on an average day; it also now has full fledged lab so that many of the tribals don’t have to come to the Base Hospital for investigations. The Old Age Health program and field antenatal checksare running smoothly. The 25 Health Auxiliaries continue the Hypertension program – with compliance levels still high. The young doctors here also started Cervical Cancer Screening in the villages for all women above 40 years and further treatment at the hospital is free to those suspicious cases.

Widening horizons

EnablingRamani

Ramani, was one of the early members to join Porgai. She learnt the art from the elder members of Porgai. She now does embroidery at home, and does farm work as well, like many other Porgai members. “The biggest benefit for me due to my work is my income. I even bought a Scooty last year to take my daughter to Thulir school.

Porgai has seen a sales of Rs. 43.78 lakhs this year of which Rs. 19.21 lakhs went to the artisans and tailors of the society. Sales were mainly through exhibitions and the team also went 2 times to Delhi for the EPCH exhibition scouting for the export market. New trainings and new designs, with upcycling of waste cloth into jewelry enhanced the work here.

Going strong

Lighting candlesPerhaps the most heartening event for us was the Rural Sensitization program – 2 camps held in Sittilingi for medical students and young doctors. 63 students from TN and Kerala attended. They saw rural medical practice first hand – its challenges, its appropriate modifications of conventional approaches and most of all , visits to the villages to see, listen and talk to the people of ‘Real India”. Lets hope that will be an ember which will fire some of them.
