Hello! I’m Larry the magical Leprachaun. I LOVE to learn and

explore. Come and take a trip with me and my magical hat. We will explore Mr. Harvey’s classroom. I think he is talking about triangles today. Come

along!!!

Click on my picture to move through the journey!

Good Morning Class! I am going to teach you about triangles today. I hope you enjoy our lesson! Let’s take a look at today’s problem!

Here we are in Mr. Harvey’s

classroom. He is teaching about triangles today!

Here we are in Mr. Harvey’s

classroom. He is teaching about triangles today!

Page 4: Triangle Concepts Presentation

This is today’s problem. I am

not sure how we are going to do

this.

Page 5: Triangle Concepts Presentation

I’m not sure what that

means. I hope he makes this

clear.

Page 6: Triangle Concepts Presentation

These are all right angle triangles. Mr.

Harvey told us these are corresponding.

That means they are equal.

Page 7: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Mr. Harvey labeled each corresponding angle for

us. Each triangle has three angles. A is a 90 degree angle and is the same in each triangle.

Page 8: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Angle B in each triangle is equal to

each other too. Equal angles cause corresponding sides.

Page 9: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Corresponding sides are

proportionate to each other. Mr.

Harvey will explain.

Page 10: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Mr. Harvey labeled all three sides of the

top triangle. If we know that the

bottom line equals 6 and the bottom line of the small triangle equals 3, the small triangle would be

half the size of the other triangle.

What are the other lines of

the small triangle?

Page 11: Triangle Concepts Presentation

You are right! The longer line equals 5. Half of 10 equals 5. Half of 8 equals 4. Remember the top triangle is twice the size of the bottom triangle. You are

starting to get the hang of this!

Page 12: Triangle Concepts Presentation

We can also figure out the

sides of the large triangle as well.

12 is twice as big as 6. So the sides of this triangle are

twice as large.

Page 13: Triangle Concepts Presentation

As usual, Mr. Harvey is going to show us how this relates to the real world. HERE WE GO!

Page 14: Triangle Concepts Presentation

OK class, you will need a meter

stick, pen and pencil.

Remember it needs to be

sunny, and don’t do this around

noon!

Page 15: Triangle Concepts Presentation

I hope you brought all our

materials outside for

this!

Page 16: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Hold your meter stick perpendicular to the ground so it makes a shadow just like the

flag pole.

I wonder how this will work.

Page 17: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Now measure the shadows of

the flag and meter stick.

OK!

Page 18: Triangle Concepts Presentation

These triangles are right angle

triangles. They both have right

angles! They are equal!

Page 19: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Corresponding angles have

corresponding sides.

I remember that from

class.

Page 20: Triangle Concepts Presentation

I measured the meter stick

shadow as 50 cm. That is half

a meter!

Good! Now measure the

shadow of the flag pole.

Page 21: Triangle Concepts Presentation

The other shadow is 2

meters. The flag pole triangle is four times the

size of the meter stick triangle.

So what is the height of the flag pole?

Page 22: Triangle Concepts Presentation

Good Job! The meter stick is 1 meter. The flag pole is 4 times larger. The flag pole is 4 meters

high.

Thanks Mr. Harvey and thanks to all you who came along! I hope you learned something today!
