John Kendall1944 - 2012

I didn’t know John other than someone to admire within the club forhis unique combination of competitive, benevolent and fun lovingnature, so I am not able to make a fitting comment about his life.

But at his funeral a cavalcade of around 30 motorcycles along with ajazz band saw him off in style and Sidge Kenny read a wonderful tribute

to John at the church.Sidge has also written two articles about John which can be found on

the Eastern Centre Home page.www.easternacu.org

FEEL THE BURN

If your approaching 30, 40 or 50you need to read on, any younger

or older then either you don’t worry, you have bags of time or stick tothe diet, eat healthy and stay out ofthe sun. Society and media today is fullof Government health warnings ifyou’re not a diabetic you’re obese ifnot that then it’s high cholesterol,I.B.S., gout or dementia. Add tothat a mortgage, overdraft and im-pending divorce then congratula-tions and welcome to your midlifecrisis! Symptoms recognised, thenread on. Now I’m no doctor or psychia-trist just a simple Blacksmith. Butwhat I do possess are good observa-tional skills and I’m a good listener. And what I’ve seen and heard latelyhas made me realise that I can helpothers. What the hells all this got to dowith bikes John? I hear you ask.Well let me start with a recommen-dation. My mother and father havebeen married for 46 blissful yearsand that’s a Bloody long time to belocked up with – I mean share a lifewith someone. They’ve had theirups and downs same as any rela-tionship but they’re still togetherbitterly argueing with each otherevery day! Mum has her part timejob as well as Pilates and Zumbaand Dad, well Dad’s just Dad. He’sthe sort of fella who can sit througha mind numbing episode of Neigh-bours or Emmerdale then disap-pear into the shed and ‘turn up’ aR. R. 69 alloy high compressionpiston from a blank for the Velo in

the evening! And there you have itin a nutshell, the way forward,‘keep oneself occupied’ and asyou’re all members of the E.F.A. it’sbikes that occupy all of us, whetherriding, competing or maintainingand developing them. But there’smore. If you feel that some of thesymptoms mentioned earlier mayapply to you (cholesterol, obesityetc) then this is a specific areawhere I can help you. Don’t bother with a visit to thechemists or the gym, jogging etcand don’t waste money on Statins, muscle enhancing vitamin pills andall that tosh. What you need is sim-ple (listen up Eaves you’ll like this)a big heavy British Bike – the heavi-er the better! No I haven’t gone madand I’m not on the Hitchcocks pay-roll. What I say is backed up withsound scientific fact gained by ob-serving and listening, read on and Iwill list them.

1. Weight.Well lets face it there’s noth-ing heavier than a 500single iron barrelled pre-unit in a sidecar luggedframe with cast iron hubsand girder forks, as MarkGibb will testify possibly300 – 350lbs or maybe apurpose made trials bikecirca 1949/50 500T as dador Clive Dopson will agree.Where’s the benefit in thatin that? you ask. Well boyswhy waste a tidy sum on

gym membership, walkingabout whilst in ill fittinglycra shorts feeling intimidat-ed by six pack toting ArnoldSwarznagger wannabeeswhen you can have the work-out of your life lugging300lbs of Enfield or Nortonaround the Snaque Pit orThorrington!

2. Sleep.Troubled minds, insomniacs, bankers all would give theirhind teeth for a good nightsnoggin. Well believe me aftera trial riding a bike as de-scribed you will!

3. Feel Better on the Inside. When you’ve experienced thejoy of a 350 AJAY decidingto (in the words of FleetwoodMac) ‘ Go it’s own Way’ whileyou’re desperately trying torecover some dignity andmaintaining a sense of bal-ance in a section watchedover by a group of expectantonlookers who’s shouldersare doing the ‘hokey kokey’and hands cupped aroundtheir mouths in a vain at-tempt to remain silent – onlythen will you realise thatthis spectacle could never beachieved on a Bantam orYamaha. You and your bikemade it happen – be proud!

4. Diet.Someone said to me “eatwhat you like as long as you

exercise.” Well once you’vestretched your muscles be-yond elasticity heaving a bigsingle over big logs anddown again, once you’vepulled the front brake leverso hard whilst trying to re-main upright and in a for-wardly not downwardlydirection, then you’ll ‘Feelthe Burn,’ ‘Hit the Wall’ andmany other suitable phras-es. Think of all the caloriesburnt off and the musclework out – who needs Yoga!

5. Recreation – Chillaxe –Downtime. This basically means thetime taken to clean a bigBritish single after its mud-dy holiday. Quite simplyhours can be spent sittingon a little stall with a radioon next to a bucket of foam-ing water with tooth brushin hand gently teasing littletrinkets of mud and corrup-tion away from slightly rust-ing services. Let your mindwander whilst carrying outthis most pleasurable pas-time, get to know your bikeintimately, each 5∕16 nut, bolt, and washer – there’sso much dirt to enjoy! Youcan’t attack this with a pres-sure washer like those tinplate 2 strokes, this has amag! And mag’s as we knowdon’t like high pressure vol-umes of water aimed atthem, as we all know these

Overall improvements were notedon the 'expertly' laid out tutor sec-tions which were enjoyed by most (I think the gent from Woodbridgefirst time out for 23 yrs was a littlestiff next day but he'll be back!)Next day at Bromley Brook the sec-tion setters produced some interest-ing challenges these were taken inhis stride by the youth ful DanielCarter 3 a real result, well doneyoung man! Gary Eaves 14 ischanging his drink from Jack Dan-iels to Red Bull in a attempt to gethis measure! Colin (Snowy) Sadlerhad some good rides . 50/50 sawRoger Finch back after a 'nigglingvirus' and doing what he does best

are the most temperamentalparts of any big single – whoknows what wizardry goeson in those little boxes. No,toothbrush is best. Thenonce you’ve cleaned on tothe polish and I’ll thinkyou’ll agree nothing shinesup brighter than a big Brit-ish single on a sunny day. Many smaller bikes havetried to emulate this, somehave spent not hours butweeks trying to get thatshine not realising of coursethat British aluminium cast-ings are just that – Alumini-um (predominately) not Zincor Mazac, they simply can’tlive with the shiny brillianceof a polished single on a sun-ny Sunday morning.

So in conclusion, if you want tolaugh in the face of adversity, sidleup to old age and whisper ‘bring iton’ or walk out of the doctors with aspring in your step and a clean billof health. Then forget excessiveground clearance (what’s it for any-way? Why defy gravity? Some haveso much you could limbo underthem!), the use of plastic, ali, titani-um components and that excessive-ly loud tinny 2-stroke noise. Whatyou need is a 4-stroke with plenty ofweight and above all a power pack-age that delivers (eventually.) Pullthat throttle back and wait for thesignal to be read by the engine room

below. I must say the engine man-agement system on my AJAY is sec-ond to none, the expectation andanticipation of power delivery onany big single simply can’t bematched by these modern bikes, you have to learn how to balancefeet up on the foot pegs whilst mo-tionless in sections just until theengine decides on what to do! Thisin turn gives you valuable time todecide on which way to go! It’s awin win situation. Hope this all helps and inspiresyou and a few members out therewith big British singles sitting idlyin the shed, come on drag it out,it’s never too late for exercise!

John Daly.
