Session Descriptions

Safe With You: Power to Protect Dr. Wende Heckert -- Gain vital information about the signs of child abuse and neglect, as well as the process of reporting all suspected cases. Learn what happens when a complaint is filed and how to decrease your risk as a caregiver. Information on the laws will be available for Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Create a plan to not only protect yourself, but the families and children you work with. (Cannot be used for IA Mandatory Reporting credit.)

Successful Strategies to Marketing Your Business Tom Copeland -- Acquire the knowledge and confidence to better promote your business and succeed as a program. Identify how to face many of today's challenges such as competition with other child care programs, marketing strategies, and financial questions.

Techniques for Developing Positive Attitudes Toward Reading With Young Children Bob Kann -- Give kids magical words they'll cherish. Creatively use everything but the kitchen sink to motivate children to read and bring the joy into literacy.

Caring Connections Cara Small -- Children need numerous strong, caring and supportive relationships in their lives. Based on the latest brain research and attachment theory, this approach will help you embed nurturing activities into everyday routines, support active engagement, provide a structure that supports "Calm and Alert"and provide challenges that encourage.

Early Learning Guidelines: Language/Literacy Penny Gildea -- Want to influence a child’s literacy through listening and understanding, speaking and communicating, and phonological awareness? Learn effective techniques to develop literacy, as well as recognize the importance of developing early writing & alphabet skills. (Must attend Thursday night session and both conference sessions to receive credit.)

Full STEAM Ahead Sarah Paulos -- Explore hands-on activities that can be used with young children to expand their interest and knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Agriculture and Math.

Safe With You: Shaken Baby/Safe Sleep Dr. Wende Heckert -- Gain an understanding of the importance of proper infant safe sleep practices in a child care setting . Additionally, identify common risk factors of SIDS and Shaken Baby, as well as effective coping and soothing techniques. Come away with a Safe Sleep policy and a personal plan to cope with a fussy baby. (Cannot be used for IA Mandatory Reporting Credit)

Coming to Terms: How to Effectively Use Contracts and Policies Tom Copeland -- Policies create the framework for a successful childcare program. Tom will define the difference between contracts and policies and how to use both effectively.

Multicultural Storytelling Bob Kann -- Use stories to demonstrate the similarities among cultures and to highlight the uniqueness of different storytelling traditions. Develop competence and confidence when telling and creating stories.

Food Safety Carol Larvick -- Avoiding unsafe foods is important for healthy eating. Recognize simple measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

All sessions approved for licensing requirements for Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska child care providers. CEU credits are not

available.

T-Shirts can be ordered on the registration form and will be picked up the day of the conference. Conference vendors will have additional items for purchase also.

Speakers and topics are subject to change. Participants will receive 6 hours of credit for attending the conference. If attending the Thursday night session, an additional 2 hours will be awarded.
