Common Lawn Diseases: Causes and Cures
5Please say “I found it in Seniors Out-n-About’ Directory.” Thanks! www.tricitiespublishing.com
Common Lawn Diseases: Causes and CuresThe varieties of grasses commonly planted in the Columbia Basin make beautiful lawns. Fertilizing and proper care are needed to keep the lawn green and lush. However, lawns are susceptible to diseases that will make them thin, patchy, and less than beautiful. Cultural practices and environmental conditions can rapidly lead to their spread and damage to lawns. Disease usually appears as small patches that spread over time. Damage to lawns that appear quickly and appear similar to disease can be caused by insects or other pathogens, incorrect watering practices or fertilizer applica-tions, compaction, excessive thatch, or dog urine. It is important to correctly identify the cause of the lawn damage to implement the proper treatment.
Proper fertilization is important to control fungus diseases. Apply 4-6 lbs. of nitrogen fertilizer per 1000 square feet per year. Excess nitrogen can lead to brown patch, Pythium blight, and leaf spot. Ni-trogen defi cient lawns are prone to dollar spot, rust, and red thread diseases. Watering thoroughly until run-off at longer intervals rather than short cycles daily will promote a deeper and more extensive vertical root system that will be more drought resistant. COMMON LAWN DISEASES:Dollar Spot: Small circular spots 1 – 5 inches in diameter than might merge to form larger patches. Fairy Ring: Likes thatch over ½” or organic matter with lignin (tree stumps).Fusarium blight: Greyish patches. Flourishes at high temperatures and under drought stress. Rhizoctonia blight: Irregular brown patches. High temperatures, excess thatch and excessive nitrogen,Summer patch: Usually seen at temperatures above 85 degrees with low-cut lawns.Snow mold: grows rapidly under cool temperatures and wet conditions.Rust: Leaves cover in rust colored spores. Flourishes at 70 – 75 degrees, low nitrogen levels, and excessive moisture.Fungicides can be used but are not always effective if the conditions conducive to the growth of these pathogens continue. B&G Lawn Service LLC, or your lawn care professional can help implement a plan that can help clear up these diseases.

Regular eye exams are crucial in maintaining eye health and catching any warning signs early. This is particularly important for certain forms of glaucoma, as those affected may not feel or see that anything is wrong until the disease has progressed to stages when vision loss occurs. Comprehensive exams should include these three tests:
• Visualacuity:usinganeyecharttotestyoursightatvariousdistances.
• Pupildilation:wideningthepupilwitheyedrops, allowingthedoctor to see signs of disease.
• Tonometry:teststhefluidpressureinsidetheeye.
