My favorite thing about Alabama is the wildlife.

State of Alabama Alabama is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. The states that border Alabama are Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi. The body of water that borders Alabama to the south is the Gulf of Mexico. Alabama was the 22nd state in the USA and became a state on December 14, 1819. Alabama is nicknamed the Yellowhammer State, after the state bird. Alabama is also known as the “Heart of Dixie”. The state tree is the Longleaf Pine and the state flower is the Camellia. The capital of Alabama is Montgomery, the largest city is Birmingham and the oldest city is Mobile. The major rivers in Alabama are the Tombigbee River, Alabama River, Tennessee River and the Chattahoochee River. There are 67 counties in Alabama. The highest point is Mt. Cheaha.

Choctaw Indians The MOWA Choctaw Indians of South Alabama are part of the Choctaw Indians who wouldn’t move from their home land the “Trail of Tears”. The were originally members of the Choctaw Nation that moved to Oklahoma. The MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians was established in 1979. Their first office was located in McIntosh, Alabama and they purchased their first 160 acres if land in south Washington County in 1983. They got the name “MOWA Choctaw Indians” to identify the Indians in Mobile and Washington Counties who came from several Indian tribes: Choctaw, Creek, Cherokee, Mescalero and Apache. Today the MOWA Choctaw Reservation is located on 300 acres in between McIntosh, Mt. Vernon and Citronelle, Alabama. They have a cultural festival every year that includes Choctaw social dancing, stick ball games, Choctaw princess contest and a pow wow between tribes occurs on the third weekend of June each year on their reservation land.

Paul William “Bear” Bryant Paul William Bryant was an American College football player and coach. He was best known as the longtime head coach of the University of Alabama football team. During his 25 years as Alabama’s head coach he got six National Championships and thirteen conference championships. As of his retirement in 1982, he held the record for the most wins as head coach in collegiate football history with 323 wins. Bryant was known for his black and white houndstooth hat and deep voice. Paul Bryant was the 11th out of 12 children born to William Monroe and Ida Kilgore Bryant in Fordyce, Arkansas. His nickname “Bear” came from Bryant agreeing to wrestle a captive bear during a theater promotion when he was 13 years old. Bryant started playing football in the 8th grade. In 1931 he got a scholarship to play for the University of Alabama. Bryant took over the Alabama football team in 1958. He coached at Alabama for 25 years, winning six national titles and thirteen SEC championships. Bryant retired after the 1982 football season at the age of 69. He died of a massive heart attack on January 26, 1983 at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A month after his death Bryant was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian award, by Ronald Reagan.

Opening arguments expected today in gambling corruption retrial The attorneys in a high-profile federal corruption case have selected a jury and are expected to begin opening arguments today in the retrial of VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor and five others.

After three days of questioning potential jurors about themselves and thoughts on issues that the two sides believe could be relevant in the case, the attorneys narrowed down the pool of about 200 potential jurors to 12 jurors and four alternates. The Associated Press reported that attorneys questioned 84 of those potential jurors.

They finished jury selection just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and opening arguments are expected to begin at 9 a.m. today

Professor using snakes in research of human heart BIRMINGHAM -- University of Alabama biologist Stephen Secor fell in love with snakes in college.

He then spent his graduate years chasing coachwhip snakes and venomous sidewinders across the Mojave Desert, learning what and when they ate. And for the past 15 years, Secor has studied the Burmese python -- a docile ambush-feeder that may eat only every other month or even just once a year in the wild.

MOBILE -- As divers searched the muddy bottom of Alabama's Mobile Bay, a salvage ship was dispatched Wednesday to the sunken wreckage of a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter that crashed on a training mission, leaving one crewmember dead and three others missing.Officials said the search would continue through the night throughout the choppy bay in the hope of finding survivors.The MH-65C helicopter crashed Tuesday evening near Point Clear. One crewmember was found unresponsive and later declared dead, the Coast Guard said.The crewmembers were outfitted with survival gear called "dry suits" for the water, which officials said was around 60 degrees Fahrenheit

President Obama on Monday urged the nation's governors to invest more state resources in education, saying a highly skilled workforce is crucial for the U.S. to remain competitive with other countries.Obama made his pitch at a White House meeting with governors in Washington as part of the annual winter meeting of the National Governors Association. The president and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a black-tie dinner with the governors Sunday night.Obama said at Monday's session that he sympathized with governors whose state budgets have been badly squeezed during the economic downturn. But he said that was no reason to trim resources from schools.

US sues Ala. over military, overseas ballots sent late

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the state of Alabama, alleging that the state failed to send absentee ballots to military and overseas voters in a timely manner.The lawsuit accuses the state of not complying with the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act based on delays in sending out absentee ballots for the March 13 primary.A 2009 amendment to the act requires states to send out the ballots no later than 45 days before federal elections.
